A/N: Bonus scene time! This takes a bit after Ren's mental breakdown at the second chapter and gives a bit more bonding between Ren and Yusei. I figure if I have an idea for stuff like this after finishing the chapter, I'll add them in as their own chapters in this spin-off. At least, until I get the spin-off up and running at the right time. These bonus scenes will be short, so it isn't much to read. It's just to put a bit more interaction that slipped my mind while writing initially. Enjoy!
Disclaimer: I do NOT own Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's nor How to Train Your Dragon. Both go to their respective owners. I only claim my OCs. Also, prepare the soap for Ren's potty mouth.
Bonus Scene- Breaking Down Walls:
(Ren's POV)
"Mmm..." I opened my eyes slowly. It took a minute to get my eyes to adjust to the lighting. I already felt the headache coming on. I groaned, pushing myself up and feeling something slide off my shoulders. I looked to see that it was Yusei's jacket and that I was on the couch. I got confused before what happened came flooding back. I groaned, falling back and covering my face with my hands. Gods, I can't believe I got that overwhelmed! You're supposed to be stronger than that, Ren! What would everyone at home think? Of course, my mind immediately went to reminding me of what I've been told over and over by others.
"Go back home, loser! No one wants ya here!"
"A Night Fury chose you of all people. The gods must have a sense of humor."
"Can you focus on something substantial for five minutes instead of wasting your life away with this drivel? What would your father think, seeing you watch this trash?"
I snapped my eyes open when I heard footsteps. I quickly laid back down and rolled over so my face was hidden by the couch, closing my eyes to pretend to be asleep. I kept my ears open to the voices.
"Is Ren doing any better?" I heard Tank ask.
"Not really," Yusei replied. "I messed up after asking about a name he said while he was asleep, and he had a breakdown after you all left."
"He did?" Blitz said. "He didn't..."
"No, he didn't hurt himself, but he might need a bit of time to calm down before he's willing to talk. And I don't want to leave him alone in case it gets worse."
"Ah man, and I went and yelled at him like that," Nervin groaned. "I better apologize once he's feeling better."
"Well, we'll go head out and come back later," Rally offered. "Tell us when he's feeling better, Yusei!"
"I will." I heard footsteps heading out and one pair heading by the couch. I kept up the facade, hoping he didn't notice me clenching my eyes a bit too tightly. I heard Yusei sigh, then felt the jacket being pulled back onto my shoulders before walking away.
I peeked one eye open, shifting a bit to look up. I saw Yusei sitting by his Duel Runner, typing a few things in his laptop. I shuffled back down. They didn't...they didn't criticize my behavior? But why? I would have thought there'd be at least one, "Some dragon rider he is," or even, "He should toughen up, not-" My thoughts were cut off at the sound of an engine revving. I felt my body jump a bit at the noise.
(Yusei's POV)
I cursed a bit, stopping what I was doing. Dammit, I didn't want to wake him yet. I looked back. Ren was still lying down, his back facing toward me. I gave a low sigh. Okay, I'll focus on something else that doesn't have the risk of being too loud. I turned back to my laptop, bringing up the statistics. I didn't get too far until I heard a creek from the couch.
Looking back, I saw Ren sitting up, sliding my jacket off of him in the process. "Did I wake you?" I asked.
"No, I was already awake," he replied quietly.
"I see." I turned my chair around to face him.
There was a lull of silence after. I noticed that Ren was about to talk, but as soon as it sounded like an apology I cut him off. "Don't."
"What?"
"Don't apologize. You don't have to apologize for having a breakdown, Ren. You can't keep bottling it up and expecting it to go away on its own." I got out of my chair and went to sit next to him.
Ren kept his gaze on the ground. "But I...I can't just break that easily. I'm supposed to hold my own, be able to keep myself together and show that I'm really worthy of holding the title of Night Fury rider and of my family line."
I breathed in and out of my nose. "Excuse the language, but who told you that bullshit?"
He jerked his head up to me. "Huh?"
"You're human, Ren, not some mindless robot that's expected to carry out every single task perfectly. You're allowed to express your emotions if anything is upsetting you. You're allowed to talk it out with someone. Whoever put that expectation on you really needs a reality check."
"But...Ellis..."
My eyes softened. "I don't know who your brother was, but I don't think he'd want you to act like this, Ren. He'd want you to be happy and comfortable with yourself, not fit to a standard that's impossible to reach."
He bit his lip, looking away again. I put a hand on his shoulder. "Hey, I really am sorry about mentioning your brother yesterday. I should have known better, especially with how your nightmares sounded like. I got so worried that you had gotten caught that I threw out that caution."
"...why?"
"Huh?"
"Why even care about how I feel or even trust me? You barely even know me."
"Well, you've put a lot of trust in us to keep your secret. Only seems fair we also extend a hand. Besides, friends care for each other, right?"
"Even with how I've been acting?"
"From the sounds of it, you've been hurting a long time without anyone really willing to listen to you. Pretty sure anyone would be standoffish with that kind of treatment."
Ren was quiet for a moment before looking back at me with a small smile. "Well, um, thanks for understanding."
"No prob. And you can talk with any of us about anything. Just don't be so hard on yourself."
"I'll try, but I make no guarantees."
A/N: So yeah, that's it. I can't reveal too much without it being too spoiler-y (unless you read that Surprising Each Other oneshot, then you know the twist), but I will say that a lot of what Ren experienced is because his mother isn't from the dragon rider clans. Of course, Ren wasn't the only one of his siblings to experience it. Ellis brushed it off and AJ just went 'screw it, why should I care what you a-holes think?' (Though like Ren she did bottle a lot of it up when she was younger and just ignored them when they tried to bring it up again). While I am tempted to do a prequel series to go more into detail about things, I don't think it's fully necessary as it wouldn't feature so much from the Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's side of the crossover. I don't know, we shall see. Maybe I'll highlight more in a possible Q&A on dA. Anyway, see you next time!
