Even though it was freezing, Elsa walked deeper into the crypt in nothing but her nightclothes. At this time of the night, it was dark and dreary, but she ambled further in a haze, only coming to a stop when she reached the end wall of the crypt.

A white, wispy fog floated in front of her before taking the form of a man – pale, gaunt and nearly transparent in the way apparitions are. The ghost of a man standing in front of her was beautiful. There was no other way to describe him. Alluring in a way no human she had ever seen. With indigo-coloured eyes and his shoulder-length silver hair was fluttering in the wind, the shadow stared at her with a soft smile on his face.

"My sweet girl." The man whispered in what seemed like a melancholy tone.

"Wh – what...?" Elsa stared wide-eyed, but before she could question further, another apparition appeared in front of her.

This one was a female – beautiful with black eyes and hair, just as transparent as her companion. There was something familiar about them, something Elsa couldn't put her fingers on, but despite herself, she stumbled back a step.

"You're the most beautiful girl in the seven kingdoms, my love." The woman spoke lovingly.

At this, Elsa blinked. What exactly was happening? Who were these people?

She didn't realise she had mumbled aloud until the man spoke, "Rhaegar Targaryen and Elia Martell."

She knew those names. Possibly, everyone in the seven kingdoms did! She couldn't help herself and quired, "Why – why are you here?"

At this, the man smiled sadly, reached out until his palm was almost touching Elsa's cheek and said, "Words are not enough to covey how ashamed I am for not being able to protect you and your brother."

Elsa opened her mouth, but words failed her. Why – why would these two protect her? All she could manage was, "…brother?"

"Twin." If that wasn't enough, the woman added, "Aegon Targaryen."

Elsa wanted to laugh. She wanted these – ghosts to leave! But most of all, she wanted answers… because this – this cannot be true! Her father in all but blood, Ned Stark had told her time and again, that her mother begged him to save her life before dying and he couldn't leave a child behind. And wasn't it known that both the Targaryen babes were murdered in their chambers along with their mother?

As if sensing her inner turmoil, the woman whispered, "Someone saved you."

"That – that can't be." Elsa all but begged because she was no one. "I'm Elsa. Just Elsa."

"No, my princess. You're our child. Rhaenys Targaryen."

She shook her head, so the man added, "Centuries ago, Targaryens were known as mystical people with magic in their blood." She opened her mouth to deny the claims, but the man spoke first. "Haven't you wondered about your numerous skills? How did you find yourself in the ruins of Summerhall? Or how you're the only one who was able to hatch dragon eggs when no one else could?"

Elsa took a breath shakily, staring at the two – ghosts. Now that she looked closely, there was no denying the similarities between her and – these two. She had the same built as her mother's and even the hair was similar – black and curly, but her eyes were inherited from Rhaegar – her father.

"You're my… mother and father…" she croaked out.

Both – her parents – smiled.

Still confused, Elsa shook her head and said, "I still don't understand. Why are you here? Why after all this time? And how can I see you?"

Another thought occurred to her and she gasped, "Am I – dead?"

"I assure you, you're very much alive, my love." Elia told her softly before adding seriously, "Hard times are ahead and you'll need all the support you can."

She looked between her parents confused, when her father spoke, "We cannot do much, but we have something which will help in the coming winter."

He pulled a sword out of nowhere and held it towards her as he said, "Dark Sister – the ancestral sword of House Targaryen."

Elsa took it hesitantly and observed before stating with wonder, "It's Valyrian steel."

Rhaegar gave a single nod when Elia spoke, "When the time is right, go to House Martell in Drone. My brother, Oberyn will do all he can to support you."

Elsa nodded, still feeling out of sorts when he muttered, "We must leave now."

"Wait!" Panicked, she nearly shouted and asked shakily, "Will – will I see you again?"

Her mother smiled at her and whispered, "We're never away, my love."

Her father looked into her eyes and said, "Never forget that we love you, my little dragon."

"Wait! You said someone protected me? Was it Ned Stark?" She asked desperately but was too late as both Rhaegar Targaryen and Elia Martell had vanished as if they'd never been there in the first place, leaving her alone in the crypt.

Elsa woke in her chamber, flushed with sweat and looked around hastily, trying to figure out whether she had been dreaming or not. There was nothing out of ordinary to indicate that she was the dead princess – Rhaenys Targaryen and sighed with relief when she found out that everything was the same as it had been before. She was in Winterfell. Her dragons were sleeping on her bed and Jon was still gone.

Standing up from the bed, she walked towards the table to fetch a glass of water, when her eyes fell on something and she gasped aloud. There in the corner, by the fireplace was a sword. The one gifted to her by none other than Rhaegar Targaryen – Dark Sister.

Unable to sleep any longer, she decided to go out and get some fresh air. It was cold, but she couldn't stay still, not after the dream she had. The dragons were sleeping peacefully and she had finally learned how to ward any room. Not only did it cease the voices from escaping her chambers, but it also would not let anyone inside without her permission.

Ser Barristan eyed the young woman as she walked, looking at the night sky. It hadn't been difficult to judge why king Robert was obsessed with the girl. He had known who she was as soon as he'd laid eyes on her. With eyes as same as her father's, there was no doubt about who she was! More so because he had seen her and her brother after they were born. Someone else might not recognise her, but he had seen the twins more than a handful of times. Aegon was all Rhaegar with violet eyes, silver hair and pale skin, but Rhaenys had taken more after her mother. Despite having Targaryen eyes, she had dark hair and her mother's nose.

He looked around, noticing that no one was around and walked over to her before murmuring, "Princess Rhaenys."

He didn't miss how she stiffened or her fists clenched into fists, which was enough for him to know that he hadn't been wrong. She was the daughter of Rhaegar and Elia and somehow, she was alive. At the moment, he didn't care how… or who had saved her, but the fact that one of Rhaegar's children had survived.

"I – I'm glad to see you alive." His voice broke, filled with emotions.

"I'm not…"

She started, but he shook his head, stopping her and whispered, "I was there when you and your brother were born."

Elsa's mouth snapped shut at that and she glared at the man, but he said, "I want to ask for your forgiveness. I was sworn to protect your family. I failed you. All of you. My greatest regret in life is not being able to do anything to save you or your family, princess."

She was unsure how she felt about someone calling her 'Princess'. In all fairness, she was just Elsa. She studied him just as much as he studied her, unsure about the motives of this man and despite her heart pounding in her chest, she asked, "Who are you?"

"I am Barristan Selmy, kings guard to your grandfather." He added, "You don't know me, Princess, but rest assured, I will never do anything to endanger you."

Elsa stared into her eyes, observing how serious he was and the hidden meaning behind her words – 'I won't be revealing your identity.' There was nothing to be done, so she merely nodded.

They were quiet for some time when she asked, "Did you know them?" Calling them mother and father seemed strange, and she continued, "Rhaegar and Elia…?"

"I did. Princess Elia was a good woman. Kind and clever with a sweet wit." His voice was filled with warmth as he told her ardently. "And I fought beside your father, princess. Finest man I ever met. People loved him."

"I wish I'd known them." She whispered.

For once, Ser Barristan had nothing to say.

Next Morning

She watched Ned Stark smiling at something Robb said before clapping him on the back. He would be leaving with the king for King's landing tomorrow and she wouldn't have the time to speak to him for a long time. Now was the time, so Elsa braced herself, walked over to him and said, "Father? Can I speak to you in private?"

Ned turned to look at her with a frown, but he nodded. "We can talk in my solar."

Elsa dipped her head in a nod and took his offered arm. The two walked along the halls of Winterfell quietly, until Ned broke the silence and asked, "How are the dragon's doing?"

"They don't like being locked in." She stated with a grimace.

He nodded and told her, "It won't be long now. We'll be leaving come morning."

They reached his solar, closed the door behind them and sat down on the desk, waiting patiently for her to speak.

After a few moments of silence, Elsa took a deep breath and finally spoke, "Where did you find me?"

His eyes narrowed at the question, but he repeated what he had always said, "I found you abandoned and I couldn't leave you alone."

She kept her eyes on him and asked quietly, "In Red Keep?"

Grey eyes widened and Ned nearly gaped, staring at her for quite a time. Finally, he slumped back into his chair, rubbing his eyes tiredly and asked, "Did someone say anything to you?"

She swallowed before shaking her head, knowing how foolish it would seem to tell anyone about the dream.

He gave her a look that said he didn't believe her, but thankfully, let it go for now and said, "I wasn't the one to save you. I merely found you outside King's Landing."

"Is it true then?" Elsa couldn't help but ask.

Ned wasn't sure how much she knew or what to tell her, but he knew he would have to tell her and Jon the truth one day, so he decided to tell her what she wanted to know and stated, "You, Rhaenys Targaryen are the daughter of Prince Rhaegar Targaryen and Princess Elia Martell."

Elsa's expressions fell and she asked desperately, "Why would you save me?"

Alarmed and confused, he stared at her. "What…? You were just a babe…"

But before he could finish, she blurted out, "If I'm the daughter of Rhaegar Targaryen, why would you raise me as your own? My father kidnapped and raped your sister! Why would you save me?"

Ned lowered his eyes, feeling the weight of her question and sighed. He looked into her indigo eyes and said seriously, What I'm about to tell you, cannot leave this room… at least, not yet. It would put many people in danger."

Elsa narrowed her eyes but nodded.

"Rhaegar didn't kidnap Lyanna. They eloped and she died in childbirth." He said, carefully keeping their child out of this conversation, not knowing what her reaction would be after figuring out Jon's truth.

Elsa's mouth fell open, suddenly feeling like the world around her was falling apart. But she wasn't done, so she braced herself and stated, "Gregor Cleagane murdered my brother before raping my mother and killing her."

Everyone in the seven kingdoms knew what had happened after the Mad King was killed and the fate of the last Targaryen's, so Ned could do nothing but nod grimly.

She steeled herself and asked, "Did Robert Baratheon order their death's?"

Ned opened his mouth to tell her that she needed to stay away from The Baratheon's, especially Robert and the Lannister's because they wouldn't hesitate before killing a Targaryen, but he couldn't. There was something in her eyes – something cold that even made him shiver. He knew that she was old enough to fight her wars now and there was nothing he could do to stop her.

"Cleagane works under the orders of Tywin Lannister." He informed her before adding hastily, "Elsa – Rhaenys – You're safe in Winterfell. If anyone found out about your true identity, they wouldn't think before killing you and the dragons."

She lifted her chin and stated, "They won't be able to touch me or my dragons."

Ned could again, do nothing as he was filled with dread at the cold gleam that shone in her eyes.

Sansa's Chamber

Elsa closed the door behind her and asked with a smile, "Prepared to leave?"

Sansa eyed the other girl with barely hidden contempt and asked, "Why are you here?"

Elsa's smile fell and she grimaced. She knew the girl didn't like her, more so after the king had asked for her hand instead of Sansa's. She knew Sansa wouldn't betray her 'beloved Joffrey' as all she wanted was to become a queen, but she knew their father had been correct. If anyone found out about the dragons, they were still young and would be slaughtered. With Sansa alone in Kings Landing, who knew what she would tell them if asked.

"We haven't been the best of friends, but I'm here to ask for a favour." She started.

"What?" Sansa asked warily.

Elsa took a deep breath and said, "I was hoping you'd keep the existence of my dragons a secret."

Sansa's eyes narrowed and she asked, "Why?"

"They're too young… still unable to look after themselves. If anyone found out… they would be killed." Elsa pleaded desperately. "Please."

Sansa didn't say anything but nodded. Knowing that was all she was going to get from the younger girl, Elsa nodded her thanks and left the chamber with a sinking feeling in her chest.

Next Day

"You're not joining your father and sisters for King's Landing?" A voice, she recognised as Edric Baratheon's, called.

She turned to see him walking over to her with a charming grin. Elsa couldn't help but return it even as she said, "Not today, My Lord."

"I told you it's Edric." He told her pointedly before smiling.

"Edric." She repeated softly.

Well, I'll have to leave now, but we'll be seeing each other again. I certainly pray to the old gods and the new." He flirted, once again leaving her speechless and she turned red.

"Till then, my Lady." He said with a grin before kissing the back of her hand and taking his leave.

Elsa blinked and shook herself out of whatever daze she had been in and turned to look at Ned, her father in all but blood. For once, he was standing alone, checking everything and she walked over to him. She couldn't stop the sense of foreboding that had filled her since the morning. She just knew something bad was about to happen. She had to stop him from leaving.

"Father." She spoke.

He turned towards her and smiled, "Elsa."

She hesitated before stating, "I don't think you should go with the king."

Ned frowned, thinking that she might be afraid for the dragons now that he was leaving. So, he consoled, "Robb and Theon are here along with all our men. You will be safe."

"No." She shook her head and nearly begged, "You shouldn't go to King's Landing. The Starks don't fare well in the south. Rickard, Brandon and Lyanna. They all went south and died."

Startled, Ned blinked, but finally said, "I have Jory and my guards. I will be Hand of the King. I will be safe."

"From what I know, even the King wasn't safe in that place!" She added softly, "My family – we weren't."

"I've already said yes to Robert." He told her with a sigh, knowing that he would not go back on his word. Also, understanding her apprehension. She had found out that Robert had killed her father and didn't trust him, but Robert had been his friend for years now and Ned was sure the king wouldn't let any harm come to him or his daughters.

She stared at him desperately, looking on the verge of tears, so Ned kissed the top of her head and said, "We'll see each other again," He leaned closer to her and whispered in her ear, "Rhaenys, Princess of House Targaryen."

Next Day

Her dragons had been overjoyed to be let out after such a long time, screeching as loudly as they could as soon as she'd let them out of her chamber, scaring nearly everyone in the castle. They were young and too small, easily settling themselves on top of her palm or onto her shoulders, but how easily they were able to scare people astonished her every time. They had begun attempting to fly but had been unsuccessful as of yet. She wondered how long would it take for them to start.

Dinner that evening had been a low-key affair. She had excused herself as soon as she was done, especially with Lady Catelyn staring at the dragons as if they would attack any moment.

Deep in thoughts, she rested her head against the wire wood tree, grateful for the peace the place brought. She rubbed Silverwing's back with her fingers as her warm body leant against her side, while Balerion hadn't left her side since, shrieking up at anyone who tried to move towards her. Rhaegal and Aeghar were toddling around, enjoying their newfound freedom.

With father and Jon away, Elsa was left with no one to talk to. She didn't know what to do or who to ask about her family anymore. No matter how much she tried, the words kept ringing in her ear – 'Rhaegar didn't kidnap Lyanna. They eloped and she died in childbirth.'

It was clear that her mother and brother had been murdered because her father chose another woman over his wife and children, leaving them defenceless and vulnerable. She didn't know who saved her, but she would've been murdered as well if the man or woman hadn't.

She wasn't naïve and understood why Ned Stark chose to hide her identity, but now – now she was concerned about her dragons more than ever. If people, especially Robert Baratheon and the Lannister's found out about a Targaryen having dragons, they all would be slaughtered without thought, including the Starks for treason.

Elsa raised her palm and focused until a ball of fire erupted, which she banished with a blink of her eyes. She'd never thought the day would come where she would be grateful for being different, but somehow, it had turned into a blessing in disguise. She had been practising how to use magic to her advantage and had learnt to shield the dragons if necessary until they were able to protect themselves.

She remembered her father talking to uncle Benjen about Maester Aemon – a sworn brother of Nights Watch and the last known Targaryen in Westeros. If she wished to know more about her family, maybe she should visit the man himself.

Later That Night

Elsa was walking back to her chamber when she heard a loud cry followed by a howl. Her eyes widened, knowing it was either Summer or Grey Wind. She rushed towards Bran's room and found Lady Catelyn struggling with a man in a suit with her hands around the man's dagger. The man looked at her and then down at her feet, where her dragons were now screeching again, and his eyes widened. Lady Catelyn took advantage of the man's attention diverted and bit his hand. The dagger fell to the floor and the man slapped her, making her fall, but before he could retrieve his dagger, Elsa lunged for it and stabbed the man in his chest. At the same time, Summer attacked him and ripped the man's throat out.

Lady Catelyn took a shaky breath as she looked at Elsa, eyes full of tears.

A few Weeks Later

Bran had woken up weeks ago. Lady Catelyn had yet to return from Vale, but Elsa had been feeling more restless than she had ever been.

"Robb?" she called.

He had been working with Maester Luwin but smiled as soon as he saw her. "Elsa."

"I am leaving for the wall tomorrow." She informed.

Robb's smile fell and he frowned. "Why? Anything wrong?"

"No." she shook her head and said, "I need to speak with Maester Aemon regarding something important."

He looked at her properly for the first time since father had left. She looked stressed and had been quiet ever since – spending most of her time alongside her dragons in her chamber or Godswood. He had assumed it might be because of Jon, but now? Confused, he asked, "Maester Aemon? Maester of Castle Black?"

Deciding to inform him of the truth or part of it, she said, "Before leaving, father told me about my family. I believe Maester Aemon knew of them."

Robb stared at her for some time before finally asking, "What about the dragons?"

"I can't leave them behind. They won't be able to survive without me." Elsa didn't say as much, but she had a theory regarding the dragons. Her magic had brought them to her and possibly, it was her magic that connected them to her.

"It isn't safe for you to travel alone, especially with the dragons." She opened her mouth to protest, but he spoke first and ordered, "Take some men with you."

Knowing there was no way around it, she nodded. "Very well."
