Winterfell
"Elsa!" Rickon shouted as he threw himself at her.
"Whoa! You're getting heavy." Elsa exclaimed even as he picked the youngest Stark, placing a kiss on top of his head.
Rickon nodded and was about to say something when Hodor walked in, carrying Bran, followed by Master Luwin.
"You are home," Bran said and Elsa let Rickon down before embracing him as well.
There was a roar, scaring not only the servants but Hodor and Master Luwin as well, who threw himself in front of Bran and Rickon.
All the dragons swooped down, landing near her making everyone around them freeze with fear. All the adults, at least. Everyone around shifted away, murmuring among themselves as they pointed towards her children.
"Hodor!" Hodor exclaimed.
"By the Gods…" Master Luwin breathed, staring wide-eyed as he shielded Rickon with his body.
"Wow!" Rickon's voice was awed as he stared at Balerion, Rhaegal, Silverwing and Aeghar.
"They've grown," Bran said, staring at the dragons intently.
Summer and Shaggydog walked in slowly, sniffing the dragons just as her children sniffed back and she almost smiled. Elsa looked around as she took in the nearly empty castle with a frown and asked, "Where did everyone go?"
Robb along with everyone else went to the war." Rickon stated matter-of-factly, still eying the dragons.
Horrified, her eyes snapped towards Master Luwin and gasped, "What?!"
"Sansa wrote a letter, summoning him to King's Landing to swear fealty to the new King."
"We shall talk inside. You can warm up after the long journey. The… dragons can stay in your quarter" Master Luwin's tone left nothing for argument as he turned around to leave.
Elsa's lips pinched at the order, but she chose not to argue. The dragons were tired and would be asleep as soon as they were fed. She nodded and her dragons followed, screeching excitedly for food.
Crypt
Elsa never bothered to look at the crypt of Lyanna Stark properly. Not until she realised that this was the woman her father betrayed her mother for. Both Rhaegar and Lyanna were the reason her mother and her twin were dead. Everyone in the seven kingdoms knew that Lyanna Stark as the 'woman raped by Rhaegar Targaryen', but the real victims were her mother and brother. Red hot anger burned throughout her body as she thought about what could've been if only Rhaegar and Lyanna hadn't been selfish… But there was no use lamenting over the things that couldn't be changed. The members of her family were long gone now.
She was here, hoping to see her mother or father once again, suddenly realising how foolish it was. The chilly air around her grew, teasing the fur of her cloak making her shiver. Elsa shook her head as she turned around to leave and screamed when she nearly collided with a 'woman'.
The shadow of the woman before her was just as pale and ghostly as her parents had been. She was wearing a white gown which was strained red, likely the same thing she wore when she died. Dark hair flowed around her as she stared at her with wide fathomless grey eyes, so much like Jon's and with a sudden jolt Elsa realised who this was, for it could be no one else.
Dumbfounded, she breathed, "Lyanna Stark."
There was no response as the ghostly woman continued staring at her.
"Why are you here?" Elsa asked because there was no reason for a strange spirit to be here. Her parents, she understood, but why was she able to see Lyanna Stark of all people?
"I never left." Even though it was eerie, the voice thrummed through the crypt making Elsa flinch involuntarily.
Elsa swallowed. Winterfell was Lyanna's home, so it made sense that she chose to stay here, but the question remained – why was she seeing a ghost? She stumbled across her words as she asked, "How… why…?"
"Aegon." The shadow of the woman breathed.
"Aegon?" Elsa asked questioningly, but the woman didn't speak, instead turned her head to look at something near her crypt.
Elsa followed her gaze and frowned when she saw something silver shining on the ground. She turned her head back to ask what it was, but the girl was gone and once again, she was alone. Taking a deep breath, she walked closer to the object and kneeled before picking it up.
It was a symbol, unlike anything she'd seen before – a vertical line and circle enclosed by a triangle.
A vision flashed in front of her eyes – a flash of green flying towards her; a hooded figure covered with a black cloak; a single word – Padfoot; falling into the burning fire and screaming.
She gasped for breath and some unknown reason, her heartbeat increased. Elsa wanted to scream. She wanted to throw the locket away and never see it again, but most of all, she wanted to beg whoever was listening to just let her be. However, things have never been easy and she knew that worse was yet to come.
Robb's Camp
Elsa stared at the war camp with an impending sense of doom. She had left after a day's rest, intent on being beside her brother in all but blood as he led a war. Master Luwin had informed her that Robb had been named King in the North. Even though she did not doubt that there was no one worth more than him, the fact remained that he was still too young and vulnerable without any member of the family by his side.
Rickon had been inconsolable when she'd told him she was leaving, but soon, it turned into anger. She knew she was a poor substitute for Robb's siblings, but she hoped her presence would provide him with some sort of support until he got the members of his family back.
'Jon should've been here.' Elsa thought bitterly.
She understood his reasoning behind becoming a man of nights-watch, but no matter how she loved him, Elsa didn't think she would be able to forgive him for abandoning his brother… his family. She rubbed her forehead, trying to will the feeling of déjà vu away. It felt as if she had been in a similar situation before, which was utterly preposterous. She had never been out of Winterfell. Not until she left for Castle Black!
Shaking her head, she told the men to rest before moving towards Robb's tent and dismounted her horse. She walked in to see Robb discussing strategies with several men which included – Lord Umber, Garyburn, Maege Mormont, Lord Karkstark and a few men she didn't know. Lady Catelyn and Theon were standing on either side of him and all their heads snapped towards her as soon as she entered.
"Elsa!" Robb exclaimed, clearly surprised to see her.
She noticed that he was wearing the armour similar to their father's – thick with leather for protection and the customary fur cloak draped across his back. It seemed as if he was going to the war and she swallowed hard before inclining her head and muttered, "Robb."
Aware of the people surrounding him, he spoke formally, "I didn't think you'd be back so soon."
"I came as soon as I heard," Elsa replied.
"We're going to a war." Theon jeered with a smirk, "You should've stayed at the Wall… where it is safer for women like you."
She turned towards him and said sarcastically, "…and what would you know about going to a war?"
Theon turned red, ready to retort when Lady Catelyn interrupted before the two could indulge in yet another fight. He's not wrong. You would be safe at Winterfell."
Elsa raised her chin, looked into the Tully blue eyes and stated resolutely, "Lady Catelyn, Ned Stark is my father in all but blood and I'm not going to sit idle as he rots in a dungeon in red keep. I'm going to do all I can to help my brother to get out father back."
The woman glared at her, when another voice boomed through the tent, "Lady Catelyn isn't wrong. This is no place for a little girl!"
Rickard Karstark stared her down and from their expressions, Elsa could tell others agreed. She ignored them all, turned towards Robb and asked, "Robb, can I speak to you alone?"
Robb stared at her beseechingly before nodding and said, "Pardon me, my Lords. Mother."
No one seemed happy, least of all Lady Catelyn and Theon, but still moved to leave the tent, when Elsa spoke again, "May we go outside?"
"Robb…" his mother said warningly, but Robb shook his head. Elsa had lived with them all their lives, so he couldn't understand the reason behind his mother's worry.
"Your grace, should I…?" Torrhen began quietly, unsure whether he should accompany the king or not.
Robb shook his head, waving him off as he walked out with Elsa and Grey Wind by his side. He nodded at his men as they bowed, smiling at everyone despite him being tense.
Elsa breathed before starting slowly, "Master Luwin informed me about Sansa's letter."
Robb felt the familiar rage swell in the pit of his stomach and his cheeks flushed as he spat, "They're the Queen's words. She forced Sansa to write it. They're claiming father to be the traitor to the kingdom because he found the truth of Joffrey's lineage and confided to Stannis Baratheon. He and his siblings aren't Baratheon's, but the result of incest between the Queen and his brother. He wrongly sits on the Iron throne, claiming to be King of Westeros."
"Stannis wants you to support his claim to the throne." She stated.
"Aye."
"What of Arya?" Elsa asked and Robb shook his head grimly.
He looked forlorn and overtaxed, but Elsa knew she had to tell him the truth as early as possible. His focus was on getting his family back, but he needed to know the risks of harbouring a Targaryen, even unknowingly. She didn't want to put an added burden on him, in case the truth came out. Moreover, she was just glad it was Robb and not Theon. He was her brother and she trusted Robb with her life and knew he would keep her secret just as Jon would. She braced herself and said, "Robb, there's something you need to know."
Robb frowned but nodded for her to continue.
"There was a reason I went to Castle Black." She started.
"To speak with Maester Aemon." He confirmed, still unable to understand where she was going.
"Yes," Elsa took a deep breath and blurted, "…because he is my great-great-great uncle."
Robb's mouth fell open and gaped at her uncomprehendingly, making her shift uncomfortably under his gaze. Finally, he choked out, "What?!"
Looking straight into his blue eyes, she uttered, "I'm Rhaenys Targaryen, daughter of Rhaegar Targaryen and Elia Martell."
If possible, his eyes widened as he continued to gawk at her, unable to form words, so she said, "Father told me before leaving. Robert Baratheon and Tywin Lannister wouldn't have let a Targaryen live, so he kept it a secret to keep me safe."
"But both the twins were butchered in their sleep…" That was all he could manage.
"No." Elsa shook her head. "Father doesn't know who, but someone saved me. He said he found me outside Kings Landing."
Robb's fingers tightened in Grey Wind's fur as he kept staring at her. At last, he said, "Well… that explains why you were able to hatch the dragon eggs."
Her being here was enough to put everyone's life in jeopardy and she half expected him to ask her to leave but smiled half-heartedly at his attempted jest. Something must've shown on her face because he pulled her into an embrace and muttered into her hair, "I don't care. You hear me? I don't care!"
Elsa sagged against him with barely hidden relief and whispered in a small voice, "I thought…"
He pulled back, looked into her eyes and stated reverently, "I don't care what your name is… You will always be my sister just like Sansa or Arya."
She'd anticipated him to understand her situation, but she hadn't expected his acceptance. She released a breath she didn't know she'd been holding… until he spoke again, "You're Rhaenys Targaryen – the rightful heir to the Seven Kingdoms. Queen of Westeros."
Elsa made a strange noise but he ignored it and said, "You can take the throne back."
She shook her head and said seriously, "No. No, I don't want it. It's the place where my family was killed. I never want to see it, if possible."
Robb opened his mouth to reply, when suddenly Grey Wind stiffened and looked towards the sky, tilted his nose in the air and let out a growl. By now, they were quite a bit farther from the camp and Robb tensed, reacting to his direwolf and reached for his sword. Elsa though, smiled for the first time in days already sensing her dragons. Robb froze as Balerion and Aeghar swooped down, landing in front of her, while Rhaegal and Silverwing followed.
"They've grown." His eyes were filled with awe as he breathed, "…and they're flying."
Elsa nodded with pride at his words. Robb seemed nervous as Grey Wind regarded her children with his teeth bared, but she wasn't worried. Their behaviour reminded her of Ghost and she could only sense curiosity through their bond.
The two dragons stayed beside their brother, following his lead. Slowly, the direwolf padded over to Balerion and sniffed, who sniffed right back. Her dragon let out a shriek, startling the grey wolf, who pulled back his lips, exposing pink gums and yellowed teeth as he rumbled low in his throat. Grey Wind turned his head to look at Robb, before turning around with a huff and padding back to his side.
Aeghar disregarded everyone as he trotted over to her and stretched his long neck out toward her, butting her gently with his snout. Elsa snorted despite herself at the unspoken demand of her child and scratched his head, making him purr.
Stunned, Robb asked, "What just happened?"
Elsa smiled and told him reassuringly, "They won't hurt each other. They are pack."
Robb turned serious as he asked, "I assume you want to keep the truth of your lineage to yourself for now?"
She gave a single nod and added slowly, "I would appreciate it if you didn't tell your mother or Theon for now."
He stared at her long and hard and for a moment, Elsa feared he would refuse, but much to her surprise, he agreed. Pointing towards the dragons, he uttered questioningly, "They're growing fast. The meat won't be enough for them soon."
Elsa understood his worry. Their diet was increasing as they grew. No one knew how long winter would last and with the war underway, they wouldn't be able to feed four dragons after three or four turns.
"I think they'll be able to start hunting soon. A few sheep's or cattle's might be enough." She mused just as they heard an ear-piercing screech.
She looked up to see Silverwing and Rhaegal fighting over a hunk of meat in the air, making Robb wince and Grey Wind bark at them loudly.
"I don't think you'd be able to hide them much longer." Robb stated casually, but there was a hint of worry in his voice just as he added slowly, "The Lannister's won't stop until they have their heads."
Her eyes turned cold and she hissed through her teeth, "They can try."
Startled, Robb shook his head and explained, "It's not just them. There will be many who would want them… and if not, they would take pride in killing the dragons."
Elsa nodded because it had been her concern until she had figured out how to hide them.
"Well… I've been practising." She started tentatively, unsure how he would react. When he urged her to go on, she pointed towards her dragons whispered, "Look."
Closing her eyes, she held her palms up, picturing a shield surrounding the four dragons. Once done, she opened her eyes and saw Robb looking around, utterly baffled. His eyes were wide and his mouth fell open as he stumbled across his words, "Where – where did they go?"
"With the help of my magic, I can trick people into seeing what I want them to see... or not noticing them and their voices at all." She explained as best as she could.
Robb blinked at her, eyes filled with astonishment as he asked, "You're telling me – they're still here and it's – all an illusion?"
"Astonishing." He muttered with a bright grin at her nod and added, "Wise decision. It seems the stories Old nan used to tell us about magic and dragons were true, then there could be dragonlords as well." He looked at the dragons and said, "You will have to be careful."
Elsa's clenched her teeth and her vision turned red at the mere thought of someone binding her children and using them as slaves. Robb wasn't wrong. It was known that dragonlords used a horn named 'dragonbinder' and sorcery to turn a dragon into their slaves. She needed to find a way, so such things wouldn't affect her children. They were free to do as they wished. They would never be someone's slaves!
Balerion's angry roar brought her out of her furious daze and she found herself staring into Robb's wary, but worried eyes. The shield around her dragons had vanished and she hastily put it back up, needing to keep it around them until they were back in the sky where they will be safe and no one would be able to touch the dragons.
She took in a breath to calm herself and looked at Robb. Taking one of his hands into hers, she vowed, "I will fight by your side until we get our family back, your Grace… and even after that, if need be."
Robb turned pink at the title and shook his head. "Don't call me that. You're my sister."
She nodded and said, "I won't – when we're alone."
Robb perused his lips but didn't argue, knowing it to be vain. He finally said, "We should go back."
Elsa told her dragons to fly and turned around, back towards the camp and asked something which had been bothering her for quite some time now. "Are you afraid?
Her question startled him and he looked away as if ashamed before mumbling a soft, "Yes."
"Me too. But we're in this together." She whispered before promising, "…and we will get them back."
They shared a look, a promise and for the first time since their father had left, Robb felt light. For once, he wasn't alone. He did not have his whole family, but he had his sister and Theon. He had a direwolf and Elsa had dragons, even if they were small. His mother was safe and he would make sure to get his family back even if he had to kill everyone in his path.
They were almost back to the camp when she suddenly remembered and almost hit her head. "I almost forgot!"
With that, pulled out a scroll from her coat and handed it to her brother, who raised an eyebrow questioningly, but took it anyway.
"Maester Aemon asked me to give you this letter. He's going to send it to the others as well." She told him.
"What's in it?" he asked as he opened the letter.
"A wight attacked Castle Black." She replied.
Robb's head snapped up from the letter to meet her violet eyes and he gaped. "A wight? But it's a legend. The Others haven't been seen in thousands of years…"
She said before he could finish. "I saw a dead man attacking Jon with my own eyes… and from what we've seen – it can only be killed by fire."
Robb rubbed his temples, feeling the pain forming in his head. With a tired sigh, he asked, "Should we inform others?
Elsa bit her lower lip and suggested slowly, "Maybe we shouldn't inform anyone just yet. Let's focus on getting our family back."
Robb on the other hand was still grasping the fact that all his childhood stories were coming to life – Targaryen's, dragons, magic and the others.
Unbeknown to his inner turmoil, Elsa continued, "Until then, perhaps sending some men to the wall should suffice?"
He nodded his assent because what else was there to do?
In Front of the Twins
"I'll go with her," Elsa said, stopping the squabble.
Theon looked at her incredulously and stated, "Didn't you hear a word? You're no one! Walder Frey wouldn't let you leave before fucking you raw."
"Theon!" Robb reprimanded angrily, well aware of the animosity that had started between the two ever since Theon had asked Elsa 'that she should marry someone like him – the heir of Iron Islands instead of sleeping with a useless bastard like Jon'. To say that she had not been pleased would be an understatement. Right now, the last thing he wanted was their verbal sparring.
He turned to Elsa and stated firmly, "Theon isn't wrong. Lord Frey's reputation is… less than honourable, and you are my sister. I can't risk you…"
"You're the king. Do you think sending your mother alone to such a place would be wise?" She asked seriously.
"Don't be insane, girl!" Greatjon Umber's voice boomed as he snapped, "Entering the twins with the way you look and Frey will end up eating you alive."
"The way I look?" she asked bemused.
"Dark hair and violet eyes? Any fool could tell you're a Dayne!" he pointed out with a snort.
"I am not." She told him before turning back to Robb and urged, "We don't know where his loyalty lies and sending Lady Catelyn alone could be risky."
Robb opened his mouth to refuse when she pleaded, "You know I can take care of myself."
He looked into her eyes as they conversed without words, much to the annoyance of everyone present. Finally, he asked with a sigh, "Are you sure?"
"Robb!" Lady Catelyn hissed angrily, clearly displeased.
Lord Umber shook his head and muttered under his breath, "Absolutely foolish."
The Twins
The first thing Elsa noticed was that Walder Frey was an elderly man who was bald and toothless with loose skin, though, unlike Maestor Aemon, an aura of darkness surrounded him. He snapped at everyone while groping his new wife – a girl of merely fifteen name-days. The man was utterly disgusting and she instantly hated him.
"Why are you here?" he asked.
"To ask you... to open your gates, My Lord. So, my son and his bannerman may cross the Trident and be on their way." Lady Catelyn told him desperately.
The old man pointed towards Elsa, smiling lecherously and asked, "What is this? A gift to thank me for letting your son and his men cross?"
Elsa stiffened, while Lady Catelyn stated testily, "She's one of my husband's wards, Lord Frey."
"Not a Stark then, hm?" The man walked closer to her, leaned in until she could feel his breath on her face and leered, "You're prettier than any girl I've laid eyes on."
Elsa clenched her fists, eyes on Lady Cat's horrified face. She tried her very best not to punch the man in his balls and gritted out, "You're very kind, Lord Frey."
"What a waste." Frey pulled back and asked Lady Catelyn mockingly, "Your husband is in a cell beneath the Red Keep and your son's got no fur to keep his balls warm."
"You swore an oath to my father!" Lady Catelyn yelled.
"Oh, yes, I said some words... and I swore oaths to the crown too, if I remember right." He mumbled sarcastically.
Elsa understood that the old man knew they were desperate and would do anything he asked. There was no other way, so he was exploiting Lady Catelyn for his advantage.
Lady Catelyn closed her eyes exasperatedly as the man continued, "Joffrey's king now, which makes your boy and his corpses-to-be nothing but rebels, it seems to me. If I had the sense the Gods gave a fish, I'd hand you both over to the Lannister's."
Frustrated and annoyed, Lady Catelyn asked, "Why don't you?"
Walder Frey regarded her and smiled shrewdly.
Robb's Tent outside the Twins
Robb was devising a plan with Theon, Lord Umber, Garth and Carmine, but looked up as soon as they entered and asked, "Well?"
Elsa couldn't control herself and stated, "Lord Walder is a dreadful old fucke…"
"Elsa!" Lady Catelyn snapped sharply, while everyone stared wide-eyed.
Lowering her eyes, Elsa muttered, "…an extremely unpleasant man."
"Lord Walder has generously," she ignored Elsa's unladylike snort and finished, "…granted your crossing."
Robb sighed with relief, exchanging a smile with others, but Elsa knew his relief would be short-lived, feeling dreadful for her kind-hearted brother. The more Lady Catelyn told him about the bargain, the more his face fell before he left the tent, leaving a sombre silence behind. The only one who ended up chuckling was Theon.
