My friends and I was heading to La Push in the Suburban with nine people in it. We were going to go hiking and hang out at the beach. It was a pleasant beach day with the sun shining brightly and a few clouds circled the sky.
We went our way down to the beach, Mike leads the way to a ring of driftwood logs and there was a fire circle already in place, filled with black ashes. Mike, Eric, and Ben gathered broken driftwood branches from the forest edge and had a teepee-shaped construction built atop the old cinders.
Mike lit one of the smaller sticks with a cigarette lighter and it had set ablaze the dry wood. I watched the strange blue and green flames crackle toward the sky.
After a half hour of talking, some of the boys wanted to hike to the nearby tidal pools. I loved tidal pools when I was a child, they had always fascinated me. Due to my clumsiness, I've fallen into them a lot.
Lauren tagged me along yet she didn't want to hike. Angela and Jessica decided to stay on the beach as well. I joined the guys and noticed Mike's huge smile when I follow them.
After the hike, we returned to First Beach and saw our group had expanded. There were locals from the reservation with us who have shining, straight black hair and copper skin.
Food got passed around while Eric introduced us as we entered the driftwood circle. Angela and I was the last to arrive. As Eric said our names, I noticed a younger boy sitting on the stones near the fire glance up at me in interest. I sat down next to Angela and Mike brought us sandwiches and an array of sodas to choose from. The ones from the reservation introduced themselves as Sam, Embry, and Jacob. The last one was the boy who noticed me earlier.
More clouds was looming over us, casted a shadow, and hiding the sun. It looked and smelled like it might rain at any moment. People started to drift off, but I sat alone on my driftwood log, with Lauren and Tyler who was by someone's CD player. Three teenagers from the reservation stayed with us including Jacob.
Jacob replaced Angela's side when she left with the hikers and he sat next to me. He looked fourteen or fifteen, and had long, glossy black hair pulled back with a rubber band at the nape of his neck; had dark eyes, his russet skin was beautiful and silky. Very good looking.
"You're Isabella Swan, aren't you?"
"Bella," I sighed, hating my full name.
"I'm Jacob Black," He held his hand out in a friendly gesture. "You bought my Dad's truck."
"Oh," I shook his sleek hand. "Yeah, I remember you're Billy's son."
"You know Bella, Jacob?" Lauren asked rudely from across the fire.
"We've sort of known each other since I was born." He laughed, smiling at me.
"How nice," She replied coldly, her pale, fishy eyes narrowed. "I was just saying to Tyler that it was too bad none of the Cullens could come out today. Didn't anyone think to invite them?" It was evident her concern was disingenuous.
"You mean Dr. Carlisle Cullen's family?" The tall, older boy asked before I could respond, much to Lauren's irritation. He was really closer to a man than a boy, and his voice was very deep.
"Yes, do you know them?" She asked condescendingly, turning halfway toward him.
"The Cullens don't come here," He said firmly that left no room for more comments.
Tyler tried to win back Lauren's attention by asking her opinion on a CD he was holding, but she was distracted.
I stared at the deep-voiced boy, taken aback, but when I thought he was going to look away from me, he didn't. That's when I felt like something had changed within me, a magnetic pull toward him. His eyes widened as he sucked in a breath, staring at me as if I'm the most beautiful person he ever laid eyes on. But I couldn't fathom what was so interesting about plain me. His gaze was more than just the obsessed stares I've received from Mike, Eric, or Tyler. There was pure and genuine love in his dark brown orbs. I didn't understand how that's possible, but I couldn't find myself to look away or ignore him as Jacob kept talking to me, trying to get my attention.
"Who's your friend?" I blurted out unaware that I interrupted whatever question he had. I caught him off guard. "Huh?" He didn't know who had my attention until he looked what I'm staring at and then understood. A brief flicker of disappointment was on his face before he composed himself. "Oh, that's Sam. Why?"
"Just wondering," I muttered and it was like I became captivated by him. He kept staring at me being intrigued with me. Sam must knew something more about the Cullens and I could get some information out of him. At the mention of the Cullens, I felt no particular attraction to Edward anymore, but he was still a mystery to me. "I'm going to go talk to him." I got up to approach Sam.
"Uh...okay." Jacob responded with a bit of bitterness and jealousy. I didn't know why, we hardly knew each other. It's been years since we were kids.
Sam looked delighted that I was walking over to him. His dark brown eyes twinkled and he had a smile on.
"Hey, uh...Bella, is it?" He asked with interest.
"Yeah, it is," I answered, pleased that he did not call me Isabella. "So, you know the Cullens, huh?"
"I know enough," He answered in a low, almost irritated voice like it upset him that I've brought that family up. "Why do you want to know anything about them?"
"They go to my school," I answered in my defense. By how he was reacting, I probably shouldn't discuss him about this in front of the others. "Do you want to walk down to the beach with me?" I asked, hoping Sam would accept my invite.
"Yeah, sure." He answered eagerly.
We walked across the sandy beach as the clouds covered the sky, casting a shadow across the sea, and the weather got colder. I shoved my hands deep into the pockets of my jacket.
There was something about Sam that allured me to him and I didn't want to leave his side. He must've felt that way about me because he walked closer to me, leaving little room for space in between us.
I didn't hop onto the Cullen question just yet because Sam didn't seem to like talking about them for whatever reason. So, I talked about other things to him first as way a for him to open up.
"How old are you?" That was something I had to know first because of how much of an older man he looked compared to Jacob.
"Nineteen."
"Really?" That surprised me. I never would've guessed. He had a mature, chiseled face, and huge muscles. Probably works out a lot or was on drugs like steroids. "You look a lot older."
"It's because of my deep voice, isn't it?" He asked playfully, but sounded more flirtatious.
"More than that." I replied coyly unintentionally flirted right back to him making him grin, showing off his white teeth.
Normally, I wouldn't have flirted with anyone like this. I would overthink myself about how much I've screwed up at the attempt and also how badly I was at flirting. But with Sam, the act just became easy for me.
"How old are you?" Sam asked in return.
"Seventeen which makes me two years younger than you," I did the quick math inside my head. "Do you go to college?"
"No," He grumbled, sounding slightly miffed. "I planned to, but other things got in the way."
"Like what?" I asked curiously. I was interested to know more about him.
"I'm just busy with work and other things." He answered, but there was something cryptic behind it as if he's hiding something. "What about you? What do you like to do?"
I talked to him about myself and we're very absorbed into our conversation that I forgot the reason why I wanted to talk to him in the first place. I just got so caught up in him.
"What did you mean earlier about the Cullens?" Sam tensed a little at the family name. "That 'they don't come here.'" I tried to imitate his deep voice that got him amused, but then became serious when he was about to explain.
"I can't tell you right now, but all I can tell you is they're no good. So, please, Bella, stay away from them. It's for your own protection." He stopped walking to look at me square in the eyes and his huge hands was holding onto my much smaller and dainty ones.
His plea was urgent and serious like a warning. I didn't understand why. What could be so terribly wrong about the Cullens? I tried to think of Edward's face, but it didn't come up so easily like it used to. I didn't find his features so majestically perfect. Now that I think about it, his beauty was almost too perfect, too flawless. It's unnatural.
There was something in me that wanted to obey Sam. That I should believe him that the Cullens wasn't good at all and I do believe him. I felt there was truth in his words. He only wanted me to be safe. It's like now I'm not under Edward's hypnotic spell, I could see clearly that him and his family's presence did make me uncomfortable.
There were times when I didn't know why Edward didn't like to be around me, like I repelled him. I still didn't understand how he was able to save me from Tyler's truck. Sometimes I felt like I'm a puzzle to him that he couldn't make out. He also acted bipolar to me sometimes which made it frustrating to talk to him.
It's not so easy to talk to Edward like it was with Sam.
Maybe the Cullens truly was no good.
"Edward did warn me that he's not a good friend for me. I wanted to try being friends with him," I remembered our conversation from the cafeteria. Sam got uneasy and it's like it alarmed him that I sort of became friends with Edward and how close of a contact I have with him. "But I will stay away from them. I promise," I added to make him believe I honestly meant it. "But can you tell me why? I do go to school with them so avoiding them entirely might be impossible. Edward still talks to me. Even though we're friends, I can break it off with him."
I wouldn't want to give Edward the wrong idea about us.
"You should for reasons I can tell you at a bonfire this Saturday. I'll take you. It's like a party. We have food and share stories. We have legends about them."
"The Cullens?" I asked with a bit of interest and curiosity, but not like how I first came here. How could the Cullens be a part of their legends?
Sam obviously didn't like them and told me to stay away from them for my protection. I became wary about them now.
He nodded at my question.
"You can come if you want to..." He drifted off his doubt uncertainly.
"I want to come." I accepted and that made him happy. His reaction gave me a rush of pleasure that I got a smile out of him.
"Great."
I wasn't aware that Sam was still holding onto both of my hands. His own felt warm. To the point of being unnaturally warm.
"What is it?" He asked as I studied his face.
"You're very warm." I noticed.
"I get hot easily."
"Are you sure you're not catching a fever or something?" We may be warm blooded humans, but I was concerned of his abnormal body temperature.
"I'm perfectly fine. Healthy as an ox, Bella." Sam assured confidently.
Before I could say anything else, Mike and Jessica was fifty yards away, walking towards us. They're trying to get my attention because it was going to rain soon apparently so we should leave.
A part of me didn't want to leave Sam behind, but he understood. Maybe he felt the same and I said our goodbyes and I hoped I can see him again very soon.
