"Apparently not. She always flirted with me so I thought she was expecting my addresses."
"Flirted? You always argued with her."
"We debated, not argued."
"She obviously did not see it that way. What did you say after your romantic opening line?"
"I elaborated on her unsuitability and her embarrassing family and how I am so generous to overlook all their faults and shortcomings."
"WHAT? You insulted her when you proposed?!"
