Hero's calling

Beta'd by: -

Vin never wanted to be a hero. At first, all she wanted was to survive; to live another day without a random skaa trying to steal her crumbs of bread. Without worrying that a passing nobleman would take her into his chambers, use her, and kill her afterwards.

Then she wanted to understand. She wanted to know what she was, what a Mistborn was. To know what it was like to believe in something, in some one.

But all Vin wants to do now is protect the ones she loves.

Especially the man now bleeding at her feet.

"Elend!" Vin screamed, dropping to the floor. She quickly grabs his head and holds him still. She pulls off her mistcloak and presses it across his wound. The wound given by one they thought was a friend. No… an ally.

Now she only sees it as an enemy. Something that hurt what she loved.

Elend gasps and his spittle turns red with blood. Vin strokes his head.

"I can save you…" Vin turns to the large pool of power. The Well of Ascension. Godhood.

"I'll be right back," she whispers, setting Elend down gently. Vin walks slowly to the Well, stepping into the liquid metal-like substance. With each step, Vin feels the power flow into her. When her head submerges, she feels her earring burn and frantically removes it, dropping it into me depths below.

As soon as the earring left her skin, Vin ascended. Her mind expanded, her body became meaningless. She became power itself.

Vin 'looked' around her. She saw Elend on the ground, knowing the wound could easily be healed with a flick of her hand. She saw the mist creature, standing there, watching here.

It looked… sad. As if it didn't want to hurt Elend. But had to.

Why? Vin wondered, but as she looked into Elends eyes, she realized what must happen. She wasn't supposed to accept the power, to take it and use it. Not like what the Lord Ruler had done.

Instead she had to let the power go. Let the power save the world. Let the power… leave the man she loved to die.

"I can't" she cried softly, stroking an intangible hand against his cheek. But she knew what he wanted. And as his eyes lost focus, her heart shattered.

Vin screamed, and let the power free. And as she did, Vin could hear a voice, loud as thunder.

"I am FREE!"

Izuku Midoriya always wanted to be a hero. Ever since he was a child, he dreamed of becoming someone important, someone to save others. A hero like All Might.

That's why he was here on the beach, training his body. All Might said that his body wasn't strong enough. They had spent a lot of time creating a schedule for him to train, eat, sleep, and study.

Midoriya was going to do his best to get into UA High, one of, if not THE, most prestigious hero schools ever. All Might, his favorite hero and the current number 1, graduated from there when he was a teenager.

It was probably the most amount of work he had ever done in his life. That's not to say he never does any work, just that he had never worked this hard before.

But it was a beautiful night. The moon was shining, the stars were out, and the coast offered a nice calm breeze.

As he worked, Midoriya imagined getting interviewed and being asked about his time training with All Might.

"So what was it like training under All Might, the previous number one hero?"

"It was very enlightening. We spent 10 months working on my Quirk and its usefulness helping the public."

"How so?"

"Well, one of the main focuses of my training was cleaning out an entire beach of old junk."

"Really? Were there any problems with that?"

"Actually, at one point a random girl appeared in a flash of light."

Wait. WHAT?!

Midoriya didn't have much time to think. He had barely just tipped over a broken TV when a bright light blinded him.

He quickly covered his eyes and looked away. Is this someone's Quirk? Midoriya wondered.

As the light dulled, he was surprised to see a young woman laying on the ground. She was around his age, maybe a little older. She was wearing all black, had short-ish hair (not a pixie-cut, but kept at a shoulder length), and wore no shoes.

The most troublesome thing was that her body was steaming.

Midoriya quickly ran forward to the fallen woman.

"Are you okay?" He asked.

No reply came. Midoriya slowly reached out and grabbed the strange person's arm in an attempt to check for a pulse.

Her eyelids open and her eyes flashed a bright white. Midoriya didn't have time to really think about this because the hand he grabbed, twisted around his.

Midoriya flinched and was tossed to the ground as the girl flipped around him and twisted his own arm behind his back.

"Hey! Hey! OW!" Midoriya cried as he spat out sand. "I'm sorry! I was just trying to help." Tears started to form in his eyes as he thought what might happen if he was accused of assaulting the women. There goes my chance at being a hero, he thought.

The grip loosed and Midoriya heard a soft thump. Looking behind him, he saw that the girl had collapsed and was panting. She clutched her chest and groaned, her body now expending large amounts of steam.

Midoriya slowly lifts himself up. He pants and gasps, gripping his arm.

Who is she? Midoriya assumes that she's a pro-hero, but he's never seen her before. And if there's one thing Midoriya knows, it's heros and Quirks.

Speaking of Quirks, what's hers? Does she turn into steam?

Midoriya shakes his head, realizing now isn't the time to be worrying about Quirk identification.

He slowly pulls out his phone and sends a quick message to All Might.

'Mr. All Might, sir, a random woman appeared at the beach. What should I do?'

Midoriya waits as the small 'read' notification appears below his message.

A few moments later, a large cloud of sand explodes and a loud thud is heard.

"I am here!" A voice from the cloud states, and Midoriya can't help but smile. Inside of the cloud is a large man with a huge smile. His face is hidden in shadows but his two twin puffs of hair are clearly visible. The man wears a white t-shirt that is so stretched you could count his abs as well as green cargo pants. He also wears large white sneakers and an unbuttoned trench coat.

"All Might!" Midoriya cries, causing the man to turn to the young boy.

"Young Midoriya, where is the woman you spoke of?" All Might asks as the sand-cloud dissipates.

Midoriya turns back towards the girl and points. "I thought she was a pro-hero and she just lost a fight."

All Might walks over and looks at the young woman with a concerned smile. "I'm afraid I do not recognize this woman. However, I will definitely get her the help she needs." Slowly and carefully, the number one pro-hero picks up the collapsed girl into a bridal carry.

"Should I come with you?" Midoriya asks. "In case you need someone to explain what happened."

All Might pauses, then turns back to Midoriya. "That… might be a good idea."

"You forgot, didn't you?" Midoriya asks, a sweat drop visible on his face.

"No, no, no," All Might defends, waving his hand in front of himself. "I was… waiting for you to ask. It was a test to see if you remembered the emergency procedure!"

Midoriya remains silent for a moment and looks down at his feet. When he looks up, his eyes are watery, "you were testing me?! Did I pass? Or no, I failed. I'm never going to be a pro-hero…"

All Might places a hand on Midoriya's shoulder. "You are fine, Young Midoriya. You have passed my test! I'm sure you will be a great hero. Now, let us take this young lady to a doctor."

Midoriya sniffles and rubs his eyes. "Thank you, All Might. Do you know any hospitals that will let us in at this hour?"

"I know something better," All Might responds as Midoriya grabs onto his back, wrapping his arms on the pro-hero's neck. "Do you want to visit UA High?"

Midoriya's eyes go wide, UA High?! The young boy nods ecstatically.

All Might made sure that his protegee had a good grip around his neck before he got ready to jump. "Ready?"

Midoriya nods, clenching tightly. All Might's smile grows. "Then, let us go!"

Nezu was enjoying a nice cup of tea when he heard the familiar rumble of a certain hero landing in his school zone. Thanks to his Quirk, 'Enhanced Senses,' he was well aware of which direction All Might was coming from, and where he would be landing.

Judging by the booming sounds of him landing and jumping, and where they were coming from, Nezu could easily ascertain that his destination was where Recovery Girl spent her nights while on campus. She had volunteered to start setting up her clinic early.

Neze slowly stood up and dropped down from his chair. He enjoyed another sip of his tea before setting it down and walking towards the room where he could find Recovery Girl.

It took 3 more thumps of leaping before Nezu reached the room. By then, Recovery Girl had also heard some of the loud noises and was outside her door. And, sadly, she stood wearing only slippers and a bathrobe.

Nezu squeaked softly in terror at the sight of this, alerting the pro-hero to his presence. She turns and frowns down at the principle.

"What's all that racket?" She asks.

"Yeah, what's going on?" someone asks.

Nezu turns, looking at one of the now open doors he passed on his way here. "Hello Aizawa, were you awoken as well?"

The hero known as Eraser Head nods. "I was trying to get some sleep. Stupid thumping woke me up. What is it?

Smiling, Nezu turns back to Recovery Girl. "I'm afraid you are about to have some visitors, Shuzenji."

The aging woman raises an eyebrow. "And who is stupid enough to get injured at this hour?"

"I AM HEEEEEERE!" The two faculty members heard as the cause lands on the ground next to them.

Recovery Girl sighs, "of course." This is accompanied by Aizawa facepalming and groaning.

A few moments later, All Might, in his large muscular form, burst into the dorms. He falters when he notices his fellow staff already out and ready to meet him.

"Did you know I was coming?"

Aizawa rolls his eyes, "I think every villian, hero, and civilian heard you coming [1]."

Nezu realizes that the number one hero was not alone. He notices that he carries a young woman in his arms, and a younger male runs up next to him.

"All Might, you said we were going to get her help." The lad states.

"Who needs help?" Recovery Girl asks, causing the boy to gasp.

"You… You're Recovery Girl! You're Quirk, recovery, is one of the most useful ones in medical development. I read you have saved over 1 million lives within your first year as a pro-hero!" [2]

Aizawa glares at the boy. "Who is this?"

All Might's grin grows wider, "Izuku Midoriya, my protege. And this," he lays the maiden in front of Recovery Girl, "is your patient. Midoriya found her during his training."

The young man, Midoriya, nods. "She appeared in a flash of light. At first I thought that was her quirk, but she was also steaming so I thought maybe she could turn into steam and what I saw was just her condensing into her human form."

Nezu raises an eyebrow. Very perceptive. "But what about the sixth law of Quirk Dynamics?"

Midoriya responds without thinking, "'Quirks cannot be activated while their user is unconscious'? I thought about that, but it could have just been left over residue from her transformation."

"And how is it you are aware of such a complex study, Mr. Izuku?"

Blushing, Midoriya says, "I've always had a fascination with Quirks."

Recovery Girl humphs. "What does that have to do with any of what is currently going on?"

"I apologize, Shuzenji. Please ignore us," Nezu responds.

Midoriya blushes. "I'm sorry."

Humphing (again), Recovery Girl leans down and studies the girl. "There seems to be nothing wrong with her physically." She pokes the girl with her cane, causing her to grunt and moan. "And there appears to be no internal damage. She seems in perfect health."

"Then why hasn't she woken up?" Aizawa asks.

Everyone pauses to ponder this question.

"Has anyone even tried to wake her up?"

The staff members turn to look at Midoriya, who shuffles his feet. "I, uh, did. But she attacked me. Then she collapsed again."

Aizawa glares at the boy. "So you brought a possible villain here?!"

Nezu holds up his hands (paws). "Aizawa, we are not aware of this woman's nature. However, do not fault young Izuku Midoriya for this. He simply saw someone in need of help and requested it."

Growling, Aizawa points at the number one hero. "I'm talking about this idiot. He didn't check, he didn't call it in. In fact, I wasn't even aware that he had a student. It seems awfully suspicious if you ask me."

All Might coughs up some blood. "I was not trying to go around your back, my friend. I was just respecting the wishes of young Midoriya, who wanted to bring the young woman here as quickly as possible."

Nezu places a paw on Aizawa's leg. "Peace, my friend. Let's not focus on what could have been done. Instead, let us see what we can do." The Quirked mouse turns back to All Might. "However, I think it might be reasonable to take this young woman to a safe location."

All Might nods and picks up the woman yet again. Nezu leads the way to one of the detention cells that are used to keep less than compliant students from causing damage to others.

Along the way, the young protege of All Might's seemed to study everything with reverence, commenting on certain classrooms and which pro-hero's graduated from them.

A fascination indeed, Nezu remarks. "Do you wish to come to my school, young man?"

Midoriya nods ecstatically. "Yes! It's my dream to become a pro-hero and graduate from UA High."

Nezu smiles. "And why do you want to be a pro-hero?"

"I want," Midoriya explains, "to save others with a smile."

Behind him, Aizawa grunts, mumbling about how that's a 'foolish dream'.

Nezu, who easily hears this, ignores the grumpy teacher. "That's a selfless dream you have, Midoryia. I hope you can bring it to fruition."

All Might opens the door in front of them. "We are here!" He exclaims as they walk into the detention center. The walls and ceilings were all padded and the ceiling was a nice smooth metal. It reflected easily with multiple rooms to place 'troubled' students.

Setting the girl on one of the cots in the rooms, All Might made sure the girl was comfortable before pulling the metal bars across the entrance.

"You are safe now, young one," he stated as the doors locked.

When Vin woke up, she realized she was not in the Final Empire anymore. In fact, she didn't think she was even on Scadrial anymore.

Why did she think this? The talking mouse made a compelling argument.

As Vin's eyelids opened, she first noticed the light above her.

Where am I? She wondered as she sat up, noticing the bed she was sleeping in. It was softer than anything she had felt in her life.

Vin distrusted it immediately. Soft isn't a verb used to describe anything in the Final Empire. Getting up, she confirmed that this was not somewhere she recognized as 'home.'

There were glass torches producing lights in the ceiling. The floor was a clean sheet of metal that was almost reflective. The walls seemed to be some sort of… sponge. When she pressed her hand against it, it merely absorbed her hand, to an extent.

Also in her room, was a desk and chair. They were of a greater make than any she had ever seen, but not as ornate. They had wooden souls and metal legs.

Wait. Metal!? The use of metals, outside of Allomancy, was practically unheard of. Especially metal that was as refined as this. It had no blemishes, no sight of rust, even.

Across from this, a large metal gate covered the open center. Vin could see a few more rooms like the one she's in, as well as a fairly large rodent sitting near the front of the main room. Strangely, the mouse also wears a suit and sports a large scar around his eye.

The mouse seems to notice Vin's movements. It turns to her and sets down a small teacup.

"Hello there," the mouse said as he walked towards the metal gates. "My name is Nezu. I am the Principle of UA High, where you are currently located. Do you know what is going on?"

Vin studies the mouse, Nezu. He certainly seemed human-minded. Yet she had seen Kandras portray dogs before. Was a large mouse really so far-fetched?

Vin tries to burn her metals, only to realize that they had all burned away. Frowning, she walks toward the bars and wraps her hands around them.

"I'm being imprisoned," the young Mistborn stated.

Nezu shakes his head. "No, you are being detained until we know if you should be let free, or if we should be alerting the authorities."

Vin raises her eyebrow. "Authorities? Do you mean the Garrison? Let me get in touch with Clubs. He will explain everything."

Nezu looks puzzled, as well as a mouse could anyway. "Garrison? I'm afraid I do not understand what you mean. You would be given to the JSDF."

"JSDF?" Vin as quizzically. "What is that?"

"The Japan Special Defense Force," Nezu responds.

"Japan? Where is that?"

Nezu frowns. "Japan is a country on Earth."

Vin takes a moment to process this. "Earth? Not Scadrial?"

Shaking his head, Nezu responds. "I am afraid, I have never heard of the word 'Scadrial' before. Was that a city? A state? A country?"

Vin sighs and takes her hands off the bars. "A planet…

"My home."

Well how do you like that? My second story, and it's about 2 times larger than my last story's opener. I realize it's not as long as my usual chapters, but it's just the pilot sooo… suffer.

A lot of fun went into this one. But I am afraid I am not as knowledgeable as I am MHA as I am Cosmerically or ith RWBY. So, I am accepting beta offers if anyone wants to help out.

I hope you all enjoyed this one. Looks like it'll be a lot of fun to write.

Please, feel free to follow and comment predictions, thoughts, etc. I am always looking for new ways to improve my craft. Tell your friends!
