"Aren't we going to be late?" Midoriya asks as he raises his right hand. Almost a full school week has passed since their first day of class and his confession. Since Monday, where he had explained his true powers to Vin, she had spent the last few days helping to train him better. She had initially offered the school's gym but Midoriya wasn't fully ready to commit to such a public location where might have to talk about 'his' Quirk.
So, instead, they were reusing the beach where All Might had him train so his body could withstand OFA. Every morning and evening, before and after class, Vin had Midoriya exercising, powering up, and even just explaining how his powers work. He wasn't allowed to use his powers. After all, neither of them had any sort of healing Quirk and it would take a while to have Recovery Girl make her way over here (or them to her). Midoriya was also still unused to using his powers, so Vin tried to keep him at least at somewhat of a comfort level.
Until today, that is.
Vin shook her head, standing a few meters away from Midoriya. "We have enough time for one practice shot," she explained. A large pile of metal remains from his cleanup sat behind her. "All you have to do is hit me in the chest. I'm Pushing behind me slightly to keep my balance so you do not have to worry about holding back. Just do what we've been practicing."
Nodding, Midoriya's fingers spread as he made a flicking gesture. With his thumb holding back his middle finger, he pointed it towards Vin. Like a sniper, he closed his left eye and lined up his 'shot'. One for All, he thought, 1% power!
He flicked his finger and fired a shot of compressed air. The nearly visible blast moved faster than he could blink, hitting Vin square in the chest. She grunted and hunched at the blow, skidding backward a few feet. For a brief moment, Midoriya thought maybe he flicked too hard (in fact, it was the opposite; he had instead meant to keep the attack as weak as he could).
Luckily, Vin stopped before her back could be embedded with a large metal spike. Could she use her powers on metals embedded inside of people? Or could she 'burn' a metal that is not swallowed? Midoriya shook his head, realizing this wasn't the time for that, and ran forward to help his classmate.
He needn't have bothered. By the time he caught up to her, Vin was already back on her feet, so to speak, and dusting herself off.
"A-a-are you okay?" he asked, worriedly.
Vin let out a cough and rubbed where his attack landed. "Yes, I'm fine." She looks up at Midoriya and frowns. "Did it work?"
Shaking his head, Midoriya lets out a sigh. "No… But I'm sure I can do it! If I just visualize the percentage concept in form of the decimal system, I should be able to access less than 1% of One for All. More like… .5%?" Midoriya became less and less sure of this as he talked. Is it even possible to do that? I've never even heard of a Quirk that works in rates.
"We'll just have to keep practicing," Vin explains, walking back to the staircase between the beach and the parking lot. Midoriya quickly followed, doing his best to rub the wrinkles out of his school uniform. Sand particles fell to the ground as he rolled his sleeves. It wasn't until he began to move his right hand that he winced in pain.
Oh, he realized, looking down at his bruised, purple digit. I almost forgot about this. Tears begin to roll down his face. "V-v-v-v-vin," he mumbled, "can we hurry up, p-p-please?"
Realizing what he was worried about, she nodded quickly and grabbed both of their bags. "Do you trust me?" Vin asks. She outstretches a hand, which Midoriya studies.
Does he? Midoriya has already told her his greatest secret. But how well does he know her? She told me about her Quirk, a part of him argued. Doesn't that mean she trusts you? It didn't. Midoriya had spent enough time studying heroes and people in his solitude to recognize the weight of a secret. Do you really? You never knew All Might had one.
Shaking his head, as if to physically clear the thoughts from his mind, he looked up at Vin and her outstretched palm. Then, with his good hand, he took hers.
Vin burned pewter as she lifted Midoriya onto her back. Then, when he was safely attached, she mentally grabbed a hold of one of the metal bars fencing the beach and flared steel. The metal seemed to bend slightly as she jumped with Midoriya on her back. The Push launched them both upward and into the sky. Vin was careful, however, to not push too hard and fling themself too high.
Thank goodness I'm wearing bloomers under this stupid skirt.
"Oh my God!" Midoriya yelled as they just barely reached the ledge of a small building. Von grunted and flared pewter as they landed, falling into a crouch. Then, she jumps backward. Her passenger screams as she does, causing her to lose focus for a moment. She briefly misses a flag pole to Pull on before noticing a red object embedded into the street below.
She Pushes on it and holds the Push as their trajectory lowers. Slowly but surely, they reach a point where Vin can aim directly towards a street she knew would lead towards UA. Pulling her legs up, Vin made herself as ball-like as possible. She reached inside of her, grimacing at the memory of her last attempt of this move, and burned duralumin.
Vin's ears popped and the wind roared as they rocket forward. Vin and Midoriya spun over and around like a coin in midair. Slowly, Vin tried to stretch her limbs. But she found the air to be quite resilient and fumbled for her waist where she kept a secondary vial.
I can't… REACH! Vin panicked slightly at this. Without metals, she was no one. Without them, she couldn't do anything.
Without them, they would die on the incoming pavement.
Struggling to turn her head, Vin does her best to yell into Midoriya's ear. "Vial! Belt! Quickly!" She feels him nod into her back and shuffle a bit as he reaches down to her waist. Eyes watering, Vin squints ahead of them and realizes that the ground below has grown closer than she projected.
Midoriya's hand suddenly slips into hers. Wrapping her fingers around the cool, vial glass, Vin used her thumb to pop the cork and bring the container to her lips. With the wind, the metal shavings seemed to fling themselves down her throat. The fire inside of her rekindles and she instinctively begins to burn pewter, iron, and steel.
Letting out a soft sigh, Vin briefly enjoys the feeling of the warmth now coursing through her body. Midoriya begins to scream as they fall closer and closer to the ground. The front gates of UA are visible from this vicinity, but not close enough for a Push or Pull.
What is close enough is a sewer grate. Pulling on it, as well as Pushing to keep from hitting it too hard, Vin flares pewter as they hit the ground. Damn! she groans as her knees buckle.
Midoriya drops from her back and quickly moves around to help her up. "A-a-are you okay?" he asks.
Before she could answer, dozens of people ran up to them. Strange boxes and metal bars are shoved near their faces as flashing lights burst around them.
"Are you two students of UA?"
"Are you a part of All Might's class?"
"Why were you using your Quirk just now?"
"What is your Quirk?"
"How do All Might's teachings compare to that of the normal teachers?"
Vin winces at the sounds and bright lights. "What?" She covers her eyes and takes a step forward, only for her knees to buckle. Midoriya catches her.
Instantly, the crowd of reporters rushed forward. "Were you training under All Might's orders?"
"What is it like to have the symbol of peace in your classroom?"
"Does he approve of you two dating?"
Uncontrollably, Vin blushes at that last comment. Midoriya's face turns a bright red as well. Shaking his hand back and forth, he panics.
"Uh, excuse me!" he yelps. "We have to go to the nurse's office." He quickly pulls Vin forward and towards the school's gates.
Shuzenji shook her head as she planted a soft kiss on Vin's knee. "I know why he's here," she points at Midoriya, "but I don't know why he's pulling you into his mess. Dealing with one of you having daily injuries was bad enough, but if you end up back here before the end of the week, we'll need to have a talk." She smiles and leans on her cane.
Strangely, Vin always felt comfortable around the recovery Hero. Even though her eyes were barely open, she could see a level of awareness behind them. Like she's seen the worst of humanity but has survived it without losing that which she loved.
It gave Vin hope.
"It's my f-f-fault," Midoriya muttered. "I asked Vin to help me t-t-t-train with my Quirk so I wouldn't break my body anymore." He had already received his dose of Shuzenji's Quirk and his finger was already returning to its normal shade.
Tsk-ing, Shuzenji turned to the green-haired boy. "Now, now. You mustn't berate yourself for someone else's choices.
Midoriya frowned. "But I-"
"She's right," Vin sighed. "I'm doing this because I want to. And it's my fault for getting injured." If Kelsier knew I sprained an ankle after a faulty steel-push, he would have laughed so hard an unformed mistwraith could have heard him. She jumps from the table and kicks her leg out. "Besides… it's not like I'm just doing this for you."
Midoriya gulped and nodded. Before he could ask what she meant by that, a loud horn echoed throughout the building followed by dozens of small tremors. Both Vin and Midoriya acted instantly and each made their own movements to protect themselves. Vin crouched into a small stance and grabbed a pen from the bedside table, while Midoriya did his best to act as a shield by putting himself between Shuzenji and the door.
"Oh my, oh my," the Pro-Hero cackled. "Those reporters sure are excitable these days."
Vin spun around and looked out the window. "What was that?"
"Oh just the UA Barrier activating." Shuzenji slowly made her way over to Vin's window and used her cane to point at the entryway below. From here, Vin could see that a large metal plate had slid down over the main gate. "There are sensors all over the school to ensure only students, staff, and permitted individuals are allowed to enter. If not…"
"Lockdown," Vin finishes. She lets out a breath and shakes her head. "Will this affect classes in any way?"
Shuzenji raises an eyebrow and her smile widens. "Excited for today's class, hmm?"
"Why? What's going to happen?" Midoriya asks.
During this last week, Vin has found herself bored during most of her classes. Even the Hero class has been focusing on procedure and law, something Vin could honestly care less about. If she was honest with herself, the only reason she was still going to classes was to see her friends.
Suffice to say, without the time she took helping Midoriya train, Vin wouldn't have much of a reason to leave the gym.
But then she heard through the staff what was in store for today. Finally, something she could work on. And part of her was longing to wear her mistcloak again.
Not to mention, maybe I can show that koloss his place, again, Vin thought with a smirk tugging at her lips.
When no one answered, Midoriya asked again. "What's supposed to happen today?"
"A trial of rescue," Shuzenji answered with a smile.
"Yes," Aizawa sighed. "We will be going on another excursion today. However, before that, we will be focusing on something far more important. So don't get ahead of yourself."
Homeroom had begun. And, as she promised, the UA barrier hadn't impeded on their classes. Iida was the first one there, followed quickly by Momo. Then everyone else trickled in slowly. Each one of them made some comment or complaint about the reporters, even their teacher.
Aizawa pulled out a small stack of papers from his desk and held them up. "I took the liberty to evaluate and mark your combat training from earlier this week. Good work to most of you. However-" the Pro-Hero turns to look at a select few students, "-Bakugou, you have talent, a lot of it, but you need to get that anger of you under control. Stop acting like a child and wasting your talent."
"..." Bakugou frowns and dips his head. "Yeah, I know."
"And Midoriya," Aizawa continues, "you apparently decided your match by breaking your arm again. You cannot keep using the same excuse that you can't help it because you can't control your Quirk. But if you can learn to control it, I'm sure you will be a valuable asset in the field. Do it quickly"
The green-haired boy's head dipped at his teacher's critique. But at Aizawa's final remark, he sat up sharply and smiled. "Yes sir!" Midoriya responded.
Aizawa nods at the teen before turning to Vin. "And Vin. I believe I've already told you not to attack your fellow students back during the Quirk Assessment Test. You'll be serving time in the detention hall this weekend."
Great, Vin thought to herself, another weekend of training with another Pro.
"B-b-but, sir! She was only trying to help me," Midoriya stutters.
Aizawa glared at the boy. "She attacked a student. There was more than enough time for All Might to help you if he thought it was necessary. And I hope that Bakugou wasn't foolish enough to try and land a killing blow." The Pro-Hero sighs. "Besides, we need to focus on homeroom business. Sorry for the late notice, but today you'll be deciding your class president."
"That's so normal!" Sero yelps before the class fell into chaos. Instantly, students begin to raise their hands and volunteer for the position.
Kirishima raises both arms into the air. "I want to be class pres! Pick me!"
"Me too!" Kaminari adds.
Even Jiro raises her hand. "I want to do it too."
Aoyama winks before commenting, "this sounds like a job for m-"
"-Me, me!" Ashido interrupts. "I wanna be the leader!"
"I'll be the leader, dammit!" Bakugou snarls.
Is there a way I can elect myself out of this? Vin thought
"Silence please, everyone!" a voice barked, slicing through the outbursts and bringing all conversation to a halt. Iida, with his own hand raised, pushes his glasses up his nose and continues, stating, "this is a job with a lot of responsibility for leading others. It is not a job for just anyone who wants to take it. It is a job which requires the trust and great esteem of those around you.
"The only true way to determine who should be our leader is to enact a truly democratic vote, reflected by the will of the people!"
For a moment, Vin could almost imagine Elend smiling. He would have enjoyed Iida and would have loved to come up with a small governmental way to choose a class leader. As she let that daydream distract her, she did not notice as Iida wrote down the entire roster of the class on the board.
"Is this fine with you, Mr. Aizawa?" Iida asked, turning to the now-cocooned teacher. Inside of the sleeping bag, he made a nodding motion before huddling into a corner.
Tsuyu raised a finger to her lips as scraps of paper were passed around to each member of the class. "We haven't known each other for that long, though," she frowned. "How can you trust anyone that much already?"
"Yeah, won't everyone just vote for themselves?" Kirishima adds.
Vin frowns. "That shouldn't be allowed, then. If you want this to be completely unbiased and up to the people, then those who are running for a position of power should not be allowed to vote for themselves. It's up to the people, after all, and they should not have sway over a close decision."
Everyone turns towards the Mistborn with slacked jaws.
"What?"
Shouji shakes his head and forms a mouth with one of his tentacles. "This is the first time we have heard you speak with so many words."
"And about politics no less!" Hagakure adds with her hands on her cheeks in mock surprise.
Blushing hard, Vin tries to sink back in her chair. "It's a… passion of an old friend."
"Just a friend?" Mina teases, elbowing Vin softly. "Sounds like he or she might mean a lot more to you than you're letting on."
Vin's face could not have turned redder if she tried to riot her own emotions. Luckily, Iida came to her save and lifted up a pen.
"Then let us begin!" He scrawls something down on his paper and places it onto Aizawa's desk. "Everyone please vote for whomever you wish to see as our class president and bring your ballets up here. When everyone is done, we shall see who won."
One by one, everyone casts their votes. Even Vin, who feels as if she doesn't deserve this, quickly writes down a name and tosses it to the table.
Vin, Midoriya, and Iida all stared at the whiteboard in shock and surprise. Only four names remained. From the bottom, Bakugou had one vote, which the teen loudly stated was his own vote. ("I'll vote for my damn self if I want to!")
Then Momo with three votes and Midoriya with three as well.
And, surprisingly, Vin with 13 votes.
13!
"I got three votes!?" Midoriya exclaimed.
Bakugou's hands clenched as he jumped to his feet. "Who the hell voted for Deku?!"
Tears began to fall down Iida's face as he hunched over his desk. "Zero… votes… I didn't get any votes!"
"I figured that would happen," Mina giggles.
"Wait," Satou frowns, "but Midoriya and Yaoyorozu both have three votes.
Midoriya quickly offered to resign after raising a shaking hand. "I-i-i-i don't r-r-r-really want it!" he stuttered.
Moments later, Vin and Momo found themselves standing shoulder to shoulder in the front of the room. "Our class rep will be Vin Venture and the deputy representative will be Momo Yaoyorozu," Tokoyami declares. The room evolved into claps and cheers as Momo bowed.
Vin, however, looked back and forth between the exit and the wall clock repeatedly. Why did I open my mouth?
The bell rang shortly after, thankfully, and Aizawa dismissed the class. But as Vin made a move to leave the room, he grabbed her arm and pulled her back inside.
"Do you really think this is a good idea?" he asked.
Vin shook her head and sighed. "Trust me, I'd rather not be in this position."
"Then why didn't you turn it down?"
"I… I don't know." Even though it went against every fiber of her being, it was strangely enjoyable to be selected by her classmates and given applause. Some part of her remembered the dances she took part in during Kelsier's revolution. Memories of the balls she went to still fill her with joy.
Aizawa frowned. "Listen, I think it might be safer if you find a way to secede. Your… unique position isn't one we would like to broadcast. And, personally, the limelight isn't as glamorous as everyone thinks it is."
"You're telling me," Vin mumbled.
"It's much easier to work from the shadows and behind the scenes without having to worry about public recompense," he explained. "Heroes like All Might utilize the general consensus to promote their deeds and keep everyone happy. Other heroes work out of public view and provide… less appreciative work."
"Which you think I would be perfect for."
Nodding, Aizawa walks over to his desk and pulls out a small folder. "This Sunday, I've prepared a mock battle between you and a pro. If you handle that…" He pulls out a separate card. "Then I might- might -allow you to go on patrols with a supervisor."
Vin notices the card he pulled out contains a photo of her and a list of her abilities. A pro-Hero license, she realizes.
"A practice license, "Aizawa corrects, noticing the surprise in Vin's eyes. "Not even a provisional is one-of-a-kind. Do not lose it." He holds out the card, which Vin takes. "But if I catch, or even hear about, you using your abilities, I will take this back."
Sliding the card into her breast pocket, Vin mumbles a thank you. Then, in an act of Japanese gratitude, she gives Aizawa a bow.
The man turns away. "Yeah, just don't be late for class," he grumbled before returning to his sleeping pouch.
And as Vin ran out the door, she did her best not to smile.
"I think we all voted for Vin," Hagakure laughed as she slurped a noodle. Vin found it interesting that as soon as her mouth closed around the food, it disappeared. Part of her half expected the food to be visible as she ate it. Even if it didn't make much sense if it did.
Momo shook her head and sighed. "As happy as I am for you, I still feel as if I could have done more to prove myself."
"I voted for you," Vin offered. "To be honest, I don't even want the position."
"Then why didn't you just decline?" Jiro asks with a frown before using her chopsticks to tap against her tray.
Vin shrugged. "I don't know. Was that even an option?"
"Midoriya did it," Hagakure pointed out. Across the food court, Vin could see Midoriya, Uraraka, and Iida grouped together at one table. They all seemed to be intently focused on something Iida was saying.
Vin hesitantly reached inside of her to burn tin but stopped. They are my friends, she scolded, and they deserve their privacy.
That was, of course, when all hell broke loose.
Louder and more urgent than the one from earlier, an alarm began to blare throughout the cafeteria. Vin, along with most of her classmates, quickly jumped to their feet. However, unlike the rest of her compatriots, Vin fell into a combative stance and preemptively pulled out an extra vial of metal shavings.
"Security breach level 3. Security breach level 3," an automated voice declares. "All students, please promptly evacuate in a calm and orderly fashion."
Nobody must have heard the last part of that sentence, as everyone instantly began to panic, scream, and storm towards the doors. Vin and her friends were shoved to the ground as a torrent of students ran through them (one of them, literally!).
"What's going on?" Vin heard Momo ask. "What's code 3?"
Iida rushed over, along with Midoriya and Uraraka, and helped Vin up. "There's an intruder on the school grounds!" he explained. The group of seven then felt the ground shake as another wave of students crashed into them.
Everyone was slammed into the back end of the initial group of students. Bodies wriggled and pressed against each other with force. However, no ground was made towards the door.
"What's with all of this all of a sudden?" Uraraka gasped.
"As expected of the prestige of UA!" Iida commented as he was pushed back into another student. "Everyone is acting swiftly in this crisis!"
Hagakure, who Vin could no longer see through the mesh of bodies, cried out, yelling. "Too much! It's causing a tsunami!"
"Vin, could you-" Midoriya asked before being swept away with a loud yelp.
Instinctively, Vin grabbed a hold of the metals within her. Brass and duralumin should help, Vin thought. But before she could burn the metals, she froze and remembered Aizawa's words.
No Allomancy.
Grimacing at an elbow to her stomach, Vin snuffed the metals. When she looked up, she was shocked to see the flailing body of Iida spinning in the air. His calf-engines exhaled and revved as he cartwheeled above everyone's heads.
"Engine boost!" he proclaimed before he landed atop the door frame's exit sign. Holding himself flat against the wall, and grabbing a pipe near the roofing, Iida opened his mouth and yelled as loud as he could.
"EVERYONE!" Iida boomed, causing the entire student body to freeze. Even Vin was shocked at the brazenness of the teen. "It's just the news media! There is nothing to worry about! Everything is fine!" His feet quivered as he struggled to keep himself perched on top of the sign. "This is UA. Let us act in a way befitting the best of the best! The police and pro-Heroes will be here soon to deal with the situation. Let's all proceed to the exits one at a time."
"Hey look!" someone yelled. "The police are here!" Quickly after that, another announcement was made declaring how the intruders were dealt with and everyone should resume their normal class schedule.
When Iida returned to the ground, and after Uraraka released him from her Quirk's hold, a small group of students, including Hagakure, Jiro, Midoriya, and Uraraka, all applauded him. He blushed softly and bowed to his toes. After he stood back up, Vin melted down and picked something up off the floor.
"You dropped these." Vin held out Iida's glasses, which he quickly took and placed on his nose.
Iida smiled. "Thank you. I'm sure you would have done the same in my shoes."
No, I wouldn't, Vin thought.
"I will be stepping down from class president to allow Mo- Yaoyorozu to lead instead."
After returning to their homeroom, it was (apparently) the class representative's job to lead everyone in picking class officers as well as other school duties. When Vin was asked to head to the front of the class, she did so with Momo at her side.
"However," Vin continued, "I would like to nominate Iida as her vice-president. He was able to focus everyone's attention on himself in a manner that wouldn't harm anyone-" physically or emotionally "-and showed true leadership capabilities I do not have." She turned to Momo and asked, "does this work for you?"
The girl smiled and nodded. "Yes, of course. It would be my honor to serve alongside him."
"Iida was pretty manly today," Kirishima nodded.
Kaminari snickered. "Yeah. He even looked like an emergency exit sign, didn't he?"
As everyone began to nod and utter words of agreement, Iida couldn't help but look around in shock.
At least, until, Aizawa poked his head from his sleeping pouch. "You're wasting time," he growled. "Just hurry up and pick someone."
Iida rose from his seat and smiled. "If the class representative has nominated me, I have no choice. I, Tenya Iida, shall do my best to carry out the duties of a class representative."
"Yeah! You go, Emergency Exit Iida!" Sero cheered. The name quickly caught on and soon the classroom devolved into cheers of 'emergency exit Iida'.
As he walked to the front of the classroom, Vin took her seat and sighed. That's one problem dealt with, she thought before feeling a finger jab into her pack.
"Hey," Hagukure whispered after Vin turned around, "how do you think those reporters got inside anyway? The barrier should be able to keep everybody out, right?"
"Unless someone used their Quirk," Vin answered.
Hagakure frowned and crossed her arms. "But that's not allowed."
"Not everyone is willing to follow the rules. Especially if they can get something out of it."
"I guess…"
Vin offered a small smile to her friend. "It'll be alright. Nothing is going to happen."
Hagakure smiled back. "Thanks, Vin!"
As Vin turned around, she began to think about what Hagakure said. In this world, nobody would break the law, or else they'd be punished. It's possible someone was desperate, but not enough to risk their way of life.
Was this an attack?
Hey, hey, everyone! As you can see, I am not dead!
I realize it has been a while and I am sorry. A lot has been happening (as I am sure you guys can expect with this time of season) and I feel as if my battery was drained for a while. But don't worry, I'm not stopping! Definitely not in the middle of an arc!
This chapter stuck a lot to canon. However, I hope there was enough original material to keep you entertained. (Some of it may or may not be important in the future!)
And you read correctly, I am requesting another Beta/Editor. I do not know why they keep leaving me. All I know is one day we are working on a chapter, creating outlines and such, then they never answer my emails or messages.
I'm sure you can all guess what happens in the next chapter! So stay tuned! I promise to try and update before 2022 begins.
Thank you all so much for sticking with me and reading along. Honestly, it's one of the main reasons I haven't just given up. Your support really keeps me going. Thanks! :)
