The door opened, and Katie instantly ran to greet Rachel once sensing it was her who entered the bedroom. "So!" The feline's tail wagged like a hyperactive puppy. "Is that girl gonna get the goods?"

Rachel just comically rolled her eyes. "Yes, Hiro was able to convince Karmi to ask about Orso Knox..." She trailed off.

"But you don't think Liv is gonna tell her, right?"

"Right." She rubbed her eyes. "Think, why would Liv say the same answer over and over, she can't be that stuck on fixing Knox, right?"

"Maybe she isn't fixing Knox." Katie meowed. "Maybe she's the reason Knox is a monster in the first place."

Rachel gave her a weird look. "Okay, way to jump on the conspiracy theory there."

The cat deflated. "Fine, I'll drop it, for now."

Why do I have a feeling that "for now" will return later? "Okay, so Hiro and I, and Fred will be going to Sycorax tomorrow." Rachel went to her drawer, looking for items to bring. "You're not going."

Katie meowed in agreement. "I don't want Liv to get a sample of my fur and extract my DNA for her monster experiments."

"The paranoia keeps rolling." The scruffy brunette groaned. "But I don't trust that woman around you, helpful CEO or not, I don't want another bioengineer getting you in their claws."

"And you call me the conspiracy theorist." Katie rolled her eyes. "What are you gonna bring?"

Rachel pulled out a pair of spectacles that had shiny lenses. "These."

"Bye Aunt Cass, I'm going out for a bit!"

"Okay, be back by dinner!" His aunt waved as Hiro was about to exit the cafe. But then he felt a hand touch his shoulder.

"Where are you off to?" Ari raised an eyebrow. "It's the weekend, no school for you or me."

"Oh, I'm just uh…" Hiro stuttered, Baymax blinking at him. "Going for a walk?"

"Baymax?" Ari turned to the robot. "Where are you guys going?"

As much as Hiro gestured for Baymax to not say anything, the healthcare companion was programmed to be honest. "We are going to Sycorax to check up on Karmi."

Ari blinked. "Why would you visit-" She smiled. "Aww Hiro, you miss her at SFIT don't you?"

Hiro just gave her a weird look. "Wh-wh I did not miss her! It's strictly a professional outing!"

"Don't lie to your sister, I can see the blush." Ari teased. "You liiiike her." She rolled her tongue.

He just sputtered in embarrassment. "Please stop!"

"Hiro, the increased blush on your cheeks is a sign of attract-"

"Not helping Baymax!" He shoved him through the door. "Bye Ari, see you later!"

"Bye Hiro, have fun with your girlfriend."

"She's not my girlfriend!"

Ari just giggled as Hiro left. "Ah, that never gets old. I should stop messing with him… nah."

That morning at Sycorax, Karmi had arrived at her internship as usual. Checking in at the front door, inspecting her viruses at her lab, assisting the specimens team… Her internship was usually packed with various chores, and when she wasn't taking a break or working, she was researching.

Hiro texted her around the afternoon when she got into the elevator to head back up to the specimens lab.

Genius Boy: Any news on Knox from your BFF yet?"

Karmi rolled her eyes.

Karmi: No. I'm too busy doing my rounds

Genius Boy: What kind of rounds?

Karmi: -_-

Genius Boy: Sorry if it's trade secret

Karmi: It's mostly me running around when I'm not doing assignments in my lab

Genius Boy: What is with internships and making us run so much.

Karmi: Idk

The elevator beeping got her attention, so she hit a quick "ttyl" text and ran off.

When she finally got to her lab, she quickly went to the computer and searched for Orso Knox. She found one file and clicked it.

But it didn't open, it just buzzed.

"What the-?" She tried again, and got the same result. "What?" Karmi narrowed her eyes at the computer. "Uch. Maybe I should ask Liv, I don't want to bother her though…"

It couldn't hurt to ask Chris if Liv was available. So she exited her lab and looked for the assistant, he was at the front desk like usual.

He smiled when seeing Karmi walk up to him. "Oh, hi there Karmi! Do you need something to do?"

"No, but is it okay if I see Liv?" She shyly asked. "If it's not too much of a hassle."

"Oh no, it's fine! I'll call her now." Chris beamed, and he pressed a few buttons on the computer to call Liv. "Ambitious and adorable intern Karmi wants to see you."
"Of course, send her in."

He paused the call. "See?"

"Thank you." Karmi chuckled. "I'll just… get going."

Her heart was still pounding as she entered the office, Karmi nervously rubbed her sleeve while walking in.

Liv greeted her with a smile. "Karmi. How are you? Can I get you anything?" A few drones flew by. "Sustainable water? Pseudo juice? Air brewed tea?"

"Oh, no. That's-"

The CEO turned to her call. "Chris, bring Karmi some tea." She paused. "He makes the best air brew."

"I'm sorry to bother you, Liv." This was a mistake. "I know you're super busy."

But Liv waved her off. "Are you kidding? My door's always open for you." She told her. "Literally. The door recognizes your bio-signature, and whoosh! Open." Liv walked to her desk and sat down on the counter. "Okay. We're connected, and our body language is empathy-positive. Talk to me."

Okay, you can do this. Karmi cleared her throat. "Well, I k-kind of happened to run across the Orso Knox file, and for some reason, I can't open it."

She was so busy trying not to try tripping over her words she didn't notice Liv's smile turning into a cold frown. "Well, that's because the Knox project is for my Knox team." She explained. "And only my Knox team."

"But I think I could help! I've been working on viral vectors to re-"

"I cherish your enthusiasm, Karmi." Liv cut her off. "It's exactly the kind of kick this company needs to drive change, but I need you and your kicky enthusiasm-"

She bopped Karmi on the nose. "To just keep doing exactly what you've been doing."

Karmi drooped, not wanting to meet Liv's smile. "Oh." Of course she wasn't allowed.

One of the drones flew up to her. "Cupcake?" Liv offered.

She didn't have the heart to take it. "No thanks, I'm trying to watch my diet." Karmi gave a low-hearted chuckle. "Ari already gives me too many sweets when she visits."

"Oh, how is Ari?" Liv raised an eyebrow. "I haven't seen her in awhile."

"She's been busy, I guess." Karmi shrugged. "Amnesia is still bringing her down, wish I could help."

"Sadly, there are some things we cannot help with." Liv had a dark look in her eyes. "Let me know how she's doing, okay?"

"Of course." Karmi sighed. "I'm gonna go now."

Liv gave her a polite wave as she left, wearing a smirk once she left.

Rachel checked her watch, it was noon. "You sure it's fine for us to idle in the lobby?" She turned to Hiro. She was aware of Liv's personal assistant giving her strange looks when the boys weren't looking in that direction. He probably thinks I'm spying for trade secrets. Rachel touched the spectacles on her face. Not wrong on that, but still.

"I didn't know you had a pair of glasses, Rach!" Fred was referring to her spectacles.

"Yeah um, they're for fashion." She quickly lied. "Mom and I went shopping and got a matching pair."

"Oh, cool!" His eyes lit up. "One time me and my mom got matching hats!" Fred took another bite of his taco, he brought his lunch with him.

"She hasn't replied." Hiro looked at his phone.

"Perhaps she is busy with her work." Baymax blinked, then turned to the elevator. "I detect Karmi arriving from that elevator."

"Perfect." But the shocked turned angry look on the biotech genius was not indeed perfect.

"You might wanna rethink that br-" Rachel caught herself before anyone noticed. He's so reckless, just like my brother. She liked that about Hiro, sure he had the same lack of common sense like Ari, but it mostly came from a place of concern.

She hoped that nothing would happen to the robotics genius like what happened to her brother though...

Her thoughts paused as Karmi stomped up to the group. "What are you losers doing here?"

Hiro placed his phone in his pocket. "Well, you were taking too long, so we thought we'd come see Liv."

"You can't just 'see' Liv. She's busy."

Baymax pointed to one of the staircases. "Liv Amara is right there." Where Liv was talking to one of the scientists, Chris was by her side. Karmi gasped and pushed the group away to her lab.

Once inside, Karmi turned to the "ringleader" of the group. "What are you trying to do to me, Hiro?" She demanded, then turned to Fred. "And Fred, no eating in my lab!"
"Aw, but it's lunchtime." He weakly protested.

Karmi growled and shoved the taco back into the Yaki Taco bag. "You could get crumbs everywhere or digest chemicals you idiot!"

"Karmi." Hiro stated, but it wasn't harsh. She did have a point, it was dangerous to eat in a lab due to the threat of contamination.

Rachel cleared her throat. "Did you find out any information on Orso Knox, either from your own search, or from Liv? But I doubt the latter, she's not exactly honest."

To her surprise, Karmi responded a little rudely due to being wound up at that moment. "A bio amateur like you wouldn't get it, you're not exactly a mind reader here!" She then flipped her ponytail and went typing away on the computer.

She could only blink, her face scrunching up. "Maybe don't insult Liv in front of her." Fred whispered.

"What? She should be aware of her idol's flaws since she's her 'bff.'" Rachel gestured with air-quotes.

"Please allow me to help." Baymax addressed Karmi. "I have a complete library of-"

"She's bluffing, Baymax." Hiro walked up to the computer, cracking his knuckles.

Karmi paused. "What are you doing?"

"Checking out the Knox file." He clicked it, but it buzzed.

"Oh, yeah? Well, it's locked. Good luck accessing it."

"Encrypted file? I don't need luck." Hiro clicked a few buttons, and when he clicked the file again, it opened. "Ha! Who's the amateur now?"

"I feel like this is illegal." Fred whispered to Rachel.

"It is to hack into files but this is important." She whispered back. "You didn't hear it from me."
"Got it."

"You can't just-" Karmi paused, realizing Hiro had no stop buttons. "Uch, how did you do that?"

He grinned. "Part of my natural talent. And my cousin taught me a few tricks, want me to give you some pointers?"

"Maybe another day." She replied.

"Hiro." Rachel spoke up. "Where's Knox?"

"Let's see..." He poked around. "Looks like they're keeping him in a high-security lab in..." Hiro whistled. "Wow. Sub-level nine."

She flinched. Just like what happened with Lance- no, don't think about him. Rachel brushed it off.

Fred's dramatic gasp caught her attention. "That's the most mysterious sub-level there is." He stated. "Unless there's a sub-level ten. is there a sub-level ten?"

"Normally not but I think-"

"Wait, stop. Go back." Karmi interrupted the scruffy brunette as she clicked one of the reports on Knox's status.

"It would appear Orso Knox is experiencing..."

"An over-expression of various mutated gene sequences." Karmi and Baymax said in unison. Rachel started getting puzzled when they threw a bunch of biotech terms.

"Maybe someone else jump in now." Fred blinked.

Hiro was the one who jumped. "So, what I'm hearing is that you can fix him!"

"Well, yeah." Karmi turned to him. "But I am not risking my internship."

"You haven't cured him in two months, If you know how then maybe Liv should put you on the team!" Rachel exclaimed, a little too angry. "Don't be such a coward!"

Karmi narrowed her eyes. "I'm not going to disobey her orders."

"So you're a coward-"

"Rachel!" Hiro snapped. "Not, helping!" She clamped her mouth. He then turned to his friend. "Karmi, please. Someone has to help." His voice was soft, pleading. He knew Karmi was a good person, no matter how annoying she got.

Why did you have to use those words... Karmi groaned, but she knew she didn't have the heart to stand and do nothing. "Fine. But how do we even get down there? I don't have access."

"That's not gonna be a problem." Hiro cracked his knuckles again.

True to his word, Hiro was able to get them to sub-level nine. The first thing they saw when entering the level was the darkness. Rachel could hear the faint hum of machinery and gurgling.

"See? Not a problem." Hiro placed the circuit board back. They walked into the lab, the lights reacted to their movements.

Rachel felt queasy seeing organs encased in water storage containers. "Ah!" The robotics teen genius yelped at seeing hearts still pumping in their glass tombs.

Fred turned to one of the containers, a stalk of a dozen eyes stared at him. "Yup. Just lost my appetite." He placed the taco in the bag.

"Same." Rachel added, she felt creeped out as the eyes stared at her. What the heck is Liv doing down here? "Is your boss trying to take notes from the mad doctor in Frankengroom?"

"Hey!" Karmi bristled in offense. "For your information, some of my co-workers have worked down here and this is just for storage." Mikan had been one of said co-workers, and she described the sub-level as "dark, but only in appearance," but as they explored, it was obvious that very few people had been down here as of late.

"When's the last time someone was around here?" Hiro questioned as he looked at a computer that had an article about the meteor shower above Muihara Woods a few years back. "Huh, I guess Liv likes keeping tabs on any potential disasters."

"Oh, yeah. Forgot that Muihara almost set aflame during that shower." Rachel poked her head over his shoulder to skim said article. "This was way before Sycorax was founded though, why would Liv have this?"

Karmi shrugged, she was looking at a computer that had some research about the properties of electric eels. "Liv obviously wants to be aware of the city's history so she knows how to help it."

"Whatever helps you sleep at night." Rachel rolled her eyes.

Their ears perked up at the sound of growling, Hiro gasped at a figure in the dark, hunched down on all fours.

"Um..." He took a step back as blue eyes glared at him.

Out of the shadows, Knox leaped!

Karmi held her hands over her head, Fred jumped into Baymax's arms, and Rachel instinctively clinged onto Hiro.

But then the barrier holding Knox in his cell kept him at bay. He growled then snorted, returning to his meal. "Do not worry, the holographic barrier is keeping Orso Knox contained in the cell." Baymax told them.

"Fascinating." Karmi stated, she walked over to the computer, and got to work running trials.

Rachel stopped clinging to Hiro. "Sorry, I panicked."

"It's fine." He told her. "That was scary."

Fred decided to be the brave one and walk up to the monster's cage. "Excuse me, Mr. Knox? It's me. Fred. Of the San Fransokyo Fredericksons."

Knox gave him a look and continued eating. "Guess he's not in the mood for conversation." Rachel commented. "At least he didn't try biting your head off." She decided to try walking up to the cage. "Orso? Remember my mom, Sarah Rosemary?"

Knox seemed to turn when she mentioned her mom, he gave her a look, as if he was trying to see the similarities between the two. Then, he gave a growl and continued eating. "Gee, what a socialite."

"Wait." Hiro froze. "Couldn't he talk before?"

"The longer he spends like this, the less human he gets."

The group turned around to see Liv behind them, walking out of the shadows. "He's been sub-verbal for weeks now." One of them noticed that Knox began growling and his eyes flared with anger at the sight of Liv. "Now, a question for all of you. What are you doing down here?"

Karmi jumped away from the computer. "I can explain!"

But the woman didn't want answers, she walked up to Karmi, her heels clacking on the cold floor. "Karmi." Her voice was looking down on her. "I thought you were a value adder, not a rule breaker."

Karmi bowed her head down. "I-"

"This is my disappointed face." Liv gestured to her frown. Rachel felt her blood boil, she nudged Hiro and he quickly ran to defend the biotech genius.

"It's not Karmi's fault, I made her-"

He was cut off. "Hi. I'm talking to Karmi." She ignored him. "I'm afraid I'm gonna have to-"

Beep!

The computer Karmi was working on beeped, the trial was a success, from what Rachel could gather. "You did all this? Just now?" Liv walked to the computer.

Karmi sighed. "Yes. And I'm so sorry."

Her expression was unreadable as she stared at the results. "This is… impressive."

"It is?" Karmi and Hiro questioned.

"I have a meeting so let's close the loop on this." Liv turned her attention back to them. "Karmi, keep working, with permission this time."

"Wait, I'm not fired?" She was quizzical.

The CEO laughed. "I can overlook the breaking of a rule now and then. I'm the boss." She then grabbed Fred's hand. "Mr. Frederickson, walk with me."

"Uh… sure?" Fred was confused but went along with it.

"I trust you can show yourself out." The jab was pointed to Hiro and Rachel, the latter giving her the stink-eye.

"Yep. I can do that." Hiro gave a thumbs up.

"Great." She turned back to Fred as they walked to the elevator. "How's your mother? I haven't had a chance to follow up with her after our investment discussion." Liv gave the group one more glance as the elevator closed, heading back to the brighter side of Sycorax.

"I did not like how she talked to you." Rachel blurted. "That was a red flag."

"Yeah, it was my fault you got in trouble." Hiro turned to Karmi. "I'm sorry."

"That's not the point I was trying to make-"

"Wait." Karmi narrowed her eyes at Hiro. "You're sorry?"

Hiro gave a slow nod. "Yeah, we could've just gone here on our own, and you could make the cure and we could've brought it to Knox."

"Oh, I uh…" Karmi paused, a little frozen from shock. As if she didn't expect any sort of apology. "Just… get out before something else happens." She started to nudge Hiro and Baymax to the elevator.

"Aww, didn't know you cared so much, Karmi."

"Uhhhg!" And the banter was back, Rachel giggled. But she was going to have to go over the footage she collected.

"Goodbye." Baymax waved as he was being nudged.

The group was so occupied with what happened, they didn't notice the security gate to Knox's cell being deactivated.

BEEP-BEEP-BEEP

Then the alarms started blaring. Hiro and Karmi turned, seeing the green colors of the sub-level turn red with fear.

"Oh, no." Baymax stated, and Rachel noticed Fred had given the healthcare companion his Yaki Taco bag. She was tempted to shove whatever was left down her throat due to stress.

"Do, not 'oh, no.'" Karmi poked Baymax. "I don't want to hear any 'oh, no-ing' from you."

"Uh, Karmi?" She ran to Hiro, who pointed to Knox's cell.

It was empty.

"Oh, no." She gasped.

There was a figure running circles. "Uh…" Hiro glanced left from right, he pulled Karmi closer protectively. "Baymax. Flashlight." He whispered to the healthcare companion.

Baymax's hand lit up as it illuminated the lab, Hiro used his phone as a flashlight too. "Y'know, I doubt Knox is going to hurt us." Rachel pointed out. "Human flesh has too many bones for him to enjoy the taste, unless he likes eating crunchy meat."

Karmi gave her a look of disgust. "Please never speak again."

"What?" She shrugged.

"Karms is right, that's really disgusting." Hiro nodded.

"Did you just call me, 'Karms?'" The biotech genius shot him a confused look. "Really? You're going to nickname me now while we're in a life-threatening situation Genius Boy."

"You're the one who told me that your siblings called you 'Karms.'' He argued back.

"I didn't expect you to call me that!"

"You gave me a nickname, why can't I give you one back!

"Because that's not how it works Hiro!"

"Oh, so we're back to regular names when you say so, huh?"

"Guys-"

"Shut up!" They both snapped at Rachel.

She merely pointed behind them. "I'd suggest running."

They turned, and saw Knox looming above them, drool dripping from his fangs.

Both teens held each other and screamed as Knox leaped, but he tackled Baymax for some reason, the robot dropped the bag. Then he turned at them.

"Run!" Hiro grabbed Karmi as she was still screaming and they ran. Rachel gave Knox a look before joining them in their fleeing. Knox's paw had crushed Hiro's dropped phone.

"You have to buy a new phone!" She told him.

"Really not my top priority right now!" He paused, seeing Knox starting to tear through the Yaki Taco bag. But Karmi pushed him to keep running down one of the corridors.

They heard Knox's ear-splitting shriek as they fled for their lives.

"I have fallen. And I cannot get up." Poor Baymax was stuck on the ground like a turtle with its shell flipped over, his arms and legs kicking up.

As Hiro and Karmi ran, the former tripped as he tried to get the robot back on his feet, Karmi and Rachel helped him get Baymax up. "Thank you." Rachel then started pushing the robot since there was no way he could run, Hiro helped her out,

"This way!"

"Over here." Karmi ran to one of the labs, they shoved Baymax inside as the growling got louder. They quickly hunched on the ground. Overhead, Rachel could see Knox by the glass, he snorted, then ran off. Hiro and Karmi then gave sighs of relief.

"That was close." Rachel gasped. Her heart was pounding out of her chest, she tried keeping her face neutral but she was so scared-

"What are you doing?" Karmi glanced at Hiro, he ran to one of the tablets in the lab and started clicking stuff.

"I can override a containment protocol." He answered.

"You can't!"

"Thanks for the vote of confidence."

"No, I mean, the protocol is there for a reason." Karmi protested. "If Knox got out, it'd be bad."

"Even Big Hero 6 had trouble wrangling him." Rachel added. "The only reason he was caught was because Karmi managed to sedate him."

"Rachel and Karmi are correct." Baymax stated. "Mr. Knox has a bite-"

"One-hundred times of that of a human." Hiro sarcastically mumbled. "Right. Because, monster!"

"Look, that monster used to be a person." Karmi explained. "So the only way out of this is to turn him back into one." Rachel hummed in agreement.

"No offense, Karmi, but I don't think we have time for you to show off your 'mad bio skills.'" Hiro snapped at her.

"Just because you say 'no offense,' doesn't mean you weren't way offensive, you know." Karmi snapped back.

"Teenagers." Rachel muttered to Baymax.

"You are also a teenager." He pointed out.

"Look, if we trap him in his cell we're good to go, right?" Hiro suggested.

"You want us to go back out there without a cure?" Karmi narrowed her eyes. "Are you crazy?!"

"I'm not crazy!" He pointed to her. "You and Rachel are staying put. Baymax and I will go out."

She tried grabbing for him but he quickly exited, tugging the robot along. "Uch." Karmi then grabbed a few materials from the lab and began working. "As if I'd sit here and wait."

Rachel watched her light up a burner with a careful eye. She tried not to worry about Hiro, he seemed to know how to handle himself in these situations. Then again… so do I.

"I'm sorry for calling you a coward." Rachel told Karmi. "You were brave at the gala."

"So were you." She replied. "I probably wouldn't have done anything if you didn't try and attack Knox, you're also really collected during this."

"Actually I'm hiding my internal fear with humor because it could be what kills me but sure." Rachel nervously giggled. "Man, I'm such a coward."

"No, you're not." Karmi glared. If only she knew. "This is a stressful situation, of course you'd be snappy."

She turned to the biotech genius. "Can I tell you a secret?" When Karmi nodded, she took a deep breath. "I'm uncomfortable with this place, because it reminds me what happened to Katie."

"Katie?" The biotech genius frowned. "I didn't know something happened to her."

"Really?" Rachel gave her a look. "Talking blue cat and you never questioned why she existed?"

"I mean… I suspected it was a genetic mutation." Karmi shrugged. "I wasn't curious enough that I poked into details."

She gave a sigh. "To make a long story short, there was this scientist named Lancer who did genetic experiments on animals, including Katie."

Karmi gave a horrified gasp. "That's horrible!"

"Yeah." Rachel nodded. "Dad busted him and got him arrested, but then he escaped so that keeps me up at night." Along with other things. "Katie was one of the few that survived, but he considered her a failed experiment since he didn't get the result he wanted."

Rachel's gaze darkened. "Really scummy scientist, huh? So Dad adopted Katie and she's my best friend now. But she was kept in his version of 'sub-level nine' so I'm having flashbacks. End of story."

Karmi gave her a sympathetic frown. "That would explain why you'd be acting snappy, that must've been awful seeing that happen to a loved one."
"Mhmm. Are you done with that cure?"

"Almost." Karmi did a few more things and then she grabbed the kit. "Okay, let's hope Hiro and Baymax caught Knox by now."

Then there was the sound of crashing, and screaming. "Probably not." Rachel's eyes widened.

"Hiro!" Karmi gasped, running out of the lab.

"Come back, it's not safe!" They ran back to the main level where Knox was held, there was no sign of the beast. But Karmi gasped in horror seeing the broken walls, Baymax was lying on the ground, one of his eyes glitching.

But what horrified her most of all was not only there was no sign of Knox...

There was no sign of Hiro either.

AN: Ohhh I had FUN with this one. Rip to Hiro XD, he cannot win for this chapter. And poor Karmi too! It was not fun writing "Liv" messing with her, but it was fun writing her banter with Hiro.

And of course Rachel was added into the mix! If she wasn't believing Katie's suspicions about Sycorax, she might right now, especially after witnessing "Liv's" treatment of Karms.

Sidenote, Lancer isn't going to show up (yet), but let's just say that he and "Liv" would probably get along, that's what kind of person he is btw. He'll be fun to write when I get to his official debut.

I had fun writing the kids investigating sub level 9, may contain foreshadowing.

Man I just realized that Rachel was the Karmiro third wheel for this chapter, Ari's gonna want her job back next episo- oh wait.

QOTW: Which monster of the week for this season scared you the most? (and don't say Karmi, that scene in the finale scared all of us)
