A grin worked its way onto his face as the familiar sight of the dojo came into view. He'd been gone for far too long.

His eyes wandered across the dojo yard as he searched for the ones who lived there. Mostly for her, though. He ached to see her smile again. He knew she had not been happy at the fact that he'd had to leave the way he did-he had seen it in her eyes-but he was certain that she would welcome him with her smile. That was just the way she was.

Suddenly, a flash of red caught his eye. His gaze settled upon a head of red hair and its tiny owner. A young boy stared back at him with great interest.

As the child's eyes-blue eyes, just like hers- regarded him with a curiosity and distrust normally reserved for strangers, a sinking feeling manifested itself in his chest. He knew that he should have expected this, had known it was coming, but yet…Maybe, just maybe, if I hadn't left…

"Kaasan!" The child's yell shook him from his morose thoughts. And then she appeared. His eyes drank in the sight of the girl-no, woman-in front of him. The skinny figure of the teenager he had met so long ago had filled out nicely. The wild fire in her eyes burned no less intensely, but had been tempered by maturity. However, the smile that replaced her initial expression of shock was every bit as warm as it had always been.

For a few moments he could only stare at her. She raised an eyebrow, amused, and then broke the silence.

"Welcome back, Sanosuke."

Despite the heaviness that had settled in his heart, he could not help but respond to her smile with a grin of his own. "It's good to be back, Jou-chan."
