Joe's Diner, a diner well-known for their nostalgic food and strange customers. Currently, Hiro was sitting across from Megan as they waited for their food. "So, Megan." Hiro began. "I didn't get this answer last time, but how long have you been in San Fransokyo?"
"We moved here a little while after the star, about a week before the school semester began." She explained. "Dad and I moved around due to his job, but this time he says we'll be staying for good. I'd like to believe him, it sucks having to leave behind friends in every state."
"Ouch." He winced. "I've never been outside the city by car and all my friends live here, I do have some cousins in New York. We visited them during my semester break."
"You go to SFIT, right?" Megan asked him. "Ari mentioned that."
"Is that a problem?" Hiro was hesitant.
"No, of course not. It's awesome you get to go straight to college!" She chuckled. "High school may not be as awful in Mean Girls but it still sucks."
"At least you're going to a good school. Bridgeton is ten times better than Whitepine." Hiro told her. "Now that was like Mean Girls."
"Yikes."
"You said it!"
A waitress came back with a large plate of fries, Megan drooled at seeing the platter. Once the server left, she started to dig in.
Hiro grinned as he took a few fries. "You really like the fries here, don't you?"
"Yeah, they're so good!" Megan nodded. "I really don't want to have to move because then I wouldn't get to eat them anymore."
"That's a good reason to stay around, most people stay because of the Noodle Burgers."
"Huh." She chuckled. "I'd like to go often, but my dad is really overprotective, he's paranoid when I go out on my own."
He raised an eyebrow. "How so?"
"It was like a year ago, so I got home from foreign language club. Or was it photography?" Megan hummed. "Doesn't matter. The point is, I was only seven minutes late but my dad already had the entire police force looking for me."
"Oh, wow."
"Anyway." She took two fries. "I've told you way too much about me. Your turn." As she started munching the fries down, Hiro was hesitant.
"Oh. I… go to SFIT."
"I know that. I mean what do you do for fun?"
"I don't have much free time, really." He confessed. "When I'm not in school or doing school work, I'm busy saving… money!" Hiro laughed at the slip. "I have an internship."
Megan frowned as he slurped the soda down. "Hiro, we're going to have to change this all work, no play lifestyle. It's not healthy." She told him. "How about a movie?
He would've replied were it not for him seeing a text on his phone from Gogo. She has the worst timing.
Gogo: MEET SFIT
Gogo: NOW!
Hiro sighed. "Sorry. I gotta go." He explained. "School stuff."
"On Saturday?"
"Yeah. It's a study group!" Hiro chuckled nervously. "Six of us. It's a big study group."
"I'll venture to say, we haven't seen the last of these dancing divas."
Gogo paused the screen, and zoomed in on the clip of High Voltage robbing a vault. "See? No orb." She pointed out.
"Huh." Wasabi frowned. "How are they doing that?"
The gang was in the robotics lab, all huddled up. Hiro was watching the report on a chair, Ari was curled next to him, frowning as she watched the news.
"She said they were gonna stop…" Ari mumbled. "I'm gonna have words with her."
"No confronting High Voltage." Fred chided the girl. "You promised."
"Fine." But she'd definitely be having words if her brother and friends caught them!
"That electricity has to be coming from somewhere." Honey Lemon commented.
"Krei-Tech?" Ari asked.
"No, we checked." Hiro told her.
Gogo continued to play the report. "In other news, still no developments of the disappearance of San Fransokyo Aquarium's beloved electric eels-"
"Uch." His sister gagged. "Eels."
"AC and DC."
"Wait, wait, wait!" Fred exclaimed. "Did you just hear that? Electric eels?"
"Yeah. What about them?" Gogo raised an eyebrow. Fred placed his gummy bunny bowl on the couch and stood up.
"Maybe there's a connection. High Voltage's new power, it's just like an electric eel."
Hiro heard Ari growl in anger at the suggestion. "Come on, seriously?" He tried to discourage Fred.
"Seriously!" Fred grabbed the healthcare companion. "Baymax, science me."
"Electric eels have the ability to generate electricity to-"
"Science! Settled!" He chuckled. "High Voltage is part eel!"
"What the heck Fred?!" Ari jumped out of her chair, accidentally knocking poor Hiro over. "Why would you say that?! You know how I feel about eels!"
"I'm just saying, it's a possibility!" Fred argued. "The eels go missing, then High Voltage break out and they can generate electricity-"
"Ewww!" She gagged. "I'm disgusted at the thought, there is no way Barb or Juniper would ever turn part eel on purpose!"
"What she said." Gogo pointed to her.
"Ariel, please calm down." Honey Lemon placed a comforting hand. "Freddie's just trying to help, he didn't mean to offend you."
She pouted, and sat down.
"They've gotta be using a new source of power." Hiro explained, getting up back on his chair.
"Eels..." Fred whispered, grabbing the bowl from Hiro's hands. "Gum bun?" He offered Honey Lemon.
"Oh, bunnies! So cute!" She squealed, grabbing one. "I… I can't bring myself to eat one." She stared at the treat, an idea forming in her head.
"Hmm. Inspiration!"
Later that night...
The alleyway was dark, save for purple electricity bouncing off of pale skin. "Juniper." Barb chided. "Careful with that."
"Sorry Mama." She huffed. "I'm just… frustrated."
Barb raised an eyebrow. "Because of that woman?"
"No because of the weather- yes because of that woman!" Juniper snapped, instantly regretting it when seeing her mama flinch. "I hate her." She sniffled. "I don't wanna do crime anymore."
Barb instantly pulled her into a hug. "I know, Juni."
"She threatened you, she threatened me."
"I know, it's okay now, baby." She felt her mama gently stroke her hair, it did little to comfort her.
"It also hurt when…" She rubbed her neck. "Nevermind."
Instantly, Barb placed her hand on her shoulders and gave her a very concerned look. "Sweetie, what hurts?"
Juniper sweatdropped. "Um, when that assistant guy chipped me, it really hurts, still does." Her hands shot up as small bolts of electricity simmered from Barb's hands. "Not that I'm in agonizing pain or anything right now! But it just stings a little, y'know?"
"If you say so." Barb still looked concerned, but let it be. "Wanna know the good news?"
"Good news?" She blinked. What good news?
"We're law-abiding citizens, now, Juni!"
Oh… Juniper felt her eyes water again, it had sucked being forced to do that lady's bidding, but it was over. They could try to be better now. She looked across the street, where two people were buying tickets to a movie. "Maybe… maybe we can go to the movies and not rob them, for once." She wiped a tear away. "Just like normal people do!" Like she used to do, back during much, much happier times.
"Maybe."
She squealed and hugged her mother. "Oh, Mama, I'm so happy!"
Gurgle.
"And hungry." Juniper blushed red, placing a hand to her tummy.
"Huh." Her mother did the same gesture as another gurgle was heard. "Me too." In all the rush to "get the stupid money over with," they must've neglected to eat.
But it felt… ravenous, like there was a drive to devour and consume-
She blinked. Don't be so dramatic June. "And I'm kind of craving…"
"Seafood!" She and Barb said at the same time. Conveniently, a seafood truck drove past them.
"Hmm…"
"Okay, one last crime." Her mother stared at the truck. "Then, we're officially retired!"
Ferns and Nerds group chat:
Hiro Hamada: Hey Ari y'know how there's a dance at your school this weekend?
TheLittleMermaid: Yes? Why do you ask?
Hiro Hamada: Well I'm tagging along with Megan
Sara Ferns: WAIT YOU'RE GOING ON A DATE?!
Hiro Hamada: IT'S NOT A DATE!
Sienna Kline: I can smell the shipper energy
TheLittleMermaid: They're just friends. Also yay I get to spend my first school dance with my brother!
Hiro Hamada: It's my first school dance too
David 19: This is so wholesome omg
Sara Ferns: I need details afterwords you two!
TheLittleMermaid: Omg why. It's just a school dance, nothing too juicy is gonna happen
Mikan Ferns: That's what they all say
"Can you tell us what happened?" Gogo asked the poor truck driver. She and Fred were on night patrol with Baymax, and had noticed the truck driver parked on the side of the street, his cargo empty, the only remains were half-eaten fish.
"Right, so I was doing my job, when suddenly the truck stopped." The driver explained, Fred started taking notes. "I heard the back open up and when I checked it out, I saw two people trying to steal the fish! It was the mother-daughter duo, what are they called?"
"High Voltage." Gogo clenched her teeth. What are they up to now?
"Oh, right. And they were eating the fish… whole."
"Whole, you say?" Fred walked up to the driver.
"Whole."
"Mm-hmm. Interesting." He scribbled something down.
"Red Panda." Gogo gestured to Baymax. "Can you scan for High Voltage?"
"Scanning now." He beeped, scanning the city. "I am unable to locate High Voltage."
"Scan jammer?" She raised an eyebrow.
"I am not detecting any scan interference."
Fred flickered in front of her. "Which brings us back to the eel theory!"
"Do we have to?"
"Yes! Did you hear what the man said? They were eating fish!"
"So?"
"Whole!" The driver exclaimed.
"I know." She snapped. "But there has to be a less stupid explanation. Right?"
"I'm liking the eel theory."
"And I like you." Fred placed a hand around the driver's shoulder.
"Do you really have to leave early?" Hiro raised an eyebrow, he got back from school to get ready for the dance, only to find out Ari was already dressed and ready to go.
"Yeah!" She nodded, wearing the lovely blue dress she first wore at the bro-tillion. "I'm not waiting for Megan to get here."
"Ari is experiencing a lack of patience." Baymax pointed out.
"No kidding." He mumbled. "Hey, sis?"
"Yeah?"
"How are you liking school so far? Do you wish you went to regular school back when you were little?"
"I mean…" she gestured. "A little, I always asked my Mom why I couldn't go to school. She said school was for bad people and that I was better safe at home, where she and Dad could keep me protected."
"Oh." He wasn't going to address that issue for now, but it left him and Baymax very concerned. "I was talking to Honey Lemon and Wasabi and… I just think about what I missed out on growing up. If I was a normal kid."
"Hiro." Ari groaned. "You wouldn't be Hiro if you were 'normal,' everyone has a different experience."
"You're right." He nodded. "Sides, hanging with Megan kind of gives me a taste of normalcy, since there's all this superhero stuff in our lives."
"Don't remind me." She started to walk downstairs. "See you soon!"
"See you soon, Ari." Hiro waved. "Make sure you let Aunt Cass take a few pictures, or else she'll get upset!"
"Don't worry, I will!"
The dance was at the school gymnasium, when Ari entered. She was blasted with pop, loud noises, and chattering students.
"Hey, Ari!" Janice greeted her. "Nice to see you!"
Ari just gave her a look. "What?"
"Nice to see you!" She put more volume in her voice. "Yeah, it's a little loud, I'd suggest stepping out for a bit."
"I guess." Ari shrugged. "Might as well get a drink, I'm a little thirsty."
"We have lots of punch, and apple juice."
"I'm just gonna go to the water fountain." Ari looked outside the gym. "Save me a seat, will you?"
"Sure thing!" Janice flashed her a thumbs up, and she stepped out to clear her senses.
"Are all dances that noisy?" Ari muttered to herself, she walked until getting to the water fountain. "It's at least not as noisy as the gala got." Ari then turned on the fountain, and started taking refreshing sips of water.
Until a pair of arms suddenly lifted her up and grabbed her into a hug.
As she spat out water from the surprise, the intruder spoke. "Oh my god Ari!" Juniper's soothing voice that made her heart fuzzy and warm cocoa brown eyes stared at her. "I didn't expect to run into you here!"
"June?!" She just exclaimed.
"Yeah, that's me." Juniper giggled. "I'm so glad you're doing okay!" She was wearing a pink and black dress that was similar to her High Voltage attire, but still different enough that it'd be hard to recognize her at first glance.
Ari on one hand, was very tempted to just snap, considering the recent crime sprees her friend had been doing. But on the other hand, she was just so, so lost in that warming gaze that she just couldn't.
Besides, when was the last time they could hug without the awkwardness of a guard staring at them?
"I go to school here, remember?" Ari's voice felt funny on her tongue. "Did you come to visit?" You picked the worst time but oh god I missed talking to you-
"I'd love to say 'yes' but nah." She chuckled, still hugging Ari a little too tight. "I heard from a few passing kids that there was a school dance at Bridgeton aka your school, so I managed to convince Mama-"
"Barb is here too?"
"Yup! I haven't really been to a regular dance ever." Juniper told her.
"Me neither." Ari told her, she then noticed how shaky her friend's grip was. "Umm, are you okay?" I am a little concerned.
Juniper just sniffled and hugged her tighter. "I'm sorry Ari! I told you I didn't want to do crime anymore and I mean it! The recent stuff was because Mama and I were forced too!"
"What?" Ari gasped. "Who forced you?"
"...I can't tell you." Juniper frowned. "Please believe me on this." Her grip tightened a little bit more, as if afraid Ari would slip and shatter like glass.
She was shocked and how desperate Juniper sounded, it wasn't like her at all. "Okay." Ari told her. "I believe you."
Juniper's eyes just got more watery. "Thank you, thank you, thank you Ari!"
"That's great but please put me down June." She wheezed. "You're hugging me a little too tight."
"Oh." Her friend realized she was squeezing Ari. "Sorry!" She started to lower her back to the ground.
She sighed. "Finally, I like you June but also I like the ground!" Then Ari noticed something in her friend's eyes. "Um, are you crying?"
Juniper instantly shook her head. "Nope! Not crying, probably allergies." She wiped her eyes. "I'm really glad to see you though."
"Me too." Ari smiled. It was something of a dream come true to her, having Juniper at the dance. "So uh… do you wanna be my date at the dance?"
"Are you asking me out?"
She blushed. "N-Not that way! I mean as friends!"
"Oh." Juniper nervously chuckled. "I'd love to spend the dance with you."
Ari couldn't help the squeal that came out of her throat. "Yay!" And hugged Juniper again. "By the way, why does your breath smell a little fishy?"
"Umm… no reason?"
Her friend started dragging Ari to one of the nearby tables, to where a familiar woman was. "Mama, look!" Juniper exclaimed. "I found Ari!"
"Um, hi Barb." Ari waved. "Wow, your dress is pretty."
"Thank you, dear." Barb was wearing a dress similar to Juniper with more shades of pink than purple, Ari noticed they both were wearing the same type of shoes and had blue bands around their wrists. The older woman gave her a warm smile and a small hug. "So glad you're safe."
"Why wouldn't I be?" She questioned, then flinched as loud pop music came on. "Jeez, can they turn down the volume?"
"I happen to like this song!" Juniper giggled. "Hey, wanna dance?"
Ari felt her heart skyrocket at the idea. "I'd love to woah-" She nearly tripped as Juniper started spinning her around, but she didn't mind. As the goofy pop song got to the chorus, Juniper was leading her through the wild dance, and like their first meeting, Ari didn't mind and just followed her lead.
"Y'know, you're getting pretty good at dancing." Juniper hummed with amusement. "Have you been practicing?"
"Well, I've had plenty of time to." Ari smiled back at her. "But I'm nowhere near your level."
"Aww don't say that! Maybe I could give you some lessons?"
"That'd be wonderful." She felt like everything was right in the world. But then her eyes flashed with fear as she saw a pair of eyes staring at her with concern.
Her brother's brown eyes.
"Oh, no." Hiro gasped, he was having such a good time at the dance with Megan. She was wearing a blue dress and a similar blue hairpin and gold necklace, which looked really nice since all he wore was his only fancy suit.
But then he saw behind Megan was Ari, but what scared him was seeing High Voltage and Juniper spinning his sister around. He quickly shot a text in the superhero chat.
Captain Cutie: HIGH VOLTAGE AT DANCE. COME QUICK!
"You okay?" Megan asked him, not realizing how much danger she and the rest of the students were in!
"Yeah." Hiro nervously chuckled, putting the phone away and trying not to show how panicked he was.
"A-All good."
AN: Hiro what did you expect, it isn't a HOF chapter without Ari running into her crush! And yeah I had to end on the dance, so that next ep will be eel time, and Ari has the front row seats!
Also I skipped the fish truck scene because that's one of the scariest COM scenes I didn't want to relive it n.n;
But on a sidenote, this chapter is just quick set-up for the main act, poor Hiro and Ari, they cannot catch a break, they just wanted a perfectly normal school dance.
At the time of posting this chapter is Pride Month, so before I end it here, happy pride my guys! Wish I had a happier episode this month but dw, we'll be getting to the Roommates ep sooner than you think!
QOTW: What was the funniest thing that happened at your school dance?
