Normally in the Ferns household, Steven was the first one to leave. He worked early mornings to mid-afternoon, sometimes evening if he was getting good overtime.
But on the rare vacation days, he was a little surprised to wake up seeing his son restrain his daughter from exiting out of the house with a… frying pan? And his poor niece was by the kitchen eating ice cream from the carton, oh boy.
"Kids!" He cupped his hands to his mouth, they all froze. "First of all, where is Sally?"
"She went to school." Sara sniffled. "Dunno why, she wanted to talk to Granville about something."
"Something about school internships." Mikan shrugged. "Hiro, Karmi, and I aren't the only SFIT students working at a company. My friend Jarmi has an internship at uh… I think at one of the SecuriTech buildings."
"Was it the one my mother robbed?" David questioned, he hadn't mentioned Momakase like that without tearing up, which meant he was starting to recover. That's good. Steven thought, he just hoped Sara would recover from whatever is ailing her.
"Probably." Sara shrugged. "Mika, put the frying pan down."
Mikan pouted. "But I need to whack Wasabi for breaking your heart!" Oh dear.
"Is this boy trouble?" Steven questioned.
"Yes." Three voices chorused, he did not want to deal with this.
But... he was their dad/uncle, even if romance drama drove him nuts, he'd suffer for his children.
"It's my fault he finds stupid perfect Chris better than me." Sara dug more into her ice cream. "I didn't tell him how I feel because I'm a dumb cowardly chicken who's gonna never get a partner for the rest of her dumb life."
Steven walked up to her. "Honey no, it's not your fault." He told her. "Don't beat yourself up because it didn't work out, you'll find the one perfect for you. Heck, a lot of my coworkers like Carl are happier not having a romantic partner, there's more to life than settling down and having a family."
"You did that with Auntie." Sara sniffled, leaning on his shoulder as he calmly stroked her hair. David and Mikan watched awkwardly.
"Yeah, but we were friends for a while before marrying." Steven chuckled. "It was a funny wedding B... the maid of honor called me a cheapskate for that."
"When did you guys get married?" David questioned.
Steven chuckled. "Little after college, it took us a while to fall in love. My best friend practically had to push us into a closet to get us together, that's why we made her the maid of honor."
All three kids snickered. "Sounds like a smart woman." Mikan grinned.
"You can say that again." Steven chuckled. "I had my best friend from college help me out, she and I saw some weird stuff. Like this one time a senior tried taking over campus with a robot army and the military got involved."
Sara snorted. "You're pulling our legs Uncle!"
"Yeah, and I thought my Pops was a good liar." Mikan added. "Make it more realistic, stop watching cartoons."
"I'm telling the truth!"
David huffed. "Suuuure." But then he looked to be in thought. "Can we meet this best friend?"
Something flickered in Steven's eyes, he looked down at the counter. "You did when you and Sara were young." He explained. "She has a little girl around Karmi's age, though not so little I guess. They live on the other side of the country so we couldn't visit as much."
"How come we stopped?" Sara raised an eyebrow. "I remember some bits like… the mom sounded like she was in a cowboy movie."
"Sara I think that's discrimination on accents." Mikan sarcastically stated. "How dare you, it's 2032."
"Mika oh my god, shut up!" She slapped her with an empty carton. "You suck!"
"It's making you feel better!"
Their dad continued looking away. "It got too expensive for flights, and she stopped contacting me, but then..." He pressed the bridge of his nose. "I don't wanna talk about it."
The kids exchanged frowns. "Did she try to… like I did?" Sara gestured to her scarred wrists, pointing to the deep ones near her hands.
"No-no-no." He shook his head, it was sad that the kids thought of that as the first thing, but they had been through a lot. "I'm not going into details, you kids got a lot on your plates with all the monster attacks going on."
David shrunk a little at the mention, Steven knew that feeling. "Watch some nice movies, it's not a school day so enjoy time off."
"Does it get better dealing with heartbreak?" Sara questioned.
David was the one who answered. "It does. I know my mother and I's relationship isn't a stable comparison, but at least you can have Wasabi in your life. He's a great dude, kind of an idiot for choosing my amazing sister over a pretty face-"
"Chris is so vain, he looks at himself through reflections." Mikan added. "Nicole even said that he talks to himself in the mirror, probably true though."
Sara rolled her eyes at her siblings. "I'd prefer if you guys stopped being mean to Wasabi, it's not his fault."
"Fineee…" Both of them chorused.
"One day you'll find this awesome boy, girl, or person who will love you, and maybe you'll have mini Sara's or not, but as long as you and your relationship is happy, then the journey there doesn't feel as hard." David smiled. "Let's go watch cartoons to cheer up now!"
"Okay!" The two ran to the couch and began picking out movies, Mikan rolled her eyes with amusement.
"I love them." Mikan chuckled. "Even when I first got here, they're kids."
"To be fair, you were thirteen when you came into our lives." Steven added. "Sally was shocked Bobby had a little one."
"Well, he plucked me from the streets." She shrugged. "Don't remember my blood folks, maybe they died, maybe they were poor and bitter and I ran away, who cares."
Steven raised an eyebrow. "You are doing okay, right?"
"Yeah, I have a therapy session today, and we'll be talking about how to be better at talking to people, something I need to grind more experience in." Mikan grinned. "But thanks for checking on me Dad."
"You're welcome sweetie." He loved his kids. "Let's go join your siblings in cartoon watching."
Hiro woke up to the sound of sniffling, at first he thought he was a young child again, when he'd sometimes wake up to Tadashi quietly grieving for their parents. But when he turned over to his brother's bed, he saw long messy brown hair, and a lot of paper on the bed.
He sighed, getting up. "Ari." Hiro slowly walked over to her, and saw the letter she was rereading, a few tear stains on the paper. "I thought Aunt Cass confiscated those."
"These are the ones she didn't." Ari sighed. "I'm sorry if I woke you up, I thought I was over her…" She placed a hand to her eye. "She didn't… she didn't care about me, why am I still crying about her then?"
Hiro quickly hugged her. "You don't know that!" He exclaimed. "You don't know if she used you, or if she really did care about you, don't assume the worst." Where did she even come up with a conclusion?
"But Liv said-" Oh. Her. He was starting to dislike Sycorax's CEO more and more.
"I don't care what she said!" Hiro snapped, then calmed seeing her frightened blue eyes. "Liv has never even interacted with Juniper, she doesn't know about the letters, she doesn't know about the whole dance, and she doesn't know everything."
He took a deep breath. "Ari you need to gather your own opinion of what happened yourself, neither me, Liv, or anyone else can tell you how to feel."
"I expected this feelings talk from Baymax." She mumbled.
"Well, I picked up a few things." He explained. "Stop reading those letters if they're gonna make you sad. It's okay to not be over it, you nearly lost your eye."
Ari looked back at him, tears in her eyes. "I know." She sniffled. "But she was gonna kill you… I didn't know Fred was invisible so I was-"
"It's okay." Hiro hugged her again, they were both crying now. "Even with a Phase 2 upgrade as Fred would put it, High Voltage isn't gonna kill any of us anytime soon."
She nodded, but then looked down again. "Did I say something wrong?" He frowned.
"She was gonna get better…"
"Ari?"
"She told me that she and Barb were gonna get better." Ari sniffled. "Why didn't she? If you tell someone you're going to get better, you do that… why?"
Hiro was confused that Ari was hung up on that. I mean, the mutations are probably why they were so vicious, so it should've been obvious. "We'll figure it out."
He gave her a light squeeze. "Stay in bed today, sis. It's the weekend so have a day off!" He smiled seeing a calico hop onto the bed and nuzzling his sister. "Mochi's even here to keep you company!"
Ari gave a light giggle. "Thanks, and what are you going to do today?"
"Internship and evening patrol." Hiro explained. "Krei wants me to look at some upgrades he wants for the Buddy Guards."
"Huh, sounds complicated."
"I know! And their circuits are still wonky so you have to be careful not to get them aggro. It's the worst!"
"They're still buggy?"
"Yeah!" He threw his arms in the air. "Speaking of that trainwreck, I better get going before Krei has me do any coffee runs to boot."
Ari sighed. "I feel bad for Steven, and I guess Judy, she looked tired."
"Yeah, if it weren't for her, Krei-Tech would be run to the ground." Hiro sighed. "Bye sis, have fun in your blanket fort and remember…"
She groaned. "Don't feed yourself with ice cream and junk all day and tell Aunt Cass when you want food." He was not going to repeat the late-night ice cream incident.
"Great! Bye!" As he left, Ari looked over to Mochi.
"Is it just me, or is Hiro turning into such a mom lately?"
"Mrow." Mochi glared.
"I mean, he's a buzzkill, but he is making sure I don't spiral downwards into misery and…" He doesn't lie when he says he'll get better Mom and Dad said they were gonna get better why- "He's cool." She hated it when getting those memory flashes.
"Meow!" Mochi beamed at her, oblivious to the dark clouds in her head.
Later that evening…
In the shared apartment of Honey Lemon and Gogo, both of them were getting ready for their date. "You don't have to dress up fancy, Honey." Gogo was already ready to go, but Honey Lemon wasn't. "It's just a regular dinner date."
"It's our first date Gogo!" Honey Lemon exclaimed. "I wanna dress nice."
"If it makes you comfortable." She shrugged. "Do you need help getting your dress on?"
"I'm good!" The chemist opened the door, she was wearing a beautiful sparkling pink dress that went down to her knees. Gogo just stared at her, and she blushed. "Um, is this too much?"
"No, it's perfect." Gogo smiled. "You look beautiful."
"Aww, thanks!" Honey Lemon smiled. "Let's not idle anymore then!"
Gogo was the one who drove them to the Playland Arcade restaurant on her motorcycle, it wasn't a very long ride and it was nice how Honey Lemon clung to her for the ride. "That wasn't so bad, was it Honey?" She asked when they got there.
Honey Lemon shook the burrs out of her honey-blonde hair. "No, but you felt nice." She smiled, and the engineer replied with a gushing one.
"You're too cute." Gogo smirked. "Let's get inside, it's a little windy tonight."
They arrived at the restaurant. "Hi, table for two?" Honey Lemon asked the person at the reception counter.
"Of course, right this way please!" They were led to a spot that was by the bar, but not close to the downstairs area where the arcade was located. "Our waiter will be with you in just a second." While they waited, they took the opportunity to read the menus on the table.
"Wow, they have a lot of beer options." Gogo pointed out.
"Leiko…"
"I'm kidding, I'm kidding." She held up her hands. "Never was a fan of that alcohol stuff, I'll just get one of the fruit flavored sodas."
"Me too!" Honey Lemon grinned. "I really wanna get mango, or maybe tangerine?"
"How about I get tangerine, and you get mango, and we could try each other's drinks?" Gogo offered.
"That sounds lovely." The waiter came and they quickly ordered their drinks. "So, how are we gonna split the bill?"
"I don't mind paying for the whole thing." Gogo shrugged.
"Oh, are you sure?" Honey Lemon frowned. "I could just pay for what I order."
"Sounds fine." They got their drinks, so while planning what to order for the main course, Gogo tried the mango Honey Lemon ordered, and she did the vice-versa.
"Wow. The tangerine is potent." The chemist blinked.
Gogo scrunched her face. "Mango's okay, I don't like it though." So they swapped the drinks back. "Are you enjoying the mango?"
"Mhmm!" Honey Lemon nodded. "It's very sweet."
"Like your namesake."
She blushed red. "Gogo!" Then cleared her throat. "Um, I never got the origin story of your nickname, how'd you get it from Fred?"
"Showed up to campus once on my motorcycle." Gogo replied. "And then Tadashi said a Sonic joke, Fred was next to him at the time."
"Ohhhh." Honey Lemon nodded.
"What about you?"
"Well, it wasn't a first meeting." She explained. "I knew Freddie for a bit, and I guess a few days later he started calling me that because of my last name, and I have a sweet personality."
"I thought it was because of the drink."
"Hmm. Maybe." Honey Lemon shrugged. "Now some of my cousins are calling me that, since I brought it up."
"Oh, really?" Gogo raised an eyebrow. "My step-dad just made the same Sonic joke Fred did, and then my dad started cracking up. I felt so betrayed."
"I didn't know your father remarried." Honey Lemon noted. "Was he the parent who worked at the car repair shop?"
"Yep." The engineer smirked. "Apparently in my second year, my dad met my step-dad at a gas station, and then they hit it off."
"Aww that's cute." Honey Lemon clapped. "I'm happy he's doing great these days!"
Gogo nodded. "Yeah, how are your parents?"
"They're fine, just looking after my younger siblings and cousins a lot." She smiled. "I got a lot of calls after the star incident."
"Yeah." Everyone had gotten concerned messages from their family, she remembered Honey Lemon speaking to a lot of people while she chilled on the couch. "I don't want to experience that ever again, I thought Fred and Hiro almost died."
The chemist slowly nodded. "I don't want any of us to get hurt." Then all of a sudden, their phones chimed.
Gogo checked hers first, her eyes widening. "Are you kidding me?" She showed Honey Lemon what was up. "Noodle Burger Boy and Trina are wrecking a warehouse. We gotta go."
At that moment, the waiter showed up. "I hope you enjoyed your drinks, would you like any appetizers?"
Both girls gave awkward glances. "Something came up so we're gonna have to ask for the check." Honey Lemon sweatdropped. "Sorry."
"It's fine. You're not the first couple who's had to run out on us." The waiter smiled. "Hope you can come back soon."
"We will!"
They had quickly gotten over to the warehouse in question which surprise, surprise, it was owned by Krei-Tech. "Hey girls!" Fred was the only one outside the warehouse, and there were sounds of fighting inside.
Gogo glared. "This better have not been a hoax, we were in the middle of our date."
"We at least got to order drinks." Honey Lemon sighed.
Fred gasped. "Oh my god, I'm so sorry you two." He winced. "Noodle Burger Boy busted up my shoulder, and the others were busy tackling Trina. She's stealing some of the old tech there."
"Is your shoulder gonna be okay?" The chemist was about to pull out the medical supplies she kept in her chem-purse, but Fred waved it off.
"Nah, I got some stuff in here to relieve the pain. Save the others! Trina was really gung-ho about whacking Hiro." He pointed to the warehouse. "She's crazy…"
Gogo felt her eyes twitch. "You don't say?"
Though her annoyance washed away when seeing Hiro run around the warehouse dodging swings from said girl. Meanwhile Wasabi was screaming as he tried not getting fried via NBB's laser eyes.
"Quit running away from me, Hamada!" Trina screeched when another one of her attacks missed.
"No thanks!" He yelped. "Baymax, rocket fist!"
A rocket fist slammed into Trina's back, but then she turned her attention to the healthcare companion.
"Do you wish to surrender?" He blinked.
The robot girl smirked. "Well, if I can't lay a hand on you, I'll lay a hand on hugs over here!"
Before Hiro could toss one of his magnets, Trina leapt at Baymax, but she slammed into a goopy wall Honey Lemon quickly threw down.
Gogo got to work rescuing Wasabi, throwing a few discs at NBB until one of them knocked him back a little, and Wasabi regrouped with the rest of them.
"Gee sis! Looks like we're in the deep fryer now." NBB pointed out.
"Thanks for letting me know." She sarcastically replied. "This whole trip was a bust."
"Well, you could go on another trip to… robot jail." Wasabi weakly fired at them. "Yeah, I'm gonna leave the catchphrases to Fred."
Baymax turned to Wasabi. "Is there such thing as robot jail?" There was a chorus of shrugs, they all ducked as Trina threw a crate at them.
"She has a lot of issues to work out." Gogo pointed out.
Trina overheard that. "No thanks to you murderers!"
"For the last time!" Hiro exclaimed. "We did not kill your father on purpose, heck I even tried looking for him!"
"Liar! Not only did you kill him, but you corrupted my sister!"
"You corrupted Mikan, you're one to talk!"
Wasabi turned to Honey Lemon. "This is what's been going on for the entire fight."
"Oh, dear."
Gogo groaned, having enough of the arguing and threw a disk at Trina, who caught it in one of her claws. "I'm so done with this right now, Noodle we're leaving!" She turned to the former mascot, his eyes lit up red.
"Toodle noodle Big Heroes!" NBB shot several lasers that brought down some of the roof, Baymax held up the debris to prevent them from getting crushed, but by the time the dust settled…
"Great, they've escaped." Gogo groaned.
"I detect signs of frustration." Baymax noted. "Would you like a hug?"
"Not right now." At that moment, Fred bounced back into the warehouse, still rubbing his injured shoulder.
"Guys! Did they take anything?" Fred questioned.
Hiro shook his head. "No, apparently what they were looking for wasn't here."
"Oh, thank goodness!" Honey Lemon gave a sigh of relief. "But what was that about blaming us for what happened with Obake?"
Gogo shrugged. "Who knows, but she has no right to take her anger out on us."
"Or Hiro." Wasabi added. "You alright dude?"
He shook his head. "No, this is just making me feel guilty. I should've looked harder…"
"Hiro. You did all that you could." Baymax pointed out. "There is no need to blame yourself."
"What Baymax said!" Fred pointed out. "Don't listen to her, she's just a bad influence."
"Thanks guys."
Wasabi then gasped. "I'm gonna be late for my date with Chris!" He realized. "Gotta go!" He then started bolting out of the warehouse. "Bye guys!"
The others just stared. "Is he okay?" The comic fan questioned.
"At least his date isn't going to get interrupted." Honey Lemon frowned.
Baymax patted her shoulder. "There, there."
Wasabi was barely able to get dressed fancy before meeting Chris outside the restaurant. "Sorry I'm late!" He told the assistant once seeing him by the entrance. "Traffic, y'know?"
Chris waved it off. "I feel that, some people should not be given their license." He turned to the host who was outside the restaurant. "Hi, table for two?"
The host nodded. "Name?"
"Christopher Lupus."
"Hm… oh you do have a reservation for nine o' clock. Your table will be ready in about ten minutes."
"Perfect." They spent a good chunk of time talking about their week before being settled. The place where they were seated was a good spot in the main hall, where Wasabi could get a good look at the flashy chandelier on the wall and the guy entertaining the diners by playing piano.
The conversation picked back up when they got a glass of red wine each.
"So, Chris." Wasabi fiddled with his glass. "Have you been to this restaurant?"
"Once or twice." Chris replied. "I prefer making food myself. Liv and I sometimes go here as a treat. We haven't been here in about eight months."
"Oh. Wow." He blinked. "That's a long time."
"Mhm. We've been so busy with Sycorax as of late." Chris hummed. "The internships, helping Knox, investments, we have it all."
"Sounds like a fulfilling life." Wasabi chuckled. "I just have my studies and friends to keep me busy, I'm not much of a daredevil."
"Interesting. What about your family?" He raised an eyebrow. "I'm not much in contact with my folks since I moved here."
"Aw." Wasabi frowned. "I'd hate to not be in contact with my parents or my siblings, I'm one out of four."
"Four?" Chris blinked. "I have one sibling and I thought my house was crowded."
"It's not that crowded." He chuckled. "I'm the second oldest, so I took care of my younger siblings while my parents were at work."
"What do your parents do for a living?"
He grinned. "Dad's an orthodontist and Mom's a hospital nurse." Wasabi gave a light chuckle. "I picked up a lot of their habits for keeping clean. Never really got sick as a kid."
"Interesting!" Chris smiled. "Does healthcare run in the family then?"
"Pretty much."
Their food then came to the table, Wasabi had one of their famous salads while Chris had a medium-rare steak.
Wasabi winced at seeing the blood seep out of the meat. "I cannot stomach rare food, at all." He commented. "How can you stand tasting the blood?"
"I think it adds to the flavor." The assistant grinned. "How's your salad?"
"It's amazing!" Wasabi took another forkful of the flavors. "I've had too much junk food the past few days, I really need to say no to those free Noodle Burgers Fred offers."
"Fred as in Frederick Frederickson?"
"Yep." He nodded. "Always treats us to lunch, he can be a bit hyperactive, but he's a good friend."
"That's nice to hear. Someone should always be surrounded by good friends." Chris told him. "You know that they say, you may have a lot of friends, but few are loyal."
Wasabi raised an eyebrow. "Do they say that?"
"I've heard a lot of things."
They had finished their meals, both of them a little too full for dessert so the check was given. Wasabi felt his eyes pop out at the prices. "Oh, boy. Did expect the salad to be that much."
It would definitely cost a lot on his budget, a lot of Super-Driving to refill his wallet too...
"Don't worry, dinner's on me tonight." Chris waved it off.
"What?! Are you sure?" He gasped. "This was really expensive!"
"I'm sure, I'm sure." The assistant smiled. "It's my treat after-all."
Wasabi wanted to protest, but there was no budging on Chris's end. "Okay, then." He nodded. "Did you have a good time?"
"Mhm." Chris's charming eyes stared back at him. "It was a very lovely night."
As Wasabi went back to his apartment, those charming eyes were on his mind as he went to bed. Happiness fluttered in his chest, he had a boyfriend now, and an amazing night. Things were looking up for him.
On Chris' end? He was grinning like the cheshire cat as he got back to Sycorax. "Why are you making that face?" Liv questioned.
"I was just on my date with Roger, it was so sweet." Chris giggled. "Such a gentleman, I can't wait until our next one."
Liv rolled her eyes. "I don't care about your love life, as long as you stay focused on our goal."
"Don't worry, I'm just having a little bit of fun." He smirked. "Roger's a dear, but between you and him, you know who I'll choose."
She grinned. "Good boy. Why don't you go check on the labs for me, okay?"
"Yes, darling." He hummed, going back to work. Even though he did enjoy his new relationship with Roger, Chris knew it'd only last for a while, but he'd have fun while his boyfriend was following after him a lovesick puppy.
He got a kick out seeing the way Sara reacted to his taunts, him and Liv's work was stressful, he had to have something to help keep him sane.
Besides, Roger seemed like he'd get over it anyways.
AN: something something insert witty catchphrase here
these ANs are starting to get hard guys.
Uh anyways have some good ol fashion sad kid hours before the dates!
Yeah David and Mikan are mostly upset that Sara is upset, they're mad at the situation, not specifically Wasabi. Mikan's a lil' mad at him but Sara's reminding them "hey guys don't be mean to Wasabi he didn't do anything mean on purpose" bc she's not having any drama rn.
Also some Steven and Sally backstory, this is totally not going to be mentioned again in this arc, nope, totally not
And more sad Ari hours. Even though she's been doing fine since then, she's still not over that dance. And neither is Hiro, he's starting to get real sus of "Liv" though.
As for the dates, I personally apologize to all you Honeygogo shippers in the audience who had to watch their date get interrupted. But least Wasabi didn't have that luck- oh no Chris is being a sneaky villain, oh nooo...
Yeah Chris is low-key playing Wasabi (and ig Sara) like fiddles, this should be concerning.
Okay joking sum of the chapter aside, this is the last update for awhile. I'm not sure when the next chapter will be, probably a month ig? I haven't been doing well emotionally and I kind of need a break from posting until I can get my thoughts collected.
But feel free to use that time to read some other good bh6 stories out there or read other fics I've posted. Or read the bh6 series manga. Recently the bh6 series manga came out and I have been reading that sucker over and over! It's just so gosh darn good n.n
And that leads to the QOTW: What's your favorite manga?
See you guys not-next week! Eventually though.
