As Rachel woke up to her surroundings, she felt a pain in her throat, and something soft her back was weighing on. "Oh good, she's waking up!" That was her mother's voice, where was she?
Pink and blue blurred in her vision as something wet and slimy pressed against her nose. "Rach!" Katie cried out. "Never scare me again!"
"Katie?" She rasped, wincing at the ache in her throat and how sore she sounded.
Her mother Sarah placed something cold to her throat. "She might need to use the ice pack more."
"Agreed." Her father replied. Oh, I'm in my room. Rachel realized as her senses got more clearer, including the slight pain in her chest, how had she gotten from Muihara to her bed?
The blue noticed her confused gaze and cleared her throat to explain. "Oh, some of Big Hero 6 helped carry you home, the lizard and the big red guy." Her ears flattened. "Do you remember what happened before you were knocked out?"
She tried recollecting her memories for a whole minute before slowly speaking. "I found Hiro, and two others. Then the Hibagon attacked. Krei came back with a car, went in. Last thing was someone lifting up my shirt to wrap the wounds to my chest." Rachel groaned. "Not looking forward to that talk."
"I doubt it'll be a bad one." Katie comforted her.
"They said the Hibagon was the one who injured you." Elio pinched the bridge of his nose. "How did that happen?"
"Katie did say Rachel was visiting that Ned fellow for her." Sarah explained. "It's neither of your faults, it's whatever caused Ned's mutation."
It wasn't Ned. Rachel frowned, but it was better for them to think of that. If they found out, and tried to confront Liv… Her chest flared from phantom pain and she let out a cry. Her family recoiled at the sound. "I need alone time." It was hard keeping the tears at bay.
"Of course, of course." Elio gave her a small smile. Both of her parents left the room and closed the door. But Katie hesitated.
"Katie. That includes you." The blue just mumbled something. "What?"
"It wasn't the Hibagon." Katie's gaze was dark. "There was no blood on his claws, and they would've punctured your throat but there's strangle marks."
"It probably was washed off from mud and dirt." Rachel replied.
"No." She placed a paw on her chest. "Who did this?"
Rachel knew her best friend wouldn't budge, cats were good at sniffing out the truth. "Liv had Chris try to kill me. He… he's a monster."
Snarling claws and bristling brown fur blurred, his fangs curled into an ugly snarl. The claws pinning her down to the ground, she felt her head grow weak from the lack of oxygen as her vision blurred.
"I wouldn't have gotten away if it wasn't for an angry bear, I don't know why it went after Chris but I wasn't going to look a gift horse in the mouth."
A bear's roar and the feeling of air in her lungs, adrenaline kicked.
"GET BACK HERE-" Cut off from the bear, she ran, ran like the wind, her chest on fire and feeling like rocks were jabbed into her throat.
Katie stepped back in horror. "I'm going to kill them." She mewed. "I knew it was her. She's the one who pulled the strings in Sub-Level 9, who manipulated poor Ari's feelings, and caused the other monsters too. And now she's gone and done it."
Rachel sighed. "This is why I didn't want you to know."
"Why not?!"
"We can't do anything. It just makes you mad."
"Not on my watch!" Katie snarled. "Tell the truth, we have proof, Orso Knox could back us up, and if he mutates again that'll just prove her point!" Her claws flashed seeing Rachel's hesitance. "Why are you being a coward about this Rach? You can't curl into a corner and expect the superheroes to fix everything! They have limits, and you could-"
"KATIE!"
She started coughing from having to yell. Katie shrunk back, sheathing her claws as she crouched down.
A hand went to her throat as she rubbed it. "Ow that hurts… but you're not thinking clearly, Liv is two steps ahead of everyone. She could either mutate someone we know if we put thoughts into people's heads. She could kill us, mutate us, or mutate my parents or even-"
Now the tears were flowing. "I don't wanna lose anyone else Katie, We got lucky with her, I don't want..." She couldn't talk anymore, and just continued to cry a little. "I don't want to lose my-"
"Hey." Katie recoiled, placing a paw to Rachel's throat, trying to comfort her. "I'm sorry Rach. Liv's really scary, I don't want her to hurt anyone else like he did to me…"
"I know, Kate."
"Well, I'm not gonna let her hurt you again. I promise." She curled next to her. "I'm sure Elio and Sarah would understand if you tell them."
"No, if Dad shows the slightest hint to her that he knows, she's gonna turn him and Mom like she did with High Voltage. Maybe turning families into monsters is a trend of hers." Rachel grumbled. "We can't tell them, okay? It's better to blame the Hibagon."
"Fine." Once the tense conversation was over, the two decided to sleep the rest of the hectic day off.
Unknown to the two, the adults had been eavesdropping. "She wasn't going to tell us." Sarah's dark-brown eyes were wide with horror. "My baby wasn't going to tell me who hurt her."
Elio pulled her into a comforting embrace. "Our daughter is still hurting, she's worried about us." They had walked into the living room to talk, not wanting to disturb the children with their sobbing.
"It's not fair!" Sarah wailed into his arms. "It's not fair she has to deal with that! Liv's going to pay for hurting our child."
"I know the feeling." Elio couldn't do much now. But he would keep track of her misdeeds, he'd keep an eye on everything she was up to, and when the time came for justice, the hammer would swing down. "But for now, we have to respect Rachel's wishes. Until she feels comfortable enough to tell us how she feels."
As much as he hated to admit it, their daughter had a point, there would be bad consequences if they tried to take down Liv without any backup. At least we know that Knox's mutation wasn't caused out of the blue, poor guy, and to think he and Liv were once friends.
"I hope so too." She sighed. "It hurts, I want to comfort her so badly and make sure she's okay, after what happened with-"
Elio nodded. "We'll get through this Sarah. No villain is going to tear our family apart again, and we'll be there for our girls."
"I know, Ellie. I know." Sarah embraced him once more. "You're not going to do anything reckless, are you?"
"No!" He pinched the bridge of his nose. "I'm mad at myself for not catching the signs."
"I don't think anyone did." Sarah shook her head. "Don't beat yourself up for it, if a detective like you couldn't crack the case? No one else would've."
Meanwhile…
"Ach-oo!" Hiro sneezed, nearly dropping the patch he was observing. He should be asleep right now. He and Mochi really, the calico was watching him look at the patch with a careful eye. At least he had someone to talk to, everyone else in the cafe was asleep.
"Meow." Mochi tapped his shoulder with his tail.
"I'm fine." He brushed it off. "But I've seen this patch before."
"Mrow?"
"At the gala. Karmi invented a nanoceptor." It was the same circuit and pattern, except this one was modified to mutate Ned into the Hibagon. "And guess who had access to her invention?"
"Meow mrow?"
"That's right, Liv frikin' Amara." He remembered being so jealous of Karmi back when Liv preferred her invention over Baymax, but perhaps he dodged a bullet. That's cruel of me to think like that. A part of him was worried about Karmi since realizing Liv's true colors. Considering how the woman treated her back in sub-level nine… he had a right to be concerned.
"Meow!" This time it was Mochi's paw that hit his shoulder.
"Fine." He groaned. "I do have to go to sleep." He was going to get brunch with Megan tomorrow. "And Mochi?"
The calico stared back at him.
"Thank you for saving me."
"Meow." He didn't have to be a cat whisperer to translate that.

Wasabi: ?
"I don't know why Fred says stuff like that, but it's kind of hilarious." Hiro was at Joe's Diner, getting brunch with Megan, and he was showing her the group chat.
"Remember that one time he was at our table in the Lucky Cat for pancakes, and then one of your friends dragged him off?" Megan chuckled.
"He was being a third-wheel." He rolled his eyes. "How was it working at the Lucky Cat for a day? My sister can get intense when she's in work mode."
She shrugged. "It was tricky, but I had fun. Was your day fun?"
"Haha no." Hiro gave her a look. "I was on the bridge when the Hibagon showed up."
Megan froze in horror. "Oh my god, are you okay?"
"I lived." She punched him on the shoulder. "Chill! But I found this-" Hiro quickly cut himself off. Do not tell Megan that you suspect Liv is causing all the monsters, confront Liv first before that. "Nevermind."
"Y'know. Didn't the Hibagon appear shortly after it was said that Sycorax was gonna buy the Muihara Woods, but then Krei-Tech did." Megan pointed out. "I brought this up to your sister and friends, and I'll do it again. They're profiting off of the monster situations."
Hiro just stared at her. "What?"
"Megan, I could kiss you right now." He blurted out. Forget waiting to confront Liv, he had a friend who cracked the code too!
She gave him a weird look. "Please don't."
"Sorry." He shook his head. "But I think Liv has a hand in these situations too! I found a transdermal patch at the scene when the Hibagon turned back into Ned."
Megan raised an eyebrow. "What's a transdermal patch?"
"It's something my friend Karmi invented." Hiro explained. "And Liv was the one who invested in her project, and she's currently an intern at Sycorax."
Her eyes went wide. "Oh my god, she's totally behind the monster attacks."
"Yeah!" He nodded. "She gave me red flags when talking to Karmi. And she said some stuff to my sister to make her feel worse."
"What kind of weird stuff?"
"Stuff about the dance. Said that Ari's friend didn't care about her, which was a bunch of lies that kept Ari from investigating and putting her trust in Liv." Hiro frowned at the reminder. Ari's going to be devastated when she finds out Liv's behind it all.
"Oh." Megan frowned.
Right, the last time both of them talked about the dance was during the trip to Playland Arcade. Hiro had spent more time telling Ari to not think about the dance than he had told himself. "I'm a little surprised you weren't as shocked as everyone else when High Voltage… mutated." The words felt like opening a can of worms.
"Maybe because I talked with Juniper for a bit." She mumbled. "You and Ari were chatting for a while."
"It was less of 'chatting' and me berating my sister like every older brother should do." Hiro protested. "Didn't do much good though. She still got hurt."
He paused. "What did you two talk about? Should I be concerned?"
Megan shook her head. "No. Juniper didn't do anything suspicious, she acted normal for a better term of a word. I didn't even think she and her mom were supervillains until Big Hero 6 showed up."
She gave him a glare. "For your information, that was what I was about to say before you rudely interrupted me, I had been in the city for weeks so I knew what Big Hero 6 looked like, Hiro."
He gave a nervous chuckle. "Can you chill with the shade, please? I thought we were friends!"
"I wish I could still talk to her, she was really something else." She hummed. "I know what happened, but I still remember her freaking out… that's gotta hurt."
"Yeah." He did remember the look of horror on the teen turned mutant's face once she saw what she did to Ari.
"Wait, what did you say at first?"
"Nothing you heard nothing!"
"Are you sure you're doing okay?"
"Fine Fred. I'm fine." As happy as Rachel was to see Fred, who had brought Honey Lemon and Gogo with him to visit her, she thought they were overbearing. "My throat's a little better, I just feel dizzy."
"That's not good." Gogo frowned. "Is your chest okay?"
"It's fine." Rachel snapped.
Honey Lemon flashed a look of concern. "Gogo was just concerned, there's no need to snap."
"Sorry."
Katie, who was watching the conversation, stood up. "Okay. Everyone else out of the room."
"Aww, but why!" Fred protested.
"Because!" The comic fan pouted and left, Honey Lemon shortly followed, when Gogo tried to leave, she spoke up again. "Not you. We need to have a chat."
Gogo turned away from the door, then closed it. "Fine." She sat on the edge of the bed. "What do you want to talk about?"
"Yesterday." Rachel mumbled. "You had to lift up my shirt to apply the bandages, right?"
"Correct." Gogo nodded.
"Did you… notice anything weird?" Her face was turning red from embarrassment.
"Nope."
She blinked. "Pardon?"
"I didn't notice anything weird." Gogo shrugged. "Not sure what you want me to say."
There was an awkward silence.
"Ha!" Katie was the one who broke it. "I told you she wasn't going to be rude!" The blue smirked. "You had nothing to worry about!"
"Katie…" Rachel winced. "You're making this more awkward."
The engineer then realized what the two were talking about. "If you guys thought I was gonna give Rach here grief about being trans, you really did have nothing to worry about."
Both of them paused and gave her a look. "Uh…" Katie blinked.
"You're not the only person I've met who's transgender, so's my friend Wasabi, if you ask him about it he'll gladly give you some advice if you'd like." She added. "You don't have to tell people if you don't want to. I just cared about making sure you were okay at the moment."
Rachel looked down sheepishly. "Now I feel dumb, I'm sorry." She mumbled. "I started my transition shortly before moving to San Fransokyo. It's awkward talking to people about it since they acted so weird about it in New York, like mind your own business!"
"Yikes." Gogo winced. "Sorry you had to deal with that."
"It's fine. I'm over it." She shrugged. "Can Honey Lemon and Fred come back in before it gets awkward?"
"No need!" The latter opened the door. "Btdubs we might've eavesdropped just a little."
"No judgement from us though!" Honey Lemon added.
The scruffy brunette groaned and buried her face into her pillow.
"She's flustered." Katie explained.
Rachel started making squeaky noises from said pillow. "This is the worst." She mumbled. "Uh, so I heard Katie went on a joy adventure with Mochi."
"Yeah she did!" Fred crossed his arms. "Mochi snuck out to visit her, I had to call Big Hero 6 to get them back!"
"Now that's overkill." The blue huffed. "We just explored the city, and watched the whole Hibagon thing."
Honey Lemon cleared her throat. "Should you bring that up?"
"I don't mind." Rachel shrugged. "I heard Mochi attacked the Hibagon though, and then he turned back into Ned."
"Yeah, he did!" Fred dramatically exclaimed. "I am so proud of that boy. He grew up so fast!"
"I honestly didn't expect him to do that." Katie added. "I just stood there and watched."
Gogo nodded. "Yep. It was surprising."
"Ahem." The group turned to see Sarah by the door, holding a plate of cookies.
"I was wondering if you all wanted some snacks."
"I'd like some!" Fred walked over and took a handful, he gave half to Rachel and Katie before digging in. Honey Lemon and Gogo also took some.
Sarah chuckled seeing the comic fan hand some to her daughter. "I'm glad you all visited, the girls were starting to run out of viral cat videos to watch."
"Did not!" Katie protested.
"What's wrong with viral dog videos?" Gogo raised an eyebrow.
"Not as cute." Rachel huffed.
"Dogs are just as cute as cats." Honey Lemon pointed out.
Katie twitched her nose at that. "Are not!"
"Yes they are."
"Nuh-huh!"
Gogo pinched the bridge of her nose. "Children please…" And that caused Rachel to start giggling uncontrollably.
It was evening when Ari felt something poke her shoulders. "Hey, hey Ari?" She looked up to see Rowan standing over her.
"What?" She asked.
"Why do you wear that sweater all the time?"
She blinked up at him. "Uh… why do you ask?"
"I'm curious!" He blurted out. A part of Ari wondered if that was the truth, but she was too tired to care. "You wear it all the time!"
Ari blushed. "Well, my mother made me this sweater, okay?"
"Ari you know she's not-"
"She made this sweater for me! That's all I have left of her." That got Rowan to back away, shock in his green eyes.
He then looked away. "Oh… sorry." He looked back up. "Can I borrow one of your dresses?"
"Uh, sure." Ari shrugged. "I don't care, go nuts."
"Yay!" The look on his face was adorable. "Thanks Ari! Byeee!" He then left her alone. Ari shrugged it off and tried going back to her nap.
"Hey sis?" Hiro had yanked her blankets away. "Aunt Cass told us to get dressed nicely. Apparently we've been invited to dinner somewhere."
She got up. "Where?"
"Chief Cruz." He groaned.
"Oh, him." While she didn't have anything against Megan's dad, his comment about "vigilantes" rubbed her the wrong way. "Wait so we're going to his house?"
"Yep."
"Huh. That's generous of him. He and Aunt Cass are old friends, I'm not surprised."
"If he makes one comment about Big Hero 6 I'm leaving though." Hiro commented. "I am stressed enough about the monster situation, I don't need any more of it."
"Same."
The car ride wasn't very long.
"I'm excited that Diego invited us for dinner!" Cass was telling them. "He always was quite the chef, can't wait to see what he has prepared for us."
Hiro groaned. "Was that a cooking pun?"
"Perhaps!"
Ari rolled her eyes. "It'll be nice to see Megan." She turned over to Hiro. "You guys had brunch together today, how'd it go?"
He thought about them talking about Liv and the dance and winced. "Uh… it went great?"
"Huh." She then lowered her voice into a whisper. "I know you said you wanna leave if Chief Cruz insults Big Hero 6, but you know what would be great?"
"What?"
"If we annoyed him by talking non-stop about Big Hero 6."
Hiro had to suppress his giggles to not alert their aunt of their plan. "Sister, you are an evil genius and I love you for it."
"Thanks, Hiro."
When they got to their destination, Hiro noted that it was a nice neighborhood.
Figures. He shrugged, Cass knocked on the door and Megan was the one who opened it.
"Hey guys!" She waved to them. "Glad to have you over."
"Hi Megan!" Ari waved back.
"Glad to see you." Cass smiled. "May we come in?"
"Sure." They walked inside and took off their jackets. "I hope the drive here wasn't too bad."
"There wasn't much traffic." Hiro shrugged. "Little chilly though."
"You're dramatic." Ari rolled her eyes. "It's not that cold."
"Not that- you're wearing a wooly sweater!" He pointed out. "You never take it off. Except when wearing dresses."
"One, it's cozy and two, dresses are nice."
"Kids." Cass chided them.
"Sorry."
"Where is Baymax?" Megan saw that the healthcare companion wasn't with them.
"He doesn't eat, and the car would be crowded." Hiro explained. "Sides, he's at Fred's house for some reason. Something something comics."
"Why am I not surprised?"
Diego greeted them in the living room. "Cassie!"
He and Cass exchanged hugs. "And your kids! Nice to see you two."
"Hi Mr. Cruz." Ari shyly waved. "Is dinner ready?"
"Just about." Megan told her. "Dad's serving pork and fries for dinner, it's really good."
"Ooh, nice!" Hiro grinned, he took a seat at the table. Ari sat next to him, Megan sat across from the two, and the adults were on opposite ends of the table.
Diego each handed them a plate with a few pork slices and a side of fries.
"The fries are a homemade recipe." He explained. "Hope you enjoy it."
Cass was the one who took the first bite. "It's wonderful, Diego!" She smiled at him. "I can tell you put a lot of love into your dish."
"Thanks." He smiled back.
Hiro and Megan quickly dug in, while Ari just nibbled her fries.
"I don't eat pork." She explained to the latter when given a questionable gaze. So she just added lots of veggies onto her plate.
"More for me then!" Hiro took an extra helping of pork. "Enjoy all the fries for days."
"Thanks." She added more fries to her plate. "These are good."
"I know!" Megan grinned. "One of these days I will learn what the recipe is." She gave her dad a puppy eyed look, he just shook his head.
"You'd get sick of fries if you learned how." Diego told her.
"Aww."
"So, Mr. Cruz." Hiro raised his hand. "Can I ask you a question?"
"Sure." He smiled. "You can just call me Diego, Hiro."
"Diego, right." As the chief took a sip of his water, he continued. "So have you ever talked with any members of Big Hero 6?"
He nearly spat out his water. "I have not." Diego frowned.
"Aww that's a shame!" Ari pouted. "I talked to some of them, they're nice! Though one time they yelled at me."
"Why?" Megan raised an eyebrow.
"Ari did a reckless dumb thing, again." Hiro gave her a look.
"Hey!" She huffed. "But it's true. They were just worried, that's nice of them because they worry about people."
Diego looked as if he swallowed a lemon. "Right. Sure. Well, I too worry about the people of San Fransokyo. There has been a lot going on. Considering what happened at Bridgeton with those two criminals attacking."
He failed to notice the kids wincing at the mention. "We've been doing our best to figure out what's going on."
"The superheroes probably have the same idea as you." Hiro told him. "It was cool seeing them at school though, right Megan?"
"Yeah Megan." Ari added. "Tell your dad how cool it was seeing Big Hero 6. The only cool thing about that dance."
"It was pretty cool." She shrugged. "Despite things going wrong, it was one of the two things that went right."
"What was the other thing?"
Megan hesitated before replying. "Hope this doesn't make you too upset, but before realizing she was a criminal, it was nice talking to one of High Voltage. She was sweet."
"Yes." Ari slowly nodded. "She was."
Hiro was glad that for once Ari wasn't tearing up at the mention of Juniper, then he saw the distressed look on Diego's face and it took all his restraint not to laugh hysterically.
"I'm glad you kids had some fun out of that night." Cass smiled. "Right Diego?"
"Right…" He winced. "So how has school been for you two?"
"It's been alright." Hiro replied.
"Fun!" Ari grinned. "My classmates talk about Big Hero 6 a lot, they're all really big fans of them."
"You mentioned this on your first day." He pointed out. "Hey Megan, do you count as a big fan of Big Hero 6?"
"Yeah, tell us!"
"I guess." Megan smiled. "They're cool."
Diego placed a hand to his head. "I need a drink…" Hiro heard him mumble, and suppressed another giggle.
He and Ari shared a high-five under the table.
The dessert was cake. A nice chocolate cake with vanilla frosting inside. "This is so good, I want seconds." Hiro savored the taste.
"Same." Ari added.
"No seconds, you kids don't need that much sugar." Cass told them, they both frowned.
"I feel your pain guys." Megan flashed an awkward smile. "Our parents are no fun."
Diego sighed. "Surely you kids don't think that."
"Well, Aunt Cass is cooler." Hiro flashed a grin.
"So cool she might as well be a superhero!" Ari added. "You're not a member of Big Hero 6 by any chance, are you Aunt Cass?"
"I'm flattered by your compliments but I'm too busy running the cafe for that, kids." Cass chuckled.
The chief of police's eye was starting to twitch. "You two sure like Big Hero 6, don't you?"
"Yup!" Ari smirked. "Who doesn't?"
"Mhm." Hiro nodded in agreement. "Right Megan?"
"Yeah, can't think of anyone who doesn't like Big Hero 6, besides the supervillains."
She then realized what she said and turned to her dad. "Sorry Dad."
He just sighed dejectedly. "It's okay Megan. The force hasn't been doing good lately, I'm hoping to change that."
"Interesting." Cass hummed. "I've chatted with Detective Rosemary a few times, you had trouble with those serial robberies for quite a bit."
"Yes." Diego frowned. "It gave us a run for our money."
"No pun intended." Ari whispered to her brother, who couldn't hold his giggling this time and sputtered.
"Sorry." Hiro chuckled. "That was too good."
He heard another sigh. "Well, I hope you enjoyed your dinner."
"It was great!" Cass smiled. "We'll have to do this again."
Diego winced at the thought. "Might not be for a while…"
The two of them just started giggling, while Megan shot them a weird look.
"You guys are weird." She stated.
AN: I tried a different type of formatting for this, lmk if you like it better than the old formatting!
Aftermath of Rachel's near death-encounter in Muirahara! *wince* I am so sorry my poor bby
And also a bit of Hiro and Megan talking about Sycorax. I 100% think Megan should've been involved in investigating Sycorax, she's a reporter, and it would've gotten her to interact with Karmi, it would've been so cool!
Speaking of Megan, me writing Hiro and Ari trolling Diego was just me being like "This is what you get for putting the fandom thru the fugitive arc, Snooze!"
No spoilers on how I'm gonna handle that in HOF, but let's just say I'll make sure that he doesn't have as much power as he did before.
Seriously, why did no one in the city protest him declaring bh6 as fugitives?
But that's for another day! See you guys next week for the Mayoi ep! Hehehehe
QOTW: Speaking of the Fugitive Arc, what aspects of it did you enjoy?
