Skyrim: A Cautionary Tale!
On the Road Again
-''-
So this is what it's like to feel betrayed, at least that is what I thought as I lay bleeding on the ground. My vision was blurry and I could barely see through the pain in my skull. Everything was getting so far away, am I dying? Is this what it feels like to die? I didn't really want to die, I want to live, I want to find a nice spouse and settle down. Cook for him, clean for him and fight for him. Why did it have to end like this? Why did I have to be betrayed, when I had so much to lose? Who betrayed me? Who shot me and why does it hurt so much? Not just in my skull but in my chest too, do I know the person well?
I woke with a start and gasped, then there was that male. What was his name? I couldn't remember. "Hey, you're finally awake. What the hell was that back there?" I remember we left for whiterun and we were leaving Riverwood but I didn't remember anything else. "You just collapsed out of no where and.. hey are you listening to me?" I nod sheepishly. "Whatever, just try not to be a burden this time, would ya?" I gave him my best glare as I stood up from the bed before realizing I was naked. The male threw my clothes at my face and a dull ache was the response. I groaned and pressed my palm to my forehead. Two large hands roughly pushed me back on the bed tossed my clothes beside me. "Hey, what the hell is wrong with you? You don't look well."
"I was shot in the back of the head near the Border of skyrim and left for dead, then I wander into an imperial ambush and get clocked out again," I replied. "Not to mention they also tried to kill me. So what isn't wrong with me?" The male tsked.
"Fine show me where you were shot," the male replied shortly. I pull my hair apart ad the spot that hurt the most. "Holy crap, gimme a few minutes." He walked away to a pack that was sitting on the other bed in the room and came back. "Here bite this," he replied offering a bit of wood. I bit into it and held it in my teeth. A sharp pain had me clenching down on it, it was worse than I could have imagined. Black spots appeared in my vision, then relief, I felt a slight sting and some more pain but it wasn't nearly as intense as what I had just felt. I heard my ragged breathing and tried to calm it as the male deftly finished whatever it was he was doing. I heard something snap and then the male was finished, it was only then that I realized how close the other male's crotch was to my face. I felt heat rise to my face but I was more angry than anything else. "Well this is out," he said as he showed me the broken tip of a black arrow head. Ebony arrows, I mouthed before looking up at the other male. "..and the wound is closed, honestly you should rest, I can get Karnwyr back on my own."
"I'm not going to rest," I replied shortly.
"Fine, don't rest, but I'm letting you out of our little deal princess," the male replied.
"I won't give up on finding your wolf," I replied. "Do I look like the type who would allow animals to be used, trapped or traded to you?"
"Is that a trick question princess?" the male asked sarcastically. "Fine, do whatever you like, but I'm not dragging your butt anywhere if you collapse again. And don't think for a second that I'm gunna treat you any differently then any other person I come across."
"I wouldn't," I replied standing again. It was better this time, no pain and I felt light almost like I could jump up and fly. Maybe I couldn't literally do that and I certainly wasn't going to make a fool of myself into front of… who is this guy even?
"So princess shall we get going?" he asked. I was finishing up getting dressed and lacing up my boots thankfully I wasn't still dressed as a stormcloak.
"So, when were you planning on telling me your name?" I asked.
"I thought I did princess," the male replied. "Oh that's right you collapsed as I was introducing myself. My names Bishop, can we skip the rest of the formalities and just go?"
"Yes," I replied shortly. Bishop obviously didn't care for remembering names of people he doesn't care about I assumed. Man has probably lived with animals his whole life, I sort of envy that about him. If I had the choice to live in the orphanage or the middle of the woods, I would have chosen the middle of the woods to be raised by wolves. Then again I could have been eaten by them as well. I frowned as I strapped my swords to the belt on my hips for easy access and tested my stance. Yeah, my muscles still remember, that alone should keep at least me alive. I just hoped this ranger, from the look of his outfit, knows how to shoot that fancy bow of his. I make a mental note of everything in my pack including the ingredients before heading out of the room. I looked back to make sure Bishop was close behind me, before heading through the crowd and out to the village edge. I frowned, we were still in Riverwood, I sighed before walking down the path that would take us away from Riverwood and toward Whiterun.
I opened the map for a brief moment making not of the road and what looked to be a shortcut through the woods and closed it as we came to the edge of a cliff. As I moved passed the cliff face to our a left a sudden movement caught my eye. I only had enough time to raise my arm before the wolf bit down on it easily biting through the cloth of the shirt I was wearing. I grunted and kicked it, it let go with a whimper and a lone arrow lobbed into it's heart dropping the wolf. I inspected the bite, it wasn't so bad so I shredded the remainder of the cloth and tied it tightly over the wound.
"Want me to take a look at that wound princess," the ranger asked. I growled at him before stalking off toward that shortcut I saw. We don't have the luxury of time to even think about dawdling for a small bite.
"It'll be fine until we get to whiterun," I grumbled. I had after all picked up a few herbs along the way and it shouldn't take much to get the missing ingredients for a good poultice for the minor wound. That and maybe some bandages, I paused to look back at the ranger. He was making short work of the fur pelt before he finally decided to catch up. Instead of saying anything he just gave a sort of half grin before I turned toward our destination once more. I jumped down a slope before I heard the sound of a loud crash of a very heavy sounding club. I pulled out my bow and rushed forward drawing an arrow from the Quiver, as I rounded the building I saw it. A huge giant, and I don't mean that figuratively this massive creature sported a shoddy fur loincloth and the trunk of a tree for a club. I shot the arrow which lodged into it's club arm before rushing forward slinging my bow as I did and pulling my blades to slice open it's back leg dropping it to one knee allowing one of the two-handed wielders to finish the creature off.
"You handle yourself well. You could make a decent Shield-Brother!" I turned to see a female huntress.
"What is a Shield-Brother, exactly?" I asked, I had never heard such a term.
"An outsider, eh? Never heard of the Companions?" she asked. I shook my head and she continued with her explanation. "An order of warriors. We are brothers and sisters in honor. And we show up to solve problems if the coin is good enough."
"So I could join the companions, then?" I asked skeptically.
"Not for me to say. You'll have to talk to Kodlak Whitemane up in Jorrvaskr. The old man's got a good sense for people. He can look in your eyes and tell your worth. If you go to him, good luck." she responded. It was then that I looked back to my frowning companion.
"Are you going to help every poor sap we run across on the road, princess?" He asked.
"No I just like a challenge," I responded before heading off toward the huge walled city that was in our view. I stopped at the stable to look over the horse, she was a lovely midnight color and quite tame. I stroked her muzzle as she sniffed me.
"She's for sale, one-thousand septims and she could be yours," a gruff voice said from the stable post beside me. I grinned, it was a bit out of my price range but I definitely would be coming back.
"If she's still here when I come back from my journey I'll consider it a deal," I nodded to the nord who just smiled and nodded back. I could tell she was a little older, but not by much and had a calm demeanor. I walked away and headed up toward the gate, I felt a little uneasy with all the guards around but tried not to let it get to me. Seriously what was I before I got to Skyrim a bandit? I just couldn't remember, I was interrupted from my thoughts by a guard that suddenly approached me.
"Halt! City's closed with the dragon's about, official business only," the guard said.
"I have news from Helgen about the dragon attacks," I replied.
"Fine but we'll be keeping an eye on you," the guard replied eyeing me suspiciously. It seems Skyrim is full of prejudiced people. I already can't stand the place and I haven't even been here that long. Not to mention the biting cold, maybe that is why they are so hard-hearted. Not that I cared, I don't need to know anything about these people. Still I couldn't get that deep voice out of my head. I passed the guard and headed into the city.
"Hey, you go on ahead I've got some business to take care of," Bishop suddenly spoke up as the gate closed behind us. "I'll meet you back at the inn and maybe we can get that drink you wanted."
"Fine, I'll meet you there," I couldn't help but be confused by the ranger's change in demeanor. Or the fact that he remembered I had wanted a drink. I inquired a guard about where I could find the Jarl and a good potions shop. He was as rough around the edges as the other guard, even made a fairly unfunny joke about receiving an arrow in the knee. I thought about telling him all the arrows I have taken to the knee but decided against it. He probably would think I am making fun of him, not that it matters. I took his directions to Arcadia's shop and stepped inside.
"Welcome to my shop. You'll find tonics, salves, poultices and potions on my shelves. Browse to your heart's content." the imperial woman behind the desk spoke as I closed the door behind me. "You have the nasty wound there, would you like me to look at it?" I paused and turned to her.
"I was going to see if you might have any ingredients but, I suppose it wouldn't hurt," I reply and walk over.
"So you're an alchemist then?" she asked. "I do have plenty of ingredient's. Let's get this looked at first shall we?" She removed the binding and looked it over. "You didn't even clean the wound, sit still for a moment while I gather a few things." She went into the back room and returned with a water basin and a cloth. She moved my arm over it and began to clean the wound, I flinched a bit at the stinging sensation and tried to relax when she began to apply a poultice before wrapping a bandage around my arm and securing it tightly in place with a skillful knot. "There that should feel better in no time. Let me get you a spare shirt." I was about to argue but she went to the back before I could. When she came back she had several shirts and even some trousers. "Here they were my husbands, he doesn't need them anymore."
"What happened?" I asked. She frowned but shook her head and didn't answer. It must have been something terrible.
"Feel free to you my alchemy table whenever you stop by," she replied. I set down the septum's I had collected on the counter. "Oh you don't need to pay me."
"I insist," I replied before placing the extra clothes in my pack and checking over my ingredients. I took out a few blue mountain flowers and butterfly wings and went to the alchemy table. Somehow I knew exactly what to do with them but I had no Idea how. Before too long I had created a couple more potions that I could use later on, when I am injured.
"You're pretty good at that," the feminine voice surprised me. I hadn't noticed her move up beside me, seems she was quite transfixed by my skill however as she couldn't help but stare at my potions. "That could put me out of business." I grinned but decided against saying too much.
"I don't plan to set up any shops, I'm just a lowly adventurer." I replied. I did pull out my journal and looked over it until I found the page I was looking for. "All I did was this," I showed her the page as I spoke and she took out a piece of charcoal and a paper to copy it down.
"Well thank you," she replied. "But why are you sharing this with me?"
"You helped me and one good turn deserves another," I replied before closing the journal and tucking it away and heading back out into the market. The sun was glaring from the horizon it would be getting late soon so I decided to hurry up to Dragonsreach to tell them the news. The huge castle was quite for foreboding when I arrived but that wasn't nearly as foreboding as the reception as I approached the Jarl.
"What is the meaning of this interruption? Jarl Balgruuf is not receiving visitors" The female Dark elf asked drawing her weapon.
"Gerdur sent me. Riverwood is in danger," I replied shortly.
"As housecarl, my job is to deal with all dangers that threaten the Jarl or his people. So you have my attention." she replied relaxing her stance. "Now, explain yourself."
"A dragon has destroyed Helgen," I explained.
"You know about Helgen" she asked surprised. "The Jarl will want to speak to you personally. Approach." I followed her up the stairs to stand before the Jarl. He looked like any other male I had run across but his voice was gentle and kind when he spoke.
"So. You were at Helgen? You saw the dragon with your own eyes?" he asked.
"The dragon destroyed Helgen. And last I saw it was heading this way," I replied.
"By Ysmir, Irileth was right!" He whispered before turning to his steward. I looked at the female Dark Elf and wondered if she was Irileth. "What do you say now, Proventus? Shall we continue to trust the strength of our walls? Against a dragon?"
"My lord, we should send troops to Riverwood at once. It's in the most immediate danger, if that dragon is lurking in the mountains..." the female dark elf spoke up.
"The Jarl of Falkreath will view that as a provocation! He'll assume we're preparing to join Ulfric's side and attack him." Proventus replied. He sounded like a cowardly man who had no will to fight in a war.
"Enough!" the Jarl yelled turning to the dark elf woman. "Irileth send a detachment to Riverwood at once."
"Yes, my Jarl." she replied heading out immediately.
"We should not..." Proventus tried again.
"I'll not stand idly by while a dragon burns my hold and slaughters my people!" The Jarl yelled now infuriated with the steward.
"If you'll excuse me, I'll return to my duties," The steward replied, sounding quite defeated.
"That would be best," the Jarl said calming down. He turned to me then and said, "Well done. You sought me out on your own initiative. You've done Whiterun a Service, and I won't forget it. Here take this as a small token of my esteem." He waved at one of the servants who approach with a piece of armor, it was a little heavy for me but I accepted it. "There us another thing you could do for me. Suitable for someone of your particular talents, perhaps. Come, let's go find Farengar, my court wizard. He's been looking into a matter related to these dragons and… rumors of dragons." I followed to him to a side room to my right. "Farengar is probably puttering around in his lab. Day and night. I'm not even sure if he ever sleeps." I grinned at that, sleeping is hard for me as well from what I could remember. Hard days in the wilderness will do that to you. "Farengar, I think I've found someone who can help you with your dragon project. Go ahead and fill him in."
"So the Jarl thinks you can be of use to me? Oh yes, he must be referring to my research into the Dragons." Farengar said looking a little lost in his own thoughts. "Yes, I could use someone to fetch something for me. Well when I say fetch, I really mean delve into a dangerous ruin in search of an ancient stone tablet that may or may not actually be there."
"All right," I responded already a bit annoyed. "Where am I going and what am I fetching?" I couldn't help but feel like I was being treated like a dog.
"Straight to the point, eh? No need for tedious hows and whys. I like that. Leave those details to your betters am I right?" I glared at him and noticed he squirmed a bit. "I, ah, learned of a certain stone tablet said to be housed in Bleak Falls Barrow, a 'Dragonstone,' said to contain a map of dragon burial sites. Go to Bleak Falls Barrow, find this tablet, no doubt interred in the main chamber, and bring it to me. Simplicity itself."
"Fine, but I have some things to take care of first," I replied.
"Okay just don't take too long," Farengar replied before going back to work.
"Wait," Jarl Balgruuf stopped me. "This is priority now. Anything we can use to fight this dragon, or dragons. We need it quickly. Before it's too late." I nodded, then thought about it.
"I have a friend who is looking for his wolf companion, have you heard anything about thieves caging wolves in the area?" I asked. The Jarl thought about it and nodded.
"I have heard of pit fights far to the east, if his companion was taken it would be quite the journey there," The Jarl replied. I pulled out my map and he pointed to a spot on it that suddenly lit up all on it's own. I frowned, that was unusual. "Quite a unique map there, is it magic?"
"I don't know, thank you, I will go and retrieve the dragonstone," I replied. Bishop isn't going to like what I have to tell him I'm sure.
