She didn't know why she kept going back to him.
Every time they met, in the grassy clearing in the woods behind Spence, she knew he wasn't thinking of her. He was imagining red hair and green eyes in the place of blond and gray. She grew inches in his mind, gained a little weight, lost muscle.
Somehow she didn't care.
And even though he was an Indian, forbidden, and in love with her best friend, she kept coming back to him.
She feared discovery, but he hoped that a particular girl would see them. Ever since that girl had rejected him and gotten herself a new love, one approved of by her father, brother and society in general, he had wanted to hurt that girl, however he could.
And she was just the one to help him.
The grass was tall, so they made a flat area where it wouldn't matter that they rolled around. Unlike the rest of the sweet-smelling forest, the circle forever stank of sex, lust and tainted memories.
She hadn't wanted to remember her father after he died in a curious accident that happened right after she returned from the Realms one day. She wanted to forget the touch of phantom lips, the caress of ghostly fingers.
He helped her to forget. That was all he was worth to her, but it was enough. Besides, it would take too much trouble to find someone else. He was willing, he didn't care that she was using him, and he was there.
So even though she knew he wasn't thinking of her even when she gasped his name in the dark, starry clearing, she kept coming back to him.
