A/N: This was surprisingly easy but at the same time frustrating to write. Most annoying thing was figuring out how the Konoha nin address Kairi since... Well, in Naruto about everyone is addressed by their first name. And after reading so many other mangas having some Japanese based characters address each other by first name is giving me hives.
Anyhow, here is the newest chapter. Starting with Kakashi's pov.
Chapter 13.
When Inoichi said her name, the girl didn't freeze. Didn't seem startled, didn't make a move to refute the claim or laugh at the outrageousness of it. She simply seemed resigned about the matter. Which… didn't sit well with Kakashi.
Namikaze Kairi. Gone by Fuukatsu thus far, several failed chuunin exams despite graduating early and on top of the class.
When Hayate had been attacked by one of the Sand genin, there had been at first denial. A genin taking out a special jonin, even one as disadvantaged as Hayate was… ridiculous.
But then there had been investigation. Kakashi himself had been busy with training Sasuke and worrying over what Shikako did to herself, so he hadn't been part of it… just knew Gai's gushing over the foreigner joining on the training nut's morning runs with Lee prior exams.
The whole village had been preparing for the Third Phase Tournament as well as speedy evacuation in preparation to whatever Sound and Sand had planned. There had been no need to Kakashi to be read in on the situation. The girl had been just one of the enemy soldiers about to attack. Someone to be eliminated or captured.
Until yesterday morning that was. After the funeral of the Third Hokage, Kakashi had received summons from the T&I, about observing a questioning of a captured enemy. The questioning itself would be on the next day but he needed to be read into the situation prior that. Inoichi, Shikaku and Jiraiya had been waiting for him – and he hadn't actually been late this time – at one of the debrief rooms. All three of them on their own were startling presence but together they made a worrying combination. Kakashi briefly considered something to have happened on the mission he'd sent his cute little genins on (and some of them might not be genins soon) but if that had been the case, Shikaku would have been much tenser and even angry at Kakashi.
Inoichi had begun explaining the capture of a saboteur causing massive structural damage in the village being successful. That the kunoichi was the same than the one attacking Hayate.
"That's not the worst… or rather most difficult matter about this…" The man had sighed, finally coming to the point why Kakashi of all people had been called even though he should be picking missions for the village and leaving right now.
"She is Minato's niece." Jiraiya had cut in bluntly. Kakashi had frozen. "There is no easy or gentle way to explain this but this is no false claim either." The Sannin had laid three wanted posters side by side on the table and pushed them in front of Kakashi. One of them was sensei's, the other two… were of two young men very similar to Minato. There were some differences in coloring and both of their hairstyles were much neater… not to mention that one of them wore Sand headband while other hand Rock headband.
"Many people think… especially of the younger generation that Minato was a Konoha-born orphan. That's not true even though massive record altering happened with his ascension to Hokage. The Namikaze family was from Land of Stone. When the Second War happened, the family fled to the great ninja countries. I met Shizue-san and Minato in a town west of the capital. Both were severely ill from going through Land of Rain and eventually Shizue-san passed away. Before she did though, she told me about rest of her family. About her husband Kishi-san and other two sons Kaito and Arashi." Jiraiya explained and ran a hand through his spiky mane. "I've been sitting on this since then, taking Minato to Konoha, and building the picture as I found more information about the rest of the Namikazes. I wanted to give it to Minato but he never asked anything and I was forced to conclude that his high fever back then, loss of mother and being introduced to new environment at such young age had caused him to forget."
"This kunoichi is Kaito's daughter then?" Kakashi found his voice, tapping the picture of the Sand nin.
"Yes, I confirmed as much when I ran into her two weeks ago." The sannin had nodded.
"Ah… I hoped to fly under radar a bit longer…" The girl – Kairi's – voice came from the speaker next to the window, snapping Kakashi back to the present. "Reclaiming my name on my own terms and all… Especially after witnessing the persona cult Konoha has built around your Yondaime."
There was nothing malicious in her tone, even if the words had been derisive. Just idle observation. It was weird… Looking at her, with the short hair that Yugao's attack had cut and not being able to unsee the connection. Same eyes though of different color, blonde locks framing the similarly shaped faces… Kakashi wished he didn't need to be here. Dealing with Naruto had been hard enough but at least the boy was obviously Kushina's son in behavior as well as features and also a lot younger than Kakashi had ever known Minato. This girl in the other hand… She was almost the same age than when Minato had first gotten in contact with Kakashi in the aftermath of Sakumo's death.
"We'd like to get your account on the invasion as well as anything you can provide about Orochimaru." Inoichi told the girl. As an approach it was strange considering that just 72 hours ago she'd been an enemy. But she was contradictory. She had dealt a lot of damage and killed Konoha's ninjas but at the same time she pulled her allies out of the fight and alerted them about something being really wrong about the fight between kages.
"Silken gloves while handling ghosts huh…" The girl hummed thoughtfully, catching onto the strangeness but not really mocking them for it. Really, she seemed disappointed at the perceived softness. Which wasn't surprising considering that she came from harsh conditions of Sand. "Did you find the scroll?"
"The scroll?"
"Yeah… standard size three, black ends, red edges, green middle. May or may not have kanji for 'four' in it somewhere… Didn't really have a chance to take a proper look…" The girl shrugged, face blank. "I mean… it did try to trap me with seals during the first twenty minutes of the fight… Then again, I got it from Kabuto. Should've known it was rigged."
Inoichi's shoulder stiffened minutely. He apparently knew about the scroll and its implications. Whatever the girl's words revealed to him now, didn't make him happy. Kakashi glanced at Genma sitting slouched next to him, eyes intently watching the girl. Apparently, he was the one the girl had interacted most out of the Konoha ninja and the one that had introduced her to Gai, thus his observations were needed as well.
"Do you know what scroll they're talking about?" Kakashi asked the brunet.
"You know the Impure World Ressurrection Jutsu that Orochimaru used to bring First and Second Hokages to fight? There were signs of a third summoning attempt as well. As there were corpses of two Sound ninja collected from the field… there was speculation as to who was going to be used for the third summoning."
"And now it seems it was that girl. And Orochimaru tried to summon Minato-sensei."
"Precisely." Genma nodded. "If she really was as much in contact with Kabuto and possibly the rest of the Sound forces as our investigation suggested, it could make tactical sense for her to be eliminated."
"And satisfy Orochimaru's sense of revenge."
Kakashi turned to look at the girl on the other side of the glass. Inoichi had continued asking questions about her movements within the village and… She had straightened up in the chair at them… Oh, that was a familiar expression. Narrowed eyes but not enough to crease forehead. Lips pursed in straight line but not enough to make them lose color. She wasn't pleased. Minato had had that face many times when dealing with something frustrating, especially unreasonable people who overly complicated things. Kakashi would've wagered the expression was aimed at Kabuto and Orochimaru but the conversation had temporally moved on from them. So what could it be?
"Has Inoichi mindwalked her yet?"
"Preliminary scans but he rather wants as much voluntary information as possible before attempting while she is awake."
"You're overthinking." The girl snapped. "I wanted to continue running and improve my speed, that's why I approached the stand-by station. I may have projected a more harmless image of myself while doing so but that's only natural in foreign environment. I talked Gaara down in Forest of Death because there was a danger of him going rampage and killing everyone present, including me. It had nothing to do with the Konoha genin."
There was a lie when she said 'nothing to do'. Inoichi caught onto that as well.
"Nothing? I don't think so. The fact that those three happen to be clan heirs now owing you really did not cross your mind?"
"…I wasn't close enough to determine their identities. I could see they were ridiculously young and I still remember the times when curfews were imposed upon us so we wouldn't get caught by rampaging Jinchuuriki when Kazekage-sama sent people to assassinate Gaara!" Okay, that was new information. While Konoha knew that the One-Tail's host was not the most stable and that the boy was Kazekage's son, they'd not known that the kage had sent assassins against the boy.
Speaking of jinchuuriki…
"You seemed to be plenty friendly with our jounins during the days leading up to the exams as well as during the month before the tournament." Inoichi changed tracks, leaving the girl unbalanced from her own outburst.
"So what? I know it might not be uniform but considering how weird you leaf-nin are, I was curious to see more." The blank nonchalant face was back.
"Ah, and being infiltration specialist must not have hurt either."
"Specialist? Don't make me laugh. Genins don't have specializations unless it's about weaponry."
Now, Kakashi may not have ever been a poster child of mental health but even he could see underlying issues in that bitter tone. Considering her exam history, it wouldn't be surprising if she'd faced scorn within village despite her actual skills.
Inoichi just kept her talking. It was interesting to see. While she might've chosen her words carefully on occasion, she generally didn't seem to care what she was revealing to them.
"Oh, please… I like ramen. If your genin can't keep their mouths shut on public places or pay attention to their surroundings, it's hardly my fault." She actually rolled her eyes at this point. Kakashi knew from the debrief that she'd been once at Ichiraku's at the same time with Naruto and Shikako. The mere thought had made his hackles rise despite the girl's now acknowledged blood relation to Minato. In a way, it made everything worse because if the occasion rose, she could potentially use the knowledge she had to manipulate Naruto. At the moment it was paranoia though since the girl had no way of know that Naruto was her cousin.
But the threat was there and Kakashi didn't like it.
"Besides, the food selection is incredibly vast here compared to Suna, of course I wanted to sample even though it severely drained my wallet. You Konohans might take it for granted to have many options to choose from but I certainly don't." The girl continued.
Genma chuckled. The man had probably ran into her during lunch times then.
Kairi was annoyed. The Konoha's T&I had made some ridiculous assumptions about her motives. While they had tracked her movements well and figured out stuff correctly, some leaps of logic were quite unfathomable. Moreover, the way she was being treated… There was no actual intimidation used. While she was stripped of her gear and anything else she could have used as a weapon and had no way of molding chakra because of the suppressant seals, she was still… Privileged might be the word used of this occasion.
"Konoha really likes their bloodlines…" Kairi thought idly, glancing at the mirror behind Inoichi and wondering who might be behind it. She did not know how long she'd been unconscious after her capture and she did not know if Suna was interested in negotiating for her return.
Mostly she was just bored and annoyed at the lack of information so she just answered Inoichi's questions in the hopes of fishing for any tid-bits possible. The man was really good though, sticking to the questions even though the abrupt changes of topics threw her sometimes. Otherwise though… Kairi had nothing to lose with giving her info about Kabuto and Konoha's defensive holes she'd observed…
"I mean seriously, the Hokage Mountain must be your most glaring defensive hole. No one spotted me setting up for flashbang bombing your academy and Hokage Tower…"
"Thank you, Namikaze-san, that's enough." Inoichi finally cut in. Kairi fell silent and gave a patient look at the man. The minute twitch on his expression told her she'd managed to imitate Minato-jisan again. Well, their fault for insisting calling her Namikaze and thus making the impression stronger in their minds. Kairi was still Fuukatsu, thank you very much and would remain so until her promotion.
"We're moving you to another room for proper mindwalking. Your permission for it is not necessary but preferable."
Kairi remained silent and swallowed. Though expected of Konoha she really did not like that idea. Especially if the Archive was discovered. She was not sure if the clearing with the tree bookshelves and the giant book were her actual mindscape and wasn't sure what exactly was there as she'd not had time to explore it…
"If it's not necessary, I won't be giving it then." She informed the man. Inoichi simply nodded and formed a seal. Kairi stiffened when she felt something crawling up from her wrists along her arms towards her chest and neck. Intellectually she knew they were probably the chakra suppression seals that functioned as restraints as well and would most likely knock her out for the transport. Subjectively though… Kairi could only think about the paperseals bursting from the scroll and trapping her. The crawling, pressing sensation…
"No… not again… I won't be used like that… I won't! Get them off me! Get them off!" Her voice was frozen in her throat. What could screaming would be in the middle of battle? No one would hear her.
She trashed in the chair, wanting the seals to go away. They were already at her throat!
Then everything when blissfully black.
Inoichi watched the panic on Kairi Namikaze's face when he activated the suppression seal's stunning function. It wouldn't do anything good for her to have an opportunity to map out the T&I's corridors. Enemy was still an enemy after all.
There had been resignation and some amusement on her face when she saw him making the activation gesture but as soon as the seal itself activated, it switched to horror. She trashed and twisted in an attempt to get free, eyes unfocused in her panic. She wasn't present anymore but being reminded of something else. Considering what Inoichi had found from her mind during the preliminary scans, the reaction was worrying.
The activation of the seal seemed to take forever but finally Kairi slumped forward in the chair.
The door to the interrogation room opened, revealing Genma and behind him Kakashi.
"Guess our observational duty is over now." The special jounin drawled.
"Yes, thank you very much. If there is anything of import to tell me now, please do so, otherwise leave a written report on my desk." Inoichi replied moving forward to untie the girl from the chair.
"Aside from the fact that she seems to consider us paranoid and soft? She is disturbingly alike to Yondaime, and not only in looks." Genma noted.
"If Jiraiya-sama hadn't given the information and her bloodwork coming back as distant relative, one would think she's Minato's daughter." Kakashi muttered. Inoichi agreed silently, the resemblance and age certainly matched. Except that Minato had been utterly smitten with Uzumaki Kushina already back then and would've never cheated on her. Not even in the middle of war and definitely not with a Sand nin.
Now it only left the question of what to do with her afterwards. And that depended on what was found from her mind.
Inochi lifted the girl on his shoulder and made to leave the room. Genma and Kakashi stepped aside and left. The Mind Reading Amplification Machine waited. Usually there probably would be no need to the usage of the device but they were pressed for time already. And who knew what traps would be found on Kairi's mind.
Kairi opened her eyes to the clearing again. She was lying on top of the giant representation of her family book.
And she wasn't alone. Inoichi was there as well, walking between the shelves, fingers skimming along the book spines. Kairi felt every time there was a brief stop as the man pulled a memory to be viewed. It was unpleasant, like someone digging a thumb at the base of her skull.
"You are not welcome here." Kairi spoke up. Inoichi turned, side-eyeing her but dismissing her in favor of yet another memory. Kairi glared at the man and slid off the book. Last time she'd not gotten the chance explore and she'd be damned if she let the Yamanaka rummage through everything before she could map this place.
"Did you know there are more memories here than your sixteen years of life worth? Those additional ones are not viewable though so I wonder what their function is." The man stated, reaching for next memory. Kairi's hand snapped out, enclosing around Inoichi's wrist, stopping the motion mere inch from the book spine.
"That's none of your business." She growled out, eyes narrowing. Inoichi looked down at her. "Like the saying goes… Once is a happenstance, twice is a coincidence, three times is an enemy action. I've tolerated you Yamanaka's twice already, thrice is too much. Get out!"
Inoichi finger twitched and touched the book before him. Kairi's eyes widened. The memory assaulted her. It was relatively recent, from the First Phase. She was sitting in her seat when Ino had used the Mind Body Switch on her. She glimpsed the forest clearing before being pushed back to her body.
"Sloppy… Very sloppy. Ino-chan…" She had muttered to herself.
Inoichi's eyes were intent on her.
"And how did you know it was her specifically?" The man asked.
"I heard her name when the Konoha rookies reunited before the first phase. There was no one else with classic Yamanaka looks in the room by the exam started so it wasn't that difficult of a leap to make." Kairi pressed her other hand against her mouth. She felt like hurling after the vivid and sudden reliving the memory but focused on keeping a hold on Inoichi's wrist instead. She would not let the vertigo put her down.
The mind-reader shook her off easily enough and went to look at even more recent memories. Hayate's attack, the dealings with Kabuto, the invasion. And Kairi… let him. She could not physically stop the man, since being in contact with him when a memory was viewed affected her so much.
She was only thankful that the memories apparently only showed what she said and not what she thought. Otherwise the Archive would've been discovered in a snap considering how much she relied on it to get background information on people.
So Kairi let Inoichi poke and prod at her memories. Shivering once more then the man viewed the memory of the Edo Tensei trap scroll opening.
Eventually the man left though, with no word to Kairi, just a slight acknowledging nod before he retreated.
"So?" Shikaku asked when Inoichi stepped into the jounin commander's office.
"She might not have realized herself but her interactions with Kabuto and rest of the Sand contingent revealed a lot about the preliminary invasion plans. She saw much more than she consciously observed." The Yamanaka laid a report on the investigation on the desk, among the other piles of documents. It was true. Kairi had provided maps and been responsible for information relay during the invasion itself (done mostly through her fox summons) but she had also had several plans within her line of sight in the preceding weeks for all that she hadn't been allowed to read them.
"And her status?" Shikaku picked up the report and started browsing through it.
"Not actively hostile. Needs to be kept under observation and questioning a bit longer before decision about her fate can be made but…"
"Once we have enough information about what she relayed to Sand and what she discovered about Orochimaru, we might be even able to let her go." The Jounin Commander concluded.
"Yes. Naturally, there will be complications and she might be harboring grudge about her treatment here… But ultimately… she is just resigned and wants everything done with."
"Sand hasn't demanded her release yet."
"They might believe her dead considering how many of them fell."
"There is still political value with her heritage, they might be asking for her body. The Fuukatsu are one of the prominent clans of Sand after all."
"And even if we were to keep her…"
"The council would demand either her imprisonment or house arrest and forced integration to Konoha with her chakra sealed." Shikaku frowned at the thought. Inoichi grimaced.
"We don't have the resources and a united enough front to succeed in that without civilian backlash."
It was true. Bar some differences in coloring, Kairi was still very much Minato-lookalike. It could grow dissent among shinobi and civilians alike. And after the invasion that was the last thing needed.
"I'll look into returning her to Sand, she has been cooperative enough and her body count is surprisingly small considering the amount of our ninja that she ran to." Shikaku sighed, closing the folder. Inoichi retreated from the office. There were some things he needed to be looking into as well. Namely the anomalies in the structure and contents of Kairi's mindscape.
Meanwhile at the Kaze no Kuni, Otokaze Koto's brother Keiki found the body of the Yondaime Kazekage as well as his bodyguards. A notice to Konoha about unconditional surrender was sent. Of course with most of the blame going to Orochimaru tricking them and some blame going to Konoha for producing a shinobi like Orochimaru. Elder Chiyo included an inquiry about the fate of Fuukatsu Kairi and wish to have her body at least returned to Sand. Just like Shikaku had predicted.
A/N: To conclude... It was decided that keeping Kairi imprisoned would be bigger headache than it was worth and after questioning her some more, she'd be let free. But more of that in the next chapter.
Here's the timeline so you won't be confused how this fits to DoS. Everything happens in May:
-20th Invasion happened.
-21st DoS chapter 39 clean-ups going on.
-22nd Third Hokage's funerals, Kakashi's debriefing.
-23rd Kairi's questioning, Kazekage's body found.
-24th Itachi arrives (though I don't touch that one.) DoS chapter 41-42
Thank you everyone for reviewing. I hope this chapter lived up to your expectations. I try to slow down the pace but if you hope for DoS-esque meandering, you'll be disappointed.
