A/N: I've had a serious lack of inspiration for short stories lately, been so busy trying to build my casefile up. So, most of my time and brain power has been poured into writing that. Bleh. Anyway, this is what came pouring out of my head while taking a break from overthinking my "en-process" story; just a quick character sketch. Enjoy!

She shifts uncomfortably in that red chair of hers, the cushion long since lost it's softness, now a mashed piece of fabric clinging to plywood. And she chews on her pen as she reads, the end of said pen already mangled by her constant gnawing. A few strands of that blond hair of hers falls across her eyes as her head dips lower to inspect the words on the page. Satisfied, she leans back and continues her scanning. Aware of every dotted "I" and crossed "T", as it were, she is completely oblivious to anything else around her. The constant chatter of her coworkers, the symphony of ringing phones and beeping fax machines, all drowned out by her intense focus on the dull black and white before her eyes.

He knows this. And this is why he takes these small windows of opportunity to just watch. The way she flicks the pen back and forth in her mouth with her tongue, the way she wriggles her nose when she's stumbled across a point of interest, the tiny lines that creep across her brow when these points of interest grow extra interesting.

Was it wrong? That he knew all her little quirks, knew the tiniest details about the way she moved, the way she spoke, and could tell exactly what emotion she felt by the lines in her face. He is one to notice details, details about everyone around him at any given time - it is was the great state of New York pays him for, after all. But, after so many years together, he seems to know more about this woman who sits approximately three feet away from him most of the day than anyone else.

Why? Why Alexandra Eames?

But he knows why.
