A Rainbow in the Snow

Once upon a time, high up in the mountains of Northern Europe, lived a young woman by the name of Aurora. She was the object of affection for every man in the village; yet she belonged only to Peter, the man to whom was betrothed and scheduled to wed in the next year.

But Peter and the rest of the men in the village weren't the only ones pining for Aurora's love. There was still one other; another, by the name of Eros, the god of love. Eros had been in love with Aurora since he had first laid eyes on her. He had known at that moment that he had to have her for his bride.

One day, as Eros was watching Aurora plan her wedding to Peter, he decided he could no longer spend his life without her. He wanted her to love him, and only him. He crafter a locket for her himself with the rarest of jewels and left it in a box on her bedside table with an anonymous note declaring his unending love for her a warning to never open it outdoors.

Aurora was so excited when she saw the beautiful locket that she threw it around her neck the moment she opened the box. Naturally, she had assumed it to be from Peter; but the moment she put it on all thoughts of her fiancé flew from Aurora's mind and were replaced with thoughts of her newfound love for Eros.

Later that evening when Peter came to meet Aurora she confessed for him her love for Eros. Peter was outraged, and tore the locket from Aurora's neck. She cried in agony as she collapsed down onto the snow, the heart shaped charm from the locket clutched in her hand.

Nightfall came and Aurora's body had been covered with snow, beautifully colored lights gracing the sky above where she had fallen. The people of the village looked on as they swore that they saw her face in the light. In fact, to this day people say that her spirit is forever embedded within the Aurora Borealis, the rainbow in the snow.
