Day 1 - Tentomon: Longing
Everything seemed so... empty. I didn't think it was possible to feel such thing until I went through it. I knew my adventures with the other seven children would be over eventually, but all I wanted was to be able to go back to the Digital World and see Tentomon again.
"Koushiro?" My mother knocked on my door gently. "Are you awake?"
"Yes, mom." I replied, still lying down on my bed. "Come in."
"How are you feeling, sweetie?" She spoke softly as she walked inside my bedroom.
"I miss Tentomon and the Digital World." I admitted, looking at her and giving her a small smile. "But I'll be fine, I promise."
"I wish there was a way to make things less painful for you." She sat on my bed. "I'm very sorry you had to say goodbye to each other. I know how much he means to you."
"I keep expecting him to come flying from the window, but I know he won't."
"Aww, darling." My mother sat closer to me and put her arms around me. "Wherever he is, I know he's thinking of you. I'm sure it's just a matter of time before you are reunited again."
"You think so?"
"Of course. Such a good friendship can't get lost like this. Everyone could see the strong connection you two had. That's very rare and should be cherished."
"So you don't think it's strange to be friends with a virtual animal?"
"Not at all." She looked at me. "He's not just a virtual animal to you. He's a very dear friend and I'm very glad you found him."
"Mom." I said in a tearful tone. "This means a lot coming from you."
"I have to admit I miss him too. I never got the chance to thank him for taking care of you and everything he did to you."
"Everything he did to me?"
"You may not have noticed, but you're a different boy now. It's a positive change and it makes me very happy."
"Mom!" I threw myself into her arms and hugged her. "I'm so sorry for disappearing without telling you."
"Disappearing? I don't remember that." She said in a light tone. "There's nothing to apologize for, sweetheart. You saved the world. I should be the one thanking you. In fact, I know just exactly what we should do."
"What?"
"Me and your father are taking you out for dinner."
"Mom, really, you don't have to. I don't want you to waste money on me."
"It's not a waste of money, Koushiro. We're going to celebrate and also spend some time together. And if you want, you can go to the arcade."
"Thank you, mom."
"No need to thank me." She gave me a smile. "I love you so much, sweetie."
"I love you too."
"Dinner is ready." She stood up and looked at me. "You don't have to eat right now if you don't want it. I'll put it on the oven when we finish."
"That's okay." I jumped out of my bed and walked to her, reaching out for her hand. "I'm starving, actually."
"I'm relieved to hear that. I was thinking you weren't eating that much and was worried about it. I bet Tentomon would be too, if he was here."
"He most certainly would. He would keep insisting I should eat more." I stated and then laughed.
.
Three years had gone by since the last time I saw Tentomon. I still missed him a lot, but relying on my friends made things less difficult. And there I was again. The Digital World was so different yet still the same. I couldn't believe I was actually back there after so long.
"Tentomon!" I called his name as soon as I saw him flying in my direction along with Piyomon, Patamon and Tailmon and ran to meet him. "I missed you so much."
"Koushiro, look at you! I missed you too. How have you been?"
I knelt down and hugged him tight. I could easily tell he was as surprised as I was. I didn't mind at all, though. I was just beyond happy to see my partner. "I've been good. What about you?"
"I've been good too." He pulled away and looked at me. "Have you been eating well? How's school going?"
I couldn't help but laugh at Tentomon being Tentomon. "I'm eating very well, don't worry. My mother always makes sure of that. And school is great. I'm actually the president of the Computer Club."
"Really? That's so great, Koushiro! I'm so happy for you!"
"Thanks, buddy."
The sun was already setting, which meant it was time for me to go home. I couldn't believe how fast time had gone by, but then again it always did when I was in the Digital World.
"I'm afraid I have to go. The time is still the same in both worlds."
"But now that we know the portal is open again, we can see each other more often."
"I know. I wish there was a way to take you back to Earth with me."
"I'm sure you'll figure something out. You're intelligent."
"Thank you, Tentomon."
"So how is…" He was interrupted by me kneeling down and giving him a tight hug. "Koushiro, what are you doing?"
"I'm hugging you. I thought I could try being more affectionate. Well, a little bit."
"Oh that makes me so emotional!" He exclaimed and started crying.
"Oh no, don't cry. Please."
"I never thought I'd say see day where you'd be more affectionate, even for a little."
"Don't be so dramatic." I couldn't help but laugh. "What were going to ask me again?"
"Oh, I was going to ask you how your mother is doing."
"She's doing great. She'll be happy to know you asked about her."
"I miss her. And her food."
"I'll make sure to tell her that." It was so typical of Tentomon to say these things. "If I didn't know any better, I'd say that she would ask me to bring you some food next time I come here."
"I would love that." He rubbed his stomach as if he was hungry.
"I'll make sure to bring some when I come back again."
"Great."
"So it was nice seeing you again, Tentomon. I hope you take care of yourself."
"Koushiro, why are you talking like we won't see each other again?"
"Because my digivice can't open the gate anymore and I have my own activities on Earth. But I promise I'll come here as much as I can."
"You better. Now let's go before it gets too late and your mother gets worried."
.
I had no idea how long it had been since I last slept. It probably was when Tentomon refused to get into the backup field I had made for him and the rest of our partners and got rebooted. That must have been… about three weeks ago. I've been working non-stop on a way to get their memories back non-stop since then. I had a feeling I looked like a zombie or something, and my suspicions were only confirmed when Mimi was startled after she came in and approached me.
"You look terrible." She said after she recovered from her shock. "How long has it been since you took some rest?"
"I don't have time to rest. I need to find a way to bring Tentomon's and the others' memories back. I just can't sleep."
"How will you be able to do that if you are so worn out?" She held my arm and tried to pull me away from the computer. "You need to sleep, Koushiro."
"Mimi, I need to focus on this. There has to be a way to get around it."
"There isn't. They lost all their memories the moment they were rebooted and we can't do nothing about it."
"You're wrong!" I snapped and dodged my arm away from her grasp. "There's gotta be a way around this. I'm sorry." I added when I saw her surprised expression.
"It's okay, don't worry about it." She said slowly. "But you're not the only one who misses your partner, you know? We all do. I miss Palmon so much it hurts."
"So let's go find them."
"What?"
"Let's go to the Digital World and find them."
"But, Koushiro, I'm not sure Taichi and the others want to. And honestly, I kind of understand their reasons."
"You just said you missed Palmon so much."
"That's true, but…"
"Let's do it." I insisted, grabbing her hands. "We'll convince the others to go as well."
"We'll talk about it later, okay? First you need to take some rest. Your mother is beyond worried with you. Besides, you need to be in very good health to meet Tentomon. He'd date to see you like this."
"Alright." I gave up, knowing that she had a really good point deep down. "I'll go get some sleep and then we're going to talk to Taichi."
"Okay."
"Did you hear that?" I suddenly looked over my shoulder towards the window.
"Hear what?"
"Tentomon is calling me."
"Okay, now you really need to get some rest. Let's go."
"I can't go, he's calling me."
"Koushiro, Tentomon is back in the Digital World. He's safe from the infection with the other ones."
"So let's go bring them back."
"We will, very soon."
"You promise?"
"Yes, I promise." She looked at me and smiled. "But first you have to promise me you will take care of yourself. That includes sleeping."
"I promise." I replied and sat on my bed, falling asleep the second I lied on it. "Good night, Mimi."
"Good night."
.
"I did it!" I leaned against my chair, feeling extremely relieved. After months doing some research, I finally found a way to bring Agumon, Gabumon and Piyomon back. I could barely hold my smile, thinking how happy and grateful Taichi, Yamato and Sora would be.
"So what are you going to do now?"
"Now I'm going to send a text to Yamato." I leaned towards my desk again and picked up my phone. "I want to make it a surprise, so I'm not gonna tell him anything that might give it away. I'll just tell him I need to talk to him and if he can come by."
"What about Taichi and Sora?"
"Well, Sora will find out soon when Yamato takes them home. Only then I'll tell Taichi. He's gonna be thrilled and shocked at first."
"Shouldn't you be testing it first, to see if it will work?" Tentomon asked with insecurity. "I really think we shouldn't get their hopes up for something that may not work."
"But it will work, trust me." I replied full of confidence. "But you're right, though. We should test it."
I pressed the enter button and immediately covered my eyes from the bright yellow light that came from my computer screen and got out of the way. When it was secure enough to return, the three Digimon were all standing in front of my desk, looking very confused.
"See? I told you it would work."
"It wouldn't hurt to make sure."
"Welcome back." I said with a grin and then I knelt down next to them. "Are you guys hungry?"
I couldn't help laughing when Agumon's stomach growled before he even said something. I wasn't surprised at all, he was hungry all the time.
"I think this is self-explanatory." Gabumon replied, feeling ashamed for his friend.
"Come on, let's go eat." Tentomon led them to the kitchen.
I stood up and looked through the window. The sun was setting outside and the golden tones mixed with orange, yellow and red made everything looked like a beautiful painting. I couldn't be prouder of myself for succeeding in bringing the three Digimon back. Over my desk, my phone buzzed. I went to check who had texted me and found it was from Yamato saying he was going to stop by very soon. The surprise would be revealed very soon. I shoved my phone in my pocket and headed to the kitchen.
"I see you are already enjoying your meals."
"It's really good!" Piyomon said excitedly. "When do I get to see Sora again?"
"Very soon, I promise." I sat down. "So I have a proposal to make."
"What is it?"
"Yamato is on his way here now. What if we make a surprise for him?"
"I'm in!" Gabumon quickly jumped into the idea. "What do we have to do?"
"You're going to hide in a room while I talk to him. When the time is right, I'll ask you to leave and join us."
"That sounds great!" The reptile Digimon said cheerfully. "Do we have to do it now?"
"Now, I think…" I was interrupted by the doorbell and looked over my shoulder before returning my attention to them. "I think so. It's probably Yamato, so go hide while I open the door."
"Alright!"
I waited a little while until they were settled and then went to answer the door.
.
I was focused on my work at my home office. Akemi was visiting her parents and I was going to take care of Megumi for the weekend. Then I heard a noise outside and rushed outside to see what was going on.
"Tentomon, is everything okay?"
"I'm sorry, Koushiro." He apologized to me and picked up a portrait that had fallen off as I walked into the room.
"What is going on here?"
"Megumi climbed out of her crib and started crawling all over the house and I accidentally hit that portrait when I tried to stop her from getting hurt."
"She did what?"
"She climbed out of her crib and started crawling around the house." His tone was a little panicky, as if I was going to call him out or something. "Hasn't she done that before?"
"No, where's she?"
"She's in the living room. I turned on the TV and now she's distracted watching a cartoon."
"Good. I'm going to check on her." I turned around to leave.
"Did we disturb you?"
"No, everything's fine. Don't worry about it."
When I walked into the living room, I found my daughter lying down on the floor with two pillows below her.
"Megumi?" I sat down beside her and couldn't help but laugh when she looked at me with an angry expression for interrupting her cartoon time.
"Koushiro, you still didn't realize your daughter doesn't like when people get her attention while she's watching TV?"
"I forgot. Akemi spends more time with her than me during the week." I looked at him. "Why are you wearing her apron?"
"I'm cleaning the house."
"Al…" I interrupted myself when I heard a noise coming from Megumi's room. "What was that?"
"I have no idea." Tentomon flew in the hall and landed in front of her door at the same time I arrived.
I carefully opened the door and looked around her room. Everything seemed normal to me until something in her chest of drawers.
"The Digitama… it's hatching, finally."
I picked it up and sat down on the armchair, rubbing the digitama to help it fully hatch. Megumi crawled in at the same time it cracked open and a Pabumon came out. She was so excited she let out a short scream.
"Look, sweetheart, it's your Digimon."
I bent down to pick her up in my arms. I placed her on my lap and she immediately leaned towards the baby Digimon, giving another scream when her tiny hands touched him.
"Looks like she already loves him."
"And I was thinking maybe she'd be afraid of him. Once again Megumi surprised me." I stared down at the newly duo interacting with a smile. I knew they were already best friends.
