"Rei?"
Sleepy and yawning, Rei Kon rolls onto his back. "What, Kai? I'm trying to sleep..."
A warm, strong arm is laid across his stomach. It's comforting. Rei smiles and closes his eyes again. He starts to doze, feeling safe and loved. "I love you."
"Love you too..." He murmurs back, turning back so that he's facing away from Kai. Not to be rude. He just likes to sleep on his right side. Somehow no other way works. Slim fingers wiggle down his back, making him shiver. "Tickles..." It happens again. "Kai...I'm tired..."
"Sorry." Even half asleep, Rei can tell that the apology is something less than sincere. "I like your back."
"Lovely..."
Rei is just dropping off again when Kai shifts right up close behind him. "I really love you, Rei..." Rei just sighs.
"I love you too. But I need to sleep." Kai falls silent. Then, seconds later:
"Rei?"
"-What-?"
"I..."
"What?"
"Nothing."
Rei sighs and shuts his eyes tightly, hoping that Kai is finished fussing for the night.
He knows he should be used to it by now. Every night, since they started sleeping together, Kai has stroked him and hugged him and professed his love. As if wanting him to be certain. Rei is sure it's just paranoia. Kai has that in oodles. He suspects Kai only tells him every night because he half expects him to be dead by the next morning. It's endearing somehow. And yet also annoying.
"Rei...you're beautiful...and I love you..."
"I know. And I love you too. Always."
Seemingly pacified, Kai settles beside him.
Rei drifts off to sleep, wondering if by tomorrow night Kai will still remember that always means always.
