Session Two: People
Detachment is how I view people. They are the most interesting things when they're observed at that angle. Well maybe not a detachment than a sideline view, but still people are fascinating in the fact that most of them don't realize that they're being moved around like pawns. The rest of them don't really care; they live day by day, moment by moment because they can't care in job like this. They live life like a poker game, always on the edge always taking a risk. They also happen to be smart and knowing when not to tempt Dame Fortune is always a plus. I have seen too many fools die that way. But I never said those people didn't happen to be stupid, either.
In this profession you cannot be attached to anyone. Emotion gets people killed is the silent rule among organized syndicates and it has been proven countless times. Lovers, friends, family, mutual enemies, every situation has been documented and passed down to me. Well, except, of course, those files purposely destroyed for any unutterable reason. But there is one case that I've pondered over more than once and I don't know why I keep coming back to it. When Mao was alive he constantly asked for this file trying to find some inscrutable detail about it.
The case was Spike Spiegel and the file was under "Missing or Presumed Dead".
When he died, or at least we thought he died, it was a real blow to those of us who knew him. He was amazingly resilient and even after being broken and battered he kept fighting. Some of us secretly referred to him as Fratboy Spike for all of the amazingly stupid stunts he pulled. I seriously thought he would come back after that fatal battle, that he would walk through my door with a crooked grin and smoke in my office no matter how many times I threatened him not to. I still have a strong feeling that Vicious' rise in power was the result of Spike's death and, as a good secretary, I have secretly taken up Mao's search for him.
There are too many questions that need to be answered.
