I genuinely had no intention of leaving the cliffhanger for three days. However the holidays hit and ya know. Anyways, I started writing another twilight fanfiction, however it's got elements from Chicago PD as well as The Shack. It's a solid fifteen on the stupid scale, and really, really, really awful. If you're interested and want to read it I'd be willing to post it. Or if you think my stuff is shit and don't even want it out on the internet... keep that to yourself thanks. Anways, here's an update, and Merry Christmas or whatever holiday you celebrate!
DANI
"SETH!" Nessie calls from behind her parents. She spins and takes off out the door, her chocolate brown hair flying behind her.
Rachel takes Mackenzie from me and I follow them outside.
Seth is lying in the grass outside with blood pouring out of his side.
His teeth are gritted in agony. "Nessie?" He gasps looking into his imprints eyes.
"Seth?" She whimpers holding his face in her hands. He's naked, but I don't care.
I kneel on Seth's other side as Jake shoves a pair of shorts onto Seth.
"Seth are you alright man?" Jake asks.
I shoot him a dirty look and Jake rephrases, running his hand through his hair. Now with attractively tussled hair that makes him so unfairly hot I struggle to breathe.
"Stupid question." I hiss for Jake. "Don't answer that. What happened?"
"I don't know." Seth gasps as Nessie holds his hand. I press my hand against the wound that's bleeding profusely. From where he's bleeding, down the length of his side, and the way the wound gets thicker the further forward it climbs on his body, the assailant attacked him from the ground, from behind, flying with her sword in her left hand.
"She was left handed." I whisper in shock.
"Seth was your attacker a woman?" I ask.
Seth nods. "She was dressed weirdly. Like… like… like in a really long dress. I couldn't smell her or see her face, it was covered by a black cloak."
"Oh hell." I whisper.
Seth takes a shuddering breath and shakes his head. "She got Paul and Jared."
Jake and I lock eyes.
"Oh Kensi is going to shit a brick when she hears this one." I murmur.
"When I hear what?" Kensi asks emerging from the woods. I raise my eyes to hers from across Emily's large back yard. I watch as Kensi's eyes widen to the size of dinner plates.
"HOLY FUCK!" She cries running at the speed of light to Seth's side.
"Scentlessness." I start. "Attacked from behind, down the side, started off thicker and shallow, got thinner and deeper. From the ground this time."
Kensi looks at me. "She'd had to have been left handed."
I nod. "Check the scar on Embry."
"I will, where is he?" Kensi asks.
"At home. Asleep." Jake says. "Just leave him be for a while, we can talk about it later."
"No we can't." Seth growls. "They got Paul and Jared."
Kensi's eyes widen in horror. "WHAT?!" She cries. "Paul! They got Paul!"
Seth nods. "Kensi I'm sorry. Dani, I tried to stop them. I was in the woods, running from my house to here when I felt Paul's pain. Jared briefly saw a woman in an eighteenth century dress, carrying a long golden sword wearing a hood. She disappeared and he couldn't find her, and then she was gone."
Kensi slowly sits down in the mud, tangling her fingers into her hair. Her knuckles are red, bloody and bruised. Her hair is wet and she smells salty. She went swimming, but on the way back got into a fight with a tree.
The weight of his words rests on me.
The bastard took Paul.
"Whoever took him, knew damn well they were kidnapping my brother." Kensi snarls. "They knew what they were doing when they went after Embry. They knew who they were fucking with when they fucked with Sam. They know who they are fucking with. They know what they're doing fucking with Seth. This bastard with pay." Kensi vows. "How bad is it?"
"It's healing." I answer keeping pressure against Seth's wound.
"He remembered!" Jake cries. "They wiped Embry's memories!"
"Son of a fucking mother fucking bitch." Kensi growls standing up. She sends a spinning kick into a tree and I hear the wood splinter under the contact. "That fucker knew!" She cries in outrage. Her bloody and dirty fingers lock into her black hair. "That fucker wants me to find her, and she wants me to fucking kill her! She targeted Seth knowing we'd figure her fucking ass out, and knowing I would hunt her down, and fuckin burn her, piece by fucking piece, over the next century, slowly, while keeping her alive!"
Edward and Bella share a glance as Kensi seethes. "That fucking bastard. I will murder her. I will hunt her down, and I will kill her. I am going to ash her."
"She's left handed." I remind her. "Left handed or ambidextrous."
"We can't be certain until we compare wounds on Embry." Jake points out.
Kensi shakes her head. "No. She used her right hand, holding her sword as a blunt object to take out Sam, and her left hand held the dagger, which she had to be careful about. She wouldn't have used her left hand for such a delicate task as putting someone an inch from their life if it wasn't her dominant hand. Same assailant, left handed. And I see the scar every damn day, Jake. I know which side it's on." Of course she would.
"Queen Marnie is right handed. I remember her making the comment about how her left hand is just a waste of space." I support.
"Colette is a fucking waste of useless ass space anyways." Kensi spits. "But she's always bragged about being able to fight with both hands. Mara is left handed."
"That's down to two." I say.
"It's not fucking good enough!" Kensi roars. "It's not close enough! And just because we know who did it, doesn't mean we know why they did it! Doesn't mean we know where they took them! It just means we know who did it!"
I sigh as Kensi shakes her head. "Fucking bullshit. I leave for two hours and the dumb bitch gets my brother and Jared. Fucking jackwagon!" She swears.
My lips part in shock. "Holy shit you're right, Kens."
"About what?" Kensi sneers.
"Whoever took Paul and Jared and attacked Seth was watching you. So she knew when she could take the wolves without your interference." I explain. "She knew the opportune moment to strike."
Kensi's face falls. "Oh fuck no." She hisses. "Fucking stalker ass motherfucking bitch!"
Kensi shakes her head. "I'm going to go see if any unsuspecting animal caught the scene. And I'm going to go blow off some steam. You take care of Seth?"
I nod. "Of course. This is almost healed anyways." I assure her lifting my hand off the wound.
A groan escapes Seth's lips.
"Where's Leah? Wouldn't she be spitting nails too?" Kensi asks.
"She's home asleep." Seth moans. "And let's keep it that way."
Kensi shrugs as a shudder runs up her spine. "I'm going now to see if I can track the bastard that took my brother."
She's to the edge of the yard, almost to the tree line, when Kensi unleashes a blood-curdling scream that makes my jaw drop. Her voice echoes through the trees as thunder rumbles and the sound of the surf can be heard crashing harshly against the beach. The wind blows fiercely for a few seconds and then Kensi explodes into a column of flames, so bright and brilliant that I wince.
It only takes seconds for them to die down and then she marches into the woods, furious.
"You wanted to know why vampires are afraid of her." Edward says dully. "That's why. She pulled that shit in front of Aro one time, and since then, he hasn't let any of his court around her without protection."
Jacob whistles quietly. "Embry is screwed."
KENSI
Tears fly off my face as I stop through the trees. I hate myself. I hate everything. Why!? Just why!? When things were finally fixing themselves between me and Paul, some dumb bitch has to go and take him away from me!
A sob creeps out of my throat and I kick another tree. My knuckles are bloody and bruised from the strength I hit the trees with.
I hate myself for everything. I couldn't move on and forgive Paul for shit, and now that he's gone, I've forgiven him and I can't even tell him that. Rachel, and oh my God, Paul's daughter!
Whoever took Paul has me to answer to and that's one unlucky motherfucker right there.
I need to know where Paul, Sam, and Jared are. I need to know why they are there and why they were taken. I need to know who took them. And why they took them. I need to know why an Elemental Guardian went rogue and kidnaped allies, werewolves have always been our allies! I need to know what member of the hierarchy went after a Guardian's mate; Colette and Mara both know damn well that Embry is mine. He's mine. They don't get to touch him. They can't, not while bound by law.
Far as I know, Mara is still bound by law.
I shake my head as I walk through the trees, fury rolling through me. I should've just forgiven Paul. But I just couldn't make myself do it. Why must I be such a hateful and vengeful person?
And what I've done to Embry. I've never been more disgusted with myself in my life. Truthfully, I never expected him to follow me into the woods. And so I started sneaking away to search. I didn't know he woke up! I assume he stayed asleep!
And hell, I catnap for about six hours during the day and I just put together that's when he goes on patrol.
No wonder he looks like hell. I feel terrible.
I've been terrible to him, and I keep trying to figure out how to dodge him so I can keep searching for Sam without wearing Embry out, but nothing's worked yet.
And I feel terrible for what happened to Paul. And Jared. I mean they both have fiancés, Rachel and Kim respectively, one of which already has a child! Paul is a father! So whomever the unlucky idiot is that kidnapped my brother, not only has me to answer to, but also the fury I'll hand to her from Rachel, leaving her to deal with a seven month old baby by herself.
My phone vibrates in my pocket and I unzip it. My cargo pants are a lovely creation. The zipper pockets are water proof, and open silently so you can go undetected. There are thousands of little pockets for ammo, knives and weapons.
I've been wearing these pants, along with the dark gray dry-fit tee shirt that's designed to go with them, that's very compatible with water and hot environments, allows to blend in with shadows well, enables flexibility and room during a fight, and allows for the movement of the straps for quivers and sheaths.
Anyways, I silently unzip these beautiful pockets and retrieve my phone.
You okay? From Embry.
I know that he can probably sense I'm upset through the imprint. But how is he going to play it off so that I don't get suspicious? I hesitate in my answer just to see how he answers.
The wind started blowing all of a sudden.
I take a deep breath shaking my head. I look around the forest surroundings and quickly change directions.
I'm in Embry's back yard in minutes.
I can see Embry pacing in his room staring at his phone from the seclusion of the forest.
I emerge from the trees and walk through the short grass silently.
I get to his window and he clearly didn't notice me yet.
"Can I see that scar?" I ask quietly.
Embry jumps and looks at me in shock.
"Kensi!?" He whisper shouts in shock.
I nod jumping up and grabbing the window frame, swinging into his bedroom.
"You know it's forty degrees out right? You are probably freezing your mother out."
Embry opens his mouth but closes it. "Close the door behind you then."
I offer him a mirthless smirk before closing the window.
I kick off my muddy boots standing on his carpeted floor in my polka-dot and rainbow socks, and uniform. It's quite a comical sight.
"What are you doing here?" Embry asks in shock.
"I'm not sure yet." I mutter looking at him. "I…" I look around outside in the woods. "I…"
"Kens?" Embry questions. "What happened?"
As if noticing the tear tracks for the first time he steps forward, cradling my face in one hand and wiping the tears away with the other. He forces me to look into his eyes but I can't.
"Whoever the sick bastard is that gave you this…" I trail off dragging my thumb over the pink scar on the side of his neck in his hairline. "Just gave Seth a scar to match, only it's down his right side from shoulder to iliac. It'll fade in a couple months like yours already is, but…"
"Kens." Embry says softly.
"They… she… she took Paul. And Jared.
Embry's mouth falls open.
"Jake told me you were supposed to be asleep so I was just going to see if I could track her down but I know it's useless. She's long gone already. And when I…"
Embry shakes his head. "You don't have to go on. I get it."
"I'm so sorry." I whisper shaking my head.
"Kensi there's nothing you could've done."
"Yes there is." I insist choking on another sob. "Yes there was. They attacked when I went for a swim. I got mad, lost control of my temper, left the woods, and that's when she decided to attack. She attacked when I wasn't out there to catch her. She was watching me Embry. I've never felt so violated, and creeped out."
Embry growls softly before closing his eyes.
"She watched me and Dani fight before capturing my brother."
"Sh." Embry whispers. He wraps me up into his arms, pressing my head to his chest. Butterflies threaten to fly off with my heart, but it feels so right to be in his arms. It feels so good to be this warm, almost uncomfortable with the immense and intense heat coming off Embry. But his strong arms holding me tight feels too right to ignore.
"Whoever did this is going to pay. I swear. She takes Sam from Emily, and hurts you. And then she takes my brother, from Dani and I, just as soon as I was starting to forgive him." My throat gets tight. "And then she took Paul from his family. Took Jared from his imprint. She's vial. And it's all even worse made by the fact that this is a betrayal by someone whom I previously trusted. Either Colette or Mara."
"It'll be alright. You promised Emily you'd find Sam. Now when you find Sam, Paul and Jared are sure to be there too." Embry's lips are warm against my ear, and his breath tickles the side of my neck.
"I just wish I could've told him I forgave him." I whimper into Embry's neck.
"You will." Embry assures. "Paul isn't dead yet. If they were taking him to kill him, they wouldn't have only wounded Seth and I. I've seen the kind of things that you Elemental Guardians can do. If they wanted all of us dead, they would've cut off our heads, Kensi. Not mortally wound us. Not kidnap us."
"So why kidnap them at all." I whimper.
"Ransom? Bait? Leverage?-"
"What did you say?" I ask stiffening.
"Leverage?"
"Before that." I order.
"Bait?" Embry asks.
I raise my eyes to Embry's. "Bait. It isn't leverage." I state. "Mara and Colette assume you imprinted on me, they would've taken you instead of Sam if they wanted to use me as leverage. And logic says that they wouldn't take Sam first just to mess with my head, or Dani's even. Usually when someone kidnaps someone for leverage, it isn't because they have time to play games. It's because they're in dire need of something.
"Leverage is out." Embry admits.
"Bait. If it's an Elemental Guardian, we have to assume they're baiting Dani or I for some reason. But why?" I ask quietly.
"I don't know but when we find the sick sadistic bastard…" Embry trails off.
"I'll kill them after digging through their brains, violently." I whimper. Embry quietly calms me down by running his warm fingers through my hair sending goosebumps up on my skin, and shivers down my spine.
"Embry?" I ask.
"Yeah?"
"I'm sorry." I whisper. "I… I feel kind of responsible for you looking like shit."
Embry snorts. "I don't recall you asking me to follow you into the woods, Kens. In fact I remember you being adamant about staying behind and sleeping half the time."
I laugh against his skin, resting my head against his shoulder.
Well this feels a lot more like 'friends with benefits' than 'friends.' Hell, I know I'm in love with him. But I don't believe what Dani is saying. Dani is just wrong.
Love is weak. And she can't convince me otherwise after an argument about love is what gave the Cloaked Capturer her window of opportunity.
Or maybe she is right. It was also an argument about how Anger is only a temporary fuel.
And my emotions are being driven by anger that stems from the loyalty and love of my brother.
And my overprotectiveness of Embry is currently stemming from my feelings for him.
Damn Dani to hell if she's right. All I have to say on the matter.
"You should get some rest." I say quietly. "That was an alpha order I'm assuming."
Embry winces and I smirk.
"So should you." Embry points out.
I smile. "While sleeping happens to be one of my favorite pastimes right next to kicking ass and taking names, I need far less of it than you do."
Embry shakes his head. "But you still get tired?" He's befuddled.
"Yes. Exactly." I say with a smirk.
He shakes his head. "I can't believe you snuck in my bedroom window. Wolves are usually the ones sneaking into their imprints' windows, not the other way around."
I snort while my mind screams: HE JUST TOLD YOU THAT YOU'RE HIS IMPRINT!!!!! Instead I answer: "We break the rules, Em."
Embry pauses, his eyes cutting to the side. He opens his mouth to say something, and I know it's got something to do with his half-assed confession. I can't have this conversation yet. I just can't. My regret over not telling Paul how I feel flashes through me, but what I have with Embry feels different.
I know how he feels, it's undeniable that I feel the same way. However I can't afford the distraction that is Embry, right now with his hair tussled with sleep, and a slightly sexy and smoky morning voice after a short nap he took, and the ridges of his muscles prominent against my soft skin, it's undeniable that he's also a distraction. One I can't afford if I want to be on top of my game.
"Sleep, dumbass." I mutter. "I'll even stay with you if you want me to. It's not like I'm going to find anything out there in the woods aside from a trail to the road where the wolves were loaded into vans."
Embry's eyes sparkle with relief and something else. "Admit it. You're tired too."
"Sure." I muse. I really, really, really feel a hell of a lot better after Embry held me for a while, I'm sure we'll both feel better. And I kind of just don't want to let him out of my sight after my brother just disappeared.
"You want to sleep in that or would you rather me steal something of my mom's?" Embry asks.
"One of your t-shirts will work fine." I answer with a smirk. Embry's lips part before he nods. "I'm already wearing shorts."
"Got it." Embry answers handing me one of the t-shirts on a pile on top of his dresser. I step into his closet – very clean for a 19 year old boy – and take off my pants to the running shorts underneath, and pull on his shirt. I am positively swimming in the blue tee shirt he got from an Eric Church concert.
Embry is already half asleep after one minute. I toss my clothes onto my boots and lie down beside him, ducking under his arm. I watch his eyes open in surprise, and I just smile.
Friends be damned. I know where we're going. I can't run from it. Embry has already snared me.
