Sup y'all! Got another chapter. I intended to upload Friday, got slammed with the stomach flu and it didn't happen... I'm making it a goal to post at least once a week. I'm making it! Kind of! Anyways, read and review!
KENSI
"Whores don't get cold." I remind myself firmly as a shiver races up my spine.
The massive structure in the heart of Seattle that serves as the Elemental Guard's HQ is a very chilly place in the middle of October. Now don't get me wrong, I don't get cold. But Dani thinks its got something to do with the imprint, the imprint she's convinced I'm ignoring because I'm afraid.
She's right but still.
I finally muster the courage to unlock the door and get out.
"I'm telling you." Dani teases. "Jump the man and your problem will be solved."
I glare at my sister as I fasten my belt around my waist, the dagger dangling against my hip. It's a unique touch to this outfit.
I feel like a hooker though. Dressed like an actual hooker. Look like a hooker.
I have no come-back for it. I can't lie and say that I am not incredibly attracted to Embry. There's no avoiding that the man is six, almost seven, feet of pure sex. And sexy as hell.
Can't lie and say that thought hasn't crossed my mind either.
I walk up the front steps, wary of where I'm stepping to avoid the sharp stones that might cause me to trip. Dani and I take the stairs, walking past the packs of werewolves. Wolf whistles and cat calls sound from behind us but I just flip the bird to the audience.
I'm taken. And most of them are too. But Children of the Moon are notorious for the polygamy. And I am not about having more than one partner at once. Not that Embry is my partner, but why would I involve myself with some sniveling little fucks when I have a wolf.
Soon as Embry mans up and talks to me about it. And I man up and let him.
I shake my head and hold the door for Dani. The hallway to the throne room is an arduous journey through tables and recreational areas with Elemental Guardians who work and live here, as well as their friends, male counterparts, or lovers. Any of those being either human males or Children of the Moon males.
And of course, the Children of the Moon have no grievances against shamelessly staring.
"Glad you still smell like sex and Jake." I say quietly. "Your shapeshifter boyfriend can kick all these wolfy asses here."
Dani blushes bright red as I watch several of the real and actual werewolves turn away at the mention of the shape-shifting spirit warriors of La Push. Werewolves are restricted from La Push and the surrounding areas because of the Quileute wolves. And the spirit warriors are a hell of a lot stronger and bigger than these wolves are.
"Girls!" Queen Marnie crows from her throne. Dani and I greet her with a formal bow.
"What brings you here?" Marnie asks.
I look between her lieutenant and her captain.
"I don't know which one of you two fucks did it." I start looking between Colette and Mara, "But when I find you, just know, I am going to leave you be in a pile of ashes."
Marine's eyes widen in shock as she gasps in horror. Colette's hand flies to her chest and her eyes widen. While Mara's eyes widen in… fear.
"A little over a month ago Samuel Uley was abducted from La Push while on patrol. The only evidence of the kidnaper was a scentless trail, and the fact that his patrol partner had no memories upon recollection. Furthermore, Samuel Uley was subdued by blunt force trauma, and oxygen deprivation, while his partner was subdued by a potentially lethal blow to the neck and oxygen deprivation." I explain and Dani continues.
"Oxygen Deprivation is only a skill that we Elementals know how to use obviously. Not to mention this, but it takes a seriously skilled warrior to sneak up on those two wolves. Furthermore, the scentless trail narrows the pool down to Queen Marnie, Lieutenant Mara, or Captain Colette."
Dani nods to Queen Marnie, being the gentler twin, with another bow. "However the assailant struck again, and this time proved herself to be left-handed following an attack on Seth Clearwater. Blade in her left hand. The attack on Embry required precision so that he didn't die upon impact, again, done with the left hand while the right subdued Sam. Therefore, Queen Marnie is not in question."
I flick my eyes to Colette and Mara. "So whichever you two fuckers thought that was funny, I will kill you. You have violated an age-old treaty that we have with werewolves of all kinds, and the very special one we hold with the spirit warriors."
I raise my eyes to Queen Marnie. "One of your guards, ma'am, is up to something. Capturing of wolves is very illegal."
"It is." Marnie says slowly looking between Colette and Mara.
"Whoever did it knew that Embry imprinted on me too." I point out. "Because when they realized just who they fatally attacked and almost killed, immediately apologized and told his unconscious form that his mate was going to kill him." I snarl.
"And seeing as how Kensi is the notorious killer, I know that neither of you assumed I would kill you no matter how close you beat my lover to the edge of his life." Dani's voice rings out over Queen Marnie, Lieutenant Mara, and Captain Colette.
My eyes land on Mara, who's skin is as pale as a bedsheet. There's terror clear in her eyes.
"I can smell my brother on you, whichever one of you has him." I announce. "And if you didn't already know, Paul is a father."
Mara's eyes widen as Colette rounds on her. "You fucker." Colette snarls. "I know I sure as hell didn't take her brother, especially someone with a child."
Mara's eyes widen. "Come on Colette. Why would I take werewolves? That makes no sense."
"It makes even less sense for me to take someone's father, Mara!" Colette snarls. "Especially after my father was absent his entire life! Having an absent father is a hell of a lot more different now than it was back then!"
And I know she's got a point there.
"You're the one accusing me!" Mara snarls.
"Because I know it ain't me." Colette snarls. "And when enough evidence comes to light to convict you, I will be helping Kensi assassinate you."
Mara's eyes widen.
"Queen please, you have to trust me. I wouldn't do this. I have no reason to."
"Other than the fact that we haven't seen Devan in months." Colette snarls. "Who knows where he is?"
My eyes widen and I look at Dani.
"Who would even use Devan against me!" Mara screeches. Her voice is frail and high, very defensive. "That's disgusting!"
"I think of a few people who know how powerful you can be." I snarl stepping forward. "I can think of plenty of people who know this and who also know my proximity with the wolves."
Mara swallows hard. "You're all crazy! This isn't fair! I would never betray you like this Kensi!"
"You're a liar!" I snap walking forward. My eyes blaze with hatred as Colette shoves her down the steps. I can feel Dani's feeble attempt at slowing my role, her rough hand on my elbow as she attempts to grab me.
I grab Mara by the front of her jacket and glare at her, about to kill her when someone clears their throat behind me.
"I hear that you have a bit of a vampire army problem?"
I turn around to see the Volturi behind me.
I growl and throw Mara on the ground. "Fuck the hell off Aro! I am not in the fucking mood!"
Aro glares at me. "We are offering you our assistance. Rumor has it the vampire army has reached numbers of 140. And with Tift and his entire family out for blood against you and your family, Kensi and Dani, we assumed that the Elementals would gladly accept our help."
I connect the dots in my head in that moment.
"Tift." I snarl looking down at Mara. "That's who is paying you isn't he? He kidnaped Devan, and is using Devan against you. He wants you to collect the wolves so they're out of the way when he comes after Dani and I, to kill us."
Mara shakes her head. "I don't-"
"While also using the wolves as bait to lure Dani and I right to them!"
"Kensi-" Mara chokes. I rest her against the tiled ground and constrict her air supply.
"And then they'll use Paul against Dani and I to keep us in line, just like they're using Devan to keep you in line!" I snarl.
"Kensi- No!"
I loosen the grip on her neck and force myself into her head. Mara's pained scream echoes through the hall as the Volturi watch in horror.
Conversations with a woman of identical stature and features with glowing red eyes looks at Mara.
I listen in horror to their conversations, feeling the weight of it all hit me.
Mara uses my shock to shove me backwards before fleeing from the room.
No one goes after her as everyone looks at me expectantly.
"Micah is alive." I whisper to Colette and Queen Marnie. "Mara hid Micah all her life from the Elemental Guard. And now Micah has turned on her. Micah allied herself with Tift, an old flame apparently."
I look at Dani. "Plan A is to capture all the wolves and lure us to their facility wherever that is here in Seattle, and then use the Army to kill us off. Plan B is to take the army to kill us, if we don't go after the wolves."
Dani shakes her head. "They're targeting the wolves to get to us." Her voice is nothing more than a whisper as the entire theater hall goes silent.
"Your offer to help is appreciated by Aro." Queen Marnie says. "Make no mistake. However this is something we will handle in-house."
Aro smiles almost in disappointment. "The Volturi has a location for the army, and we plan to strike it."
"Fine." Marnie says.
I raise my eyes to Aro's. I make them as cold and dark as possible, watching the penetrating gaze make him flinch. "Aro if you stumble upon the wolves, they are to be delivered right here, to this building. If I find out that you killed any one of them, I will kill you."
Aro's eyes flicker and his posture changes.
"You and whoever else was there and didn't stop you." My threat carries more weight as thunder crashes outside, officially sealing the vow.
Aro nods finally. "If the wolves are being kept at our strike location, they will be delivered back to the Elemental Guardians. But you said the wolves are in Seattle correct? This army is in Canada."
I nod. "Nonetheless, Aro, we are in agreement?"
Aro nods before him and the Volturi are gone in seconds. Gone just like Mara, fleeing in fear.
SAM
Mara comes into the warehouse slamming the door behind her. The sudden movement wakes Paul and Jared up, causing Jared to bump into the fence. Naturally after having this happen several times, the pain that accompanies electrocution is as familiar as an old friend.
But it doesn't nullify the howl of agony that Jared releases as pure, raw power thrums through his veins.
"She's onto us!" Mara hollers. Her sister sits at her desk in the loft, flipping through volumes of notes she's taken over 300 hundred years. But many of these new notes are notes she's taken on her observations over us.
The cheap bitch has been studying us like we're lab specimens in a maze.
"Who is she?" Micah asks with an irritated tone of her voice.
"KENSI!" Mara cries. "Kensi is on to us!"
"Us specifically or just you?" Micah asks. "Because if she were on to us, you would be a pile of ashes and so would I. Because Kensi is a very strict goody two shoes."
I growl at Micah. She has no right to speak of my brother's imprint like this.
And my fucking sister! Paul snarls. His howl of fury translates clearly.
"Watch your tone, Micah." Mara warns. "I don't know the limits of that fence."
"And what are they going to do?" Micah laughs. "They're all emaciated anyways."
Well that's a valid point. Jared retorts. The sketchy things I'd do for Emily's cooking.
I snarl at Jared, not because he can help his thoughts, but because of the mention of Emily. It's been approximately 41 days, and it's the middle of November. I need my imprint desperately.
Hey, I know you've been here a hell of a lot longer, Sam, but I miss my sisters, daughter, and my fiancé as much as you miss your wife. Paul growls at me. As your friend, kindly, fuck off about it.
Jared rumbles in agreement. Talking about them helps, Sam. It makes it hurt less.
Mara throws something at Micah. "And if they broke out I'd let them eat you! Hell I'd set you on fire! I won't stop them!"
Micah laughs. "But for as long as I have your boyfriend, you are but a mere puppet on my string."
Mara snarls at her sister and I can't help but glance over at the kennel on my other side to the man beside me. Mara is head over heels in love with him, but there's nothing she can do as long as her sister has him in captivity. From what I've gathered, he's a detective that works for the Seattle Police Department.
The man in question, Devan, scoffs from behind me and I whine. Micah is going to beat his ass.
"And what happens when this Kensi character finds you, Mar?" He asks.
Mara looks at Devan imploringly. "You see the gray wolf over there?"
Devan looks over at Paul and nods.
"That's Kensi's brother. She has a twin too, but Kensi is the real terror. She finds out that I took her brother, she will kill me."
Mara grabs the chain link fence and stretches her arm through the holes. She's in control of the electrical current, making sure that her lover isn't electrocuted in the process.
Slowly Devan's fingers wrap around Mara's. "I didn't sign up for this Mara." He whispers.
"I know. I'm sorry." She whispers. "But look, at least you'll be free of me when this is all over."
Devan, for the first time doesn't seem opposed. He only winces at the pain in Mara's voice. She's in agony with the very thought of not being able to see her lover. Of Devan not being hers.
"I'm a cop, Mar." Devan scoffs. "I can accept that you broke the rules and have to pay the consequences. And in this world you live in I'm not surprised that the consequence is death. Harboring a vampire, Mara, is a hell of a lot worse than possession and distribution of controlled substances."
I scoff. This guy I like.
"Either way," Mara says. "Whether Kensi lets me live or not, we are done."
She looks at Devan expectantly but he doesn't comment.
Finally he raises his angry eyes to hers. "Did you want me to argue? I'm not. I've been to Iraq twice, was a sniper, FBI for a few years and now work Intelligence here in Seattle. Not once was I ever captured. I start dating the wrong chick and shit goes to hell in a handbasket."
Damn. Paul whispers inside our heads. He can almost contend with Kensi's temper. Almost.
Jared snorts. Embry has competition.
Paul snarls. My sister? With this? I think Devan has learned his lesson and will forever leave the supernatural and paranormal world alone.
Jared and I stare at Paul in shock.
What?! Paul snarls at us. I just barely accepted the fact that Dani isn't a virgin because of Jake now, and Kensi will eventually lose hers to Embry too."
I wince at this. Um Paul. I start with hesitation. Pretty sure Kensi lost her v-card already. Embry was patrolling around their house months ago and overheard it.
Paul glares at me before shunning Jared and I from his mind.
"Step away Mara. Devan might not smell like the tastiest snack but I won't hesitate to drain him dry in front of you." Micah threatens.
"You know Kensi did save your ass though." Mara says suddenly. "The Volturi showed up to their conference. Wanted to know what we knew about the army."
Micah looks on in shock.
"I told them the honest truth. 140 soldiers that we've found so far." Mara says.
"Because you were afraid of Jane?" Micah growls.
"Because I didn't want Aro demanding to see into my head and find more than just the total number of deaths we'd found. Of course Marnie and Colette were surprised I knew."
"So you made yourself suspicious to everyone!" Micah explodes.
"In case you missed it, Devan wants nothing to do with me anymore." Mara says. There's pain between her eyebrows. "So I'm finding it increasingly difficult to let you use me by threatening Devan. I want Kensi to find me. I want her to kill me for what I did to her mate, and for what I'm going to do to him later. For capturing her brother. I want her to follow the trail of breadcrumbs I left so that she finds you and kills you!"
"Mara!" Micah calls. "Please!"
"No!" Mara cries. Tears well up in her eyes and yet I feel no sympathy for her. "You were the worst mistake I've ever made." She whispers. Micah reels back as if slapped. "When you were first turned, I wanted to protect you, but I was stupid to trust that you could be the same person you were before you were changed. I lied to everyone for you, Micah! And you turned out to be some crazy psychotic parasite!!"
"I've risked my job, my life, and my friendships for you. And now the only way out is to come clean. Which means my death. Especially after the very illegal things you made me do."
"I just have one more job for you." Micah says quietly. "And then I'll let Devan go."
"What?" Mara snarls.
"Bring me the mates of your twins you fear so much." Micah's voice is demanding.
Jake and Embry. Jared whispers.
No! Paul growls. NO! She can't!
I sigh grimly. She will!
"No. Micah please. Kensi is going to kill me no matter what, but if I capture her boyfriend, she'll kill me!" Mara pleads desperately.
"No, you fool!" Micah hollers. "Capture for me the twins' mates and I will be able to manipulate them just as I manipulate you now!"
Micah's shrill and evil voice makes my ears rings as she unfolds her truly evil plot.
"We have their brother, Micah!" Mara pleads.
"Oh please. Paul abandoned them! Kicked them onto the curb! Do you think for a minute this cold, coal-hearted Kensi you fear so much would bend to our will when you threaten her blood? Kensi's fury runs thicker than blood."
"Oh hell no." Mara whispers. "Those girls won't be conned like this!"
"They will." Micah promises. "When they see their boys in danger because of them, I promise you, they will buckle before me and you, Mara, will have the honor of slaying both of them."
"I respect Kensi and Dani! I don't want them dead!" Mara cries.
"You're knicker-deep in alligators already Mara." Micah reminds. "Give in. It's you or Kensi."
Mara looks behind her at Devan. Her face is tortured and I realize she truly loves him, but Devan is smart enough to realize she's not worth the trouble. Over the past few months, it's something he's learned very well.
"I refuse to let Devan live this life with me." Mara whispers so only her sister can hear. "And if that be the case, then I have nothing left to live for. My lies will be exposed by Kensi. She will win. And she will kill me."
Mara lowers her voice before glaring at her sister. "And I hope she lets me live long enough to see her kill you first."
Mara casts a sorrowful look before marching out the door.
And the full weight of the truly twisted plot hits me.
Capture Embry and Jake so that Micah has the upper hand on Kensi and Dani.
The whole point of the army is revenge on Kensi and Dani.
We're here as bait and leverage so Micah can make the twins do whatever they want.
I share a look with Jared and Paul knowing they heard me.
Oh are we in deep shit.
