"Are you sick or something?"
"This is how I normally look."
Anton betrayed no emotion as he narrowed his pink eyes at Bakugo. After Megan's encounter, he felt confident enough in his and his pathogen's powers to take on the Pro-Hero. They would have to be quick, but they were certain they could get him to at least move out of the circle.
The rest of the class as a whole were in higher spirits. Defeating Bakugo, even if it was just at this game, made people want to discuss legitimate strategy.
"I think I needed to use 'Mississippi Queen' instead," Abel said. He had been wheeled back a few minutes after going to the medical ward. Seated in a wheelchair, a few bandages had been wrapped around his midsection over his shirt. He rocked sideways in his wheelchair as he spun around the room.
He was a little embarrassed at what had just transpired. He knew Bakugo was not somebody he would beat, but he thought his strategy was good. In hindsight, it was the dumbest and most basic strategy he could have imagined. He was careless, and that was the last thing he wanted.
Careless heroes led to careless mistakes. Those led to careless accidents.
Abel blinked and shook his head. No, he could not think about that. Not right now. This was the reason he came to this school, so he could avoid thinking about that accident. So he could make sure he avoided anything like that in his hero work.
So he could show that careless Pro-Hero that mistakes kill people. Like his best friend.
Suddenly, a flick on his ear broke his train of thought.
"I think you need better headphones," Megan said as she tapped the headphones around Abel's neck. "Maybe some one's with bass boosters."
"That totally reminds me of this one time where I snuck into a nightclub!" A french-accented voice chirped.
Popping in between Abel's chair and Megan like an old cartoon character, a shorter kid with a wide smile looked up at Megan. His ebony hair, covering his ears, was tangled up as if he had tried to style it with a blow drier and failed. His giant grey eyes twinkled as he hopped up and down on his tiptoes. They seemed bright, excited, but just a bit on the creepy side to Megan.
She flinched and hopped back a step. Examining the boy, he seemed to have slept in his uniform as wrinkles criss-crossed the dark blue fabric like crop circles in a wheat field.
"Who are y-."
"Blake Marseilles, that's my name!" The boy said in a rushed tone akin to a skilled rapper. "I know your name is Megan, but that's because I eavesdropped on you and this guy in the wheelchair at the Opening Ceremony. I'm French, by the way. You don't have to worry about me, though. I love the Brits! They're very funny people."
Megan made a sound as she put a hand over her chest. Not only was she barely able to keep up with what this boy was saying (his gross, frog accent did not help), but she was pretty certain he just insulted her. "Funny?"
"Yeah, you guys are hilarious," Blake said. He whipped himself around to face Abel. "By the way, it was so cool how you got punched by Ground Zero! Or, should we just call him Bakugo? Anyway, there was this one time where I snuck into a nightclub over the summer in Paris. I actually don't live in France, I live in New York. But I still sound and speak just like I live there. Isn't that weird how that can happen? How your parents can make you sound basically like whatever? It reminds me of this one time when I was in New York, and I came across this guy. He was weird, but that doesn't matter. He was white as the snow outside, but had a strange accent even though he had lived there his whole life. Turns out he was adopted by Chinese parents! Isn't that hilarious. Anyway, I snuck into this nightclub, and I came across the hero. Not a big time guy, although I actually met Eraserhead a few years ago on a trip to Japan. I mean, it was because of my parents, so I didn't have much time to say hello. He seemed like a cool guy, though. I like how his eyes get all weird when he does his thing with the quirk. You know that thing, right? So back to the nightclub, I snuck in-."
Just as Megan thought she was going to die from the barrage of words, she felt a tap on her shoulder.
"Look." Austin said as he gestured towards the arena floor. "They're starting down there."
Blake hopped in the air in excitement as he flung himself into a chair. "Yes! This is gonna be great. Nobody breathe, nobody talk! The fireworks are starting."
Megan turned to Austin and mouthed a quick "thank you." Austin nodded in a stoic fashion.
Down at the arena floor, Anton stretched out his thin fingers like a gunslinger ready to shoot. He was tired of being looked at as a werido, the runt of the litter. All of that began to change today with the first step into becoming a Pro-Hero. His chest tightened while his nerves were drizzled in a cold sweat of anxiety.
About time you let me out. I thought I was gonna have to eat some of your brain cells.
"And then you wouldn't have a body, would you?"
He has a fire quirk, so we gotta avoid that when it happens.
"You can zip around the flames," Anton said. The voice helped as he pushed aside his doubt. He could defeat Bakugo, and he was ready to show that he was somebody to be feared in the class.
He'll surround himself. I can't get to him if he's a ball of fire.
"Then use your laser form instead of your cloud one," Anton said softly as he peered at Bakugo.
You read my mind. Or maybe I read yours. Then again, your mind isn't that hard to predict.
"Begin!"
Ready, boss?
Anton shoved his hand into his pockets and whipped out a small switchblade. Flicking it open, he took the sharp end and dug it into his green skin.
"Whoa! That's hardcore," Katsu said up in the spectator's box.
The rest of the class grimaced as the boy drew a line down across his arm. Beads of blood spurted up from the wound. Anton hissed at the sharp pain, but he continued to draw the wound until it reached the other end of his arm.
"I feel like this kid has some problems," Megan said as she reflexively rubbed her forearm.
Bakugo squinted with regret at taking this job. He scratched his chin while trying to remember if he had come across something like this before. "Uh...kid. I'm not good with this stuff, but this school has a counselor I think."
Finished with the cut, Anton closed the blade and dropped it into his pocket. He took a step forward and trudged towards Bakugo.
The rest of the class saw the smaller kid walking towards Bakugo as if he were on a leisurely stroll. Scarlet beads started to run down his arm as he scowled right at the Pro-Hero.
It's about time I got some action. What's the point in having me if you aren't going to use me?
"Shut up," Anton whispered to himself.
After I beat this guy, can we go to the Hollywood Hills? I saw a pamphlet for celebrity homes, and I'd love to invade some of them.
"You won't attack any celebrities. Not until I say."
Bakugo was tempted to just unleash his gauntlets and waste the boy, but he shook his own head. He was a teacher, and part of that was seeing the quirks that the student would use. Just blowing the kid up would not be helpful, although the edginess of the student made him want to roll his eyes. Regardless, he stood in a relaxed pose and waited as Anton moved past the halfway point of the stadium.
Subject is still relaxed. It appears he has no plans to attack until we do.
"We'll need to be fast," Anton said to something inside him.
Bakugo pointed at himself. "You talking to me?"
His quirk makes him tough to combat on skin-level. I'll need to penetrate his skin somehow. Heh. Penetrate.
"Be serious," Anton said. "You can enter through his nose."
"Are you telling me what you're about to do?" Bakugo said. "Pretty dumb."
His nose won't be as effective. Directly in the bloodstream would-.
"Pathogen, attack!"
Sigh. I wish I had a smarter host.
Now, our beloved announcer came in again to announce the quirk. Take it away, big guy!
Anton Nosoi! His quirk: Pathogen! His blood contains a strange virus that is able to attach itself onto and enter other objects and living beings!
Anton placed himself about twenty feet away from Bakugo. He thrusted out his arm and stretched his palm out to face his opponent. As he did so, a lilac plume siphoned itself out of the wound on Anton's injured arm. With the speed of a pouncing cheetah, the thin stream of purple shot out and raced towards Bakugo.
He shot out a steady stream of flames. The ribbon circled around the first blast as Anton jumped to his left side, the other end of the gaseous rope still connected to his wound.
Bakugo locked his vision to the end heading towards him. He waved his arm to trace the path of the ribbon. It was moving faster than an annoying mosquito as he covered nearly his entire front end with flames to get rid of it. He nearly disappeared behind a wall of fire. Yet, as he looked around, he could not find the lavender flash. If anything, his flames had made it harder to see the target yet again.
Anton used the flames to his advantage as he raced to the side not shielded by Bakugo's fire. With the zippiness of the pathogen racing from his arm, he faced Bakugo from his right side, his ear lobes wide open.
Here I come, Sparky Boom Man!
The pathogen spiked itself into Bakugo's ear.
Bakugo clutched his head, a massive migrane pounding at his head. He grunted out and nearly crouched down in pain. His flames forgotten, they evaporated into smoke as he grit his teeth. A fuzzy burning sizzled his brain ash felt it begin to spread through his veins. His neck began to feel tense, his arms shook like the aftershocks of an earthquake. His red eyes strained in their sockets as he shook.
Sweat dripped out of every pore on Bakugo's body. The scorching vibration rained down his body as he felt his esophagus tighten.
Strange bile bubbled up in the pit of his stomach as his body started to convulse. He felt as if his insides were about to combust into bombs of ash.
Bakugo's fingers trembles. His legs were useless strands of spaghetti as he gasped for air. The grunts grew louder as he felt his balance begin to teeter off his center. This quirk different than what he had seen before. It was giving him a run for his money as he felt the energy disappear in his limbs. This seemed like a quirk a villain would have, and his eyes bulged as he tried to find a way to fight it.
Whoo! We're doing it, Boss! We're gonna kill him!
"What? No!" Anton said. "Just shake him out of the ring."
But it's so much fun! I especially like this guy. He feels warm.
"Pathogen," Anton said. "Finish the job no-."
Whoosh!
Bakugo, like a snap of lightening, ignited his entire body on fire. The brilliant orange flames popped from his skin and smothered him in a column of light.
Ah! The flames! Everything burns! Get me out!
Bakugo snapped into a straight posture and blew out a shockwave. The earth surrounding him rumbled, and he let out a quick roar as he felt the ret of his body return to normal. The migrane vaporized as the pathogen flew out of his ear where it entered. The pathogen escaped Bakugo and raced back to Anton's wound where the trace led back towards.
The lilac trail diminished as the head of the pathogen zipped back into Anton's wound. The force of it, combined with the tremors from Bakugo's shockwave, shoved Anton backwards and flop onto his back.
The pathogen burrowed in Anton, the wound continued to drip blood as Anton gasped for air as if he ran a marathon.
We should have seen that coming.
"We distracted ourselves."
He can set himself on fire, we should have known that. Or at least, you should have if you studied more before we came here.
"Not now, Pathogen," Anton gaped out.
Man, and we almost became the coolest kids in class. Maybe we can take up chess club. Those guys always get the girls!
Anton's breath lowered while a shadow grew over his face. Hearing harsh footsteps, his eyes lowered as a head of wild blonde hair poked into view.
Peering down at him, Bakugo ticked his tongue. He parked himself directly above his head and bent down.
"Gotta admit, your quirk has potential if that's what it can do on the first day," Bakugo said. "But in real battle, you'd be dead in an instant. You walked towards me because your range isn't big enough yet. And you couldn't survive being in me with the flames. If I was able to hit it before it entered me, that would have been the ballgame."
"Flames kill viruses," Anton whispered.
"Yes, but this isn't just a virus," Bakugo stated as he tapped Anton's chest. "It has a mind of it's own, doesn't it? That's why you have to talk to it."
"A lot. All the time."
"It's your quirk. You're in control. You could make it do anything, and it's time you start thinking of it that way."
Bakugo turned to walk back to the circle and await the next challenger. The good thing abut Anton's quirk is that the effects seemed non-existent once the pathogen left the body. Bakugo felt like he hardly broke a sweat. As he wiped his brow of perspiration, he had to remind himself that he indeed had. One more thought came to him, however. He froze mid-step and craned his neck back at Anton.
"Also, I assume you have to speak to this thing in you a lot. I could hear it's voice as it was inside me. Seems like a really annoying guy."
Bakugo walked away as Anton struggled to get back on his shaking legs.
He called me annoying? I'm not annoying...am I?
Anton said nothing as he clutched his cut arm and covered the wound with his hand. He staggered off the padded arena floor towards the elevator.
I'm not annoying, am I?
Anton?
Anton? You know, I have feelings just like you. You're supposed to say I'm not annoying!
"I hate lying." Anton muttered as he got to the elevator that would lead him back to his class.
Back up in the box, people were stunned at the battle. Bakugo had seemed to beaten so quickly. Yet, he was able to turn the tide to the point that he won without any major damage. It made sense considering he was the teacher, but most students did not want to be blown up this early in the school year.
"That was so cool," Blake said as he spun in a circle amongst himself. "I mean, he lost. I get that. He almost beat him, though!"
"Ugh. I'm already getting a headache," a thick, western European voice complained.
The rest of the class turned back towards the rear of the room. Blake froze in place, his eyes shifting towards the interrupter.
Seated on a barstool was a girl who drained a bottle of water into her mouth. She was a very beautiful and slender girl with milky grey eyes that had a strange film on top of them. Those eyes were further obscured by the dark shades that hung on the edge of her slim nose. It was as if her irises were covered with a sheen of wax that dulled the color. Her long, platinum blonde hair was pulled up into an imperfect side-braid. The deep frown on her face gave off an aura of bluntness, she cared little for what others thought.
The girl grabbed a black plastic walking stick and stood up, her posture elegant like a figure skater. She turnt her head upward and addressed the class.
"The French boy is very annoying," she said as she gestured in Blake's general direction. "I would reather get burned than stay here, so I'm going to fight our teacher just to get away."
Blake's smile evaporated off his face. His expression morphed into one of disbelief with the girl pivoting away and heading towards the elevator. A small bubble began to pop up and boil in his chest as he saw the girl exit the room. She turned around and faced the class. She would have seen Blake, quiet but becoming quickly angry, start to grind his teeth.
Megan noticed the quick change in Blake's mood. Frankly, she felt a small chill zap down her spine. The boy seemed so innocent a second ago. Now, he looked like murder was on his mind.
The girl did not notice any of their reactions, however, because she was blind.
Bakugo raised an eyebrow as the young girl tapped the walking stick on the ground. The patting grew into a rhythmic slap on the floor with every step she took.
"I'm ready," she said.
Bakugo crossed his arms. "You do know the starting circle is ten feet in front of you."
The girl sighed and tapped her stick again. She walked forward and stopped roughly ten feet away.
"And also five feet to your left."
The girl pushed up her black sunglasses and turned that way. Eventually, she made it roughly to the center of the starting circle.
"Begin!"
Just like Anton, the girl decided to take a leisurely stroll forward. Bakugo was getting tired of this charade. However, he decided to humor her as she tapped her stick and walked to the midway point of the arena. Except this time, she decided to stop. She placed her walking stick in front of her, both hands clasped to the handle.
They both stared at each other in a silent showdown.
"Go ahead."
Bakugo raised another eyebrow.
"Hit me."
The class gaped down at the girl.
"Does she have a death wish?" Katsu said as he put his hands on his head. Just one of Bakugo's attacks could cause damage that lands someone in a funeral home.
Bakugo shrugged to himself. Might as well give her what she wants. He lifted up one of his arms and grabbed the pin on one of his grenade gauntlets.
"Hope you can dodge," He said.
Ping.
An explosion rocked the entire building as a beam of harsh light blinded the students above. The explosion barreled itself forward towards the girl. Like a dragon about to consume its prey, the train of fire roared towards her.
She saw nothing. No light. No flames. She only felt the heat begin to tickle her skin. Then, warm it.
Now, it started to fringe her hair.
Her eyelashes.
Just as the fire got to her, she used her walking stick and shoved it into the ground. It propelled her to the side, and her body flew nearly as fast as Abel was able to run earlier in the class.
Just as the explosion reached her, she landed safely to the side of the blast. The beam rushed past her, a train of fire that screamed into the opposite wall of Bakugo.
As the girl turned around, she reached a hand out. It might sting for a second, but it was crucial for her future.
She plunged her hand into the flames. She grunted out in pain as the fire rushed past and over her hand. Coated with heat, she pulled her hand back just as the flames subsided.
The fire disappeared into thick smoke as she stood facing away from Bakugo. He could only see her back as she looked downward at her shoes.
Now, the girl saw something. She panned her head towards Bakugo, her stick still placed firmly in her hand. Now, instead of nothingness, she saw something no one else did. Specks of colorful dots that popped up right where Bakugo was standing. She could now see his every movement from these dots.
"Hit me again."
Bakugo decided to take the girl's words at face value and charge up another blast.
What Bakugo and nobody else noticed was that the dot's in the girl's head grew larger with every build-up of Bakugo's energy. She saw what he was about to do. Another blast. This time towards her left shoulder. She now knew how long she had and when he would attack.
In fact, she knew what he was going to do after. Even if Bakugo missed, he was charging up another quick attack towards the center of the arena. He had predicted she would jump there.
She used her stick again and rolled away from where she knew the blast would be.
Boom!
A thin dagger of fire shot itself towards the spot the girl was located. Yet, Bakugo shot another blast towards where he knew the girl was going to be. He blew one right in front of him. If he timed it right, the girl would be right there.
In fact, he did time it right. She had already jumped with her walking stick back to the middle of the arena.
When she did so, she jumped again to the right. Bakugo missed.
And so it went. Boom. Dodge. Boom. Dodge. Two booms. Two dodges.
Every combination, and the girl kept dodging.
"Can this girl predict the future?" Katsu asked to himself. Bakugo was extremely fast in his attacks. He knew that, before, he was only going at about half his speed to go easy on the students. Yet, as the moments ticked onwards, he saw him speed up. Now, he was attacking as fast as he could.
Bakugo was surprised at the speed of the reaction. It was as if the girl new exactly what he was going to do before he did it. She was not even moving forward, but she was certain where the next attack would be and what it was. It even seemed she knew the power of the attack since she made all of her dodges very close to the blast. If that was her quirk, it would be a formidable one.
After a few more seconds, the girl stopped right back where she started in the circle. She stopped because she new Bakugo would stop his barrage as well. Sure enough, he did. He breathed slightly heavier than normal. His shoulders were tense, almost straining from tightness as he massaged his right one. Sure, he could keep this up for many more hours, but he knew that would cut into the rest of class time.
They looked at each other in silence. The still air served as a block of ice wedged between them.
The girl nodded at Bakugo. "Thank you."
She turned to walk back to the elevator. She got what she wanted. She knew she could not beat Bakugo with pure strength in a head-to-head battle, but she would train for that day. Her objective was complete. She was now able to see his energy and his movements with those dots. They were not perfectly in shape with Bakugo yet, and if he were able to move, things would be much more challenging. Yet, they were bright enough to detect basic attacks and movements. As one sense abandoned her, another was created just as her harsh father had taught her.
Tapping her stick again on the mats, she smiled.
