Scientists say it takes one time for an alpha to find his beta. He just has to have that one second of eye contact with her and right there he knows, he knows it's her and she knows it's him. It's been that way since the beginning of time.

Chicago was full of alpha men itching to find their beta women. But aside from that it was still filled with crime and murder as was most places. I'd like to think I lived a very quiet life, invisible and relaxed, in my quiet neighborhood away from those who wish to be negative influences on me. However, my peaceful Fairview Meadows was shaken by something no one ever thought would happen. I never thought this would happen so close to me.

My next-door neighbor, Tyler, was shot and killed in his living room the night before. No one saw a thing. I only heard the gunshots that led to me calling the police. I gave the police what information I could, but they still wanted me to come in to their precinct within the next 48 hours so I could give a clear statement for their records. I didn't want to be involved in anything really. I was an unclaimed beta, I didn't need anyone knowing I lived alone. So I decided not to go into the precinct. I wasn't a huge fan of the police either. They were in and out of my childhood constantly.

For now, I kept my mind busy at work. I was a florist who owned a successful flower shop called Viking Flowers. Many mated males would come in to buy flowers for their wives or betas they were trying to court. A lot of brainless men asked me why a black woman would name her shop Viking Flowers. As if my name was not a dead giveaway, but then again they probably didn't know much about names and their meanings. My shop was always colorful with the different flowers that came in. I had gotten so popular I was able to hire enough staff to actually run the place. I took care of most of the financial work and inventory in my office. But in my spare time, I would be in the back of the store in our greenhouse feeding the stray cats that always seemed to find their way into my flowers. I needed this. I needed to keep my mind clear and positive.

Poor Tyler. I didn't know much about him. I'd hear him play the guitar sometimes. He twenty-four, just five years younger than me. A lot of the neighbors didn't care for him since he could be loud sometimes. But I wasn't one to be confrontational so if he bothered me I just put in my noise canceling headphones and went about my day. I was pouring some cat food into small bowls and placing them on the ground away from my tulips.

I didn't even realize the back door of the shop opened.

"Freya, there's some detectives here looking for you." Sadie said making me jump some. She was a sweet blonde-haired girl with dashing blue eyes and a button nose with a shy smile. Her alpha, Jordan was kind just like her. She noticed my jump and looked down some. "Sorry."

I shook my head smiling gently. Now the thought of these detectives definitely made me scowl inwardly.

"It's alright." I said and moved over to the door following her back inside. The entire shop smelled fresh and it always made me smile. I looked down at myself and made sure I looked as presentable as possible. I wore a long skirt with a black crop top with a large light weighted cardigan. My hair was pulled back to keep it out of my face. I took note of the two white men at the front simply looking around and admiring the flowers with little to no interest. One of the men was facing me with a respectful yet tired smile and nod of his head. He was an older man with black hair and a white beard. He was wearing a black cap and in casual jeans and a green shirt under a brown jacket. But I was sure hidden beneath his coat was a badge and gun. The other man beside him hadn't faced me yet.

"Can I help you officers?" I finally asked which made the other cop look at me. Only this time his entire movement came to a halt as he stared at me. Like the other cop, he was older with some white hair on the sides of his hair but most was still a dark brown. I could tell he was a man who took care of himself especially if he is a detective. But what would made me still, was the way he stared at me. It was like there was a sparkle in his deep brown eyes that I could not explain. His eyes were so focused and intense like he had never seen a woman before. And that's when it hit me and I knew that's when it hit him. The universe had worked its magic and had forged a bond of our souls together in this moment of eye contact. He's been titled my alpha as I am given to be his beta.

The man took a step toward me, a noticeable step that was past the man he was with. Immediately I glanced down and saw the badge and gun and now my own memories came crashing into me and so I took a step back out of caution. This made the man visibly tense and almost confused. Why would a beta back away from her alpha? I could tell already thoughts were forming in his mind that I may have just rejected him. It's rare when a beta rejects an alpha but still possible. The other man had already looked between us as if he knew what had just happened in these silent moments.

"How can I help you?" I asked a tad bit louder. The man before me cleared his throat.

"You're Freya Montgomery?" he asked. His voice was low and gravely and it sent chills down my body now and I gave a brief nod.

"I am." I replied and he nodded visibly looking me up and down. It was clear he was checking me out, seeing exactly who I was physically to wonder why we were suddenly paired in this moment.

"I'm Sergeant Hank Voight, this is my partner Det. Alvin Olinsky. We're with the Chicago Police Department working the Tyler Livingston case. You called the police." he said as if reminding me. I nodded looking down now. I knew I shouldn't have avoided the police station. But I lifted my head and nodded.

"Yes." I replied. He nodded.

"You were supposed to come in to the police station and give a statement at least 48 hours after the police spoke with you. You never came to the police station. Why is that?" he asked. I sighed and shrugged softly.

"Police make me nervous. I didn't want to be involved any further. I thought I was doing the right thing by calling you guys at least, but I just didn't need any part of me out there." I explained. I noticed the slight wince from Hank at my first statement, but I wouldn't change how I felt just because he felt uncomfortable about me being uncomfortable. He nodded slightly and looked at the other detective.

"Al, give us a moment?" he asked. Alvin looked between us and nodded.

"Sure, partner." he said before turning and giving his partner two firm pats on the shoulder before exiting the shop. Now Hank stepped closer to me and I looked him up and down slightly turning my body from him not making eye contact.

"Is there somewhere we can talk in private?" he asked lowly, looking down toward my shoulder before looking at me. Was an investigation really a good time to talk about this? I already knew the answer to this though. The discussion had to happen one way or another. From the way this man stood it screamed power. I knew he wasn't leaving my shop until we had talked. I just nodded.

"Follow me." I replied and turned and moved back down the hall from wince I came from. I could hear his heavy footsteps already behind me. I could even hear him inhaling some as if getting familiar with my scent.
