Discalimer; Nothing's mine. This just popped into my head but instead of focussing on the topic I wanted, I veered off track. Oh well.

Never

"What kind of man leaves his wife and son to believe him dead?" When Ray answered, Horatio held his anger in check in favour of getting his brother out of yet another mess.

Later, Horatio stood watching as Yelina and Ray Jr stepped onto the waiting Jet that was ready to take them to Brazil where they'd live happily ever after like the nice little family they were. When the woman and boy were aboard, Horatio stepped up close to his brother, getting in the former cop's personal space, startling Raymond slightly.

"Well I guess this is it," Horatio said, his grin rueful and his angry eyes hidden by his sunglasses. The brothers clasped arms and just as Raymond moved to walk to the jet, Horatio tightened his hold, pulling the man closer still until his lips were near Raymond's ear. "I'll tell Madison that her father up and left her, that she'll never see her brother again… that the only people she can count on for support is her mother, her uncle Horatio and Alexx." Then without a backwards glance, Horatio walked away, back to his hummer… back to Miami.

Unable to smother a laugh, the redhead gave up trying and sat back, his head flush to the headrest.

"I would have, at the very least, left him with an aching jaw… possible a black eye," a voice said from beside the laughing man and said man just kept laughing until breathing won out and he calmed down a little.

"If I thought I could keep Ray away from Yelina and Ray Jr, I'd not have brought them here. That said, short of killing him… for good this time… I don't see how I could keep him away. Despite his shortcomings, Raymond does love his family," Horatio reasoned and beside him, he heard a 'tutting' sound. Rolling his eyes, he started the hummer.

"Don't you roll your eyes at me Horatio Caine," the voice chided, more amused than affronted.

"When are you going to stop haunting me?" the redhead asked, finally glancing at his passenger seat.

"How many times do I have to tell you? I'm not haunting you…" the figure said and Horatio rolled his eyes again.

"You're dead, and you're sitting here telling me how much you'd like to deck my brother…"

"You're a funny guy, H… anyone ever tell you that?" For the first time in a long time, Horatio smiled a small but so typically 'H' like smile that the intent behind it just had to be true.

"Only you, my most favourite of all guardian angels." His tone was good-naturedly mocking and his other-worldly companion harrumphed.

"You know one of these days, when I leave I just won't ever come back… just to see how you manage without me," the voice threatened and Horatio rolled his eyes again.

"You promised me once that you'd never leave me and I'll hold you that till the end of time." He grinned, shooting his passenger a sly look. "You should know better than that."

"Can't you just humour me… just once?" Horatio laughed.

"You were the best friend a man could have ever had… the best criminalist I'd seen in a long time and your mind was a quick as your mouth; every word you spoke was always thought out, you never didn't mean something you'd said. No," Horatio smiled, turning his eyes forward as he pulled into the crime lab parking lot. "You'll never leave, Speed. This is your home." As he got out of the hummer, he felt an familiar warmth encase him and he just stood there, leaning against the door staring at the crime lab.

"Never…"
