The classroom in U.A. was the exact same as Izuku had left it.
The light charcoal walls warped around the tall cedar tour with opaque stained glass shimmering in the sun-drenched room. The cerulean chairs were slid underneath the free-standing desks with plywood bases that shielded the chairs from visibility at the front. The dark olive chalkboard was bare with chalk laying at the aluminum base that ran the length of the sign. Before the board, the wooden podium where Aizawa lectured and students debated stood guard atop an azure platform cropping out of the cyan floor. At the back, the turquoise cubbies remained shut underneath another green chalkboard.
The aroma of apple incense wafted in Izuku's nose. He scrunched the tip of his shoe on the familiar plush floor and processed the sight. He stood in front of his old desk, facing away from the wide bay windows that revealed the outside courtyard of his old school. The forest of oak trees and cherry blossoms waved in the gentle breeze with the cobalt gate gleaming in the midst of the setting sun. The area appeared silent and deserted with only his reflection staring back at him through the windows. He appeared just as he did all those years ago; his innocent green eyes flashed with his short red tie tucked beneath his iron-tinted cotton uniform.
"I don't know why you decided to sit behind me."
Izuku turned to his right. Bakugo sat on his desk with his legs draped over the edge. His feet rested on the base of the chair. In spite of his previous appearance covered in blood and dead in the destruction of the pawn shop, he looked untouched with not a fray out of frame of his uniform.
"Remember when Aizawa stopped the assigned seating in the last half of the year? You still sat behind me."
Izuku faced the window and gazed out towards the empty city. "Or maybe you decided to sit in front of me."
"I got to pick first," Bakugo sat up and glared at the boy. "My name is before yours."
"You knew that was my favorite spot. The desk behind you," Izuku said.
"Yeah, you should have changed it."
Izuku blew out a long breath that fogged up the clear glass. He wiped away the fog with the squeak of the glass chilling his fingers. He stepped closer to the window and examined the sight. His eyes flicked to the side around where Bakugo's reflection should have been.
"Why do you not have a reflection?" Izuku asked.
"Because he's lost."
Izuku turned towards the desk at the very back of the classroom. Shoto stood straight as a pin next to it with a bright burning halo levitating his head. Instead of looking at Midoriya, he stared out the window at the golden skyline gleaming underneath the retreating sun.
"He doesn't get the options that you or the others get. He...has a price he still has to pay."
Izuku looked at Bakugo. For the first time, he looked into Bakugo's crimson eyes and saw his solemn look reflecting back at him. A moment of melancholy understanding past between them as the stillness of the room formed a vacuum between them. Izuku had a suspicion as to the price Bakugo would have to pay, and he braved a step towards him with the other boy avoiding his gaze.
"Kacchan," Izuku said. "Why?"
Bakugo swallowed and squeezed his hands over the edge of the desk. "It was your fault, y'know. Yours and that half-and-half bastard over there," he pointed at Shoto. "You're the ones that convinced me to ask her out. And then, wouldn't you know it? We end up getting married. Having a kid together. Heh, who would have thought?"
"Actually," Shoto said. "You had the kid first. Then, you got married."
Bakugo snorted and shook his head. "Yeah, you're right. I got so much shit from my parents for that. Good thing I was already the number two hero, or my mom would have sent me here a long time ago."
"Right. Here," Izuku looked down at his hands. Neither of them were scarred anymore. "Where is here?"
"A better question is," Shoto said while approaching Izuku. "When is here? This is a place that is both now and never. Past and present. Today and tomorrow. It's a place where you have to accept your actions and your character. Who you were, and who you are."
"And," Izuku blinked as he saw Shoto's reflection appear in the window next to him. The shine of the halo warmed the left side of his face. "Who you will be?"
"Sadly, that ship has sailed for most of us," Shoto nodded towards Bakugo. Then, he pointed behind Izuku into the heart of the classroom.
Izuku turned around. Where there previously stood no person, Alistair and Moxie stood next to Leo who also had a halo similar to Shoto's over his head. Alistair had his hand in his school uniform pockets with a quiet expression of regret. Moxie waved her head around the room and soaked in the entire scene. Leo had a gentle smile on his face, his hair perfectly draped over his head and illuminated by the light of the golden circle above him.
"Moxie. Leo," Izuku said. "Shouldn't you be back in the real world? And Shoto, where are we? Is this the Central Platform?"
"No, they hate you there right now," Shoto said. "If it was, you would be incarcerated the moment you arrived. You were on the list today, Izuku. The list to enter the Gates at the edge of the Central Platform. You and a few of your students. You used the technology of Void Industries and the Central Platform against them. Cheating death...that's a pretty grave sin."
"But I did it for them" Izuku pointed at the three teenagers in the class. "Them and my other students. I did it for One-For-All. The Creator himself said the world needed it."
"That's why I brought you here," Shoto said. "Well, I helped bring you here. I never worked for the Central Platform, Midoriya. They believed I did, but it was a ruse. You see, The Creator you saw, the one that looked like that famous actor, he was a creator. That's the title given to him. But he isn't The Creator Of All. The one that made One-For-All. The one that sent quirks to Earth to begin with. The one that creates all universes and the inhabitants within them. The one I've actually been working for this whole time. Call him whatever you want, but he is the truth this world and countless others rely upon."
"So, it's his show," Bakugo leaned his back on the window and rested his arms behind his head. "If he wanted you dead forever, he could make that happen."
"But he doesn't," Shoto said. "Leo's theory was accurate. Right now, the students of Class 1-A are waking up within their concentration tubes at Void Industries. That includes Martel whose consciousness was uploaded into his body with Edith Void's remote. Fortunately for him and the other students, help may be on the way to release them from these tombs and release them into the real world."
"May be?" Izuku asked.
"Unlike the other students, Alistair and Moxie don't physically exist in our universe," Shoto said. "However, both of them currently possess the power of One-For-All within them. For Moxie, the hair she ingested. For Alistair, the crystal around his neck. The power of One-For-All crosses universes. And so, the wielder of such power has the ability as well."
"But I gave up One-For-All," Izuku said.
"For the purposes of using it as a quirk," Shoto said. "But it's a power that doesn't disappear from you forever. There's still a small kindling of it that exists within you. Forever ingrained within your flesh and blood."
Moxie stepped forward and pushed back a strand of her brown hair from her eye. "So, Mister Todoroni, are you saying me and Alistair can be real?"
"I'm saying you have the ability," Shoto said. "You, Alistair and Midoriya have a decision to make. You may enter this world and accept the future The Creator Of All has to offer you, or you can exit the classroom through the doorway over there," Shoto pointed at the door leading out to the hallway.
"What happens if we go out that way?" Moxie asked.
"I will escort you through the doorway, as my work on Earth has concluded," Shoto said.
"Okay," Alistair said. "But where does it go? The Central Platform?"
"No. It goes on," Shoto said.
"On what?"
"On."
"Okay, I've had enough of the riddles," Alistair frowned and rolled up his sleeves. He stepped next to Moxie and bared his teeth at Shoto. "If you're saying me and Moxie both have a chance of existing, then just say that and let us take that chance."
"I am," Shoto said. "You two along with Midoriya can make your decision. Take your time."
"It's okay. You can have it," Alistair marched forward to Shoto. "I'm going to the real world!"
Moxie tugged on Alistair's black cloak. "But, Alistair, I...I think I want to go through that door."
The people in the classroom stared at Moxie. Izuku's breath hitched, and he walked over towards the girl.
"Moxie, you can't do that."
"Why not?" Moxie asked. "Mister Deku, I'm not real."
"Moxie, you have One-For-All! The world needs it!"
"I don't have a family," Moxie said. "I don't have friends. I don't have nobody. I'm alone. I mean, my accent ain't even real, is it? But if I had a chance to go...y'know, to a much better place? A place every person dreams of going? A place where I can meet this person Shoto speaks of? Paradise. Why wouldn't I do that?"
Izuku placed his hands on Moxie's shoulders. "Because you're wrong about all of that. You have a family. In fact, you have fifteen members of your family. And me. You are as real as any person I've known. And you deserve that chance. The chance to be real and feel the sunshine and not be alone anymore. The chance to live and feel the sand between your toes and have your heart broken and hopefully have it fixed one day by somebody special. It's your chance, Moxie."
"But what If I wanna go," Moxie said with a tremor in her voice. "If what he's saying is true, I'll have a place there. I won't have a place on Earth.
"You will," Izuku said. "And your place is as a hero. I choose you for One-For-All, but it wasn't just me. There's a whole line of ancestors that have to make that decision along with me. Every single one of them deemed you worthy. Every single one of them saw what the future had to offer, and they all decided you were the one that would be a Symbol Of Peace for the world. A hero that fights for the truth and justice. A hero that can show each person she saves just how much love the world has to offer. My goal was never to save people, Moxie. It was to make each person I save feel that the world was just a little bit less lonely than before. And you, Moxie, you're the last person I can save as the hero known as Deku. After this moment...I'm Izuku Midoriya. Some nerdy kid that wrote in notebooks and pushed garbage around a beach. And knowing that people like you and the rest of our class are the future, that kid's hope and dream that he could save the world...it'll finally come true."
Izuku smiled and released Moxie. He backed up in between Bakugo and Shoto before releasing a long breath.
The flames of Moxie's existential crisis dies down. The words of Izuku threw a cool bucket of water into her soul and made her beck relax from its tense state. The shock of knowing of of her memories and sensations were fake still choked her heart. However, the idea of becoming real and making a real impact caused her to flash a melancholy grin at Izuku and nod.
"I reckon the moonshine is as strong in the real world, ain't it?"
Izuku gasped. "Young lady, you are much too young to be drinking. Stop it!"
The other members of the room chuckled. Even Bakugo quirked a small grin he hid behind his hand.
"Well, we should be off then," Alistair said. "Lots of places to go. Autographs to sign. All that. Also, this universe gives you magical powers, right? Do I get one?"
"They're not magical powers," Shoto said. "Get it right, dummy. And I don't know. Be grateful you even get to be in that world."
Izuku clapped his hands together. "Excellent. Shoto, could you tell us how long we need to stay here before we go home?"
"Not long," Shoto said. "The moment me and Leo leave, you will all disappear and be taken back home. And in Alistair and Moxie's case, their new home."
Izuku blinked and shifted his eyes towards Leo. "What?"
Shoto stared at Izuku, a terse moment of silence blowing between them. "Leo expelled all of his energy into taking you and the others through time. Even with Moxie's quirk, it was too much for him to take. And...he is on the list for today."
"The list," Izuku said with disgust. "The list? Screw the list."
"Midoriya-."
"No, screw the list," Izuku said with a scowl. "I told you I wasn't leaving without all my students, and-."
"Mister Deku," Leo interrupted. The gentle smile was plastered on his face with his soft voice flowing through the room like a rive of honey. "It's okay. I wanted to be a hero, and because of you, I was given that opportunity. My story is over and fulfilled. There are no other accomplishments I care to have."
"Look, mate," Alistair said to his fellow Brit. "You've never even been to the real world. Don't you want to see what is out there?"
"Everything I need will be where I'm going," Leo said as he looked at Shoto.
Alistair shook his head and grabbed his necklace. "Listen, I will give him my necklace. I'll go with Shoto, and you go home."
"No, I can't," Leo said. "And I won't."
"I will," Alistair said. He held out the crystal at Leo. "It's yours. Take it."
"No, I-."
"I am deeming you wielder of the Crystal," Alistair said. "How can we make it official?"
"Alistair, that's not how it works," Shoto said. "You don't get to decide who gets this power."
"Then, I'll give Leo One-For-All," Moxie pulled at a strand of her hair. She thrusted it towards Leo. "Here. Eat this."
"That's not how it works," Shoto said. "Like Izuku said, it's not just the person that makes the decision. It's the ancestors, and it's also The Creator Of All. And today...he has decided Leo's story has ended. That's part of the reason he let us come here instead of the Central Platform. So there is no cheating with the transportation technology this time. The only way out of here is through the door...or the route you will be going soon."
"What about Kacchan?" Izuku asked. "What happens to him?"
"I...I have to spend some time here," Bakugo said. "I have a price to pay."
Izuku thought back to his time with Bakugo. He approached the boy and stood right by his desk. Izuku's face fell into a sad glance as Bakugo could only stare out the window. He never thought that a person as set on becoming a hero as Bakugo would end up being a part of such a horrible thing.
"Kacchan," Izuku said. "Please tell me why? For all of this?"
Bakugo sighed. He his hid eyes behind his cupped hand and paused for a few moments. The rest of the group stepped closer towards the boy who let out a gruff cough.
"Ochako died because of an accident I caused," Bakugo said. "I was reckless. Knocked over a building she was underneath. Died instantly. So...I decided to give up our newborn son for adoption. His eyes...they were just like hers. It's cliched, but he was practically a baby version of her. Same hair and everything. I pretended neither of them existed for a while, and then I got a call."
Bakugo stopped talking and began to shake in the chair. His jaw trembled, and his fists balled up on the side of his face. "Car accident."
Izuku braved a hand on Bakugo's shoulder. For once, Bakugo did not reject the touch and wiped away a tear.
"So, you came across the technology Edith Void was creating," Izuku said. "She sold it to you as a way to have both of them."
"I wasn't stupid," Bakugo stammered out. "I knew it wasn't real. But when I was within Daedalus...it felt more real than anything I had experienced since she died. Colors appeared in my eyes. I tasted. I heard. I felt. But then...Ochako died anyway. And history repeated itself. So, we ran the simulation again and again. I told Shoto after he got cancer, and Edith thought It would help the simulation if I had someone I knew. Ochako survived longer and longer, but both of them would still die a couple of years in. So...I decided you would be a good pick to join me."
"Nobody else. Just me?"
"You matter to me, Deku," Bakugo said. "And somehow, that would change what happens. And it did. And then Edith got the idea to create characters that could be used. Special computer programs that could be taken out and then created in the real world. She said it could even be used to recreate Ochako and my son. But, we needed to perfect the system first. Mold the characters into exactly what we wanted. I knew how my Ochako acted in the real world. She was never...quite like her. Something was just off. So, we kept experimenting until one day. We reached the portion of the simulation where we became teachers. Ochako still died, but my son was somehow still around. The longest he had been. I thought this could at least be the one where I could be with him permanently. Then...someone uploaded All-For-One into the system. Edith never told me about any of that or about Alistair. If I knew it was there, and it was controlling Alistair to take part of my quirk energy away to become real in the digital universe...I would have unplugged everything myself."
Bakugo shook and uncovered his face. Tears rolled down his cheek while he tried to wipe them away. "I can't forgive myself. I see her every moment. I see him every moment. I'm haunted, and I thought this would fix it. But the only thing that will fix it...it's to pay for what I did. It's to punish myself for my sins."
Izuku kneeled down and looked at Bakugo from his eye level. Izuku's face was serious with the boy peering at his former classmate and best friend. "No. The way to fix this is to forgive yourself, Kacchan. You have one more villain to fight, and it's that part of you that won't give yourself permission to forgive yourself. You have that strength within you, Kacchan. It's time you used it."
"I can't," Katsuki said. "I'm not worth it."
"You are," Izuku said into Katsuki's ear. "Because I know Uraraka forgives you. Your son forgives you. And for all we've been through together, even for this...I forgive you."
Izuku embraced Katsuki and rested his head on the crook of his neck. Katsuki cried and enveloped Izuku with his own arms. His eyes closed, Katsuki buried his face in Izuku's shoulder. Katsuki choked for air with his sobs reverberating through the walls of the classroom. With a deep breath of his own, Izuku cradled Katsuki and even ran a hand through his spiked hair coarse and thick through his fingers. His clothing became damp around where Katsuki's tears stained him. Izuku rubbed Katsuki's back in slow circles and breathed slow to catch Katsuki's gasps of air.
Eventually, Katsuki caught on to pattern of breathing and followed Izuku. His tears slowed, and his shoulders rested lower on his body. His chest puffed out, and Katsuki sat up straight with a strong look blazing over his face. He faced Izuku and finally gained the pride necessary to look him right in his green eyes. The two were enveloped in the warm sunlight that made the pair glow bright as if Izuku had shared One-For-All's might with Katsuki yet again.
"We all have a long journey ahead of us," Katsuki said.
"We do," Shoto said placing his hand on the blonde boy. "But a wise man once said to me...what's behind you doesn't matter anymore."
Katsuki rolled his eyes. "Even dead, you can't stop being a fortune cookie, IcyHot."
The three classmates laughed together. Exchanging private looks between the three, Izuku and Shoto pulled Katsuki up to his feet. They walked with arms around each other with Izuku in the center, and they moseyed towards the other three in the classroom. They stopped in front of Leo, Moxie and Alistair with small smiles on their peaceful faces.
"Leo," Shoto said releasing Izuku from his grasp. "It's time to move on."
Moxie grabbed Leo and hugged him. The boy, as surprised as he had been with all of this news, was as calm as ever. The memories within him had given him real thoughts and emotions, and he felt that was all that was necessary. Not only that, but he had a real impact in saving both One-For-All and his other classmates. For someone that technically didn't exist, he felt he had done far more than most people who had lived whole lives. His heart quickened, but it was a feeling of excitement instead of anxiety that flowed over the boy. His mind at ease, a calming warmth soothed him like a nice wool blanket over his shoulders.
Leo left Moxie's grasp and walked with Shoto towards the doorway. They nodded at each other, and Shoto led the way towards the exit. When Shoto opened the door, the bright wall of white met them. Instead of a hallway, it appeared to be a portal to another universe.
As Shoto was about to step into the light with Leo next to him, Izuku rushed for the exit.
"Wait," Izuku shouted. "I have a question!"
Shoto and Leo looked back at Izuku. The boy looked right at Shoto and swallowed.
"Heaven," Izuku said. "It's real, isn't it?"
Shoto said nothing. Instead, he lifted up an eyebrow to goad him onward in his thoughts.
"In Heaven," Izuku said. "Is it really a place where you can have whatever you want?"
Shoto snorted and crossed his arms. "Oh, Midoriya. So typical to think of Heaven like that. Do you think it's just a big casino in the sky? A resort with a buffet and all the wine to drink?"
"I don't know," Izuku said. "I never really thought about that stuff."
Shoto laughed. "Heaven isn't a place where you can have whatever you want. Heaven is a place where you'll have no need for wanting."
With a quick nod to Leo, Shoto grabbed his arm and pulled both of them into the light. They disappeared through the white veil and left at peace with the world.
The door slammed shut. Izuku turned around just to see his own outline turn into a bright golden tint that vibrated over his skin. He saw Moxie and Alistair covered in the same sensation. With one last glance towards his old desk, he saw Katsuki smirk while seated with his legs up and resting on the surface. For once, the boy seemed genuinely happy and not at the expense of others, nor was it due to his own accomplishments.
Instead, it was happiness for someone else. For Izuku. Selfless joy.
"Not bad for a quirkless nerd," Kacchan said with a wide, pure grin.
As the room enveloped into white, Izuku closed his eyes. He smiled as well, finally ready for whatever would come when he awoke.
This time, instead of white, he was met with black. The black of the interior of his real eyelids.
