Turk stared morosely at the beer that JD placed before him. Seeing that JD was staring, he sighed, taking a drink to placate him. It seemed to work as JD laughed and started to make a joke about a woman near them.

"Don't. I'm not in the mood for it." Turk closed his eyes, he knew that the tone of his voice had made him seem vulnerable but he didn't want to go through the motions of laughing at JD's attempted humour and then having to make a quip of his own.

They sat in silence for a minute and Turk could feel the tension mounting between them. He knew that JD was going to say something to try and comfort him, but he wasn't in the mood for that either. He had just wanted to be left alone in the apartment, but it had seemed easier to agree to go to the bar than to have JD pester him about it all night.

"It wasn't the end of the world." Turk looked away from the beer long enough to glance at him before turning away again. "All I'm saying is that they'll be other surgeries."

"Nah, I was sure that I had this one." He took another swig of his beer, "I was certain this was my surgery and then they passed me over at the last minute. You have no idea what that feels like."

JD's voice took on a slightly aggravated tone, causing Turk to clench his hand tighter around his bottle. He didn't need to get in an argument, that wouldn't make him feel better. "I'm a doctor to you know…"

"Precisely," he snapped the word before swallowing hard, trying not to shout, managing to lower his voice. "You're medical. I'm a surgeon, there's a difference. You… You're going to get patients whatever happens, you're part of this huge medical family that shares people and works as a team." He looked at JD again, who stared back with a confused expression on his face. He shook his head as he turned back to his bottle. "Surgeons work alone, we work against each other. Even during surgery we hope that the other person says or does something to screw up so that we get more patients." He scoffed, taking another swig of his beer. "You could never understand what it feels like."
