A/N: I am back from my break, so expect more updates sooner. I rewrote chapter 3's Roswaal's POV to have his goal to be more clear and made the tome be more vague thanks to the criticism in the reviews. As a desclaimer, I'm an anime-only who dabbed in some spoilers, so I'll do my best when I miss some stuff. Be free to criticize me if I mess up on something.

July 18th: Added extra phrases to Beatrice's dialogue.

After Reinhard departed from the mansion, Roswaal stood in front of Subaru, Rem, and Ram.

"Subaru, you will officially start working tomorrow. Ram, Rem, have fun with Subaru~. I have some business to attend to, so I will not be back for dinner."

The twin sisters nod in agreement as Roswaal quickly leaves the room.

Subaru stared at the twin maids, unsure about what is going to happen to him next. It is his first time working as a butler, and he only knew some information from mangas and animes he saw.

Ram took a step forward towards Subaru.

"Let us start the introductions again as coworkers. My name is Ram, the older of the two twin sisters."

Ram points to Rem for her turn.

"Hello, my name is Rem."

Subaru took a quick mental note on who is who due to their similar names. After that, he started his introduction.

"Hello, Rem and Ram. My name is Subaru. Pleased to work under you two."

Subaru bowed slightly.

"As a foreigner to these lands, I do not know much. Sorry if I become a bother."

The sisters looked at each other, and Ram spoke first.

"Sister, sister, we picked up someone useless."

"Sister, sister, Rem is unsure about Subaru's introduction."

"Sister, sister, Barusu will have to be taught hard to be useful. I will handle it."

After hearing the name, Barusu, Subaru became confused by the sudden nickname.

"Why the name, Barusu?"

Ram turned to the door and opened it.

"Barusu is Barusu. Let us start part two of your tour. Rem, follow along as well."

Rem nodded in agreement.

"Yes, sister."

Subaru shrugged off the weird nickname from his mind and followed the twins.

From the tour, the twins showed Subaru areas he has not seen from the previous tour. The rooms were mainly areas for the butlers and maids.

Subaru learned a great deal of most of the mansion and was surprised about the grand bath the mansion contained. Relaxing in it brought great excitement.

The trio finally stopped in the main hall of the mansion. Ram turned to face Rem and Subaru, who was following her.

"There is one more thing to know, Barusu. We have another resident in the mansion who is a spirit but rarely comes outside. She resides in a dimension linked to a random door. I doubt you ever run into her since I rarely come in contact with her."

"Rem hardly ever met her also."

Subaru gave a quick thought to push his luck to find this resident. He might as well give it a try and open a random door. He started touching every door handle to get a feel of which door it can be.

The twins watched Subaru as he felt each doorknob.

"Sister, sister, what is Subaru doing?"

"Sister, sister, Barusu is a fool who thinks he can find the right door on his first try."

Subaru finally came across the door that felt just right and opened it. The room that appeared before him contained an enormous library with every shelf filled to the brim with books.

In the middle of the room, sitting on a stool and reading a book, there was a short, young girl with blond, vertical drill-shaped twin tails, and large sky-blue eyes that held pink butterfly iris, which felt unnatural yet cute towards Subaru. She wore a pinkish, red dress with white trimmings, pink and purple vertically-striped tights, and pink shoes with butterfly straps. On her left waist accommodated a large, pink ribbon that held similar designs to the two ribbons tied to her twin tails. She even wore a tiny crown on the right side of her head that makes Subaru wonder how it stays on her head without falling. She looked so cute and sweet that Subaru's heart would melt seeing her. However, Subaru could tell her eyes looked sad.

Subaru walked inside the room and pointed towards the girl.

"Loli detected!"

The girl stopped reading and turned her head towards Subaru with an annoyed face.

"I can not help but feel insulted. Who are you, I wonder?"

"The newly hired butler of the mansion, Subaru! What is your name?"

"I am called Beatrice. Since you only came here for introductions, you can leave, I suppose."

"Beatrice, can we chat for a bit since you hardly come out?"

"I said leave, human."

Beatrice looked hurt, but Subaru wanted to know why. A child should not look so sad.

"But-."

An unknown, great force shoved Subaru out of the room with the door closing. On the ground, he did not know what happened during that exchange.

The twins stood next to the downed Subaru and looked down on him.

"Subaru must have no luck with people concerning introductions."

"Barusu has a knack for that with us."

Subaru stood up and patted himself to get the dust off.

"Thanks for the compliments. What is next?"

Ram scanned Subaru from the top down.

"First off, Barusu needs a uniform. Sister, are there any leftover uniforms?"

"There should be some, but Rem is not sure if the uniforms could fit Subaru. If not, Rem will start measurements on him."

None of the uniforms fitted Subaru, so Rem took measurements on him. He felt uncomfortable having someone taking his measurements, especially when it is a cute girl. Fortunately, Rem measured quickly and started working on making adjustments to one of the uniforms.

While Rem worked on the uniform, Ram took Subaru to the side.

"For your job, you will be our helper until you become accustomed to the work. We do not know your capabilities, so this following week, you will have to do various sorts of chores. We also have zero expectations."

"Is there any hope for me?"

"No hope at all as if I had any."

Based on what Ram has told Subaru, they will tolerate his mistakes. He did not expect them to be devils when it came to housework, but he did not foresee them being so lenient.

Ram tiled her head towards Rem's direction.

"Sister, how much longer until Barusu's uniform is completed?"

"About 10 minutes, sister."

"Barusu, follow me."

Ram left the room with Subaru following.

Subaru had no idea where Ram is taking him next since Ram already covered all of the rooms in the mansion.

"Where are we going?"

"Barusu's room, of course. Would you rather sleep in a shed?"

A memory from his first tour resurfaced as the bedrooms were part of that and not during the second tour.

"Honestly, a shed would be better than a wagon, but the bed matters the most."

"The shed it is."

"Wait, I did not mean it like that!"

Ram rolled her eyes as she looked unamused and stopped in front of a door. She opened the door to reveal an ordinary bedroom.

"This is your bedroom. You can decorate it, but I double if you have anything on you to decorate the room."

The room looks simple, but the bed matters most for Subaru. He could finally sleep comfortably every day. Taking care of the mansion while enjoying its benefits and being paid has to be the best part of his life.

Ram closed the door before Subaru entered.

"Do not want Barusu to knock himself off cold when he touches the bed. We still have many preparations to do."

"Thanks for the save."

"Barusu, how well educated are you?"

That question stung Subaru hard, reminding him of the reality of being in another world. Somehow he can communicate with the residents of this world, but he had no understanding of their language.

Subaru nervously laughed, knowing full well how disappointed Ram would be.

"I do not know how to read and write. I also do not know how money works here."

Ram looked displeased by the two answers, but Subaru continued.

"However, I do know math."

Ram's disappointed face slightly lifted as she sighed.

"Any tiny hope I had in you diminished even further. You still have much to learn, Barusu. Let us check with sister. The uniform should be done."

The duo arrived at the room which held Rem. She made some final touches to the uniform as they walked in.

Rem held out the finished uniform.

"Wear this, Subaru. The changing room is by your left."

Subaru grabbed the uniform and headed towards the changing room.

"Thanks, Rem."

Subaru starting changing into his butler uniform. The clothes felt unfamiliar to wear, but they fit perfectly to his body. Subaru felt impressed by Rem's handiwork.

Subaru, in full uniform, went back to the twins.

"Do I look good?"

The twins took a moment to respond as they gazed at Subaru's change in outfit.

"Subaru looks normal compared to his previous outfit."

"Barusu still looks scary no matter what he wears, but it is an upgrade."

Always the eyes that put people off. Subaru shook that thought away from his mind.

"Thanks for the compliments. When do I need to wear it?"

Ram yawned in ignorance.

"When you are on duty, Barusu, which is most of the time. Rem can make some spare uniforms later. Currently, you do not start today, so you can go back to your weird outfit. Sister and I will have to continue work, so you can go explore or watch us work, Barusu."

Subaru nodded and went to change as the twins left.

After dropping off his uniform in his room, Subaru felt determined to find Beatrice again. He could not shake off the feeling of sadness after seeing Beatrice looking so depressed before he alerted her. Does Beatrice know about Emilia? Ram did mention Beatrice is a spirit like Puck, so does Beatrice miss Puck as well? However, questioning Beatrice about the two hurt him also due to how he indirectly caused the deaths of the two. He had no plan on how he wanted to handle Beatrice.

Subaru went to a random door and opened it, revealing the library and Beatrice.

Beatrice stared at Subaru in annoyance.

"You again? How did you find this room again in a single day, I wonder?"

"Luck and fate. This kind of stuff is bound to happen."

Beatrice raised an eyebrow after hearing the statement.

"That could work, I suppose. What do you want, I wonder?"

Subaru could not directly ask Beatrice about her previous state of mind, so he would need to take his time with small talk before diving into heavy topics.

"I heard you were a spirit, so Beatrice must know something about magic."

"Betty does know a lot about that subject, in fact. And?"

"Can you teach me magic, please?"

"Why would Betty need to teach a human about magic, I wonder?"

"Everyone else is busy, and from my viewpoint, all you do is read, so why not you?"

Beatrice tilted her head, most likely pondering about Subaru's answer.

"Betty can help, I suppose. Magic comes from an internal gate in the body by drawing mana from it. What is your attribute?"

"Attribute?"

"Stand still."

Beatrice stood up from her stool and stood next to Subaru. She closed her eyes and touched Subaru's chest with her right index finger. Subaru did not understand the situation as Beatrice kept silent for a minute.

Subaru's mind raced for a bit, thinking of the kind of attribute he has. Does this world have the fire, water, wind, and earth magic? He knew ice existed, so water has to be one. What if he had them all?

Beatrice opened her eyes and took a step back.

"This is a rare one. You have yin magic, in fact."

Rare and sounds cool? This type of magic is definitely for protagonists.

"What can I do with yin magic?"

"With yin magic, you can cause distortions and illusions."

It's all debuffs! How come I received the worst one?

"Beatrice, can you cast one on me?"

"I could do one, I suppose. Shamak."

Darkness consumed Subaru. He could not see. He could not feel. He could not do anything. All he could see was the empty void around him, causing him to be fearful. The dark area around him reminded him of his nightmare. There was nothing he could do, and he felt scared and alone.

Suddenly, the darkness around Subaru dissipated, causing Subaru to return to his senses. Yin magic is more deadly than he thought.

"What was that?"

Beatrice crossed her arms unamused.

"Shamak, one of the basic magic for yin."

"I can do that also?"

"Your affinity allows you to do it. Beatrice believes you want to learn Shamak, I suppose."

"Great, what do I need to do?"

"Betty will act as support for your mana usage, so your gate can operate on its own."

Beatrice went behind Subaru and placed her hand on his back.

"Visualize the mana flowing around in your body, and expel some of it through your gate, out of the body."

"Visualizing is what I do best. Fantasizing, even better."

"Start already."

Subaru tried to visualize the mana in his body and followed the steps Beatrice gave. He felt something tingling in his body as he tried to produce the mana for the spell.

Suddenly, in a rapid explosion, a black cloud from Subaru filled the library quickly, leaving a collapsed Subaru and an unpleasant Beatrice.

Beatrice poked Subaru, but the poke felt more like a jab rather than a simple poke.

"Are you awake yet, I wonder?"

"What happened?"

"You combusted into black mist, and Betty had to clean the library thanks to you."

Subaru felt terrible and struggled to sit up.

"Sorry about that. Why do I feel so sluggish?"

"Your mana gate overused due to the lack of usage of it, so a good night's sleep would help with that. Practice daily would gradually expand its usage, but your gate is extremely weak, I suppose."

Subaru finally sat up and propped himself against one of the shelves.

"How long will it take?"

"For a human like you, it will take years, I suppose. Are you done with Betty now, I wonder?"

Beatrice held the same, uninterested face during the entire interaction, so Subaru felt hesitant to ask about her sad look from before. However, he predicted this might be the best moment to ask.

"Beatrice, how come you looked so depressed when I first came in here? Does it concern Emilia?"

"It is none of your business. Whatever happened to that half-devil does not concern Betty, I suppose."

"What about Puck?"

Beatrice started to tear up slightly.

"Leave."

"Wait, I'm trying to help. I couldn't leave you alone when you look sad."

"Leave, human."

"If it is about Puck, punish me accordingly since I let both Emilia and Puck down during the night of their deaths. I could not do anything."

Beatrice teared up more and forcibly sent Subaru out of the library with the door closing behind him.

Subaru crashed against the wall, but he tried standing up quickly, but he still feels tired from the mana exhaustion.

"Beatrice!"

Subaru opened the same door to reveal an ordinary room. He tried other doors, but none of them led the library.

Subaru knew he screwed up somewhere. He managed to hold a friendly conversion about magic and even have Beatrice teach him, but he could not help Beatrice in return. Puck's death triggered Beatrice, but there was nothing he can do to help even though he was at fault for their deaths. The dread of not being useful continues to haunt him.

The talk has to happen another day, so Subaru decided to wait a day or two before he can help as he felt responsible for the loss.

Many hours passed as Subaru took a rest to recover from the sluggish feeling from casting magic. He also took a bath and ate dinner with his coworkers. Apparently, Rem does most of the cooking while Ram took on the small tasks.

Eventually, Subaru went back to his room to sleep, but there was a knock on his door.

"Come in."

Ram entered the room carrying paper, ink, and quill.

"Lessons begin now and every night."

"Already?"

"The more you learn, the less sister and I have to do. Sit on the chair, so I can start teaching you. Rem is already overwhelmed by work."

"What about you?"

"Barusu, that does not matter right now. A busy day is ahead of you, so let us start before I fall asleep from boredom."

Subaru reluctantly went to the desk in his room. Learning English was hard enough, but learning another whole language, especially in another world should prove difficult.

Ram started teaching Subaru the alphabet while Subaru tried his hardest to comprehend everything. If he is going to stay in this world for the rest of his life, learning the language would benefit him greatly.

After an hour, Ram felt sleepy and ended the lessons for today. She advised Subaru to self-study for a bit before the next evening lessons and left.

Subaru studied for a bit longer until he decided to call it quits.

On his bed, he stared at the ceiling as he processed his day. As the new butler of the mansion and given a taste of the living conditions here, he felt very relaxed. The bath was great, and Rem's cooking is the best. He knew had lots of work to do soon, but due to the lack of entertainment, his work would keep him busy to pass the time.

However, Subaru held a sense of guilt that carried him. This is the mansion where Emilia lived and the future he could have spent with Emilia. Despite Roswaal's claims about being able to revive her, Subaru still feels responsible for not warning Emilia in time. He has not heard anything about necromancy in this world or if there is magic that revives people. Then again, he held the power to respawn by death, so there is a possibility.

There is another matter concerning Puck and Beatrice. Unlike Emilia, Roswaal said nothing about the chance of reviving Puck, and Subaru knew nothing about how spirits work. Based on Beatrice's reactions, Puck was a close individual to Beatrice. Her loss links to Subaru's lack of action. It was his fault that he could not prevent Emilia's death which led to Puck changing forms.

All Subaru needed to do was to scream. A simple cry of a warning would have changed everything. Emilia and Puck would have lived and escaped. If they lived, their loss would not hurt people like Beatrice.

If Subaru was summoned to this world for a purpose, why was he so useless? He had no powers to save the ones that saved him. All he has is this ability to respawn from death. He can use magic, but his gate is extremely weak. He can swing a sword, but he stood no chance in actual combat, especially during practice against Reinhard.

What could he do? He had established himself as a butler of the mansion so he would be safe. However, what if another event like that night happened again? He can not fight to save anyone.

On that night, Subaru tinkered on the thought of using his power to act as bait or a sacrificial pawn. Unlike others, he can live again after being killed. However, the process of being killed scared Subaru, which prevented him from committing to the idea. Being gutted and frozen hurts a ton. Even after the revival, he felt weird sensations of pain lingering as if his body and mind did not register the sudden changes correctly.

With all of the theorizing and self-doubt, Subaru lulled himself to sleep as the exhaustion kicks in. Sleep is all he needed. Nothing else mattered to him currently.
