Hi guys! This chapter is the last one in the story, and it's quite long...
Start of Chapter
The next day
The victors woke up peacefully, looking at their surroundings in confusion. They were surrounded by white walls, hooked up to multiple machines. Then the victors realised exactly where they were. The hospital in the capitol, reserved only for victors. Katniss, being the youngest, woke up last, groaning, "Ugh. I feel so…" Suddenly, she vomited on the floor. "Oops," she laughed sheepishly, "Probably shouldn't have eaten so much…" She groaned and then vomited yet again. She hummed contently, "Where are we?" She looked around, eyes widening.
Her eyes narrowed and then closed again, flopping herself back onto the bed.
Suddenly, loud footsteps were heard coming nearer and nearer, then the door opened softly, but still made everyone's attention snap to it.
"Victors," he greeted casually.
"President. Snow," Katniss greeted back.
"I assume you know where you are."
"Yes, we're in the hospital."
"Katniss, you have been punished."
"What!? Why?"
"You know well why, you poached in the woods."
"To survive!"
"Yes, to survive, but you still did it, didn't you?" His eyes were icy cold.
"Yes, but if you didn't want us to poach, then how would we survive?"
"You wouldn't"
"Ok, so you were trying to kill us off."
"No, Miss. Everdeen, I was trying to make you a second time victor."
She chuckled then, "No, you were trying to sell me and make me look more valuable."
The victors gasped, and Finnick hissed at her, "He's going to punish you now!"
She snorted, "He already has."
She then turned towards the president again, "Who did you kill?"
"How bold of you to assume I killed someone." At her arched eyebrow, he replied, "Your sister, and you'd do well to follow my orders, or I'll find someone else you care about."
She snorted impolitely, "No thanks, I'll not follow your orders."
The victors gasped again, "What?"
She rolled her eyes, "I don't have anyone else I care about, so you can't threaten me, so I can do anything I like. Of course, you can kill me, but don't you think that'll be a little suspicious? I mean, seriously. But then again, you can't kill me in years or so, because I'm valued, whether I'm sold or not, and besides, if you kill me off, there'll be rebellion. And a pretty big one at that, too."
Snow's eyes widened despite himself, muttering things to himself, "Of course. I can't kill you, but what about your dear mother?"
Katniss snorted, "Sure. She's probably already half dead. You know, you killed Prim."
"You don't care about her?"
"She barely did anything. She barely helped, she barely fed, she barely worked, she was barely even conscious, why should I care what happens to her!?"
Snow shook his head, walking outside. As soon as his footsteps faded away, however, a single tear drop fell down her cheek.
"He killed her."
The victors could only watch as her eyes narrowed, wrapping her walls around her more tightly. Once she was finished, her face was devoid of all emotions, eyes showing nothing at all. There was absolutely no sign of life except her breathing. No shaking, no clenched fist, no, her position was natural.
The interviews
"Hello, Katniss. How are you? I heard of the horrid death of your little sister."
"Hi, Caesar. I'm fine," she said with an emotionless face and voice.
There was silence for a moment, before Caesar replied, "Are you sure?"
She chuckled sarcastically, "What do you think?"
"…No?"
Her face morphed back into one completely devoid of emotion. She walked off the stage, not even caring that everyone stared at her after she had walked off.
"Hello, Johanna. What do you think of Katniss' sudden attitude change?"
She snorted, "That's not for me to talk about. But honestly, Prim was her whole world. And now…with her gone, you know…that happened."
Caesar nodded, grateful she had answered him properly, "And what about her reaction?"
"Well, I don't know why you're talking to me about this, we aren't even close friends."
"Well, you bonded together, am I correct?"
"Well, yes, I guess, but I don't know Katniss that well. The first thing I learnt about her, however, was that Prim was the most important thing to her, she was more important than life itself, and you know the 74th hunger games. She only won because she was determined to get back to her sister."
The rest of the questions weren't about Katniss, more about the survival and the experience.
"Hello, Finnick."
"Hi, Caesar," he said with a charming smile that had half the audience swooning, even though he had only said two words.
"Well, what do you think about Miss. Everdeen's reaction?"
"Why, Caesar, I'm not sure if you're going to ask everyone this question, but only Johanna, Haymitch and I really bonded with her, so I wouldn't waste your time asking the others. But honestly, her reaction was totally valid."
He nodded, "But what about when your family died on a vacation?"
"Well, I'm not sure exactly what happened. All I know however, was that it was terrible. Of course, I was something similar to Katniss so soon, but after a while, it fades into the background a little. However, I do know that Katniss and Prim were closer than me and my family, so she might take never get over it."
"Ok, and what happens if she doesn't?"
Finnick's face turned serious, "Then all her tributes will die, and she'll stay empty all her life, and then your beloved 'Girl on Fire' is gone." He shook his head, "She's heartbroken, and nothing anyone does will stop that, because no one will truly understand. I bet that absolutely no one would sacrifice their life for their brother or sister the way she had. Their bond was strong, and…if she never gets over it, then," he sighed shaking his head.
The rest of the interview was spent as Caesar asking pointless questions, and Finnick answering charmingly, making everyone in the audience pass out.
"Caesar," Haymitch greeted first.
"Haymitch, how are you?"
"I'm okay, and I assume you want to talk to me about Katniss?"
He nodded, "Oh well, you were…informed about my family's unfortunate death, weren't you? So…Sweetheart might turn into a drunk, doubt it though, she's stronger, which is worst."
"Why is it worse to be stronger?"
"Because then you can depend on yourself, but it also means your immediate reaction will be worse. She won't look to lean on anyone, if that's what you're asking."
"Well, how come she wasn't this affected by Peeta's death?"
Haymitch snorted, "Well, Peeta's death was fuel to the fire, it was one of the reasons she got back, and she had no time to think about him. She was thrown right into the victory tour, right? Well, it's probably all coming back to her now. You know, her sister's death, and Peeta's. It's probably coming back all at once, which is why it's so bad."
A few questions were asked to the other victors, and they all said about the same thing, "Prim was important to her…" "She might never recover." "Well, she's broken."
By the end of the interviews, the circumstances were clear. Katniss was broken or breaking quickly, and there was nothing they could do.
Katniss, meanwhile, was listening to the interviews, bored. Since when did it become all about her? She was outraged at Caesar, and Snow. But she didn't show it, she showed her emotionless face.
And despite what the victors said, she was not broken, no, she was too hungry for revenge. Her mission was to kill Snow, and somehow, she would.
At night
Katniss snuck into Snow's mansion late at night, narrowly missing peacekeepers. She knew that if he was found dead, her alibi was that she was too broken to have done it.
Sneaking around the mansion wasn't too hard, it was dark, and there were no cameras around, surprisingly, seeing how much he loved them. She smirked then, her teeth glistening in the dark, she poured the contents of a tube into food she found near his study.
She watched through a crack in the wall as the food was delivered directly to Snow, smirking when the server left the room, and Snow sniffed the food excitedly.
To her dismay, he set the food to the side, instead looking at paperwork, quickly skimming the words. Groaning, she waited till even later, when Snow finally decided it was time to eat.
He chewed slowly, having no problems with eating the food. However, upon seeing this, Katniss simply smirked. He had to digest the poison first, and then he'd die. It would probably take until the morning, unless something else happened.
She waited until morning, watching through the crack intently.
Suddenly, President Snow started being racked with coughs, screaming a few times, though not loud enough for anyone to know. His head hit the table with a loud thump, signalling him either passing out or dying.
Katniss walked to him, touching the base of his neck. No pulse, nothing. She smirked; President Snow was finally dead!
In the morning
The news of Snow's death had been surprising to say the least. The victors froze when they heard this, then their faces broke out into bright smiles, though tears were shed, finally being able to show all the emotion they had been hiding beneath their masks.
Each and everyone of them was interviewed in front of the whole of Panem, announcing the President's death.
Each of them had different reactions, varying from surprised to happy to joyous. Katniss', however, was the most surprising.
She suddenly broke out into a wild smile as soon as this was said, laughing maniacally almost immediately. Then, she composed herself into a simple bright smile, dazzling those in front of her.
"Well, that reaction was…different. Now, Katniss, what would you like to say?"
"Are you sad about his death?" Her eyes probed Caesar's, noticing he wasn't the slightest bit.
However, he tried to cover this up, nodding sadly and putting on a small smile on.
"No, you're not," she exclaimed. She turned to the viewers, "All those in the districts, except maybe one and two know exactly what the hunger games truly are."
"They're a chance to kill of children, and it's good Snow's dead, because now he can't kill anyone." At the surprised looks on the audience's faces, she laughed deeply, "Didn't you know? President Snow killed family who did something wrong. He killed Johanna's family, he killed Prim, he killed many, and you didn't pick up on it. She laughed again, "Hell, whoever killed him, thank you."
Caesar looked horrified at her reaction, mouth wide open and eyes panicking, "What?" She asked, irritated at him, "I know you didn't care for him either, he forced you to do your job. He forced Finnick into prostitution."
She rolled her eyes then, eyeing the peacekeepers on the stage, "I don't know why I should be saddened by his death. He ruled Panem for 75 years, fooling many in that amount of time. Why should I be sad? Because he can't kill more children? No way!"
The rest of the interview, she was extra talkative, informing everyone about what he had done, and finally, she finished with, "Everyone in my district hated Finnick, but they couldn't see why he was doing it. It was because he was forced to, not because he wanted to. He did it to protect a loved one, and for his own privacy, I won't tell you who."
Years later
Panem still hadn't got over Snow's effect, the victors still had nightmares, suffering the most. It had gotten better though, and they had decided to have a meeting again.
The victors had arrived at Katniss' house in district 12. "Come in," she had greeted repeatedly.
Johanna chuckled, slumping down in a couch, she was the last to arrive.
"Now, tell me, I still haven't figured out, though I have suspicions, did you kill Snow?"
Katniss rolled her eyes, "Why should I tell you? I have a valid alibi."
The victors scoffed in turn, Cashmere declaring, "Well, did you? We don't have the time for this!"
They laughed; they had all the time in the world now they weren't forced to do things.
Katniss chuckled cutely, "Of course I did! Who else would have? Besides, I was hungry for revenge, and now Panem is a better place."
Johanna nodded, humming, "Well, this is nice. You, me, other people, we all helped create a better place!"
Everyone laughed at the first part, Johanna still had it.
However, the second part was true, they had created a better place, once where the leaders were decided on by vote, one in which decisions were told to the citizens before they were confirmed, one where people were free.
The end.
