F.E.A.R.: First Encounter Assault Recon
Opening chapter for my attempt to do novelizations for the F.E.A.R. trilogy, regardless hope you enjoy it.
Disclaimer: I don't own F.E.A.R. or its characters.
Prologue
I finished suiting up, considering things. We had been called suddenly into action due to something crazy happening. Yet once again I found myself wondering, not about this upcoming mission, but about myself. I, have very little memory of my past. I know I am thirty-one and used to be a Special Forces Operative for the US Army until recently, when I joined my current group, The First Encounter Assault Recon, or F.E.A.R., was formed during 2002 as a covert branch of the United States Army's Special Forces to defend various national security interests against threats of a paranormal or supernatural nature, most notably Psionics. As such, F.E.A.R. and its select few operatives are rarely taken seriously, given the unbelievable nature of what they fight against.
Regardless, F.E.A.R. is an elite unit and has the prerogative to take military assets from other military branches such as the Air Force and the US Army. They have permission to use deadly force and heavy weapons against perceived threats. Weapons available to them include assault rifles, combat shotguns, and even rocket-propelled weaponry, as well as experimental energy weapon systems. They also have access to intelligence service systems such as the Hannibal-3 spy satellite. My position in this group was that of Point Man for the main squad, despite being new to the unit. I have no doubt this is due to the strange skills I possessed.
I was clad in a full F.E.A.R. uniform, a black tactical bodysuit with a black balaclava mask with red goggles and a khaki bulletproof vest, black gloves and boots. As for my skills, I seem to have this strange ability where, if in extreme danger, or if I concentrated really hard, everything around me seemed to slow down and move at a crawl, giving me an edge in combat. Quickly recovering myself I made my way to the briefing room, dwelling on one last mystery, what was my name, I didn't seem to remember ever having one. So given my current role in this team, Point Man would have to be a suitable name for now.
Entering the briefing room I saw the other members of the team. The two other field operatives were clad in similar uniforms to me but not wearing the mask or goggles, the nearest one was a man, a few years younger than me, his uniform was all the same khaki colour as the vest however, he also wore a communication headset. He had a shaved head and blue eyes, fair skin and a strong build, Spencer Jankowski, the weapons specialist. The other operative handed me a headset like the one Spencer and her were wearing. The operative was the female medic and forensics expert, wearing a dark grey uniform although without the vest, khaki elbow pads and her gloves had red index fingers. She was also younger than me, with tied back black hair and dark brown eyes, pale skinned with Asian features. Her name was Jin Sun-Kwon.
I nodded and put the headset on while noting the final member of the team, our team leader and coordinator, yet the only one not clad in uniform. Instead a khaki pants, a white long sleeved shirt with a dark red tie and a black bulletproof vest like me and Jankowski, brown shoes and short brown hair and brown eyes. He was middle-aged and sat at the desk by the computers, his name was Rodney Betters.
"Good, we're all here now. You got the brief details regarding the mission, but first, you need to see this." Rodney explained.
He played a video on the screen above us and we watched what looked like a massacre. The most prominent part of the video was a tall thin pale man, roughly a year younger than me or so, clad in khaki tactical pants and a red and grey military jacket and black boots, rather short black hair and blue eyes. The shocking part was he was crouched over the body of a man, he had blood all around his mouth and the man showed clear signs of having been eating, the man was eating his victim. We also saw several black tactical suit clad soldiers around too. It was clear this was the attack we had heard about and been called in for, although why we were needed rather than any other Special Forces teams I didn't understand.
Turning to us, Rodney began to explain.
"This whacko's name is Paxton Fettel. He's the key. If we contain him, we contain the situation."
Jankowski grimaced. "Fucker's got an appetite."
"I think he has an agenda." Jin remarked. "It's not just recreational. He's getting something out of it."
"Essential vitamins and nutrients?" Jankowski joked.
Jin shook her head. "What's his story?"
"Property of Armacham Technology Corporation. They're working on a military contract to develop an army of clones that respond to a psychic commander." Rodney explained. "Top secret, of course. Fettel is one of the commanders."
"You've gotta be freaking kidding me. This is why nobody takes us seriously. Military clones?" Jankowski complained.
"A full battalion of them." Betters revealed. "Highly trained and heavily armed."
That caught my attention too, a battalion, that would make things more complicated to be sure.
"A battalion!" Jankowski gasped. "What are we supposed to do against a thousand super soldiers?"
"Like I said, we put Fettel down, and it's over. Fortunately, the whole point of the program is to give commanders first-hand knowledge of the battlefield without putting them in danger." Rodney explained. "That means we should be able to corner the bastard without having to wade through all those soldiers."
"How do we find him?" Jin asked.
"Armacham implanted a transmitter in his head. It should lead us right to him." Betters told us.
Jankowski scoffed. "That's awfully convenient."
"Assuming it does what it's supposed to." Betters remarked.
We all considered our next move, we were about to be deployed after all.
After a brief pause, Rodney looked up at me.
"What about you buddy? Ready to go to work?" He queried.
At which point Jankowski also looked at me, incredulous.
"You're putting him in the field? Are you crazy?" Jankowski complained. "He just transferred
in a week ago!"
"You've seen his training results. His reflexes are totally off the charts. I think he can handle himself." Rodney replied firmly.
I glared at Jankowski too and he seemed to back down, albeit grumbling.
"Whatever, man. It's your call."
Rodney glared at him. "Damn right it is!"
Jin smiled at me however and nodded.
"Don't worry, you'll be fine." She said.
I just nodded, already prepared for the mission.
Betters nodded too. "Let's roll."
So with that we made our way to get our weapons and to prepare for our insertion into the mission zone.
End of chapter, hope you enjoyed it, read and review please.
