I do not own Avatar: The Last Airbender
My Grandmother Used to Tell me Stories About the Old Days
"Katara!" A voice called.
Katara giggled silently. Hiding outside the igloo was a great idea.
"Katara!" The voice called again, "Katara, I'm not kidding! It's time for bed!"
But Katara ran down the path, laughing. She hoped her grandmother couldn't hear the laughter.
"Oh, come one, must we do this every night? I'm tired of this, Katara, come to bed."
Her grandmother approached the door of the igloo. Katara ran, but her foot caught on something, and she fell into the snow.
"There you are!" Grangran said.
Katara tried to run again, but her grandmother's arms closed around her and lifted her off the ground. Katara squirmed.
"Settle down," Said Grangran impatiently, "It's time for bed."
"But, Grangran!" Katara insisted, "I'm not tired, really I'm not."
"It doesn't matter, you're going to bed."
Katara sighed. She wasn't tired! If she wasn't tired why should she go to bed?
"Grangran, can you tell me another bedtime story?" She asked.
"No." her grandmother said, "Not tonight."
"Please!" Katara begged, she loved her grandmother's stories.
Grangran sighed, but Katara saw her smile.
"All right, one story."
She cheered, and Grangran laughed, "let's get inside."
She pulled Katara through the door.
"There you are," Mom said, smiling a warm smile, "It's time for bed! What were you doing?"
"Trying to get Grangran to tell me a story." Katara said truthfully.
Her Mom laughed, "Did it work?"
She nodded.
"Why do you want a story, Katara?" Sokka asked, "Just go to bed!"
"Sokka, do you want to listen?" Mom asked.
Sokka hesitated, then said, "Okay! Why not?"
"What story do you want to hear?" Grangran asked.
"One about the days when the avatar was still alive and there was no war." Said Katara sleepily.
She was a little tired. Grangran smiled, "All right."
"When there was an avatar, times were incredible. You never had to worry about being attacked by the Fire Nation, because they cooperated with the avatar too."
"The Fire Nation cooperated?" Sokka asked, sounding shocked.
"Well, yes." Grangran said, "And the avatar made sure of that. It was his job to make sure that war didn't start. He was the peacemaker."
"The peacemaker." Katara repeated, liking the feeling of it. There was a peacemaker, you didn't have to worry about war.
"Yes, so…"
Katara and Sokka's mother listened too. She listened to her children's squeals of delight when they heard something exciting, and laughter when something comical happened. She smiled. Children would be children. Loving to be fascinated by stories.
Katara and Sokka really get into stories of peace quickly, Grangran thought as she looked at her granddaughter and grandson's sleeping bodies, It'll be the death of them yet.
