Writer's Notes: Thank you Roxhall, ceres, Siren, Ceiros, and Msmallory for your reviews! I wanted to throw some historical pieces out there to keep in mind while reading.(I am a historian after all professionally) Medieval Scotland saw a lot of change. I feel that Outlander does a great job capturing some of the historical values Scotland had during the 18th century. Outlander does have some historical accuracies, even if some of the events are loosely based on actual events. I hope that everyone can appreciate the Scottish history as much as I do. It's my area of expertise and I am very fond of medieval Scottish history. I couldn't write my stories without all of your support! I appreciate all of you and hope to continue on this adventure with all of you! As always, don't forget to follow, favorite, and review!
[Castle Leoch: 6 Days later]
Six days passed since Bella went back in time. Six days of traveling with a bunch of Scottish men. There was plenty of banter and crude behavior that they were reminded to tone down because there was a lady present, though Bella didn't mind it. She said as much, but Dougal would grunt and just stare at the fire. Jamie was curious about her. He didn't know much of the colonies and most Scotsmen didn't. Not unless they traveled frequently to and from the colonies, though living at sea could prove to be dangerous, especially during these times. Jamie hadn't invaded her privacy with her bag. She kept an eye on her bag because she didn't want the technology from 2022 getting out. She didn't know how it would affect the timeline. If there was a timeline. She didn't know anything about time travel, though she had watched enough movies to know that if you get trapped back in the past, that you shouldn't try to change anything. It can have a disastrous affect on the future. Unless this was a weird time paradox and the timeline she was on was a branch from the original one. She made herself dizzy thinking about all the possibilities. She was just going to keep her head down and leave a minimal footprint for this time period.
Now they were at the castle. She tried to remember the way here. She knew that if she wanted to get back to her time, that the stones at Craigh na Dun were the key. Though, she was slightly confused with the journey here, especially when she fell asleep riding with Jamie. She woke one night, leaned against his hard chest.
"Alright. Take her to Glenna so she can clean up before seeing Colum." Dougal ordered Jamie.
Jamie nodded. "Aye, we'll go see Glenna." He said and then helped Bella off the horse. He unstrapped her bag for her and handed it to her. She was still wobbly, so Jamie steadied her and then helped get her to Glenna, the woman that was family to Murtagh and a beacon of light there at Castle Leoch.
"Glenna," Jamie called out, when him and Bella reached the kitchen quarters.
A woman appeared, heavy and round, her nose pushed up a little pug like. Her eyes were old and grey and her hair was graying. She wore a bonnet on her head and an apron around her waist where she could dry her hands while she prepared food in the kitchen. "Jamie Fraser, look at you. Gracing me with your presence upon your return. Oh, you have a bonnie lass with you. Hello, I'm Glenna."
Bella smiled at the woman. She was hearty and friendly. Bella appreciated her smiles. "Hi, I'm Bella."
"Found her on our travels. She was attacked by a red coat. She sprained her ankle good. I wrapped it tight, but ye might need to look at it. Get her cleaned up. Dougal wants to present her to Colum." Jamie explained.
"Aye, well, let's get you in a bath and clothed." Glenna said cheerfully. "Go on Jamie, I'll hunt ye down later." She said, shooing Jamie away.
Bella watched Jamie leave, smiling at him before he did. She followed Glenna, hobbling, but she managed. "Thank you for your help." She said as they came to a room. Glenna shut the door and then stirred some coals in a stove. There was a hand pump for some water and she went to that next, using a wooden bucket to move the water into a large basin.
"Get undressed my dear, I'll have ye bath ready for ya when yer through." Glenna said with a wave of her hand.
Bella nodded, shrugging off the cloak and her bag. Glenna glanced up to see Bella's strange attire.
"Dressed like a lad and in strange garments too." Glenna said. "Where are ye from my dear?"
"The colonies. New fashion." Bella said what she had told Jamie previously when they first met.
Glenna just nodded, before stirring the coals again. Bella undressed quickly trying to make it less awkward. Glenna looked back at Bella and looked down at her wrapped ankle. "Let's take this off and have a look." She said and stooped down and unwrapped her ankle. The bruising was turning, taking on a yellowish hue. "It's healing well. Shouldn't take more than a few more days, though it'll be sore for a time." She said and stood. "Go on, get in the tub. I'll get ye some clothes." She said and then disappeared.
Bella looked at the large basin and sighed before she climbed in. She was surprised at the heat of the water, but she sighed, welcoming the heat on her skin. Her muscles ached from riding the horse with Jamie. The tension in her shoulders seemed to melt away with the heat of the water as well, though she wished for some of her bath bombs from home that she could throw into the tub with her to cover the stench of horse and travel. She closed her eyes, relaxing for a bit before the door opened and closed. She opened her eyes to see Jamie.
"My apologies Miss." Jamie said quickly, turning around. "It's been some time since I've been back at the castle, they must have made this room a bath."
Bella sunk into the water a little, minimizing her exposure. "It's okay. Um. Glenna went to get clothes."
"Aye, she'll take care of ya. How is yer ankle?" Jamie asked, his back still turned.
"She said it's healing. Thank you for your help. I appreciate it." Bella said and studied Jamie from behind. He was broad shouldered. She knew that he was strong, but looking at him from behind was different. He was strong and she realized now that he kept his hair pulled back more into a ponytail at his neck. The brilliant auburn hair reminded her of her mother's. She missed her mom and wondered if she was missing from her time or if there was just a placeholder. She didn't know how time travel worked. She was eager to figure out how to make it back to 2022. She missed her modern amenities that she grown accustomed to over her near twenty years on this earth.
Jamie blew out a breath. "Alright, well I'll go and look for the pantry elsewhere." He said and started to leave.
"W-wait." Bella said without thinking that through.
Jamie hesitated, his hand on the handle of the large wooden door.
"Um, who is Colum?" Bella asked. She heard Jamie say Colum to Glenna earlier.
"My uncle. He's the laird of this castle." Jamie supplied. "I'll fetch ya when yer through." He said and then left before Bella could say another word.
Bella sighed, reaching up to brush hair out of her face. The water was still warm, which surprised her. She thought that the heat wouldn't hold in the large wooden basin, but she was wrong.
A little while later, Glenna returned with fresh clothing for her to wear. She helped Bella out of the bath, drying her off with some linens and then helped get the garments on. She looked at the fashion and Bella recalled in a book she read, that this sort of fashion was typical between 17th and 18th century Scotland. She wondered more of the time period and the exact year.
"Glenna."
"Yes lass?" Glenna said as she tied Bella's corset from behind.
"In the colonies, things are different."
"Aye, I'd say by the way ye dressed. Dressed as a lad," Glenna shook her head, clicking her tongue.
Bella swallowed. "I don't know much of Scotland. I was traveling in Inverness with my mother before… we got separated. She's the expert on Scotland. She's… Scottish." She said. It wasn't a lie. Her mom had Scottish heritage, so because of that, her mother sought out the histories in Scotland.
"Ah, I see. Had ye in the colonies. Raised there I presume."
"Yes. So, she was telling me stories… about Queen Mary."
"Mary Stewart?" Glenna asked, arching a brow.
Bella nodded hoping to see if Glenna could help her zero in on the year, she was trapped in. She knew that she was post Stewart reign but how far after Mary's beheading, she just wasn't sure.
"Well, she was a Queen that Scotland would like to forget." Glenna said with a nod. "Though some would say that the Stewarts still belong on the throne here." She said and blew out a breath, finishing tying Bella's corset.
Bella turned to look at Glenna. "How long has she been dead?"
Glenna thought about it. "Hmm. I suppose about 150 years or so. She was beheaded in…1587. It's 1743 now. I'm not too great with the mathematics."
"156 years." Bella murmured. Glenna had told her the exact year, which was more than what she hoped for. If she was in 1743, then that meant she was smack dab in the middle of what would be one of the deadliest parts of history for Scotland. She frowned, hating that many people would lose their lives. She remembered much of her mother's lectures, most had been on Queen Mary, but her mother often spoke about how Mary's lineage affected history. How the Stewart legacy didn't exactly die off with James VI. That there was a Jacobite uprising, that would see the death of the clans in Scotland.
"Aye, I suppose yer good with mathematics. Smart lass ye are." Glenna said with a smile. "Let's do something with that hair of yours before you meet the laird."
Bella nodded, her mind still reeling from discovering the year she was stuck in. She needed to get back to her time. Somehow, someway.
