Marcy and the Frogs

Chapter 1: Marcy or Spirit

Here in a world, a world called Amphibia. Home to all of amphibians like frogs, toads, and newts, and also some bugs. It was that night in a swampy forest as the red moon glow shines upon them. Deep in the forest where frogs like townsfolks are having their dinner at a diner made out of log with windows and roofs on top with the sign says "Stumpy's", float atop a huge Lilypad on water. Just then, a one-eyed frog named Wally, walks out of Stumpy's Diner just to greets some frogs sitting nearby.

"Goodnight, you frogs! See you in the morrow."

Wally bumps into something like trips over some barrels before making his way down the road making a barrel roll as the frogs are laughing at him. Wally got back up on his feet as he hops over the rock, as he ignores the laughs. Wally is walking in the forest with fog all around him and playing his accordion while humming as he sings.

At nighttime, it is very peaceful at first, but when there's danger like wild creatures, no one could ever reach out from the forest alive. Then all of sudden, Wally stops playing his accordion when he hears some bushes rustle and a twig crack, making him startling.

"Hello?"

Wally looked around to see if anything like creatures lurks around the bush. He started to feel nervous until the wind blows. Wally turns around as he started to panic.

"What's that?"

Wally is feeling scared while holding his accordion. As he walk backwards, until he bumps into something and turns around, but was shocking him that he could see a shadow figure with two glowing white eyes. Wally grew his one eye wide, frightfully shocked as the frog screams.

"AAAH! No no no no! NOOOO!"

The next day, the people or frogs in the village where a place called Wartwood, doing their typical work and regular business. A butcher Amphibian cuts a centipede looking creature which screeches. Two frog couples are about to share their kiss by the fountain, but the huge dragonfly just flew right in to snatch the male frog away from the female frog as he yells. Nobody is paying attention.

A female yellow frog with flowers braid on her hair is going to the Grub & Go with her daughter who is also has the same color as her mother. Two children that are playing as they giggles. A bakery is baking the bread with some insects. An axolotl with his goggles is doing his woodcraft for his shop. An elder lady is holding her pet spider like a pet.

They finally, a snail appears carrying a cart with a family known as the Plantars. Hop Pop, an eldest frog and grandfather of the family, Sprig, a 10 year old frog who wants to go out for an adventure, and Polly, the little pollywog who is wearing her yellow polka dot on her head, sitting in her bucket. She was only a baby, but more mature than her brother.

The snail, Bessie has arrived, while carrying Hop Pop, Sprig, and Polly in it while trying to eat a leaf on a fishing pole-like stick. Hop Pop gently slow his snail down to a halt, then he turn his face at Sprig and

"All right, kids I'm gonna do a little shoppin'. You watch the cart." said Hop Pop.

"You got it, Hop Pop! I'll defend this cart with my LIIIIIIIFE!" Sprig proudly claims to watch over, but Hop Pop cuts him off.

"Sprig, I was talking to Polly."

"What? Polly's a baby!"

"You're a baby!" Polly retorted.

"Polly's got more responsibility in her little flipper than you have in your entire body!" said Hop Pop.

"Ridiculous. What makes you think I'm irresponsible?" Sprig scoffed.

"Oh gee. Let me think. You blow up our breakfast with some cherry bombs, then you borrowed Mrs. Croaker's cowapillar to crash through my bedroom, and you left the lights turned on to attract some fireflies!"

"Okay. So yesterday was a bad day."

"Mm-hmm. Polly, make sure Sprig stays in the cart."

Hop Pop jumps off the cart and walk towards to Grub & Go for shopping. Sprig wants to be a responsible kid. More mature than his sister. He sighed sadly as he slide down to the wooden cart.

"(sigh) Wish there was a way to prove I'm not such a goof-up."

But suddenly, Sprig heard a scream. From the edge of the town, One-Eyed Wally burst out from the forest, wailing to get everyone's attention.

"Spirit! An evil spirit! Shut the windows! Lock the door! Shelter your young and old!" Wally yells.

The whole town has gathered. Then a toad, Mayor Toadstool who runs this town as a mayor, followed by his assistant, Toadie who is a short and small, light green frog as they both approach to Wally.

"Now, simmer down Wally. Just tell us what you saw." said Mayor Toadstool calmly.

"Oh, it was horrible! There was a an evil spirit in the woods! I saw it with my one eye!"

Wally picked up a stick and start drawing where everyone can see, but Sprig can't see a thing. Once Wally is done drawing, he put a leaf on a head.

"It had a huge head, A weird, stubby bump right in the middle of its face and long spindly limbs! It has claws on the book!"

"Book?" Mayor Toadstool raise his eyebrows.

"Yes, but I have no idea what the spirit was doing, but the way I looked to its eyes by written down or drawing, its going to take away my soul on the page! I'll be trapped forever!"

The crowd murmur. What Wally said is true, then they were afraid what would happen if their soul was taken away. Then Mayor Toadstool steps up.

"Then we better chase an evil spirit away before it could hurt somebody. Because for Mayor Toadstool, your safety comes first!"

Toadie raised a banner behind Toadstool before the crowd applauds.

"Well, it's the responsible thing to do." said Wally.

"Great plan!" said The butcher.

"Repeat responsible a few times." said The bystander.

Sprig is starting to think what would they might do, but then he got an idea.

"Polly, I just had a great idea. I am going to chase that spirit and save the town."

Sprig was about hop off, but Polly stops him in front.

"Stop right there! Hop Pop said that you had to stay in this cart. You know you can't take me!" Polly flexes her muscles.

"Oh, Polly. Look what I got?"

Sprig took something out from his pocket and shows Polly some candies. She formed her hungrily grinned.

"Bribe accepted!"

Sprig set the candies down before Polly jumps off from her bucket and starts to chomp on the candies. This gives him a chance go after the spirit after he jumps off to the forest where Wally burst out. Polly pops up from the wagon, seeing her brother runs off into the forest.

"Don't die!"

Somewhere in the deep forest, Sprig is running along in a forest. He search through the log, then he pops out of a log when finds a bug in his hair, and then eats it. His plan is to drive away the spirit to prove Hop Pop that he is fully responsible and then one day, he'll be everyone's true hero. Sprig then readies a slingshot in order to be ready if he found a spirit.

"Hmm. I know you're out there. And I'm not afraid to use this."

Then suddenly, he heard a twig snaps. He spins around to aim his slingshot to where that sounds coming from. He must've thought he heard something. Sprig looks very cautious, but the last thing he remembers what Wally said about the spirit. Then he started to talk nervous out loud.

"Hello? Strange, but wise spirit."

Then he heard a rustle. He quickly aim his slingshot at the bush where it shakes. He started to look afraid, but he refuse to abandoned his plan to prove that he is responsible. And then, what really shock him the most when he gasps.

There was a creature like figure that has raven hair, wearing a grey-blue colored hoodie with a small "SJMS" emblem stitched across the chest as well as a bigger one on the back, short green skirt, and a pair of brown school shoes. It also wears something like a backpack and is holding a book while writing it.

Until then, when it lowered the book down, it looked at Sprig with a curiosity look. It has green barrette, pink flower, and a stick on it. Sprig couldn't believe his own eyes with wide open. It was all silence for a second until it started to speak.

"Oh, hello little guy."

"(gasp) Giant head! Spindly limbs! Face bump! The book! EVIL SPIRIT!" Sprig screams.

The creature looked confused at first.

"Evil spirit?" It raised it's eyebrows with a high pitch voice.

"Please! Don't take away my soul! I didn't mean to come to this far to prove myself that I'm responsible! Please! Have mercy!" Sprig close his eyes, thinking that his souls might take away.

"Hey, hey. It's okay. I'm not gonna hurt you."

Sprig open his eyes with shocked. The creature looks calm. He was confused of all sudden.

"Y-you're not... gonna take me my soul?" Sprig asked, but looked a little scared.

"No, of course not. Why would I?" It replied.

"Well, you tried to take Wally's soul."

"Oh, is that what his name? I tried to ask Wally for help, but he ran off screaming the moment he saw me."

"That does sound like Wally..."

But suddenly, they both heard a screech. It looked back where the screech comes from, but it grew its eyes wide open and gasp. They could see the trees falling over

"(gasp) It's coming back!"

"What is it?" Sprig asked.

Without answering his question, it put away the book in its bag, then it grab Sprig's arm as he yelps and ran off when the screech comes closer. Sprig was spooked of all sudden.

"Wait! Where are you taking me?!"

"In here!"

It ducks under the log just in time to hide from what's coming. They peeked to the hole when The monster, a giant red mantis, passes by. It won't be long until the mantis gone, then they sighed with relief. But then, it hit him when he realize that the creature has saved him. No one has ever been saved by this creature before.

"You... you saved me! You're not a spirit at all! You're a hero! An ugly, ugly, ugly hero!"

"Aw, thank you. But I'm not that kind of ugly." It thanked Sprig.

"Ha ha! You're not some sort of spirit, are you?

"Oh, no. I'm just a girl. My name is Marcy Wu. What's your name, little frog?"

Marcy offered a handshake, then Sprig accepted his handshake.

"I'm Sprig Plantar. Put 'er there!"

Once they let go, Marcy felt her hand was covered in slime, but she giggles.

"It looks very slimy, but mucus."

"Huh. How about that."

Then suddenly, her stomach growls. This could only mean one thing.

"Oh, looks I'm hungry. So, Sprig. You got anything to eat?" Marcy asked.

"Sure do!" replied Sprig.

He lifts up a section of the log. Bugs are crawling around underneath. Marcy take the beetle and looked at. She looks hesitated at first. When she took bite out of it, but then she brightened. At least it taste really good.

"Hmm. Taste like chicken." said Marcy with her mouthful.

"You like bugs?" Sprig smiled.

"Well, a little. You got any mushrooms?"

Sprig started to think first when he took an insect and eat it in his mouth. Then it really it him as he smiles.

"I got it! C'mon! Follow me!"

Sprig comes out from the log. Marcy smiles and she crawls out from the log and ran after him.

Back in Wartwood, Hop Pop has finished shopping by getting some more food, but came to a halt when he saw Mayor Toadstool has gathered the whole town with torches and pitchforks, shovels and scythes. They were chanting with anger as they formed as an angry mobs. Hop Pop chuckled while shaking his head.

"Heh. Another day, another mob."

Hop Pop walk towards where Bessie is resting to check on his grandkids, but he didn't noticed at first.

"Come on kids, time to- What the?!"

What really shock him is when Polly was full after eating all of the candy, but Sprig was not present. Then Polly just perked up that Hop Pop is back.

"I don't have a candy problem! You have a candy problem!"

"Polly, where's Sprig?" Hop Pop asked with his stern looks.

"I don't know! He just ran off to chase off the spirit!" Polly answers.

When they took noticed, Wally noticed that Hop Pop is asking Polly as he feared.

"Oh, if your boy went into the woods, he's as good trapped in a book. Forever."

"Forever?" Hop Pop repeated then he realize that his grandson just ran off to chase off the spirit.

"Not on my watch!" Hop Pop picked up Polly from his wagon and ran off to the forest to save his grandson. "Hang in there boy! Hop Pop's a-comin'!"

"You heard Hopediah! Let's drove out an evil spirit! Forever!" Mayor Toadstool declares.

"YEAH!"

Then Mayor Toadstool led the whole mob to the forest to save Sprig before an evil spirit will take his poor unfortunate soul to lock him up by the page.

Back at the forest, Sprig has gathered some mushrooms as he can find while Marcy is writing down on her journal with some stickers on it when sitting on the rock. Just then, Sprig set some mushrooms down before he sits down on the rock.

"Here you go! Mushrooms!"

Marcy put down her notes and smile. She picks up a mushroom and took a small bite, but then she brightens when it taste so good!

"Mmm! This is so good! just like vegetables!" Marcy chimes before she ate the whole mushroom.

"Glad you liked it. Now, first question. What the heck are you, and where did you come from?!" Sprig happily ask as he eager to know who or what she is.

"I'm a human being and I come from another world called Earth!" Marcy answered.

"Whoa! What's that?"

"It's where I come from. Earth is a birthplace for a human race where dinosaurs were once ruled until the meteor crash and drove them into extinct, but then is where humans are born along with the animals."

"Wow! What's a dinosaur?"

"It means terrible lizards, but you can call prehistoric reptiles for short."

"Cool! Are they dangerous?"

"It was, but they went extinct for over 65 million years."

"Woooow... do you know how you got here?" Sprig asked curious.

"Well, last night I was at my friend's house to celebrate her birthday. When I showed the box to her and when she opens it, but then all of sudden... poof! Then I was here." Marcy explained her small story. "So what about you? What are you been doing in the woods?"

Then Sprig started to get nervous when he forgot something for what he's originally planning to do.

"Me? Oh, uh... Proving that I'm responsible!" Sprig nervously answered.

"Really? Like what?"

Before Sprig could reply, but all of sudden, he heard a shout.

"THERE THEY ARE!"

Marcy and Sprig turns their heads at where everyone comes out with their angry mob supplies. One-Eyed Wally is leading Toadstool, Toadie, and anyone else where they've found them. Marcy grew her eyes wide with shock.

"IT'S THE EVIL SPIRIT THAT I WAS TELLING ABOUT!" Wally yells.

Sprig looked shocked that Hop Pop was here with Polly on top of him, but they stopped and gasp. Thinking that Marcy has captured Sprig.

"(gasp) SPRIG! GET AWAY FROM THAT SPIRIT!" Hop Pop cried.

"What?! No! You guys got it all wrong!" Sprig protested.

"Out of the way, boy. You know what's good for you." said Mayor Toadstool holding his pitchfork.

Marcy look frighten at first, but she has no idea what to say. She was too focus on the angry mobs rather than looked betrayed.

"Wait! Don't hurt her! She's not an evil spirit!" Sprig cried.

Then suddenly, they heard a screech when a huge green praying mantis shows up. Everyone gasps and screams.

"Hurry! Everyone! Mantis formation!" Mayor Toadstool ordered.

Then everyone except Hop Pop and Polly formed a mantis formation to scare the praying mantis until it frightfully crawls away from the mob.

"We scared it off!" Hop Pop smiles.

"We have power!"

Everyone cheers, thinking that they scared away a praying mantis. But suddenly a red praying mantis shows up, twice the size than the green one. They're all looked at the mantis when shocked.

"Nope. That scared it off." said Polly.

"Yeah, that makes more sense." Hop Pop added.

The red praying mantis screech before it swipe its claws to take out some frogs as they all falls off and then they panic and run into the bush including Hop Pop and Polly.

"It's gonna eat our guts!" Wally screams.

Marcy was completely shocked that red mantis was huge. She looks very frightened. Sprig took a glance at her, knowing that she's scared. He let his guard down for not telling her the truth.

"It's back! What do we do?!" Marcy panicked.

"I'll distract that thing. You get out of here." replied Sprig.

"What about you?!"

"It's my fault that I lead them right to you and now I'm gonna fix it!"

Sprig took his slingshot out, then he pick up some mud, and fling right to the mantis eyes as it looked at screeching.

"Hey! Ugly! Come and get me!"

Sprig fires his slingshots with mud, but it has no effect on the mantis. It swipe its claw at Sprig that he dodge by jumping up high. The mantis shrieks in anger when the frog lands.

"Ha! You missed me!" Sprig taunted.

But without a warning, it swipe its claw again until it hit Sprig as he launch and fell making Marcy shocked.

"SPRIG!" Marcy screams.

The mantis is clicking sound when it looks hungry. Marcy has to think fast before it crawls closer to Sprig. She cannot let the giant praying mantis to the poor little frog. Then she noticed that there was a torch lying on the ground after one of the mob must've dropped when attack. Marcy rush to pick it up to exam the torch and then took a glance at the mantis that's getting closer.

Then it she got an idea. She rush over to looked through her backpack to find something, and then she pulls out something like a hairspray. It's perfect. She knows excactly what to do. When Sprig regain his conscious, but what shocking him is that it's already too late when the mantis shrieks before it raise its claws.

"Aaah!" Sprig screams.

But suddenly, flame bursts when injuring the mantis. Sprig was stunned at first, but then he turns around and saw Marcy who is holding her hairspray and a torch. He was fully surprised that she saved his life twice, but didn't notice that her eyes flashes green. Marcy positioned the torch in front of her hairspray when she looks defensive.

"Stay back!"

The mantis screech at Marcy angrily, but she refuse to back down.

"I'm warning you! Stay back!"

Marcy spray her hairspray, but blows at the mantis like a flamethrower by blinding its eyes. The giant praying mantis back away while Marcy keeps spraying with fire going. Sprig couldn't believe his eyes. The not-so-spirit girl is protecting him. Hop Pop, Polly, and the rest of the frogs slowly comes out from the bush as they have witnessed, thinking that Marcy cast a spell.

As soon as the flame goes on, but the mantis looks very angry and swiping its claw, but looked blinded when she cease fire and dodge the attack. The praying mantis repeatedly swiping its claws to attack Marcy while taking a step back until he bumps against the tree. She knew that she got right where she wanted.

As the mantis got too close with smoke all over its face, Marcy toss the torch at the mantis when it hits in the eye as it screech before it swipes it claws, then she dodge on right on time before it slices off the tree branch as it started to fell on its head. When the mantis started to tumble with a pain screech, but then it land its head on a hard rock when bone cracked its head, with two x's on its eyes.

Everyone gasp and looked shock. They move their eyes at Marcy who was panting after she got up back to her feet, dusting herself off. She turns her head the frogs that were still shocked with fear in their eyes. Marcy realized that they're still afraid of her. She needs to come up with something by being friendly towards them, but shakingly calm.

"Is everyone okay?" Marcy asked when calm, but her words were cut off by Wally's cried.

"Witch! She controls the fires!"

"She'll destroy us all!" Toadstool panicked.

"RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!" Toadie screams.

Everyone rans off screaming as they ran off through the forest. A female frog panicked while picking up her daughter who's not afraid, but stunned as the mother hurries off protectively with her child. A muscled frog looked at his bottle with stun before he pours it out and ran off, knowing that he can't drink another round.

As the forest was empty, leaving Marcy and Sprig alone in the open space with a red giant mantis lies dead. Hop Pop rushed out from the bush with Polly who was all stunned, before he tried to grab Sprig by his arms when cautious.

"C'mon, boy! Let's get out of here before she could burn us!"

But Sprig yank his arm off of his grandfather's hand.

"No! She's not an evil spirit! She's just lost and needs our help. We should take care of her."

Marcy looked touch. Sprig is defending her after everything she did to save him. Hop Pop looked shocked.

"What?! Are you out of your mind?!"

"Hop Pop, please. She saved me, twice. If it weren't for her, I'd be dead meat by a praying mantis." Sprig pleaded when trying to convince.

Hop Pop dropped his fear. He took a glance at the mantis who's lying dead with smoke steaming like fried food, then he looks back at Marcy with her innocent look. Maybe he felt guilty about the this poor creature. She looks very harmless. For Polly, however doesn't seems to be afraid. Despite that everything for what she saw was crazy. Can they blamed for her for this?

Hop Pop gently lift his granddaughter up from his head, then set her down to the ground, and walk closer to Marcy, but felt shaken a little with very calm and wise. Marcy raise her eyebrows a bit.

"So, uh... you saved my grandson's live, right?" Hop Pop asked.

"Yes, I did." Marcy calmly answered.

"Look, I'm sorry for falsely accused you for all the trouble, but after what you did was very brave and stood up against the praying mantis. I am truly grateful for saving my grandson."

Marcy formed her smile softly. No one has ever thanked her for once before.

"You're welcome. I'm Marcy."

"Well, Marcy. It was nice to meet you. I'm Hopediah Plantar, but my kids called me Hop Pop for short, and this is Polly, my granddaughter."

"Hi, what's up?" said Polly.

Marcy nodded. Sprig was glad that he got it all under control, but he dropped his smile thinking that Hop Pop might scold him for all the cause.

"Looks like I'm back to causing trouble for the family again, huh?" Sprig asked.

"Trouble? Sprig, standing up to the praying mantis to help this creature out was... Some of the bravest and most responsible stuff I've ever seen!" Hop Pop formed his smiles.

"That was pretty cool, Sprig. It was also really dumb!" Polly remarked.

"Yes. Really, really dumb."

"(gasp) You think I'm responsible?" Sprig asked when his hope is up.

"Well, yeah, I mean, just this one time..." Hop Pop answered.

"Yes! Woo hoo!" Sprig cheers with his victory dance.

"Well, don't get carried away..."

"Big win!"

"Well, it's been nice meeting you, but do you have a map where I can borrow so I can find my way out?" Marcy asked.

"Oh, a map won't be enough." Hop Pop pulled out his map to show Marcy where she's looking at. "This here valley is surrounded by mountains that are impenetrable this time of year."

"It should clear up in a couple of months." Sprig added.

"But until then, you try to cross those mountains-"

"You will die." Polly finish Hop Pop's sentences.

"That was pretty harsh, Polly."

Marcy dropped her smile. She couldn't help, but felt like she has no place to go when the whole valley was surrounded by mountains which it takes couple of months just to get out of here. She sighed when she gives in.

"(sigh) Well, guess I don't have much of a choice, huh?"

"I thought so. There's only one place where you can spend the night at the farm." said Hop Pop.

"Really? You lived in a farm?!" Marcy gasp when she formed her smile.

"That's right. Now follow me, before the sun goes down.

Hop Pop picked up the pollywog in his hand. Marcy and Sprig looked at each other before they gave each other a thumbs up while winking at their eyes. She picked up her backpack and left the forest with the Plantars, leaving the dead mantis behind. Not noticed before the body was dragged through the bush when it started to chomp it off and then we heard a bellowed burp.

Later that night at the Plantar's house, they all just got back with Bessie carrying them home. After they went inside, Hop Pop opens the trap door where he leads Marcy down to the basement, carrying the rolled up mattress until they reach the bottom from the stairs. Hop Pop taps the blue mushroom to turn on the light so that Marcy can settles in.

"All righty. Kitchen's upstairs. Breakfast at sunrise, sharp. If you need any questions, you know where to find me around the house." said Hop Pop.

"Got it. Thanks Hop Pop." Marcy thanked him.

"No problem. Well, goodnight."

Hop Pop walks upstairs to tuck Polly in. Sprig enters while carrying his stuffed toys just in time to see Marcy setting her backpack down while settling herself after taking off her shoes. Then she noticed that Sprig is here to see him when smiled.

"Hey! Gettin' comfy? Brought some toys to keep you company. I'm too old for these. O-oh, except for this one. Oh, and this one. Oops, this one too. Sorry. This one as well."

Sprig repeatedly when making up his mind after picking up his toys when Marcy giggles.

"I'm glad you're livin' with us, Marcy." said Sprig.

"Yeah, Me too, and thank you." replied Marcy.

"You're welcome. Goodnight. Sleep tight. Don't let the bed bug bites." Sprig walks upstairs with his toys carrying, not before he peek his head through the door way from the floor. "Seriously, they can drain a body in seconds."

Then Sprig close the door gently. Marcy she tapped the mushroom to turn it off. She took off her grey jacket to set it down next to her backpack when she only wears her light gray t-shirt underneath with "SJMS" emblem on it with green collar, then she looked through her bag when she pulls out a plushie that looks resembled to a green frog. Just like Sprig. She smiles as she remembers what she used to paly with, but then she sighed softly when she realize that she's all alone in the basement.

"Looks like I'm gonna be here for a while."

Marcy wraps herself with with a blanket when she yawns and then she drifted into sleep with her stuffed frog. She may be all alone in this strange world, but at least she has found a friend who is a wild talking frog with his sister and his grandfather. It's gonna be a long day for tomorrow to get used to living in a frog world.

So, what do you guys think? This is a start. This is where I based off of Swap AU for girls switching places. If anyone ask, I made up that version when frogs sees Marcy is a spirit rather than calling her the beast. I read from a fanfic from a different website called "A Witch In Wartwood" and it got me an idea. In the meantime, thanks for reading and I hope I can publish another chapter tomorrow. Have a good night and I'll be seeing you real soon!
