Arizona POV
"Mom? What are you doing here?"
"Mark called me late last night, telling me I need to get on a plane. He wouldn't tell me why. So I tried calling Callie but she didn't answer her phone."
"So you decided to catch a plane and see me. You could've called me mom."
She looks at me and gives me a knowing look.
"Arizona, are you gonna let me in?"
"Mom-"
She pushes the door open and walks in. She takes in the scene of my apartment.
"Arizona what the hell is going on? Where is Callie?"
"Mom sit down. I need to tell you something and it's no use in lying."
She takes a seat in the kitchen.
"Okay, a few days ago I cheated on Callie."
"What!"
"I know I'm a fucking idiot. Anyways she was outside helping people from a burning bus during a storm. While I was upstairs breaking my vows. When she walked into the NICU, she saw my wedding ring pinned to the woman scrub top. And she instantly knew. I'm also on unpaid leave because I'm an unfit doctor. Which is true since I left my Peds wing to screw some person that wasn't my wife."
"Arizona.."
"So she packed up and left. Mom what am I going to do?"
My mother stands up and walks around the kitchen. "You know, I knew something was wrong. For almost a year you wouldn't talk to us, but Callie would call every week and update us. Event though she said you were getting better. Almost to you're normal self. I knew something was wrong. I could feel it. Arizona I can't believe you. What's going on with you?"
"Mom, I'm fine."
"Look around, what about this is fine? Your apartment looks like it's been robbed. You have glass shattered everywhere. Your wedding picture is broken. Your amazing wife left you. Your job deemed you as unfit. And you're drunk."
"I'll be fine."
"You sit down and you listen to me. You may be a grown woman who makes her own choices, but look where that's gotten you. Callie loved you Arizona. Loved you more than anything. I don't think I know one person that loves as hard as her. Do you know how much she loves you?"
"Of course."
"No, I don't think you do. Do you remember the first time we met her?"
"Of course I do."
Flashback
"Babe, stop bouncing. It looks like you need to use the bathroom."
"I'm sorry, I'm just nervous that's all."
"Don't worry, they're gonna love you."
"You're right. Parents they love me. I'm good with parents. Well besides my own."
"Calliope."
"I know, I'm sorry. I'm just nervous."
Just then my parents walk in. My mother runs up and hugs me.
"Hey sweetie, we missed you."
"I missed you too."
"Hey dad."
"Zona, look at you. Finally filling yourself out. It's good not see skin and bones."
"Yeah, you can thank my girlfriend for that."
Callie walks besides me. "Mom, dad. This is my beautiful girlfriend, Callie. Calliope this is my parents Barbra and Daniel Robbins."
"Nice to meet you Mr. and Mrs. Robbins."
"Please call me Barbra."
"You can call me Colonel." My dad says sternly.
"You got it Colonel." Calle says immediately causing all of us to chuckle, including my dad.
We walked to the cafeteria, grabbing all of us a coffee.
"So Callie, tell us about yourself."
"Well, I'm from Miami. My family still lives there. I love to sing and dance. On my free time I love to cook. I don't bake though. I can't bake for shit. I mean I'm not a good baker." She corrects herself.
My dad starts cracking up as if that's the funniest thing in the world.
"Dad what's so funny?"
"Nothing, sorry. Continue Callie. Tell us about med school."
"Well before I went to med school. I joined the Peace Corps, spent some time in Botswana."
"No shit, the Peace Corps? My dad genuinely asked. This causes me to smile cause my dad has never been interested in any of my prior girlfriends.
"Shit yeah, well you see I come from money. My dad he owns a hotel chain. And my mother has one of the biggest law firms in Florida. So I grew up pretty much getting whatever I wanted. Don't get me wrong I am grateful and my parents are one of the hardest working people I know. But I didn't care for that life. It was wholesome. I felt like I needed to do more. So I signed up and packed my bags. When I told them. They were so mad at me, but they let me be. While being there I was inspired to go to Med school and become an Orthopedic surgeon."
"That's amazing Callie." My mom smiled.
"Thank you Barbara."
My dad looks at me and smiles at Callie, "That's very honorable. I can't see why Arizona likes you so much."
"Thank you that means a lot. Thank you Colonel."
"Callie, you can call me Daniel."
"No ways! Colonel is way more bad ass!" She laughed while elbowing my dad.
"Arizona I like her. You better keep this one."
"I know, I can see that. I'm sorry to cut this short, but we need to get back to work."
"Of course, we're so sorry. We don't want you two to get in trouble."
"Well, I have a quiet day. Chang's here and how about I show you two around the city?"
"Really?" My mom smiled.
"Of course, I hope you two aren't vegan cause I know this terrific Mexican restaurant."
My dad stands up and puts his arm around Callie and my mom. "We're not vegan and we love Mexican food."
"Well let's go." They start walking off totally forgetting about me and I love it.
"Wow, aren't you forgetting something?"
Callie comes running back to me and gives me a kiss on my cheek. "Sorry baby, I'll get you you're favorite. I love you."
"I love you too. Have fun."
"We will, now they can tell me all your embarrassing stories and you won't be there to stop them." She teased.
"Calliopeee!"
"Bye honey. Have fun at work."
End of flashback
"Arizona what are you going to do? Do you even know where she is?"
"She hasn't been answering my calls, but her sister called me and told me she will be staying with her, and not to fly out."
"What did Callie say before she left?"
"That she will call me when she's ready to talk."
"Well what are you gonna do till then?"
"I don't know. I've been trying to figure that out. Everyone keeps telling me that, but it's not that simple."
"Why did you cheat on her?"
"Mom-"
"No seriously just tell me."
"She was a doctor from another hospital, she came to work on a case with Mark and I. She kept flirting with me. I told her I was married and that I had one leg. She didn't care, she just kept pursuing me. Then I lost control. She wanted me-"
"Did Callie not want you?"
"Of course she did mom, it has nothing to do with Callie. It was about me."
"Arizona I will never understand what happened to you. I know what you went through caused you a lot of pain and trauma."
I stand up to leave cause I can't stand the thought of talking about the plane crash.
"Sit the FUCK DOWN NOW!"
Never hearing her swear at me in my entire life. I sit down.
"You don't understand mom."
"You're right. I don't understand. I will never understand unless I've survived a plane crash and lost a leg. Just like how you will never understand how it feels like to be cheated on by the love of your life."
Realizing what my mom said is true. I break down. "Mom, I fucked up and she's gone." I sobbed.
My mom rushes to my side and holds me. "Arizona, sweetie. Calm down"
"She left. She left her ring and her necklace. She would never do that unless we were over."
"Do you believe it's over?"
"Yes.. I don't know... no. Callie and I were not done." I say crying harder than ever. "Mom I can't lose her. I won't survive without her. And now my migraine is back."
"Sweetie go lay down. I'll clean up. We can talk more later."
I grab my crutches and make my way to my room. I lean on the doorframe. "Mom, I know you hate me. I'm sorry. I know you raised me better than this."
"Zona, I don't hate you. I could never hate you. You did a horrific thing, but that doesn't make you a horrible person. Go ahead and rest.
I look up at the ceiling and I decide to do something I never did in my entire life, but I watched Callie do multiple time. I prayed.
"Who ever is listening, please send me a sign. I don't know what to do. And I need some guidance. Tim if you're listening. I fucked up and I'm lost. Amen. I guess?"
I sit up and grab the bag I brought home from Callie's office. I start to go through Callie's calendar and just the little things stick out. She has hearts around our anniversary, my birthday. My moms and my dads birthday. Her parents. I go to close her calendar and a business card comes flying out. I pick it up and read it. It's Dr. Wyatts info card. "Thanks Tim."
Callie POV
"Hi dad."
"Calliope are you okay? What's going on? Where's Arizona?"
I look up to Aria and I don't know what to say.
"Well, I'm gonna pick up Cal, and we're probably gonna have dinner. I'll grab you something Callie."
"Okay, thanks Aria."
Aria walks out of the room and I hear the door shut.
"What's going on? You haven't talked to your sister in almost 8 years and you're here. Are you staying here? Where's Arizona?"
"Dad, I don't know how to say this, but we split up. She cheated on me and things have been bad. And I don't wanna talk about it."
I could feel my body wanting to throw up again.
"When did this happened?" He says looking at me.
"A few days ago."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"I didn't want to get into it. I was so scared to tell you that I failed again, and Mom hates me. Honestly I'm not even sure what I'm going to do."
Flashback
"So you don't want me to meet him?"
"Not yet sweetie, we just started dating and he's only in town for today."
"Okay, I understand." Arizona says giving me a kiss on the cheek.
A few hours later my dad pulls up to the hospital.
"Daddy!"
"Híja. You're looking amazing. Divorce looks good on you. He joked.
"Thanks dad. You know I should have never married him."
"I'll say."
"I'll just call it temporary insanity."
"Anyways what's new?"
I wasn't gonna tell him, but something inside told me if I did everything would be fine.
"Pápa you love me right?"
"Of course that's a stupid question."
"Well they're is no easy way to say this but I'm into girls...I mean women."
He looks at me with his eyes wide open. "What?"
"Yeah, I never thought I would end up with a woman, well not until recently. Dad please be okay with this."
"Calliope Umm.. I don't know what to say."
I start crying. "Oh god you do hate me."
"No, I don't. Stop thinking I don't love you." He grabbed my chin to waste him. "Look at me."
"I can't say I agree with this, but this is your life Callie, not mines, not your moms. It's yours. So if this is how you want to live your life then I'm okay with it."
"Really?"
"Yes, now do you have a partner? A girlfriend? Or whatever you call yourself?"
"Yes, I have a girlfriend. You want to meet her?"
"Of course, let's go."
We walk to the Peds wing and Arizona is in the NICU checking on the new born babies.
"That's her daddy, she's the one in the back. She's actually the head of Pediatrics."
My dad nods his head approving everything. I knock on the window and Arizona looks at me. I signal for her to come. She nods her head.
She walks out, and I can tell she's nervous. "Dad, I want you to meet my girlfriend. Arizona Robbins. Arizona this is my dad. Carlos Torres."
"It's nice to meet you Mr. Torres." She puts her hand out.
"You too Dr.Robbins." He says shaking her hand.
"Firm, strong. Nice handshake."
"My father was a colonel in the army. So he taught me how to shake hands. And please call me Arizona."
"So Arizona I can tell you're busy. Are you free for dinner tonight?"
"Yes, of course. I'll be there."
Later that night we make our way into the restaurant.
"So Arizona, tell me about yourself."
"Well, I come from a military background, we moved around a lot up until high school. Then we finally settled down in Boston. I love to do anything to get your heart pumping. I love motor cross, kayaking, windsurfing. You name it. I'm sure I've done it."
"So you like things that give you a rush?"
"I guess it would sound like that. But I love things that make me feel alive. For me being around sick kids can get hard. Watching them reach the end has always been hard and will forever be hard. But it's part of the job. So when I get a chance I like to do things that make me feel alive"
"Hmm I understand, I guess that's an outlet for you."
"Yeah, it definitely is."
"So you have any siblings?"
"Dad." I say knowing it's a tough topic for Arizona.
"Calliope, it's okay. I had a brother, but he died a few years ago in the line of duty."
"Arizona, I'm so sorry. But I'm grateful for your families service."
"I appreciate that sir."
"So tell me what do you do? Callie never really gave away too much information about you."
"Really? Calliope you never mentioned anything."
"Dad."
"What am I missing something?"
"No, Arizona it's nothing."
"What you're not part of the mafia are you?" She joked.
My dads face goes serious, and I can tell Arizona is freaking out.
"So you did tell her míja."
"No, I didn't she just guessed."
"Is that a problem Dr. Robbins?"
"Umm..Umm.."
I can't keep a straight face watching her freak out. All of a sudden I burst into laughter, and my father joins in.
"Callie, that's messed up. I was freaking out."
"I know, I'm sorry. I just couldn't stop myself."
"Anyways, have you ever heard of the Archfield?" My father asked.
"Yes I have, aren't they like a high end hotel."
"Yes, it's. We own it. When I moved here from Mexico I bought an old motel and fixed it and sold it. Then I kept doing it and I got real good at it. Now we have over 400 locations."
"Wow that's amazing Sir. Callie why didn't you tell me?"
"Because people usually freak out."
"Why, you shouldn't be afraid to share your family success? It's amazing and inspiring."
I look into her eyes and I know I'm in love with her. "Well, I guess I just needed to find the right person to share this information with."
"Well, I'm stuffed. Thank you for coming to dinner with me. I truly enjoyed it and enjoyed the company even more."
"I'm gonna use the bathroom. I'll be right back."
"Arizona."
"Yes sir."
"You see that girl, she's my baby. Don't you dare hurt her. She's been hurt enough. She's very passionate and when she loves she loves hard. And I can tell she loves you. Different from that O'Malley kid."
"Sir, I will never intentionally hurt Callie. She means a lot to me."
"Good, cause if you hurt her, I know people."
"Most people think I was named for the state, but it's not true. I was named for a battle ship. The U.S.S. Arizona. My grandfather was serving on the Arizona when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, and he saved 19 men before he drowned. Pretty much everything my father did his whole life was about honoring that sacrifice. I was raised to be a good man in a storm. Raised me to love my country. To love my family. To protect the things I love. I'm a good man in a storm. I love your daughter. And I protect the things that I love. Not that I need to. She doesn't need it. She's strong, and caring, and honorable. She's who you raised her to be."
"Hey I'm back." I smiled.
Arizona sticks her hand out to shake, "It was really nice meeting you sir." But my father pulls her into a hug, and I'm shocked.
"Callie, I'll meet you in the car."
"Okay."
As Arizona walks away. I turn to my dad.
"What was that about?"
"I like her, she's the one."
"She's the one? You literally spent 5 minutes with her alone."
"Sometimes a father just knows. I see the way you two look at each other."
"And what do you see?"
"I see how much you adore her and love her. I never saw you look at O'Malley like that."
"Hmmm, maybe you're right. But I'm not sure she's the one."
"Yes you do. Don't lie Calliope."
"Dad, fine you're right. But still it's too soon."
"If you say so, but I need to get going my jet leaves in an hour."
"Okay, I love you dad." I say hugging him tightly.
"Love you too míja."
End of flashback
"Calliope."
"Dad I know it's pathetic. I'm pathetic. Apparently I marry people who cheat on me."
"Mija look at me."
I look up into my father's eyes.
"Nothing about you is pathetic. You're an amazing hard working woman. The best orthopedic surgeon. You work hard and you love harder. There's nothing pathetic about that."
"Thanks dad."
"So what are you gonna do?"
"Dad, I don't want to talk about it right now. I spent most of my day sleeping and talking to Aria. I'm drained. Emotionally and physically."
"Okay, Mija. I'll let it go for now, but we will talk about it."
"I know thanks dad."
"And you're wrong."
"Wrong about what?"
"Your mom, she doesn't hate you."
"Dad she hasn't talked to me since I came out. Of course she hates me."
"Do you believe that, deep inside do you believe she hates you?"
"Yes."
"You know when you called me up to help you with the lawsuit. Do you know who I called first?"
"Your crazy lawyer?"
"No, I called your mom."
"What? You told mom."
"Of course, she's my wife, and the best damn lawyer I know."
"So it was because of her, they got rewarded that much."
"Yes, Mija that was your mom who talked to their lawyer. Your mother did that. For you. For Arizona."
"Dad we haven't spoken in 10 years. Why didn't she call me?"
"I don't know Mija. I'm guessing she's scared."
"Dad, I have cried over her for years. I'm 34 years old, does she not think I needed her? I needed her so many times in my life."
"Well maybe it's time you did."
"I can't. I'm going through so much right now and I can't deal with her."
"I understand Mija. So how long are you staying here?"
"I don't know. I packed up and left. I just need to breathe. I felt like I was drowning."
"So what made you call Aria?"
"I don't know. I missed her so much. At the time I didn't know what to do. So I just called her. And I'm glad I did. We cleared the air and now we're good."
"I know, I'm so happy for you Mija. Aria missed you. Every time I would visit you. She would ask about you."
"Why didn't you tell me about Calvin?"
"Because it wasn't my place to say anything. Still isn't my place. Plus you two weren't talking. I didn't think you cared."
"Dad, I'm so sorry. I put you in this position."
"Mija, don't worry about it. That's why I'm the dad. To take care of the hard situations. I'm just glad you two are talking again."
"Me too."
"Well I came to see Calvin, I should head home. Your mothers waiting for me. I love you Mija and if you need anything and I mean anything. You call me."
"I know daddy."
"That O'Malley kid, I know I threw him to the wall. I wanted to so badly punch him. But Arizona I would never hit a lady, but I know people. Say the word and it's done." He winked.
"Daddy, no. God no." I laughed.
"I know sweetie. I just wanted to make you laugh. I'll swing by tomorrow after work. Tell your sister I said bye."
"I will goodnight daddy. I love you."
"Love you too Mija."
I lay in bed and for the first time since finding out about Arizona. I feel okay. I start to think about the things my father shared with me about my mom. And I can't help but wonder if I could get my family back. A few minutes later, I fall asleep.
The next thing I know I feel little hands on my face.
"Cal, I told you to stay out of your tía's room."
"Sorry tía."
"Go back to sleep Callie."
"No it's fine." I say tickling his belly. "What time is it?"
"It's 8am I'm gonna drop him off and stop at a few stores. Do you need anything?"
"No, I think I'm good. You know he doesn't need to go."
"I know I'm thinking maybe after today he can stay and hang with us. I know he's dying to spend time with you. But I also have a few things I want to share with you." She says pointing her eyes at Cal.
I nod my head silently understanding that it's about Calvin. "Oh, okay."
"We'll text me if you need anything. I should be gone 3 hours the max."
"Okay, take your time. I'll be fine."
I lay in bed for a few more minutes then I get up and wash off. Before I head to the living room, I grab my phone. I debate on turning it on.
"No, not yet." I whispered to myself.
Just then the door bell rings. I'll just let it go. I have no clue who that could be. I look through the peephole and it's my mom.
I opened the door, "Mamá?"
With tears rolling down her face, "Hija."
"What are you doing here?"
"Your pápa told me you were here."
"So you thought you could show up and everything would be okay?"
"Of course not, but I'm here Calliope. I'm trying."
"Mom, I can't right now."
"I understand." She turns and starts to walk back to her car.
"I'll you when I'm ready."
"That would be perfect." She gives me a small grin.
For the first time, I actually have an appetite. I go in the kitchen and make myself a bowl of cereal. While sitting on the counter, I look at Aria refrigerator and it's full of drawing and pictures of them. All of a sudden I feel the urge to throw up. Running to the bathroom. I hurl everything. "Why does this keep happening." I brush my teeth, then I head back in the kitchen to clean up my dishes. I make me a cup of tea and stand in front of the refrigerator admiring my nephew and sister. I look at the homemade calendar my nephew made. I look at the date and I realize something. I'm late.
"Shit."
