Interval 01 – Inception – Point of Origin

It was like I was having a strange vision, I couldn't move, speak or do anything but see. I was in a white void and there, right above me, right in my face, was the blood spattered face of Paxton Fettel.

"What's the first thing you remember?" He asked ominously.

With that all faded to black and I heard a woman screaming, a vision of bright overhead hospital lights which faded again as the woman called out again.

"Where are you taking him!?"

Then I had a vision of a man over me, elderly with grey hair and moustache, dark eyes behind glasses.

"You will be a god among men."

The vision faded after that and I blinked, clearing my mind. I was sitting in a car with Betters driving it, he was explaining the situation.

"We've traced Fettel to an abandoned building just up ahead." He said. "No sign of enemy activity on the satellite, but don't take any chances."
He stopped the car and turned his attention to a laptop he had set up to monitor us.

"Jankowski, you in position?" He asked.

Jankowski came over the radio. "Just say the word."

Betters nodded. "Alright, move it out."

I nodded and exited the car, pulling out my AT-14 pistol, keeping my RPL Sub-Machinegun strapped to my back.

Ready to begin my mission I advanced down the run down alley towards the building. I rounded a corner and spotted a fence blocking the way, but part of the blockage was simply a collection of rotted wooden boards. I used the butt of my pistol to knock them out and ducked in through the opening and into a small graffiti covered courtyard and soon spotted the door to the building. I hurried up and opened the door, stepping inside. Passing through the trash-filled hallway, I ignored the rats scuttling around and entered a darkened storage room. I reached up and flicked on my head lamp and moved through, avoiding the shelves that were set in the room and finally I reached the door. I touched the handle only for it to fall off its hinges flat onto the floor. I blinked in surprise but turned the lamp off and stepped into the small decrepit lobby area with a reception desk.

'Nothing yet, strange, something feels...wrong.' I mused.

Trying to stay focused I continued to move through the building. Entering a small tiled lobby area, I heard the smash of glass and turned to see a boarded up set of double doors. But the glass window in one of them was broken and through it was Jankowski.

"Hey bro, what took you so long?" He quipped, before trying the door, shaking his head. "Try to find a way around."

I nodded and began searching through the corridors and storage rooms.

As I climbed a short flight of stairs and opened the glass-windowed double doors I entered a tiled hallway when suddenly I heard a noise, which also made static buzz in my radio briefly. Then it was gone.

'What the hell?'

I turned and found a hallway that led around to the hopefully where Jankowski was. My path was blocked by a hospital stretcher of all things across the hallway. I simply leapt over it and turned the corner when suddenly there was a rumbling noise. I paused, then stepped back as tiles flew off the walls and a strange black distortion hung in the air. I approached it warily when suddenly the vision of a man's mutilated face appeared then vanished. Exiting the hallway I reached a room which I began to cross towards the far side where there was a partially boarded up doorway. An eerie sound began filling my ears as I saw the figure of a man passing by on the other side. I quickly rushed over and ducked underneath. I took aim but saw it wasn't Fettel, not only that, but they dissolved into ash right in front of me.

"Why did you bring me here?" Fettel's voice suddenly sounded in my ears. "Why did you bring me back?"

I hurried onwards towards an open doorway leading to another storage room when it abruptly slammed shut and the sound of a baby crying filled my ears again.

I quickly reopened the door and entered the storage room and looked around quickly, leaping back as several items suddenly moved around on their own volition. I shook my head and hurried onwards, reaching a door that was locked with a large padlock. Shaking my head I took aim and fired at the lock, destroying it and entering, climbing up the stairwell. When I reached the corridor at the top the overhead light partially broke loose with a loud bang and swung wildly. I hissed and avoided it and moved onwards until I reached a set of barricaded double doors.

"Hold on a sec."

It was Jankowski, who quickly showed up at the other side and pushed the bookcase barricade aside and unlocked the door.

"Come on."

I nodded and followed him, our weapons drawn as we reached another door.

"You ready?" He asked, I nodded. "Go!"

He kicked the door open and suddenly there was a white flash and I couldn't see him any longer and everything around me moved as if in slow motion. I hurried onwards as I heard whispering all around me and then Fettel's voice again.

"You were born here...in this place." He paused and then added. "I was there."

I tried to comprehend that. 'What in the hell...how is this, what…?'

I focused and soon everything was back to normal, as Jankowski and I stood before the mutilated half-eaten body of an Armacham employee, seated in a chair.

"Jin, we need you up here." Jankowski called on the radio.

She replied at once. "On my way."

Jankowski continued to report. "Looks like we're too late boss...just leftovers."

"The transmitter's signal's coming from nearby." Betters explained. "Fettel's gotta be around there somewhere."

Jankowski nodded and turned to me. "I'll wait here for Jin, you take a look around."

I nodded and made my way out of the other door.

I climbed up a flight of stairs at the end of the corridor, hearing that eerie sound again and saw a brief glimpse of Fettel through the slightly open door at the top. I rushed forwards and burst through the door, gun at the ready, but he was gone. I was standing on the roof now. I made my way across, over a small open area and into a rooftop building and passed through a series of rooms before finding myself on another open rooftop. I heard a noise and followed it, moving between two large shafts when suddenly, from behind the one to my right, Fettel jumped out, swimming a two by four beam. I tried to use my reflexes but to my shock, Fettel didn't slow down like everything else and I took the hit. Falling back as I blacked out.

Coming too I could hear more whispering sounds and found I was on my back, dazed and there, squatting down over me, was Fettel. Standing behind him were two men clad in all black military gear with masks and helmets, two of the Replicas.

"The dead man's name was Charles Habegger." Fettel suddenly spoke, his voice raspy and precise. "I remember him...but are the memories mine, or hers?"

I couldn't help but be confused by that, and then unsettled by his next statement.

"It makes no difference, he deserved to die." Fettel glared, hatred now appearing on his features. "They all deserve to die."

With that he stood and walked away as I blacked out again.

Recovering I got to my feet as I heard Betters over the radio.

"come in, over!" He cried. "What's going on, I've lost Fettel's signal?"

I picked up my handgun but before I could report what happened, as well as the fact he'd clearly escaped, more radio chatter ensued.

"Tomcat." A voice said, referring to Betters' call signal. "This is Den Mother. I hope you aren't busy. We've got a situation down at the harbour."

"What kind of situation?" Betters asked.

Den Mother replied. "We located those soldiers you were looking for. But we're under

orders not to engage until you guys reconnoitre."

"Understood."

"I've got two birds en route to your position. You should have a

visual shortly. "Den Mother explained.

"We'll be ready." Betters replied.

I took my cue and back tracked through the buildings and all the way back to Jankowski and Jin, along the way I saw the two helicopters flying towards the building. I soon re-entered the room Jin and Jankowski had been in with the dead guy, interrupting their conversation it seemed.

"Hey, back already? See anything?" Jankowski queried.

I grimaced behind my mask but before I could reply Betters spoke up again.

"You guys about done up there? Our day's just getting started."

Jin peered closely at Habegger's corpse, preparing for her work.

"You boys run along." She said. "I'll be busy here for a while."

We nodded and left, as we did so my body seemed to go on automatic pilot as I was assaulted by another vision.

Those unintelligible whispers in the background again. I could see things, blurry overhead hospital lights coming into focus.

"Breathe!" A voice cried.

My vision changed, now there was a bald man in a lab coat, his back turned, in a white tiled room, shoulders hunched and body shuddering.

"C'mon, make her push!" Another voice cried as there was a burst of white noise.

Then I saw the lights again, the sounds of a baby crying, then an unknown man's voice.

"I've tried to forget. I've tried so hard to forget."

The bald man began to turn as the baby cried again, then the vision faded.

When my vision was normal again I found myself seated in a helicopter, Jankowski stood just outside another while several black clad SFOD-D operatives were nearby. One had his head visible, he was dark haired, with dark eyes and brown skin, radio chatter identified him as Douglas Holiday, the team leader.

"These men are from F.E.A.R. They're special attachments to our unit for the duration of this op. They will be on point. Their mission is to assess the nature of the threat. Our job is to keep them alive. Do not engage the enemy." He said, pointing sharply for emphasis. "Remember that we are not dealing with ordinary bad guys. Team One will move in from the south west. Team Two will approach from the north. Once our recon is complete, we will rendezvous and wait for further

orders."

They all nodded and he gave the order.

"Okay, let's saddle up!"

With that they all began boarding as we got ready for the next destination, this was clearly turning into a much bigger operation than initially thought.
