Episode 1: Cat and Mouse Around the House
The morning began rather quietly at the Starling residence as Robyn rose from her comfy bed at six in the morning and immediately got herself ready for another day of school. Today would be a happy day, she knew, as it had been only a week since her newfound pets, Tom Cat and Jerry Mouse, came into her care and helped her reunite with her beloved father and save her family's fortune from that good-for-nothing "Aunt" Figg.
When Robyn had dressed, washed her face, combed her hair, and made her bed, she hurried down to the kitchen for breakfast. Her father was there now as were Tom and Jerry, and the cat and mouse duo seemed to be getting along just swimmingly.
"Morning, Daddy," Robyn said to her father as sweetly as ever.
Mr. Starling got up from his toast and tea to hug his little girl, saying, "Good morning, sweetie. Sleep well?"
"Beautifully," Robyn replied happily as she joined her father for a breakfast of buttered toast. Then she scratched Tom behind the ears and petted Jerry's little brown head.
"Good morning, Tom. Hello, Jerry," Robyn said with equal sweetness.
"Morning, Robyn," Tom and Jerry responded together.
"Are you ready for school?" said Jerry in his chipper manner.
"Uh-huh," said Robyn. "I'll have to hurry to catch the bus, though. I'll see you two tonight. I hope you two can keep out of trouble."
Tom and Jerry nodded and saluted, and then got a hug from their little owner. Then Robyn hugged her father, slung her backpack over her shoulders, and then headed out the door to the bus stop with a cheerful goodbye. Then Mr. Starling headed to his office at Starling Enterprises headquarters, taking care to pet Tom and Jerry as well.
Once Robyn and her father were away, Tom turned to Jerry and said, "So, what do you suppose we should do now that Robyn and her dad are away at school and work, Jerr?"
The little brown mouse scratched his head and said, "Hey, I know! How about we just take some time to enjoy the comfort of our new home?"
"I like that idea," Tom replied. "Let's do it."
And with that, the cat and mouse took a little tour of the Starling house. Robyn's room, they knew quite well, but there was so much more to enjoy about their new home. For one thing, the master bedroom was twice as big as Robyn's room, with the bed made with remarkably attractive oak wood, and the mattress and blankets were almost silken in texture.
The living room was set with red wall paint that had an unusually calming effect under the light of the three crystal chandeliers that led from the front door of the house to the kitchen. The coffee table was surrounded by fine chairs and the dining room table was large enough for ten people to sit at. The family room was on the next floor, featuring a shelf stacked with movies and a television at least three feet long and two feet high.
Tom and Jerry checked out the backyard, which was quite big even for a wealthy family's house in the big city, and they even had the courage to pay a visit to the basement, which they found was in remarkably good condition and apparently used as a storage area for emergency supplies and the Starling family's private reserve of holiday decorations. When their tour of the house was done, Tom said to his mouse buddy, "You don't think Robyn would mind us raiding the fridge a bit, do ya, Jerry?"
"Not to worry, Tom. Robyn knows we can keep order around here," replied Jerry with his chipper smile.
…
Tom and Jerry spent the next couple hours enjoying each other's company without needing to cause mischief. Jerry filled Tom's milk bowl before fetching a little platter of cheese squares for himself, and they popped in one of the films from Robyn's movie collection to watch, namely Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. However, while the cat and mouse duo were enjoying themselves, Jerry saw a shadow move across the squares of sunlight let in by the family room window. The little mouse looked around, but saw nothing.
Must've been my eyes playing tricks on me, he thought. But no sooner had he resumed watching the movie, Tom saw a similar shadow and he was surprised.
"Hey, Jerry. Did… did you see what I saw?" the gray tuxedo cat asked his friend.
"I think so. What did you see?"
Before Tom could answer the question, he and Jerry saw the same shadow appear again, and this time, they could determine what it was they saw. Two men, one short and stout and one tall and lean, were coming up to the threshold, and the lean man was carrying a crowbar. That's when Tom and Jerry knew what was going on.
"Burglars? In this neighborhood?" wondered Jerry.
"Well, Robyn is one of the wealthiest kids on the block," said Tom in response.
"Well, I'm not gonna let any crooks steal from our owners!" Jerry snorted. "This means war!"
"In that case, we'll keep Robyn's things off their hands together," said Tom with a nod.
With that, Tom and Jerry set up a bunch of traps around the house much like the ones Tom had used to try and catch Jerry before they lost their home and met Robin. Once every trap was set, the cat and mouse went to the door and heard the two thieves conversing outside.
"Will ya gimme a hand with this door?" came the voice of the first one.
And with that, the two thieves began attempting to pry open the front door, with the first using a crowbar and the second using a shovel, of all things. But they had reckoned without Tom and Jerry.
When the crowbar-wielding burglar managed to break the lock, Tom let his natural instincts guide him and he sprang at the two men with a yowling shriek. He made the two burglars nearly jump out of their skin, and the one wielding the shovel tried to clobber Tom on the head, only for Jerry to throw mouse traps at him.
The shovel-wielding burglar looked so silly with mouse traps on his ears, hands, and nose that Jerry couldn't help laughing. This made the burglar so mad he chased Jerry into the kitchen, only to slip on some billiard balls from the basement that Tom had laid in his path.
The gray cat laughed to see it, but then he too had to run when the other burglar chased after him, shrieking that he was going to tear the fur off Tom's back. Even so, Tom pretended to trip and caused that burglar to tumble over the coffee table, effectively dousing himself in coffee that had recently been brewed.
Meanwhile, Jerry lured the bruised burglar with the shovel up the stairs, but when Jerry got to the top, he poured a bucket full of ice cubes onto the stairs which sent the thief bumbling back to the ground. Tom stuck a match in the other burglar's shoe and lit it, having the effect of that thief sticking his hot foot in the sink to cool it.
This went on and on until the two would-be burglars finally ran out of the Starling house bruised and ragged, and they sprinted away yelling about a mad cat and mouse who had nearly beaten them within an inch of their lives. Back at the house, Tom and Jerry watched the thieves go, and after making sure that there were no items missing from the house, they cleaned up the place in preparation for Robyn and Mr. Starling to come home.
Robyn came home from school at precisely 3:15, and Tom and Jerry helped her with her homework. When it was all complete and checked, Robyn played happily with her two pets until her father came home, and then Robyn spent the whole evening watching The Wizard of Oz with him and finally having some catching-up time with her father. While Robyn cuddled Tom and held Jerry in her left hand, Jerry said to his feline buddy, "It's really nice having a cat and mouse around the house, eh?"'
