He told her he was sorry. Sorry that he gave orders to shoot her, to carry her across two fields, a bog and a style in a duffel bag, to sedate her then put her into a cold hard concrete cell. Sorry that he had held her captive even when she had healed his best friend. Sorry that he had caused so much trouble.

He had said sorry.

But if he hadn't done it he would never have met her: This beautiful yet deadly girl who had not only earned his respect but had kept it. The feisty sparkle in her hazel eyes, her sarcastic remarks, her defiance, her love and loyalty to her people. The people. Kidnapping her had brought new meaning to his life. A chance to blow on the spark of decency he had ignored for so long and make a flame that slowly over time could grow and mature into a fire. He gently stroked the gold medallion with his thumb, caressing the smooth surface. He slowly threaded a leather thong through the small hole in the centre of the coin. He attached it round his neck and tucked it away under his shirt, the cool metal resting against his chest. He would nurture that decency. He would show her that under all this conceited deviousness there was a lonely boy who wanted to be accepted as well as feared and obeyed. By kidnapping her he had been shown that a different way of life was possible for him.

For that he could never be sorry.
