Disclaimer: I don't own Digimon, the concept, or its characters. They belong to Bandai, Toei Animation, Saban... maybe others as well. I'm merely using them for my own personal enjoyment. Please don't sue

Notes: First thing I've written in a while again. My inspiration just dropped off the face of the earth the last month or so. Now I have to break it back in.

Takes place a little after season two.

The Way

It wasn't that he didn't appreciate the gift - he did, really. (One-sided Kenato)

It wasn't that he didn't appreciate the gift - he did, really. It was how it was handled that bothered him.

It was the way that it was delivered to him, hours late, without so much as a phone call or an attached note to say he was sorry.

The way that it looked so plain, almost as if it had been picked out at the last minute.

The way that it left a dull ache in his heart whenever he thought about it.

Ken knew it was partially his fault. He had never given any of them a clear idea of what he would want as a gift, and for the past few months, he had basically said that he wouldn't be upset if they hadn't gotten him something.

So why did Yamato's gift hurt so much?
