Quiet, even though the street was full of noises, I heard nothing.
My mind was trying to process everything that had happened the last few hours.
It was just out of this world.
It was like i was living in a dream or something.
The ginger girl and Lance were expecting me to be okay with it.
That thing is supposed to be a gift, but why do i feel it as a curse?
Unexpectedly, a book landed on my feet making me look at the direction it came from.
A boy was surounded by six other boys. They were shoving him around. The poor kid was begging them to stop, they didn't listen.
Why does nobody ever listen?
I wanted to keep walking, but the boy's screaming was too hard to ignore. I stoped and walked up to them.
"Hey! Leave him alone," I shouted coldly.
Now they were all looking at me. A tall boy with black hair and brown eyes, propably the leader of the gang, stoped his movements.
"And who the fuck are you?" he asked, while checking me out in a way that made me sick in my stomach
"Who I am is none of your business, just let go of the kid and leave," I said and he surprisingly let go of him.
The kid run off, not looking back. But who could blame him?
The guy walked closer to me, he was so much taller than me.
"Now what, little girl?" he said and smirked at me
"Now nothing," I said and turned to leave but the guy grabbed my shoulder hard .
"Not so fast, girly," he said and I grabbed his arm and twisted it.
If he wants a fight, I will give him one.
"That's enough," an unknown male voice said and I turned to him.
He was tall, around my age, he had dark brown hair similar to Lance's shade of hair color. He was wearing dark blue jeans and a green baggie t-shirt. He was also wearing red sunglasses, they looked good on him but they were still kind of weird.
"I said that's enough! Leave her alone or else I will call the cops!" He said and I let go of the boy's arm.
I was expecting the boys to react. Maybe hit the guy, but they just run. Cowards.
"Are you alright?" He asked, concern in his voice, which surprised me since he didn't even know me.
"I could have handled it, but thanks anyway," I said and turned my back on him.
"Hey, wait! Do you need a ride?" He shouted after me, I looked at him as he was pointing at a red and white convertible car. I assume it was his.
"Thanks but no thanks. My feet work just fine," I said and walked away not sparing
him a second glance.
What a weird guy. He helped me, though.
-Time Skip-
I sat on my favourite spot in the Deerfield forest, away from everything and everyone, thinking how I ended up here.
Nothing makes any sense, it's like a bad dream and that I will wake up on my bed and everything will be as it always was.
It is just too unreal.
A girl who can read minds and a guy who makes the earth shake?
How can any of this be true?!
I thought, getting frustrated and I took a deep breath. The forest air made me feel slightly better.
It always did.
Sitting here on my beloved tree, admiring the view.
I could see the whole northern part of the forest from up here. I could also see the river that passed through the forest.
The south part is not visible, not that I would like to see it again.
I thought and looked down at the burns in the back of my hands.
- Flashback -
I run and run into the forest. The pain on my legs, hand and back had me crying. But I didn't care I needed to get away.
I needed to get away from the fire.
My eyes went wide when I noticed a river in the middle of the forest. I hesitated but jumped in anyways.
The cold water made contact with my burnt skin and I let out a piercing scream. The pain was unbearable.
The water was shallow and I was able to crawl out at the other side of the river.
Once I was out, I laid down.
I could hear people screaming for help. The air smelled like burnt wood, plastic and flesh. The night sky was covered with dark smoke and and sparkling flames. Even though I was soaking wet in a cold winter night, the only thing I could feel was warmth.
That day I had wished that he would burn in hell.He did.
A small laugh escaped my lips and I closed my eyes, allowing darkness to consume me.
- End of flashback -
I flinched at the memory.
That could have been a good day to die, but no, I survived and look at me now worrying about a redheaded lady who reads minds.
She was kind I will admit that, but she won't be that kind when she gets to know me, nobody ever was.
A snapping sound interrupted my thoughts.
I looked down and saw a man.
He was probably around his 30s, he had light brown hair, he was wearing an old leather jacket and pants.
The only reason I could think of him being here is that he's lost or something .
A breeze blew my dark brown hair which was in a ponytail. The man started sniffing the air and after a few seconds he turned towards me.
He made eye contact with me and began walking in my direction and I climbed down the tree and started walking away.
But he was catching up to me.
I took some sharp turns and hid behind a tree. I was expecting to see the man pass by, but he didn't.
Maybe he lost me.
"Hey," I hear a rough male voice say and I gasped in surprise as I came face to face with the unknown man.
I reached down to my boot and pulled out my knife, which I always carried with me. I placed it in front of me defensively.
"What do you want?" I asked breathlessly.
"To talk to you, kid," he said
Why does everyone want to talk to me today?
"You don't even know me," I told him and took a step back, but I found myself against a tree.
"Listen, kid, just put that thing down and we can have a chat," he said and I scoffed.
How much of a fool does he thing I am?
"Not a chance," I said and he stared at my eyes again as if he was searching for something inside of them.
"Look, I don't want to fight you. I want to help you," he said and I rolled my eyes.
Nobody helps anyone without wanting something in return.
"Why would you?" I asked him.
He took a step closer and my grip on the knife only became stronger.
"I know what happened to you last night," he said and my eyes widened.
What the hell is going on? How can he possibly know? How did the ginger girl find out?
"You know nothing! I am just a fucking kid. Nothing special about me and I sure as hell don't need your or anybody's help!" I yelled and he sighed.
"You are not just a kid. Like it or not, you are something else. You are evolved. And I want to help you, make your life better not worse," He said and his words made me frustrated.
"Congrats then, you have made things worse than they already were!" I shouted at him.
I looked inside his black eyes but couldn't read him.
"Already were? " He asked and I broke eye contact with him.
"I am not here to hurt you, kid, we are not the bad guys here. We want to help you through this change in your life," he said calmly.
I moved away from the tree and started to walk away.
"Do not walk away, I know you are scared and I know it's not easy to trust some people you just met, or even trust people at all, but just because someone hurt you that doesn't mean that everyone will."
He said and and my expression softened. He understood me.
Wait
"Are you a mind reader, too?" I asked him as I panicked.
"No, I am not, I just know how it feels to be alone for so long, to feel like everyone is trying to hurt you, or profit off you. But one day a man approached me. He helped me, treated me like family even though he had just met me. I didn't trust him at first but in the end he gained my trust. It was the best choice I ever made, that's why I want you to do the same."
I was analyzing the information I just received. He seemed to be telling the truth, but how am I supposed to be sure?
He could tell I was thinking about the choice he gave me.
He stepped closer and this time I didn't pull away. I don't know why but I didn't want to get away from him.
"I don't know what the hell to believe, I don't know if I can believe you, I don't even know your name!"
I told him truthfully, something that I haven't done in a while.
"Logan," he said and gave me his hand to shake.
"Kathryn," but I didn't reach for his hand , so he pulled it away.
"I know that everything seems like it will never be the same, and it will never be," he said and I looked at him. That was not what I was expecting to hear.
"I am not gonna tell you that this mutation thing is a gift. It isn't, at least not for everyone. You will never be the same, this thing is changing you, but is still a part of you. A part that you have to learn to use and control for your own survival," he said , and in this whole mess his words made sense to me.
"Are you.. you know?" I whispered, trying to ask discreetly if he had powers too.
He nodded.
After that we just stood there.
"Follow me kid. Let me introduce you to the team," he said.
"Team?" I asked.
There was a team full of people like this?
"Yeah, there are six of us. People like you and me," he said and his words were stuck in my head.
People just like me?
"This is happening so quickly," I said unsurely.
"There is no pressure here kid. You can always say no," he said and extended his arm for me to take.
My hand almost touched his, but then I felt a sudden force throwing me to the ground.
I groaned in pain and felt the familiar sense of flesh being cut.
I slowly opened my eyes and saw five deep cuts across my stomach.
My shirt was ripped, blood all over it and the wound kept bleeding.
I looked up at my attacker. He was a man, covered in dark brown fur. His eyes where dark brown. He had huge claws and sharp teeth. He was like an animal that could stand on his two feet.
He was smirking at me. But Logan grabbed him and threw him against a tree.
Unexpectedly three metallic claws popped out from Logan's hand and he stabbed the other man in the chest.
The other man fell to the ground and Logan walked up to me.
"You alright?" he asked while examining my wound. I was about to answer but the man from before was coming back again.
"Look out!" I yelled and Logan turned and began fighting with the man.
How is this even possible? He was stabbed in the chest. How could he recover so quickly?
"Kid, run! Go, now!" He said and I stood up and held on to my wound in pain.
I can't leave him with that beast.
"I will be fine. I promise" he said reassuring me.
I was about to turn around and run as far as I could but someone grabbed my neck and threw me against a tree.
A cry left my mouth as I was met with two golden eyes looking at me.
"You should have run, little girl " the woman said with a huge grin on her face.
Fuck , I screwed up
