'Now just to wait for my results.'
She wanted to become a Huntress, Blake Belladonna, and help people. After several years of serving under a master who had become darker and darker, she realized that the group that she had been a part of was no longer the group she originally fought for. She wanted to help the faunus become genuine equals to humans, and she wanted to get the humans to see her kind as equal to their own kind.
The best way to do that was to become a hero to humans.
'... No, the best way is to get them to see me as a hero... somebody that they won't hate. I need to become a role model for Faunus, and a faunus that humans see as a prime example of my people.' Blake was trying to read a book while she waited for her scroll to go off, and tell her if she passed her exams to get into Beacon. Her eyes scanned the book without really reading anything on the pages.
She couldn't concentrate on the book, because her mind kept going to questions on how she was going to succeed.
She used a bow to hide her faunus heritage.
How could she bridge the gap between human and faunus if she only allowed humans to see her as one of them. She didn't exactly have the warmest personality in the world with strangers, and she wasn't great at making friends either. Her personality was a problem to her goal, but people would accept her more as an introvert human than an introvert faunus. If they saw her as a faunus and never gave her a chance to begin with, that would be a problem to her goal.
"I wish I could get some answers from somebody outgoing and friendly."
*Crash*
Blake jumped to her feet when a black and yellow blur slammed through the wall and smashed into the wall next to her. She saw a familiar face, and her cheek stung as she remembered her last meeting with this guy. She watched as Naruto rubbed his jaw in pain, before a weapon came sailing through the wall and landed in his outstretched hand.
'I should have wished for money.' Blake sighed to herself, wondering how Naruto had appeared just as she made her wish. She wasn't bad off in money, but with more she could be living a bit better than in a run down barn. She could have rented an apartment or at least a hotel room until she got her results back. "Naruto... why did you come crashing through the wall?" Blake asked him as she helped him stand up.
"Got launched out of a boat cannon to kill a grimm."
"What?" Blake asked with her eyebrow raised up.
"I got launched out of a boat cannon to kill a grimm. Some guys hired me to guard a boat, and this big sea dragon looking thing showed up... so I told them to launch me at it from the cannon." Naruto mimed what happened with his hands. Blake just looked at him with nothing to show that she was either surprised or disappointed. "Killed it by the way... they missed, but I still managed to cut it's head off as I passed it."
Blake stared at him.
"... am I suppose to believe that?" Blake couldn't help not believe the weird luck that he had.
That situation seemed impossible to believe.
He expected her to buy that he got launched out of a cannon, at a grimm, and sailed for several miles away from the ocean. Only for him to crash through the barn where she was staying, and he didn't hit the barn with enough force to destroyed it with his body. She looked out of the hole, and saw that several trees had been destroyed somebody in a way that didn't match the angle he hit the barn at.
He must have used some landing strategy to slow his descent.
"Believe THIS... they payed me in advance!" Naruto took out a stack of lien and showed it to her.
'This is less than half what a ship guard would make... why is he happy about this?' Blake frowned as a spark of rage filled her gut.
"Yeah, they wanted to hire some other guys, but I convinced them. I said 'You can pay me half of what you would pay them, but don't hire them'... they didn't want to hire me, but I talked them into it." Naruto explained with a proud smirk.
"That is less than half what a human would have made."
"So?" Naruto asked Blake with a shrug. "... if you judge everything based on what other people have, you're not going to be happy. I might be paid less, but at least they hired me... and if they liked the job I did, they might hire me again for more. Hard work pays off way more than bitching and moaning." Naruto would have never even gotten the job if he didn't negotiate with the desire to prove himself.
Blake paused.
That statement tickled something inside of her, but she couldn't put any words on it. Naruto turned his weapon into a shield and placed it on his back. She looked at him, and saw him grinning as he counted the money in his hands.
'He has a point... no faunus would have been willing to do that job for this amount. If he did a good job with a good attitude like his... I can bet that those sailors would be happy to hire him again... they might even hire more faunus like him.' Blake bit her lower lip in thought and paced towards Naruto. She felt something in his actions resonate with her, but she was trying to think over what it was. "Naruto... did they treat you well?" Blake asked.
Naruto grinned.
"Oh, they treated me like shit for most of the trip, they become real friendly near the end though." Naruto laughed his own mistreatment off.
"They treated you like... crap?"
"Ah, it was just name calling and dirty looks... and they made me eat my meals away from everyone else. Nothing I can't handle. I'm not some kid who gets upset by that junk." Naruto walked towards the window, and he looked off into the distance. "... well, nice seeing you again Blake."
"... Nice seeing you again." Blake responded as Naruto jumped out of the barn.
-Next Day-
Blake looked at the crowd of people, and she saw several people giving her dirty looks. She felt anger forming in the pit of her stomach when she saw those dirty looks, and all she was doing was walking down the streets of Vale. She had her bow in her hand instead of on her cat ears, revealing herself to be a faunus to the citizens of the kingdom.
A good number of people seemd to not care about what she was, but that wasn't to say there wasn't also a decent number of people who glared at her.
She gripped her fist tightly when a human flipped her off.
'Good attitude... good attitude.' Blake reminded herself.
Her heart was beating so fast, and she wanted to run away back to the barn, cover up her ears, and read a book. Curiousity got the better of her though, and she wanted to know if this was going to work. She had to know if Naruto's method of hard work and having a good attitude would pay off for her. Blake rubbed her cheeks a little, before she massaged a forced smile onto her face.
"Here kitty kitty... come on... let me pet you."
Blake walked off with a smile on her face, but that feeling of anger grew inside of her gut when she heard the literal cat calling directed towards her. As she passed by the woman who did it, the woman laughed at her face.
Hours.
Blake walked around for hours.
She entered a book shop, a shop that she knew had an owner that discriminated based on species. She made eye contact with the owner, who scoffed at her, but didn't say anything at first. Went towards the new books section, and she just grabbed a book. After hours, the anger inside of her had hit it's peak. She wanted to lash out at somebody, because for hours, she had been subjected to all of the name calling and mocking that she never had to grow up with.
For most of her life... she had lived on Menagerie, and typically she only ever got insults hurled at her when she was at protests. This was the first time she had ever dealt with this treatment outside of specific situations. It was grating.
She took the book to the counter.
"That will be 50 lien."
'... that is 20 lien more.' Blake figured that if the owner didn't kick her out, she would get overcharged. The rage inside of her wanted to explode when she saw the owner smirking when he noticed her pause. "... it must be a really good book to cost that much!" Blake responded with a dumb smile, a good natured smile.
She copied his smile.
The owner seemed surprised by her response as she took out the lien, and gave it to him. He looked at her smile again and then down at the money. It seemed like he did not expect her to actually pay the price. He took her money and she grabbed the book, before she left the shop.
Blake hated it.
She kept the smile on her face though as she left.
'I just overpaid by almost twice what this book was worth... it better be a good book, or I'm going to...' Blake shook her head and stopped herself from thinking that.
"Wait."
The owner grabbed her shoulder as he ran out of the store, and she saw a very awkward look appear. She saw him holding lien in his hand, and he couldn't look her in the eyes. He placed the cards on top of the book, and she noticed he was holding another book in his hands.
"... Here... sorry... I overcharged you. You can have that one... on the house."
Blake's eyes widened for a moment when she could hear that the man was both sorry, and felt awkward at the same time. It would seem that he never expected her to actually pay his price, and that he had wanted her to throw a fit and leave the shop.
"Uh... thank you."
"No... thanks for the business... that is one of my favorites, it's a good read." The owner still couldn't look her in the eye as he quickly turned around and hurried back into his store. Blake watched him with a stunned expression slowly growing.
The anger in her gut was gone.
She looked down at the books that she had gotten, 2 books for the price of one. She started to walk, and the more she walked, the happier the smile that grew with her steps became. She still heard the humans who were whispering nasty things around her.
'... A good attitude... you catch more flies with honey.' Blake felt a few tears coming from her eyes.
She couldn't wait to read her new books.
No matter what was in them, she was sure that she would treasure them.
