- Lord Naruto Uzumaki, Director of Chaldea
Volume 1 - First Order
Chapter 6: Archer
Previously from Naruto Uzumaki: Stargazer…
"Hello, Sétanta," greeted Naruto, while Caster cringed hard, as evident from his reaction.
Clearing his throat, Cu Chulainn relaxed near a wall, "Please don't call me that, old man Naruto."
"Ho, you remember me?" Naruto crossed his arms while Caster rolled his eyes towards him.
Mash and Ritsuka were confused, Olga even more so, as this was another servant, and a non-hostile one, despite the fact that this one came from here in Singularity F and not from Chaldea.
Cu waved him off and crossed his arms, his staff leaning on the wall, "Of course I do, old man. Memories of you from all those years ago are imprinted in my Spirit Origin, but I didn't expect to see you here."
The Director grinned darkly, and Sétanta did not like that grin.
"Oh, is that so? Does that mean you remember the fact that you defiled my daughter?!"
"Ah, shit."
Story Start.
-Homurahara Academy Rooftop, Fuyuki-
Director Uzumaki scoured the area with Shadow Clones, unknown to the rest of his group, and soon, memories came rushing in as each Clone dismissed themselves. Information concerning the burning Singularity found itself being stored and sorted by his mind.
"Have I told you how fucked this place is?" the ever-observant-tailed beast made his presence known while the Director continued his observance.
"You don't need to; I can see that myself," he replied before he looked to see his group on the other side of the rooftop, with Cu Chulainn talking to Mash and Fujimaru.
He could not hear what they were conversing about, nor he cared enough to focus his hearing, but it must have been something serious based on the emotions he could sense.
Arturia stood beside him, eyes on the watch, guarding against any danger that may come to their position. Still, she noticed the change in her master's demeanour, something familiar to her.
"Old fox blabbering his gums again?" she asked, which made Naruto snort as the fox roared profanities within his mind.
"I CHANGE MY MIND! SCATHACH IS THE BEST WOMAN! THE KING-BITCH CAN GO FUCK HERSELF!"
Naruto amusedly shook his head, laughter suppressed; all while Arturia chuckled as she saw his reaction. Brief moments like this were something she treasured in days past, and now, she has another chance to experience more with her master, and she would make it count.
Memories of old came fresh, and a broad smile appeared on her face, with a blush on her cheeks.
"Oi, what's that smile on your face?" His eyebrows twitched, if teasing her, and she averted his look almost immediately.
"Nothing!" she said, slightly too fast for her liking.
"Oh, it's definitely something… oh, my dear servant is having some spicy thoughts; care to share any?"
Instead of a verbal reply, she sent an armoured fist straight to his chest, but he pivoted, and Arturia found herself within his embrace, her back on his chest, and she suddenly became quiet. Still, unnoticed by the rest of their merry group.
"Ah, I missed this," he muttered as he inhaled the scent of her hair, then a kiss on her scalp that sent a shiver down her spine.
"I missed you," she whispered in reply, and the two remained like that for a while until a certain Vice-Director deigned to put a stop to the romance.
"I would prefer if you two acquire a room, but unfortunately, you do not have the time nor the place for such a luxury."
"…"
"…"
"… Vice-Director, anything to report?" Naruto stopped himself from giving any snark, being very used to the Vice-Director, so he went and asked a valid question; thus, he expected a valid answer.
"Damage report, yes. Which one do you want first, structural or personnel?" came the Chaplain's reply and the Director sighed, it was bound to happen, and he had to hear it.
Arturia remained in her place within his arms as the Director and the Vice-Director conducted a summary of the report, and she heard all of it.
"…"
"Chaldea will have to run at maximum capacity despite the gutted personnel and resources; if not, you and I will force it," replied the Director while the Vice-Director nodded, his tone changed, and his face hardened, though mirth did not vanish from his eyes.
"Very well, Warden, may it be so… may the Father of Understanding guide us."
Lord Uzumaki burst out laughing, confusing his servant as well as the old fox. The Director and Vice-Director shared a look before their laughter took over Chaldea's command room.
"Oh, Holy Father… what am I ever going to do with you?" he said in between fits of laughter.
Meanwhile, Arturia remained confused at the interaction between the two old men, which was evident on her usually immaculate face.
"It's one of his famous nicknames from his home: Pater intelligentiæ ac sapientiæ, Father of Understanding and Wisdom. He is praying that may God use him to guide all of us, us, includes himself."
Arturia then turned towards the Vice-Director, who had already returned to his work, still with a smile on his face, opposite to her; so blank was her face that the Director thought she turned to stone, and for a few moments, there was silence, then an unmistakable chuckle came from her.
"Holy Father, thou art truly something else," she said afterwards as she shook her head.
"… I could not be myself if I am someone other than myself, Your Majesty."
His voice turned solemn, reminiscent of something far off, something ancient and divine, and if Arturia rightly remembered, she met him in her lifetime, and more than a thousand years had passed since then, yet there was no change in him, physically at least, just like her master.
With much said and done, the Chaldean Group rested for a while as the servants took a watch from two sides while the Director and his Co-Director made plans together with the other master with them. A brief respite was that they all had but respite all the same; hence Lord Uzumaki had Cadet Fujimaru sleep for a few hours.
Then, his actual preparations began.
"You can feel him, don't you?"
"I could smell his stench the moment we arrived here, and we know where he is…" his reply left something off, and his old friend noticed it.
"Fujimaru and Kyrielight worry you, and it's obvious," Kurama stated while Naruto shrugged.
"I'm their commanding officer; I'm in charge of their lives… now, if it was just us and Olga, that's an entirely different matter, and I would not hesitate to atomise this singularity at moment's notice after we get that blasted mage, of course."
Their conversation would have to take a pause at that moment, however, with Caster approaching him with slight unease, if his senses are correct, which they are, almost all the time.
"Sétanta," he called out, while the servant sighed loudly and just ignored it as he approached the Director.
"Old man, I need to talk to you."
"About?"
"This place."
"Before that," he said, finally turning towards the servant, who flinched at his look.
"Calm yourself, boy."
The servant allowed a sigh to leave his mouth as the Director took stock of his surroundings once more, on which, nothing changed much; it was still a raging inferno out there.
"Now, speak."
"… I've already talked to that magus and the kid about what happened here," said the Child of Light, while the Director paid a glance towards the resting members of their group.
"Holy Grail War gone wrong?" he asked rhetorically, and Sétanta snorted in mild amusement.
"Understatement wouldn't cut what happened." Eyes towards a particular place, the Caster grimaced at the memories that occurred in the recent past.
"Somewhere along the line, our war got replaced by something, and fire took over the entire town overnight, taking most of the humans here, or ended up like stone, no thanks to Lancer, good riddance, by the way," he explained with some sorrow and smugness when the shadowed Lancer was mentioned.
"Anyway, we should have been taken out the moment our masters were killed, but in the midst of all that, there was a Saber who restarted the war."
Naruto noticed the pointed way Cu Chulainn mentioned a Saber, which implied one thing that he knew already, thanks to Father Aurelius, but this was a complete confirmation.
"King Arthur," stated Naruto, and with a grim nod, Sétanta confirmed it.
"She attacked like it was in her blood, mowing down servant after servant, and I'm the only one left here until you lot came about."
The Director, as well as the Vice-Director listening behind their communication device, took notes in their heads. The remaining staff in Chaldea have been put in the Command Room, except the Chief Engineer, who has her own set of work commissioned for her.
"How long ago?"
Silence descended to Caster, slightly stumped as he searched for an answer.
"I… am not sure, it feels very recent, and I know those servants Saber defeated were corrupted by this deep, black filth that turned them into her pawns some time ago, yet… it is as if we are…"
"Reality in shambles, frozen time?" offered Naruto.
"Along those lines; as I said, our war got turned into something else," continued Sétanta with a shrug, but paid no more thought about it and moved on.
"That Lancer, Medusa, she was just a corpse kept together by that miasma… defeating Saber may possibly end this twisted war, and trust me, old man, I've been trying."
Lord Uzumaki nodded, having no reason to doubt Caster at all, but of course, their chat was nowhere near over.
"That Saber you brought with you… she was the same Saber of this war before that miasma turned her into something else, but your Saber… she's rather different," he said, slightly amused at his observation.
"Well, she and your old mentor were friends, courtesy of yours truly."
Amusement turned to horror rather quickly.
"Y-you mean?"
"Yes."
"Fuck."
"Now then, why are you a Caster?"
Horror turned to depression in quick succession.
Naruto heard him grumble about it, but now, he had asked the question Sétanta avoided in their travel.
"… being a Caster is such a bad fit for this… how the hell can a Caster survive in this kind of war?" he whined at Naruto, who raised an eyebrow, perplexed for a moment, but he chuckled soon after.
"Stop laughing! If I was summoned as a Lancer, I could kill that Saber with one strike," he stomped, still whining and grumbling.
"Hah! Scáthach would break character before throwing her spear at you while laughing."
"Don't call her name!" Lord Uzumaki laughed louder, which woke up the napping members of their group.
"I hate to interrupt your fun, but on your six," the calm voice of the Vice-Director contrasted the situation he implied, and the Director, without any warning, responded.
"Suijinheki…" he muttered, and a vast wall of water appeared from thin air and shielded the entire group from the sudden attack.
An explosion rocked the school building and woke up the rest of their group; steam hissed from the initial clash while Caster narrowed his eyes to trace the source of the attack, but not before paying notice to Naruto's response.
"Water out of thin air, colour me surprised old man… but this attack, hmm, it's that Archer bastard."
"Move!" Naruto ordered, and Mash did what she could and carried Ritsuka in her arms, much to the Cadet's embarrassment, while Naruto took Olga in his arms, away from the school, towards somewhere else.
However, as they ran away from the school, most of the group noticed a presence coming closer, fast and from above.
Steel met steel; swords met shield; Archer met Shielder.
Mash blocked the melee attack of the hostile servant with her massive shield while the Archer jumped away, landing nearby.
"You sure you're fine alone, you hopeless worshipper?" taunted Caster while the altered Archer remained stoic until he finally noticed the third servant.
Arturia stood guard, eyes narrowed and forward; her steely gaze threatened to break the composure of Archer, and her presence already sent confusion on his mind, but he shook it off and focused back on Caster with a glare.
"I don't recall worshipping anyone, but… I'll at least extend the courtesy of kicking out unwelcomed guests," replied the Archer, to which Caster snorted, but this brief moment gave Olga the time she needed.
In a flash of light from the tip of her index finger, a number of bullets that looked like stars came blazing towards the Archer, but it was for naught.
Archer blocked all of her attacks while the others watched.
"I am the head of the Animusphere Family! You will not get in our way."
Silence until Archer came to a realisation.
"Ah… yes, Stargazers," he said, contempt in his voice.
"You should've just stayed up in your mountains… watching stars to your heart's content. You, humans, are too unfit for any great cause."
Anger crept into Olga's psyche, something snapped within her, and those eyes reflected it.
"We… have continuously proven the value of this world. The divine art of protecting civilisation itself is our mission! The one unbreakable rule of the Animuspheres!" Her voice rang across the area, but Archer remained unmoved.
"Such a pitiful sight… but so be it," he answered, but before he could say anything else, he found Arturia right in front of him, sword at hand.
Naruto looked towards Sétanta, who nodded and vanished somewhere. Meanwhile, Mash and Ritsuka came to Olga's side as Arturia and Archer clashed.
Archer found himself in a conundrum, this particular servant should not be here, and only mixed emotions arose from inside him; alas, no further thought could form within him.
"!"
The King of Knights was already before him, sword about to fall upon his head, and it was only in a nick of time that he managed to dodge, but even that was barely sufficient.
"… she should not be this fast!"
His mind ran a thousand miles a second as he tried to formulate plans, but all were for naught. The moment he landed on his feet a few yards away, Arturia had already gained enough distance to strike him down.
Mash watched anxiously as the fight went on; she watched as Arturia masterfully did battle and pushed the rogue Archer back. She studied the exchange of blades and further cemented her need to train and make up for her lack of experience, not to mention her Noble Phantasm that refused to manifest.
Meanwhile, Ritsuka stood beside her, silent but on guard; the young man glanced towards her with concern. He could feel something was off with Mash, being his servant first and foremost, but also on an instinctive level, through the bond they share.
An explosion interrupted their thoughts.
Arturia kept Archer at bay, all while she talked with her master telepathically; their bond is at its strongest, never to wane, never to fade, such is the nature of her master's summoning system, built upon Chaldea's system, but has become his wholly.
"Now!"
Then she suddenly jumped back, which confused Archer until he heard a voice.
"Retribution is nigh… a forest that cleanses the sins of humanity…"
WICKER MAN!
Mash, Ritsuka and Olga watched as the massive Noble Phantasm of Caster towered above the town and there, upon its right shoulder, Caster stood smugly.
"Never underestimate the Sage of the Forest, you thrice-damned Archer!"
Archer never saw it coming, a wooden hand falling down and capturing him.
"It's the end for you!" shouted Caster as his Noble Phantasm burned in a massive explosion and with it, the tainted Archer.
Shielder watched in awe, and then a strike of sadness came upon her.
"Ugh, I swear… you aren't going to rouse up your Noble Phantasm by making pouty faces like that." Mash's thoughts were interrupted by Olga, who sighed and then turned to her with a calm face.
"A servant is a sort of divine aid from the stars. Their master is the one who reaches for those stars, which means something needs to pull the master and servant into place… and you two have that," she continued while Ritsuka and Caster celebrated; meanwhile, Naruto and Arturia approached them.
"Well said, Olga," said the Director while his servant nodded from the back.
"You must face up to why and how, you want to lend him your powers," he said as he turned to Mash, who glanced towards Ritsuka.
"And I can clearly see that whoever the heroic spirit granted you those powers, he resonates with your hopes and feelings." Mash remained silent as she went into further deep thought. Meanwhile, Arturia looked away, for she already knew the identity of the heroic spirit that imparted his powers to Mash, but it was not in her place to say anything.
"Be more honest about your own heart, Mashmallow; you'll get there," he stated with finality before he winked at her as he patted her head; then he faced the other two in their group.
"Oi, you two, stop grinning at each other; let's go. Saber awaits."
A/N: Yes, I know, I'm late. Life happened; suffice to say, I absolutely hate this other half of the year.
Previews:
"Look at that one, Arturia. Think she eats as much as you do?"
"I will not dignify that with a response."
"FLAUROS! You're going to die a horrible death!"
"!"
"Yes, I know exactly what and who you are!"
