Chapter 2: The Then And Now

Prologue

Years following the end of the Fourth Shinobi War, and the defeat of the evil moon goddess Kaguya at the hands of earth's mightiest warriors, the nations of the Land of Fire welcomed a new chapter of peace, and prosperity that helped join together former enemies into a close alliance with each other.

The peace holding together the tight bonds of former rivals would soon be shaken as the unexpected attack by the forces of Toneri Otsutsuki once again placed the entire world in a state of panic. It was then up to the combined efforts of both heirs of Asura, and Indra to put an end to the threat of the last surviving Otsutsuki.

End of Prologue

Otsutsuki Moonfortress

Both heroes were able to land on the surface of the moon thanks to Sasuke's Amenotejikara ability that helped them spare no expense in arriving in the inner core of the moon. Time was of the essence as the planet itself was falling victim to being bombarded by the satellite as pieces of its surface gave way due to the heavy pressure of the earth's gravity breaking chunks from the exterior.

"Did you ever imagine yourself having to fight on the planet's moon?."

"Too bad is it all for the wrong reasons though?."

"I know that, but still we're currently standing on another planet who else can say the same thing. It's not everyday that people are given the opportunity to travel outside of earth."

"What about the time that Kaguya transported us through multiple dimensions during the war?."

"That was different!."

"How the hell was that any different from what we're doing Naruto!."

"Because it wasn't fun."

"Neither is this!."

"I get that part, but we've gotten much stronger since then. Am not trying to insuitate that this is gonna be a walk in the park, only that with our combined strength we'll surely have the upperhand."

"We first have to take down the Tenseigan core, and once that's done with then I'll start to feel comfortable enough with our current odds against Toneri."

"As much as I hate to say it, but the Uchiha is right Kit."

"Since when did you start taking sides?!."

"Only the sides that make sense."

"Traitor!."

"Fine, fine I won't say anything else."

"The sooner we take care of this, the sooner we can go back home."

"Or back to Sakura"

"Shut up."

The duo continued their journey in silence as they proceeded further deep within the castle, all while clearing a path through the many of Toneri's puppet army, and other forms of dangerous traps hidden in plain sight. It wasn't long before both were able to reach the center of the moon's core, unfortunately for the two shinobi they weren't alone as a certain individual was there waiting to greet them.

"Well, I was starting to suspect that the two of you would never show up."

"Can't blame us for being late, for time visiting the moon."

"I would have hoped that your lowly species would willingly submit to your inevitable demise, but I guess that was asking for too much."

"Sorry to disappoint. But given that our home is in the mist of being torn apart by a madman with a petty vendetta we would have hoped to arrive much earlier." The remark of being petty went unwarranted as Toneri's right eye twitched at the statement.

"How about we end this feeble chatter, and get straight to the point."

"Are you ready, Naruto?."

"Let's kick his ass, Sasuke!."

Keeping a short distance of a few feet from where Toneri was standing, both ninjas kept a wary eye on their target as a means of making sure to not fall for any sort of tricks, thus they entered into their respective battle stances.

As if by second nature Naruto's body instantly became shrouded in a golden cloak that emitted a strong, but natural flow of vitality. Sasuke in his part activated the power of the Rinnegan, while unholstering his blade at the same time.

The Otsutsuki in return wasted no time either in relishing in the energy of the Tenseigan that quickly covered his entire body in an ethereal green glow that closely resembled that of Naruto's Tail Beast Mode.

No further words were spoken as all three combatants took a split second before launching into a foray of attacks all of which quickly started to decimate the interior of the core.

A series of shadow clones soon populated the underground, and launched themselves as speeding projectiles towards Toneri, who was able to sidestep each, and every one of them as if they were too slow to touch him.

Not waiting for an invasion to join in the struggle, Sasuke found his opening in sneaking behind Toneri, and brought down his katana at blinding speed at his enemy's back.

No sooner than that he did, was he sword intercepted mid-air by the tight grip, and forcely pried from his hand, and then kicked in the abdomen sending him flying back.

Not letting up in creating more clones of himself, Naruto hid himself within one of the crowds in attempt to land a flurry of hits, but was instead proved to be failure as all the clones were dispersed as soon as the fiend himself spread out a barrage of energy projectiles throughout the surroundings.

Without having a moment to conjure up more clones, Naruto felt himself being lifted by the throat, and pummeled by countless blows all over his body, and thrown violently upwards through multiple layers of rock in till stopping with a loud thud on the 7th sheet.

Before he could react, Toneri followed up his attack by landing a devastating kick directly on the blonde midsection with a resounding crunch being heard. The force of the attack further propelled Naruto through the interior crust, sending him flying into the wilderness of the forest outside of the castle.

"Fire Style: Phoenix Flower Jutsu!"

Toneri almost took a moment of glee in savoring his inflicion on pain upon the blonde nuisance, but was cut short as he soon got taken by surprise by a series of flaming projectiles exploding once they came into conduct with him. This was soon followed-up by a powerful jab to the side of his kidney, and another straight to the temple that quickly placed him under a severe spell of disorientation. He finished his attack on the pale madman by hitting him with the blunt of his Kusanagi with full force resulting in the emerald fiend being sent careening through miles worth of soil with a thundering explosion.

Sasuke quickly shunshin to where Naruto was, and was surprised at the sight of his friend struggling to pick himself up, while also struggling to breath.

"Are you alright?."

"I feel weak all of the sudden"

"The bastard absorbed too much of your chakra with all those hits he landed on you. Am working on trying to restore as much as he took, but whatever technique he used damaged some of your coils, so it's taking a bit of time!".

"Are you serious!"

"If I wasn't I wouldn't have brought it up, you dumb idiot!. So just don't let yourself get too close for him to drain anymore of your power."

"What was it you said earlier about this being easier than Kaguya?"

"I still stand behind those remarks!." He exclaimed while getting back on his feet as he felt some of his energy returning, albeit a bit slowly for his taste. "Besides we know that Toneri relies heavily on the Tenseigan for his power, so if we're able to destroy that then he won't be much of an issue to deal with."

As if the enemy had heard Naruto's statement about his supposed weakness, the ground began to check uncontrollably from the direction in which Toneri was sent flying, that both ninja's noticed the ground near the vicinity begin to rise from the soil, and begin to take form.

The moon-base creation soon started to shape itself into the structure of an immense beast of pure rock that resembled the likes of a massive boulder with short stunted arms, and arms alongside a human face in the middle with a set of horns on its forehead.

"Do you think he heard us?"

"Knowing your bad luck, I guess he did. Either way, I'll try to keep him busy long enough for you to fully recharge. With him away from the core, we can make the job easier on us to take him down, so get going already!."

"Right, and don't go dying on me either because if you do,Sakura will make sure that'll join you.''With that, Naruto didn't have to be told anything else as he swiftly made himself scarce, and went ahead on getting below ground once more.

With his friend,Sasuke himself began to accumulate a huge surge of chakra, and began the process of unleashing his ultimate armour, Susanoo as the beast began to get closer to his general location.

Toneri would never admit to the surprise that awaited him as he began to get near the spot where the two trespassers were held up, but once he got near he could only make the silhouette of the black-haired one standing alone, and the whiskered fellow gone without a trace of him anymore. But what truly surprised the last of the moon branch was not of the missing blonde, it was instead the purple glow that started to generate from within the body of the Uchiha.

"Only one?. Not liking the thought of not knowing where the enemy was, especially if it meant roaming around too close to his energy source was something he could not afford to be careless of. Dispersing a large quantity of chakra to the remainder of his doll servants to relocate, and guard the core.

"Tch…. only about 2,047 are left" Knowing that even with that many protecting the Tenseigan, he knew they wouldn't stand much of a chance against the likes of the whisker-face cretin. " I need to end this as soon as possible.

What happened next happened too fast for Toneri to anticipate as the creature that he was currently on suffered a hasty blow to the side to the right of his face leaving a major tent. The rock behemoth was almost tossed to its sides by the weight of the punch, but quickly found its footing. The damage on its face is starting to heal thanks in part to the energy being provided by its creator.

The sight of a purple arm retracting after landing the blow was enough for Toneri to see a sight that shocked the last of the moon branch which was the purple glow appearing from within the body of the Uchiha that took physical form, and began to grow tremendously at a fast pace.

The now complete Susanoo then jumped at the chance of adding more of the same damage to its target, but Toneri wouldn't let himself get caught by surprise again.

"Such a worthless gesture," he stated by dusting off some of the dirt that landed on him during the first impact. "You won't be able to stand a chance against my golem, the longer you fight,the stronger it becomes."

Noticing that started to feel drowsy after landing the first punch, Sasuke looked at the fist that he used, and saw cracks starting to form as a sign of the chakra being weakened.

"Am beginning to hate chakra absorption." He said while looking up at the smug face of the Otsutsuki whose eyes oozed out a wave of self-superiority. "Not style, or any shred of originality, just a human size flea draining the strength of others."

"...Skill?" He looked as if he wanted to laugh at such a notion. "What will be the point of having to resort to petty russes, when might is the only true essence in winning a battle."

"I'll just prove how much of a coward you are. A man too scared to rely on his own power, and instead having to resort to stealing it those stronger than yourself." All of which was stated, while maneuvering Susanoo in a battle stance with its newly formed sword held up high.

"Well, how about we put that sentiment to the test, shall we?" To prove his point he decided to add a bit of chakra into his creation making it grow much bigger with added arms growing from its back. The moment was yet from over as Toneri glowed much brightly as he slowly entered the massive creature through its head leading to the entire structure to take up a greenish hue with its eyes having a menacing tint to them.

"If I knew being inside a bulk of rocks felt this terrible I would never consider doing something like this." His voice came out of the mouth of the monster, but entirely warped beyond recognition."But given the circumstances, I'll make an exception."

"I just hope that idiot is there by now" He didn't have much time left to ponder over the fate of his friend as Toneri made his push to attack."Just hurry up, Naruto" With the thoughts over the safety of his friend gone, he then moved ahead to meet the enemy head on with his own attack.

"Why the hell are there so many damn mannequins!?"

Said blonde could not have understated his current predicament any better as the large number of duplicate dolls were never ending in sight and growing at the moment with each new wave appearing from all general directions.

The entire area was littered with the parts of recently destroyed muppets whose human-like features made for an eerie scene reminiscent of a massacre. Naruto was able to re-enter the underground through the gap his body made in part of Toneri's barrage, and with the core in sight he was about to ready one of his signature attacks when he was besieged on all sides by Otsutsuki lookalikes.

The mindless foot soldiers wouldn't have posed much of a problem for the young ninja, but for the life, and even the demon sealed inside the fatigue in his body could still be felt, and having to survive an endless assault of duplicates didn't help with the matter either.

"Kuruma, how is it going in there? I really need some here!" Before having dodge chakra laced blade from severing his head from his neck, and dishing a devastating left jab under the sternum leading to a sickening crush that completely pulverized everything below.

"Am. Doing The Best I. Can…... Hear!" sounding very hoarse as if it were struggling immensely just to speak. "Whatever that pale freak used, it really did a number on your system.

"Is there any way to fix it?"

"Not at the moment, but I'll try my best in purging it out!"

"Dammit!"

The moment was soon cut short as the sound of the roof of the ceiling of the giving way revealed the giant forms of both Sasuke, and Toneri grabbing each other in a deadly foray. The moment of impact was so strong that the entire underground shook violently, while creating a powerful force that blasted all remaining dolls against the cavern walls. Those not crushed by the potency of the collision were instead smashed to a pulp by the colossal guests.

"Whoa!" The shock itself was greatly warranted as seeing both giants crashing from above was unexpected to the blonde, but beneficial as the path to the core was now clear. And the sight of his friend keeping Toneri distracted was enough for him to start charging up one of his strongest attacks in his arsenal by utilizing most of the chakra that he had left to use, and starting to run directly at the Tenseigan.

Knowing what he was about to do, Toneri saw the whisker fool towards the core as he picked up momentum, while chagrin up a swirling orb in his right hand, and understanding what he was about to do he set out to prevent it from succeeding.

"As if I would let you get away with it!" The yell itself was accompanied with the movement of the remainder of his arms that weren't severed from the Uchichia blade, and set out quickly to pummel the sage.

Only to be intercepted by Susanoo when it grabbed the rock behemoth from the back, intertwining his arms underneath the rock behemoth, preventing his arms from moving, and slowly pushing him down.

The victory was short-lived as a smaller arm rapidly expanded from the rock monster's sides, and launched itself towards Naruto. The young sage once spotted a gigantic hand reaching towards him, and it seemed to have almost touch if it weren't for the arm to instead redirect his movement as Sasuke tilted Toneri to his sides that resulted in the entire creature moving towards the right.

The shift of the giant hand almost made the blonde sigh out a breath of relief if it wasn't for said rock appendage hitting the bridge connecting the Tenseigan leading to its utter destruction.

Seeing the bridge continuing to fall apart, Sasuke quickly threw Toneri to the side, and extended Susanoo's hand to create a make-shift bridge, before feeling a rough clasp around his armour holding him place from moving an inch, and feeling his chakra leaving his body rapidly.

The sight of Toneri leaving his vessel, and flying towards Naruto, who at the moment was able to use Susanoo's hand as a pad to jump up towards the core with his attack at half-mast ready to release at the power source. This made the Uchiha worry so he acted fast by shooting a shuriken laced with enough chakra to convert into a destructive missile.

"No you don't! The anger in the Otsutsuki was laced with such hate that his vision was clouded in red, with a tinge of worry as the blonde crept closer mid-air at his most valuable possession.

"Just… A little bit closer" Said blonde was sweating profusely as the rasengan in his hand turned dark grey as a white swirl started to form around it, but not quick enough. "How much longer, Kuruma!"

"Right… about now!" Kyuubi's shout echoed throughout his vessel's mind with such urgency. "Go now, before he catches up Naruto!"

"RIGHT!"

The rasengan was now complete, and now inches away in landing on its target, but fate had other things in store for the Uzumaki. Seeing the attack coming closer to the Tenseingan, Toneri shot out a massive beam of light towards Naruto, but it seemed that his aim was clouded as the shuriken thrown at him made contact creating a huge block of smoke.

This led to Naruto's attack hitting true.

"Tailed Beast Rasenshuriken!"

Time seemed to have slowed down as the attack slowly started to rip through the core for the Uzumaki, but what he didn't anticipate was Toneri's attack also coming into conduct with his own around the same time.

The combined forces would soon erupt in a tremendous discharge that became a huge quake that could be felt throughout the moon, engulfing the entire room in a blinding light. As Naruto was too close to the target he was enveloped by the blast that took him, and Toneri together.

The explosion came, and went as briskly as it formed with the only light coming out of the crater that was formed from Sasuke, and the Otsutsuki during their brawl. Said Uchiha who was safe during the explosion, due to his armour shielding him from the damage, but once he gathered his bearings the view that greeted him made the pit of his stomach churn.

"Naruto!"

The surrounding that greeted Naruto was that of black, and white color as he was thrown in a strong current within a vortex that kept spinning around violently. He could feel his entire wanting to come apart as the pressure within the cyclone felt like it was tugging at his entire body.

Within the revolving whirlpool the sight of pitch black, and pure white lines circling around the blonde was a dizzying view, but what made even worse was the dark void at the end of the ride seemed too frightening to consider what would happen if he went through it.

"Uzumaki!"

As if his problems weren't made bad enough the view of Toneri slowly coming towards was something that the young sage never wanted to see, but soon morphed into expression of terror as he single handedly saw his foe being ripped apart within a split second.

"Kuruma, are you seeing this!" He desperately to his closest companion as the feeling of his growing heavier grew. "I…. need… some..help….here!

The reply came quickly, but dreaded.

"Kit, I need you to listen to me now!" In a tone as serious as Naruto had ever heard Kuruma used before."You won't last any longer inside this void, and right now I am trying my best in making sure you don't get shredded into pieces! So I want you to follow what I have to say without objections!"

"Alright!"

"What I want you to do is concentrate all of your chakra, and form a barrier around yourself!" He instructed his jailer with the utmost expertise. "And I want you to form a protective barrier around yourself, because by the looks of it you won't survive what lies at the end of the line!."

"Got it!" He wasted no time in setting up the blockade, but he could still feel the pressure from within." Okay, I have it ready, what's next?"

Pausing for a moment, Kuruma chose his next words carefully.

"Am gonna release myself"

"What?" almost made speechless at such a request. "But… you won't survive being outside in this plain."

"And neither you." speaking to him as if it were a child being spoken to by his father. "But at this point we both know how it is gonna end, and I'll be damned if I am gonna lay around doing nothing in trying not to see you die in front of me."

"..."

"You gotta do it"

"..."

"Don't be stubborn about this!" His voice almost cracking as he spoke. " Especially now" His voice becoming more quieter with each word spoken. "Is my choice, I'll do it with, or without"

"I don't want you to die…." His voice almost went silent at the end. "We've been through so much over the years, and now you want to punch out, then I won't accept this!" adding the outburst to nail the message across.

"Stubborn to the end, eh?"

"You damn right am!"

"Well, I guess I have to be the one saving your life once more" With that declaration, Kuruma unsealed himself, and set materialized outside of Naruto's body right in front of him.

"Don't do this, please!"

"Sorry, but that's one request that I can't do" He stated with a heavy heart as he placed his paws around the barrier surrounding the blonde, and proceeded to input an influx of Chakra helping to reinforce it to the best he could. The storage of power into the protective circle took up a golden glow as the immensity of power poured into it started to take drastic change. The pressure of being outside took immediate effect upon the giant beast as he could feel his body starting to break.

"Tch….." The pain soon started to take a toll on the fox, and with all the chakra that he was giving up, it was only a matter of seconds before he was entirely vaporized.

"Please, just stop!" If the tears weren't flowing then, there were now as they cascaded down his cheeks in witnessing his best oldest friend being slowly dying in front of him. "Don't leave me alone"

"You're not alone" he said this with a bittersweet smile on his face. " You were never alone to begin with." This time tapping a single claw on the roof of the barrier to get his attention. Since the moment you were born I was always there to protect you, and watching you grow up from an orphan living in the slums of Konoha to being one of its greatest shinobi made me so proud of what you had accomplished." The tears now starting to rain down from Kurama's eyes." Seeing the close bonds you made with the people you meet, the lives you changed, the lives you inspired, and the world that you saved made me happy just being there to help when I could."

Within the span of a split second that seemed as an eternity between both close companions, both looked into each other's eyes, and saw the love only family gave each other, and no further words needed to be said to convey what they felt at that moment.

Knowing his time was up, Kuruma let out the only works that made him almost not want to leave.

"So don't go dying on me too early"

With that, the once great nine-tailed fox was soon wiped from existence as he smiled once more at the only other human being who he would ever consider his own flesh, and blood.

Now left, and the impending impact waiting to happen, Naruto slowly closed his eyes, and waited for the inevitable to happen.

Pentagram City-Post Crash

Having crash-landed on the hard earth took a heavy strain on the blonde to stay awake. Other than the pain that kept him from moving his body, his fading vision could make out the skyline above him.

"Why?... Is the sky red?" His mind teetering at the brink of unconsciousness, he heard the noise of footsteps getting closer.

Straining to move his head slightly to his right, the sight that welcomed him were that of dark silhouettes with glowing red eyes approaching slowly. Their bodies shrouded in smoke from the crater gave them an unnatural appearance.

"Please… let be it someone friendly"

Darkness soon welcomed him as his vision faded to black, and his mind going blank, delving into a deep slumber.

End of Chapter 2

With the end of the second chapter, I just want to state how the story is gonna unfold around Naruto.

I know that using Toneri may not be the most popular choice, but I wanted to bridge that gap between Shippuden, and Boruto. So the Last made the most sense. Toneri may have some new attacks that weren't in the movie, but given the fact that his character used the same attacks as Naruto I decided to make up some new ones. Naruto's age will be around 24, so a bit older instead of him always been written as 16, or 18 years old.

First off, yes Kuruma is no longer part of Naruto, but that still doesn't mean that he is going to be weak, or without the sage mode. Am basing much of this from chapter 55 of Boruto. I get that taking away Kuruma, and Sasuke's Rinnegan was meant to downgrade them from being too op for the story. (Doesn't mean I was happy with the way it happened, but I understand why Kishimoto did it)

Naruto is still gonna be strong, but not as strong as he was before, and won't have an infinite amount of Chakra, his strongest attacks will still be used, but not all time giving the handicapped as it will kill him if he runs out of energy so the usage will be limited.

So I am gonna mix of few elements from other works to implement a new arsenal of attacks.

Am stuck in between using techniques from Hokuto no Ken, or power-ups from Zetman.

I'll be open for any other considerations that you may provide.
