It had been a few weeks since school had started, and Esme was already ahead in her studies, per usual. She was sitting alone at a long table in the back of the Library. She spent most of her free time in the library or in the Ravenclaw common rooms doing research and working on her assignments. For the first few days, she had sat with the rest of her new house girlfriends. But it quickly became apparent that their studying often devolved into talking about school gossip and which boys were the most attractive. A conversation that, though she was happy to be included in, though she did not have much to add. She was grateful that the girls seemed to accept the fact that she did not like Sirius Black as an entertaining badge of honor. As many of the witches would have been happy to be getting the attention that she had been receiving from the young wizard, especially Digby, but they seemed to not see her as competition due to her blatant rejection of the young wizard's advances.
Which was an achievement in itself as he had been absolutely relentlessly charming towards her. Though the more she heard about him and his antics in the school with some of the other witches it became much easier to attribute his actions to a game, and the moment she gave in would be the moment he would win and she would lose. But that was not going to happen. She knew his future, which was what made his actions detestable to her, and made her constant rejection of him much easier. He seemed to be so close with his friends. Kind to Pettigrew. Friendly with Lupin. And treated Potter like a brother. Yet she knew he would kill one of them and betray the rest.
She really felt bad for Pettigrew. He seemed kind of helpless when it came to spell casting, and he seemed to almost idolize Black. There was no way he would have stood a chance against the Black wizard whom she had to admit was semi-talented. At the very least he was inventive when it came to fooling around with spells in class.
"Bulstrode." A quiet monotone voice called out to her, breaking her away from her thoughts
She turned her head and smiled at the newcomer, "Snape."
"Do you mind?" He asked gesturing to the seat across from her with his books
"Please go ahead," Esme said pulling some of her books closer to her so that he would have enough room to spread his books out too
They had been meeting in the library every few days to study together. He was a lot smarter than the other Ravenclaws wanted to admit. They kept warning her about being near him, but overall he had been begrudgingly pleasant. Especially when they talked about potions. When she had gotten her invitation to join the Slughorn club last week she had been elated. Severus was quick to let her know that it was little more than a social club for the influential students and those with talent. Esme wasn't sure if she was in the influential group, but she bloody well knew she and Snape were the best in their class at potions. Though she kept her secret weapon to herself. The book that her professor and now growing friend had given her back in her time had been incredibly beneficial to research and help her come up with inventive ways to alter potions. She was still not as impressive as Snape was, but she wasn't too far behind him. And the more she worked with him the better she got at altering potion instructions and ingredients.
It felt bloody unreal that she was becoming friends with her past teacher, but it made her feel special that he seemed to tolerate her and not the other students. And he never tried anything with her like some of the other boys around her did. She pretended she was oblivious to it, but that was just so that the other Ravenclaw girls could continue being a buffer between her and really any of the boys that had tried to approach her over the last few weeks. Snape mostly talked about work and research. Which was a relief in itself. She liked Snape but not well enough to call him anything more than a friend. In fact, she didn't know anything about being more to someone than a friend, even being a friend was a difficult enough task in her mind.
"So have you gotten the invitation yet?" Snape asked opening his books
"Yes, it felt a bit well…"
"Tacky?" Snape finished
"Yeah" Esme sighed pulling out the overly embellished card stock
"I swear every time he does these parties Slughorn thinks that it is like he is throwing a party for the sacred 28." Snape said exacerbated, "Well, are you going to attend?"
"It is the first one of the year. And I haven't been to many parties, so I think I will give it a try." Esme said, putting the invitation back in her bag, "Plus I don't want to make a bad impression on Slughorn."
"Well that is true, he is the kind of wizard that would take offense to a declined invitation, especially from a fellow sacred 28 family member." Snape pulled some parchment out
"At least I know that it will be one place where I won't have to see my cousin." Esme said, feeling bad about how relieved she actually was. She never thought that she would be relieved not to see her mother growing up. Initially, she had hoped that they could become friends, that somehow she would have a positive relationship with her mother in this time when she couldn't have one in her own time. But her mother seemed to be as wicked in this time as she had been in her time. Seems as though the dislike towards her own daughter was instinctual somehow, Esme thought bitterly.
Snape began fidgeting with his quill, "... Someone… a friend, might be joining us today. He promised he was just going to study. I just wanted to warn you."
Esme cocked her head, as far as she was aware of, Snape didn't have any friends other than her, "I'd be happy to meet your friend. Who is it?" she asked curiously
"Malfoy." Snape mumbled
"Malfoy?" Esme said in shock, "The Slytherin with the long blond hair?"
"Yes, the one and only." Snape said in his usual sarcastic voice
"Why would he want to study with us? Isn't he a year ahead of us?" Esme nervously whispered leaning over her book. She was supposed to stay away from the handsome wizard, and so far she had done a good job of it.
Snape per usual kept his features schooled and calm but the twiddling of his quill let on that he was more nervous than he normally was, Snape lowered his voice to a whisper "He actually, well probably, wants to ask you to…"
"Severus, good to see you." Lucius interrupted coming around the corner of the library to their table, "And Esme what a wonderful sight you are to see this evening."
There was a moment of silence, as Esme thought about how to deal with the situation. She could outright refuse Sirius Black since he was no longer connected to his family. But Malfoy was very much still in his father's good graces as far as she knew. And all of the rumors about him were that he was the ideal of a perfect pure blooded wizard. She looked at Snape as though to ask what to say, but his head was down in a book almost straining to not look up at the interaction that was about to happen.
"Hello, Mr. Malfoy." Esme said pleasantly enough, a fake smile on her face, "What brings you to this corner of the Library."
"Well, my dear friend Severus said that he was studying with a new friend, which I thought was strange as Severus is very selective about those he keeps company with. And being that I am a Prefect for Slytherin house I thought it would be wise for me to see who he was spending his time with." Malfoy said, placing his bag next to Esme's.
"...I see." Esme said, "Well now that you have seen who Snape is spending his time with I suppose you will be on your way."
"I was actually hoping to join you two. There is not a problem with that, is there Severus?" Lucius asked, turning his eyes from Esme to Snape who gave a nod, eyes not leaving the pages of his book. "Esme I hope you wouldn't mind adding another to your group."
Esme clenched her jaw, she felt a bit betrayed by Snape. He could have at least warned her a little sooner. Allowed her to come up with an escape plan. "Although I don't see what you would have to gain from sitting with two of your juniors, I would never explicitly deny a member of the Malfoy family permission to sit with us. And after all you are Snape's friend…" Esme said through a tight smile.
"Oh but there is something I would gain that is very valuable to me." Malfoy said sliding onto the bench next to her
"And what would that be?" Esme asked nervously
"Time spent with you my dear." Malfoy replied leaning down towards her ear, whispering, "From the moment I saw you I knew you were worth spending time with." He picked up her left hand and kissed the top of it before putting it down where it was. Then after giving her a knowing smile, surprisingly he then pulled out a book from his satchel and began to read.
Esme didn't know what to do. Should she leave, or would that be considered rude. She fought back a blush, but she knew she shouldn't have had to in the beginning. She didn't know why she reacted to him the way she did. Her whole body was warm. She could almost feel the tension in their little nook of the library. There was so little distance between his arm and hers.
No, she thought, shaking her head. He had a fiance. Not only that, but a pureblood witch, from the most prominent of the sacred 28 families. She was told to stay away from him. She needed to get away from him. She closed the book she had been reading and began to get up when a large pale hand lightly grasped her arm.
"Are you going somewhere?" Malfoy asked, not removing his hand from her forearm.
"Just…," Esme began her head racing, she looked away from the dark gray eyes to Snape, who briefly looked up and covertly tapped the book he was reading with one finger, "Just going to get a book."
"I am sure Severus can get it for you. What are you looking for?" He asked just as pleasantly as could be.
Great, out of the frying pan into the fire. "Oh he doesn't need to do that. I can get my own books."
"Please, I am sure it would be his pleasure. Am I right, Severus?"
Severus gave a long sigh, before reluctantly putting down his book. "Yes, a Pleasure."
"See." Malfoy said giving Esme a smile
"So what am I looking for exactly?" Snape asked, getting up from the table while giving Esme an apologetic look.
"... a book on charms that has something to do with space, like enlarging it or shrinking it within a confined space." Esme said scrambling for a topic, "You might find one of Fontayne Periculum's charm books. His are usually pretty expansive though a bit hard to grasp sometimes."
As Snape began to walk off Esme slowly sat back down in her seat and looked down at her book. Finally, Malfoy removed his hand from her arm, but instead of going back to his book he leaned on his opposite elbow facing her, "I see you got invited to Slughorn's party."
"How did you know that?" Esme said, turning towards the handsome wizard.
"It's sticking out of the top of your bag." Malfoy said with a smile, "Plus, I have heard the rumors of how smart you are, I would have been shocked if Slughorn didn't invite you."
"How… perceptive of you." Esme said choosing her words carefully
"So has anyone asked you yet?" Malfoy asked
"No, and I was just thinking about going with Severus as a friend. The only other person in my house and class that was invited was Norwood and I think if I went with him I might be sending him the wrong message." Esme said fidgeting with her quill
"And that message would be?"
"That I was interested in him. I'd rather not be the type of witch that strings others along."
"So then would you be opposed to going with me? I know we have only met a few times but I feel as though you would be a very interesting date to have for the evening." Malfoy said, tucking a perfect strand of hair behind his ear.
"... I think that might be inappropriate, to say the least, considering you already have a fiance." Esme responded, this had to be the more respectful way of declining his offer she thought to herself.
"Oh that…" Malfoy shook his head and let out a quiet laugh, "Don't think of that as a problem. She and I have an understanding."
Esme's stomach sank, "Oh really… what kind of understanding?"
"The kind that guarantees my freedom from her until the day of our wedding vows. Don't get me wrong, she seems like a nice enough witch, and I have no arguments against the arranged marriage. She is a Black after all. But she is young, and has a long way to go in terms of becoming a stand-up pureblood witch."
"I am afraid I don't understand, I thought that all of the Black witches were very strictly brought up in the old traditions."
"It is not that she is lacking in manners or something as trivial as that, but she is still a bit immature, and well she is not necessarily at the top of her class. She can be a bit of a bore to talk to." Malfoy reached out and gently grasped Esme's hand, "You on the other hand, are more like a fully blossomed flower. You have the etiquette, the brains, a good disposition, and you are beautiful. The full package. Every wizard with eyes in this school can see it. And if you really don't want to be bothered with others asking you to the party, then having me as your date would stop them cold in their tracks."
Esme's hand felt cool and comfortable in his large hand. His words sounded like honey to her ears, smooth and sweet. But she had to refuse… didn't she? She made a promise to her Mother Petra that she would stay away from him, but she couldn't tell him that. If word got back to his father that she had refused him on the orders of her grandparents then Father Lukas might have a tough time at work. Abraxas Malfoy held a high position in the Wizengamot and in the Ministry of Magic, he held a lot of power and influence in general.
And if she went with him her reputation might be tarnished. She didn't want to be looked at as the witch that was trying to steal another witch's fiance. But if they just went as friends, maybe it wouldn't be so bad.
"I don't know, maybe as friends, it would be really more as acquaintances. I mean we have only met one other time."
"Oh dear, do you find me distatefull?" Malfoy said cocking his head with a worried look on his face
Panicked Esme quickly responded, "No not at all! It is just… look I am new here and I-"
Malfoy cut her off his face quickly returning to his charming smile, "Then going with a prefect will be one way to get to know the people of the school more. I can introduce you to the right people, people worthy of your attention, not like that blood traitor Black that hangs around you like a leach."
Esme gulped, she was at a loss for words. She wasn't sure that she wanted to be introduced to the 'right' people. But she was running out of polite ways to refuse the wizard. She was unable to meet his piercing stare but she could feel the heat of his eyes on her, waiting knowingly for an answer.
After a moment Esme let out a long sigh, at this point, she was just delaying the inevitable, "As a friend."
Malfoys smile grew, "As a friend." he confirmed placing his hand on hers again his tone implying something more that made Esme squirm. She looked at the end of the row of books and saw Snape rounding the corner with a large leather-bound book under his arm and an annoyed expression on his face.
"Ah Snape, good to see you didn't have much trouble finding a book." Malfoy said, nonchalantly returning to his book while subtly removing his hand from hers.
Snape dropped the book on the table in front of Esme and looked between her and Malfoy. He sat back down at the table and opened his book again not acknowledging the heavy atmosphere between the two.
The three continued studying for another hour or so until Malfoy excused himself and left Snape and Esme to their own devices. Esme began tapping the table. Snape ignored her. Finally Esme burst, "You should have told me that he was coming. For Godric's sake, you were one of the ones that warned me to stay away from him!" she animatedly whispered.
"One of the ones?" Snape asked, arching his eyebrow yet not taking his eyes off of his book.
"Yes, one of the ones. Why is it so strange that others would want to warn me to stay away from him." Esme continued in a hushed voice
"Because he is a Malfoy. He is a great connection." Snape continued
"Are you his spokesperson now?" Esme questioned
"He is my house's prefect. What would you want me to do?" Snape offered again not looking up from his book
"At least not leave me alone with him. Now I am stuck going with him to Slughorn's party." Esme finished giving Snape a sharp stare
"So you said yes then." Snape responded
"Well." Esme said defensively, "I tried to politely say no, but it felt like he had a response to everything."
"He always does." Snape huffed, "I would swear his blood was green if I didn't see him get hit by a bludger second year, he is just that much of a Slytherin."
"We are going as friends." Esme said, "So hopefully it wont turn out that bad."
"Oh right, as friends." Snape sarcastically remarked, "How many times have you two met exactly?"
"Twice." Esme said softly, "How can you be so nonchalant about this?"
"How else am I supposed to take this? Malfoy gets what he wants, that is just a part of his nature. So since he has his sights set on you I would suggest you get as boring as possible."
"I am boring. All I do is study and go to class, there is nothing remotely interesting about that." Esme responded
"You are a transfer student from another country, you are from one of the sacred 28 families, you are an accomplished and knowledgeable spell caster, and you are pretty. I think that is all he needs to know about you to validate his interest."
Esme had nothing to say, she had never been one for the center of attention. And she had certainly never been the object of interest of boys before. "Well anyway, we are going as friends." She said half-heartedly.
"If you say so." Snape muttered turning a page
Dinner passed fairly quietly, but by the time of breakfast, the news about Esme going with Lucius to Slughorn's party had begun to spread. This time Esme was acutely aware of the whispers going around about her. As soon as she had sat down for breakfast the girls crowded around the unsuspecting young witch.
"So how did you do it?" Digby demanded roughly sitting down next to Esme
Esme looked over and wiped some sausage fat from her lips, "Do what?"
"Oh come on don't be coy. How did you get Lucius Malfoy to ask you out as his date to Slughorn's party." Digby said rolling her eyes
Esme didn't miss a beat, to try and clear up the situation, "We are going as friends, just friends. I was going to go with Sev but Malfoy asked first."
Mabel Krauss started next, "So you're not going on a date with him then? I mean.. you can see how that would be hard for us to believe."
"You know he has a fiance right?" Digby stated crossing her arms
"Yes I am aware, which is why we are going as friends." Esme replied, starting to take offense to Digby's superiority complex. "So now that we have that cleared up can we all just enjoy breakfast together and get to class."
"How did you two even meet?" Digby continued
"Severus and I were studying together and Malfoy was interested in who his housemate was spending time with. We both needed someone to go with to Slughorn's party, and that was that. Now there is really no reason to look further into it more than that." Esme said, trying desperately to end the conversation there.
Mable Krauss whispered into her ear, "You know I have heard that his family is tied up in all sorts of dark magic business. And with your eye color, people are going to start saying things."
"Look I really do not want to be the center of attention like this, I hate it. That is why I initially refused him, but he just seemed like he had a response for everything that I was saying." Esme said exasperated, "So in the end I was able to talk him down to going as friends. I am not interested in dating Malfoy."
"You turned down Lucius Malfoy?" Digby said, crossing her arms, "Somehow I doubt that."
"Just to the point where we are just going as friends. I really do not understand how many times I have to say this." Esme said shaking her head
"Ok so I would understand why you would turn down Sirius Black." Digby began, "He is no longer the heir of his household and he is a known flirt. But Lucius? He is just perfect."
Esme gave a look to Krauss, who responded with a sympathetic look.
"Digby's right, how did you get your grubby little French hands on Lucius?" a voice said from the table behind them. Esme turned to see her 'cousin' giving her a dark glare. "Maybe it's just true that French witches are more whores than proper witches."
The group went silent. Even the Slytherin girls that were giggling just moments before were now tuned in to the situation.
Esme cleared her throat, she wanted to call her 'cousin' a name or just curse her out, but she knew that Mother Petra would be mortified if she got caught saying anything that was crossing her mind at that moment. So instead she turned to Krauss and loudly said "It is interesting that the people who know you the least always have the most to say."
"I don't need to know you to know that your a thieving little French who-"
"Bulstrode!" the crowd turned to the voice that cut off the young witch. Apparently Lucius Malfoy had been sitting at his usual place a few seats down and had had enough. He had a cold sharp look in his eye as he glared at Esme's 'cousin', "Do not make me have to take points out of my own house for rude language."
"Oh I think that that ship has sailed Mr. Malfoy." Isabell Stewart, Ravenclaw prefect, stood up from her seat a few people down from Esme, "5 points from Slytherin for rude language."
"The situation was under control. I can deal with my own house Stewart." Malfoy said pointedly at the witch
"Really? Because what you interrupted would have been the second insult to a member of my house. If you were really taking charge of things you would have intervened at the first." Isabell Stewart said with ease
"I initially thought it better to let family work out their own problems." Malfoy responded
"Well this is Hogwarts and language like that is not tolerated by anyone or towards anyone. Although I would have thought you would have promptly intervened to save face for a friend." Isabell Stewart said, arching an eyebrow and glancing at Esme, who by now cheeks were dusted with an embarrassing blush at all the attention pulled their way.
Malfoy cleared his throat and stood a little straighter looking at Esme, who refused to meet his softer gaze, "Esme I hope you accept an apology from me for the words of my fellow housemate they were completely out of line and derogatory. You will not be subject to that language again." And with that he gave a sharp look to Esme's 'cousin'.
"Good." Isabell Stewart said sitting down again, "Now that that has been resolved let's get back to breakfast. Classes will be starting shortly you know."
The rest of the Ravenclaw witches in Esme's class sat down obediently and began to eat their breakfast and seemed to change the topic of the conversation completely. The only indicator that the discussion about Malfoy happened at all was the fact that Digby kept glancing over at Esme with a look of envy now and again.
The rest of the day seemed to be going well until it came to the afternoon classes with the Grifindors. As the group of Ravenclaws were walking up to the classroom. Esme noticed a very serious-looking Sirius Black standing outside of the classroom door.
Norwood perusal stood at the front of the group, and began taunting Black as again perusual, "So here to get shot down again are we?"
"Oh get off your high horse would you Norwood. I just need to talk to Bulstrode for a moment." Black said, staring intently at Esme. Something was different about his gaze on Esme. His gray eyes were intense and he was not his usual flamboyant self.
"Oh give it a rest Black we all know she's just gonna turn you down again." Norwood said with a laugh
Esme sighed, "Ok I think that it is time that we all just took a step back. I will talk with Black." Esme turned towards Adeline Fade and Pearl, "Will you two save a seat for me?"
"Sure thing Bulstrode." Adeline Fade said with Pearl nodding quietly behind her, "Alright, come on now, the lot of you into the classroom." Adeline Fade said, gesturing the group of Ravenclaws into the classroom.
As the door closed Black grasped Esme's hand and pulled her away from the door and into an alcove, "Why Malfoy?" Black asked
"Because he asked." Esme said, trying to be nonchalant.
"Look, he is my little cousin's fiance, and I have had the unfortunate pleasure of having to be around him and his family for stretches of time. They are into some dark magic, and they are definitely followers of He Who Should Not Be Named. From what I know your family is mostly neutral. Why bother getting mixed up with Malfoy?"
Esme bit her bottom lip, and looked to the side. Something about the way Black was talking to her made her truly feel like he was worried about her. She didn't know what it was but for some reason she wanted to tell him the truth. "You can't tell the others. They are kind, but some of them have big mouths."
"I promise I won't. Did he threaten you?" Black asked, squeezing her hand that he had yet to let go of.
"No, no nothing like that. It is just that if I were to refuse him there would be a tidal wave of complications especially if he went to his father about it. His father could make things very difficult for my family. We are members of the Sacred 28 families, but we are not ranked that highly among them. We do not hold that much power and we are not nearly as influential as the Malfoys. I just want this party to be over with and for him to lose interest in me already. I don't want my family to get involved just because I wasn't competent enough to stay off of his radar." Esme confided
Sirius suddenly pulled Esme into a hug, he wrapped his arms around her and placed his chin on the top of her head. "We are gonna get you out of this situation."
Esme could smell the faint scent of cigarettes and oak, for a moment she was tempted to let it calm her. Then she remembered who it was that was holding her, this was a wizard that was going to be the direct reason for the death of his friends. Not only that, but she heard from Severus about the way they treated him and the other Slytherins. She quickly pushed away and looked up at the older Black wizard. "I didn't ask for your help. I can take care of this. Plus I have heard about how you and your friends 'help'. Pranks and bullying. I don't want any part of that." she straightened her shoulders and met his eyes, "I really don't. So look, please just leave me alone."
With that Esme went off into the direction of the classroom, leaving the stunned Sirius in the alcove. Making it to her seat between Adeline Fade and Pearl.
"So what did Black have to say to you?" Adeline whispered over to Esme
"Just the same old thing, nothing interesting." Esme said getting her parchment and quill out
A few moments later Sirus Black came back into the classroom and glanced at Esme before taking his normal seat with the rest of the Grifendoors.
"I just don't get it." Sirius mumbled
"What?" James asked Sirius turning from Remus
"I said it doesn't make sense." Sirius said scratching the back of his head
"What? Oh the Bulstrode girl going out with Malfoy? Look, you are just going to have to get over the broad. She is obviously not interested in you, why are you so determined to get in her pants." James said
"It's not about getting into her pants James. She could get into real trouble with Malfoy. I know your family doesn't have any contact with the Malfoys, but I can tell you they are really dark wizards. She is not safe going out with that creepy blond bloke." Sirius said crossing his arms
"I think you are overreacting. She said she didn't want your help right?" James asked
"Yeah, but remember when Evens went to Hogsmeade with that Hufflepuff?" Sirius said giving James the eye
"Ok well I may have overreacted to that situation." James said, looking over at Evans giving her a wave, which was promptly ignored.
"The boy had to go to Madam Pomphry for the parsnips growing from his head, so he had to cancel going with Evans to Hogsmead. It was hilarious. But the fact is that we all got together and got it done. This is as important if not more so." Sirius said
Remus interjected, "Well you offered your help didn't you, and since she said no, my vote is to stay out of the situation. Some rando Hufflepuff is one thing, but Malfoy is a prefect. We could get into some serious trouble messing with him, he practically runs the Slytherin house."
"Yeah." James added half listening
"Well looks like I will just have to try something on my own then." Sirius said getting up, he walked over to Lily Evans. He popped up to sit on the desk in front of the unsuspecting witch. "Evans, you got an invitation to the Slughorn party right?"
"...Yeah I did. What are you up to?" She looked over at James who grinned at her, "I'm not taking James if that is what you are asking."
"No I am not over here to ask you to take our poor ole James, I was actually wondering if you would take me." Serius said with a grin, he couldn't see him but Sirius was fairly sure that he heard James' jaw drop to the table.
"What finally got tired of being rejected by the Bulstrode girl, and wanted to move onto the girl your mate likes?" Lily said roughly
"No trust me I would never hit on my mates girl, but you are my only friend that got invited to the Slughorn party. And," he whispered, "I don't trust Malfoy as far as I could throw him. I just want to keep an eye out for the girl, she seems too innocent for that conniving Slitherin."
Lilly tapped her quill on her parchment a few times and looked back over to James, and an evil grin spread across her face when he met her gaze. She placed her hand on Sirius's forearm and smiled at him, in a way that sent a warning chill through Black. "You know Sirius," She said louder, it was weird she never called him by her first name, "I would be thrilled to go with you to Slughorn's party."
Sirius leaned closer to Evans whispering, "Just what are you doing?"
"Getting back at James, and getting the Bulstrode girls' attention for you at the same time." Lily Evans said, gesturing to behind her.
Sirius quickly turned his attention to the girl in the back, unreadable dual-colored eyes narrowed down at him for a moment until they quickly turned back towards her friend.
A mischievous grin grew on Sirius's face. This was going to be interesting.
ok so how did you like it
Please comment! It keeps me going!
Slughorn's party coming up next!
