Ash, Brock and Misty arrived in a city known as Gringy City.
He was holding Cubone in his arms with Pikachu walking alongside him. His current party was Pikachu, Cubone, Butterfree, Vulpix, Vaporeon and Espeon.
Ash wasn't too fond of Gringy City; it was a really polluted place and thick grey smoke was rising in the air.
"I don't like this place." Ash said. "It's filthy and polluted and there's a stench in the air."
"I hate it too." Misty added. "And there are nothing but factories and no people are around."
"This city used to be a livelier place." Brock said. "But they went overboard with the factories and pollution ruined the air and water."
"Come on." Ash said. "Let's find the Pokemon Center. I really don't like standing here and I doubt this place is safe for Pokemon."
Misty and Brock agreed and the gang immediately headed to the Pokemon Center.
It was late when they reached the Pokemon Center, and Nurse Joy was not happy with them for being out so late. Ash, Misty and Brock booked a room and went to sleep.
"For once I'm glad to be inside, rather than outside." Ash said.
"So am I." Misty nodded. "The sights and smells of this place make me feel sick."
"I suggest we leave as soon as the sun comes up." Ash advised.
Brock and Misty couldn't agree more.
Just then all the lights in the Pokemon Center went off.
"What just happened?" Ash asked. "Is this a black out?"
He, Misty and Brock went to see what happened when they saw a worried and upset Nurse Joy. There were some Pokemon in incubators and without the power the Pokemon were in trouble.
"If the power isn't restored soon." Nurse Joy said. "The Pokemon might die."
"Time for us to do something about this." Ash told Misty and Brock.
The gang then left the Pokemon Center and encountered Officer Jenny.
"I've been trying to contact the power plant, but no one is responding."
"I know exactly where it is." She told Ash, Misty and Brock and the gang rushed over to it.
It didn't take them long to find the power plant; it was the biggest building in Gringy City. The power plant had big chimneys with lots of thick smoke coming out.
"This is probably where a majority of the pollution is coming from." Ash said.
Misty noticed a stream by it.
"Ugh, look at that." She said in disgust. "This water is as filthy as the air."
The water looked greenish-blue.
"Come on." Ash said. "Let's head inside."
What they didn't notice was that some sort of purple sludge was living in the stream.
The inside of the power plant was very dark. Ash ignited his fist and used it as a light source.
"Okay, what are we going to do?" Ash asked.
"I suggest." Brock advised. "That we find the main power room. There might be people inside it."
Just as they were about to find the main power room, they walked into what sort of looked like a magnet with a metal body and one eye.
"That's a Pokemon." Ash said.
He looked at the Pokedex.
"Magnemite, the Magnet Pokemon. Uses anti-gravity to stay suspended. Appears without warning and uses Thunder Wave and similar moves.
"Hey." Misty said. "You don't suppose the Magnemite caused the blackout do you?"
"I don't think so." Brock shook his head. "Besides I don't think a single Magnemite could do something like this."
"Hey Magnemite." Ash said. "I don't suppose you know what's going on, do you?"
Magnemite stared at Ash, then suddenly froze and flew off in a hurry.
"Hey what gives?" Ash asked.
Just then Brock smelled something disgusting in the room.
"Hey do you smell that?" Brock asked.
Ash and Misty got a whiff of it and held their noses in disgust. Behind them were a couple of big purple blobs.
"These things must be why Magnemite left in a hurry." Brock said.
"Yuck they stink." Misty complained.
"What are they?" Ash asked.
He checked the Pokedex.
"Grimer, the Sludge Pokemon. Appears in filthy areas. Thrives by sucking up polluted sludge that is pumped out of factories."
Ash was disgusted by the smell of the Grimer, but didn't say anything about it. He wasn't going to make the Grimer mad.
"Grimer smells terrible!" Misty yelled. This enraged the Grimer.
Suddenly a dark purple blob of sludge appeared between the Grimer, looking very angry.
Ash looked at it on the Pokedex.
"Muk, the Sludge Pokemon and the evolved form of Grimer. Thickly covered in a filthy, vile sludge. It is so toxic, even it's footprints contain poison."
Muk ordered the Grimer to charge at the gang.
"You just had to piss them off, Misty." Ash glared at her as they ran away.
They ran into two men around the corner.
"Hey what are you doing here?" One of the men asked.
"Running away from the Grimer!" Misty shouted.
The two men saw the Grimer as well and led the kids into the main power room. Brock then locked the door.
"Why is there a blackout?" Ash asked. "It's causing problems at the Pokemon Center. The Pokemon there will die without the power."
"It's because of the Grimer." One of the men explained. "They've plugged up the water intake and our power generator won't spin without the water."
Suddenly some bangs on the door were heard.
"Oh no." Brock said. "The Grimer are trying to get in."
"You kids are Pokemon trainers right?" One of the men asked. "Use them to fight the Grimer."
"If you do that." The other man said. "The Grimer may run away and the generator may work again."
"Okay let's do it." Ash said.
He sent out Butterfree and Espeon and ordered both to use Psychic as psychic type Pokemon are strong against poison type Pokemon. Then an air vent above them opened and out popped the Magnemite from earlier.
"Are you here to help us?" Ash asked Magnemite.
Magnemite nodded and then more Magnemite and what looked like three Magnemite stuck together.
"Look it's Magnemite's evolved form Magneton."
Ash looked Magneton up.
"Magneton, the Magnet Pokemon and the evolved form of Magnemite. Formed by several Magnemites linked together. They frequently appear when sunspots flare up."
The Magnemite and Magneton fired powerful Thunder Shocks at the Grimer. Both the Grimer in the main power room and the ones blocking the water intake got hit. Then they all left in a hurry. The water went through the generator and the power came back on. The two men were delighted and got to work on the machines at once. Ash, Misty and Brock were delighted too. Then Misty realized Muk was still there. Ash instructed Butterfree and Espeon to hit it with Psybeam. Then Magnemite and Pikachu hit it with Thunder Shock. When Muk was down, Ash caught it with a Poke Ball.
"Magnemite, do you want to come with me too?" Ash asked.
Magnemite agreed and Ash caught it; so he captured two Pokemon in a single night.
The next morning, Ash, Misty and Brock spoke to Officer Jenny and Nurse Joy before they left.
"The Grimers and Muk were in the stream because the water is as filthy as the city." Misty explained.
"This place needs some serious cleaning up." Ash said.
"If you clean up the air and water around here." Brock added. "The city will be as good as new and it may become livelier again."
Officer Jenny and Nurse Joy both promised they would do that and thanked the kids for everything, then bid them farewell.
Meanwhile at Prof. Oak's lab, he had received Ash's Magnemite and Muk. He was happy about Magnemite but wasn't happy with Muk, due to the smell.
"What's the big idea of sending me a Muk? Yuck!"
