Today is the day when the applicants who passed the entrance exam make the trip to Duel Academy. While the staff leaves Domino City by boat, the new students leave by helicopter. Jaden and Jorden say farewell to their parents while Bastion and Syrus wait for them. The twins' mother is crying while hugging them.
The mother and father have the same skin tone, eye color, and brunette hair as the twins. the mother is wearing a red casual floral print dress and white slip-on shoes. The father is wearing a dark green polo shirt, beige khakis, and black sneakers.
-Father: Come on, Georgia, you don't want to suffocate them.
-Georgia: (crying) I know, William. I just can't believe my babies are leaving so soon.
-Jorden: Aw, mom. Don't be like that.
-Jaden: Yeah, We'll call you guys twice a week. We promise.
-William: Will you also promise to stay on top of your schoolwork?
-Twins: You got it, dad.
-William: Alright. We're gonna miss you kids.
-Georgia: Just one more hug before you go.
The Yuki family does one last group hug before the twins the helicopter. As it takes off, the twins wave goodbye to their parents. Several hours later...
-Pilot: Attention new Duel Academy students, if you look out your window, you'll see your new home away from home.
Some of the new students look out the windows to see a big island with a dormant volcano, many forest areas, and in the center, a university building surrounded by 4 pillars.
-Pilot: Now, now, I know you're excited but don't shove. Quite a sight, isn't it? Now, please fasten your seatbelts and set your seats back to an upright position as we make our final descent. Next stop, Academy island.
A few minutes later, the boat carrying the current Duel Academy students parks at the main dock of the school. As the students exit the boat, a female faculty member stands at the edge of the dock. She looks almost identical to Dr. Crowler except she is wearing red lipstick and her blonde hair is tied in a bun. She is wearing a white Duel Academy jacket with red trim over a gray sleeveless blouse, a pearl necklace and matching earrings, a diamond ring on her right hand, a white pencil skirt, and black high heels. As soon as she sees Dr. Crowler exit the boat, she walks over to greet him.
-Woman: (British accent) Vellian, darling. So good to see you.
The woman and Dr. Crowler kiss each other on the face.
-Woman: How were the exams this year?
-Dr. Crowler: As usual, mother, they were tedious, uninspired, and quite dull.
-Mrs. Crowler: Mmhmm. What happened?
-Dr. Crowler: (sigh) I could never get anything past you. I had to step in to duel one of two late applicants.
-Mrs. Crowler: And?
-Dr. Crowler: And I lost! He was making a mockery of my deck!
-Mrs. Crowler: Oh, I'm sure wasn't that bad, dear. Besides, knowing you, you gave the applicant a challenge. The exams have always been a bore.
On the roof of the storage facility, the helicopter carrying the new students land on the helipad. The students the helicopter to get their belongings from the luggage compartment.
-Syrus: Whoa!
-Jaden: Check it out.
-Bastion: Magnificent.
-Jorden: Dudes, look at this place! This is awesome!
-Jaden: I know right? Just think of all the duels we'll have here.
Bastion: Yes, it should be quite excellent.
-Female staff member: Hello everyone. Please follow me to the assembly room. The chancellor will greet you all, and you'll get your designated uniforms and dorm assignments.
The new students follow the staff member to the assembly room. When they arrive at the assembly room, the students line up side by side in front of a big screen. Suddenly, a bald man appears on the screen. He has a tan skin tone and brown eyes. He is wearing a yellow button-up shirt and a brown tie under a burgundy Duel Academy jacket, dark blue khakis, and brown loafers.
-Man: Good morning and welcome my students. I'm Chancellor Sheppard, the headmaster of Duel Academy. And you are the best and brightest duelists in the world. Now, the staff present before you will provide you with your dorm assignments, uniforms, Duel Pilots, and school duel disks. Get settled in, study hard, and of course duel with all your might. Good luck to you all.
Later, Jaden, Jorden, and Syrus hang out on one of the stone decorations in the courtyard while checking their Duel Pilots for their dorm assignments. Jaden and Syrus sit on opposite sides of the stone while Jorden sits on top.
-Jaden: Well, I don't know about you guys, but I'm in Slifer Red.
-Jorden: Hey, me too.
-Syrus: That's cool. Same with me.
-Jaden: Hey Bastion. Are you in Slifer too?
-Bastion: Fraid not. I'm in Ra Yellow.
-Jaden: Oh I get it. That's why we got red jackets.
-Bastion: Please don't tell me you just figured that out?
-Jaden: So what? Did you ever think I'm color blind?
-Bastion: No I haven't. Are you color blind?
-Jaden: (chuckle) No, but I could've been. Anyway, see you around the dorms.
-Bastion: I doubt that. Your dorm is over there.
Bastion points in the direction of the Slifer Red dorm to the trio's confusion.
The trio arrives at the Slifer Red dormitories which look like semi-stable two-story apartment buildings. In between the dorms, there was an outdoor dining area and a duel field.
-Syrus: This isn't a dorm. It's more like an outhouse with a deck.
-Jaden: You kidding? Check out the view. This place is great.
Jaden and Syrus arrive at their dorm room which consists of a small kitchen area, a two-seated desk, and a three-person bunkbed next to a window.
-Jaden: Here's our room, Sy.
-Syrus: It's pretty small.
-Jaden: Hey, you're a small guy. Anyway, I like it. This will be a sweet pad for our first here.
-Syrus: Yeah, pretty weird meeting at the entrance exams, and now we're roommates. Do you think we were somehow connected in some ancient life, Jaden? Like you were an Egyptian pharaoh, and I was the guardian Seto?
-Jaden: No offense, but that's just lame.
-Syrus: Well it could be true.
-Jaden: Forget it. They broke the mold when they made us.
-Syrus: Yeah for different reasons.
-Jaden: We're gonna have to work on that confidence of yours, pal. But first, let's work on the lighting here.
Jaden opens the curtains when suddenly...
-Hey! Those were closed for a reason.
Jaden closes the curtains when he hears a voice from the top bunk.
-Syrus: Sorry.
-Jaden: Yeah, we didn't see you up there.
-Well, can you see me now?
The source of the voice is an angry heavy-set student with a koala-esque face. Jaden and Syrus are scared when they see him emerge from the top bunk.
-Student: Would you stop screaming? Who are you and why in my room?
-Syrus: Sorry, I'm Syrus.
-Jaden: And I'm Jaden. We're your new roommates.
-Student: You're new alright. So I'll tell you how things work around here.
-Jaden: What things?
-Syrus: Like when Parent's Day is?
-Student: Duh, like how the color thing works. That's more important than anything. We got 3 different kinds of students here. The Obelisk Blue students, the Ra Yellow students, and us, the Slifer Red students. Obelisk Blue is the highest-ranked dorm. Most students are there because of grades, and others cause of their connections. Ra Yellow's the second-highest. Mostly younger students with lots of potential. And then there's us. The Red Wonders.
-Syrus: Red Wonders? That doesn't sound so bad.
-Student: As in "I wonder how flunkies like us ever got this far." Sorry, but the Slifer Dorm is the bottom of the barrel. The higher-ranked students look down on us because of it. Oh, I'm Chumley by the way.
While Jaden and Syrus were at the Slifer boy's dorm, Jorden finds her room at the girl's dorm with the door slightly open. She knocks on the door. The door opens and reveals a dark-skinned girl with light brown eyes, and black hair styled in two high ponytails with a bang over her left eye. She is wearing a purple tank top under a red Duel Academy vest, a black pleated skirt with a red belt and a card holster attached, fishnet leggings, two black sheer elbow-length finger-loop gloves with red jewels glued on the loops, and black wedge boots.
-Girl: Can I help you?
-Jorden: Yeah, I think this is my dorm room.
-Girl: Which must make you my roommate.
The girl backs up allowing Jodren to walk into the room.
-Jorden: (chuckle) Yeah, I guess so. I'm Jorden Yuki.
-Girl: Ydella Mags. I remember seeing you at the entrance exams. Those beasts of yours are very interesting. I didn't think a fusion without Polymerization would be possible, but Industrial Illusions never ceases to amaze me. So, what brings you to Duel Academy?
-Jorden: I'm here with my twin brother. We wanted to apply together.
-Ydella: Must be nice to have family here with you.
-Jorden: Yeah. It's gonna be a blast.
After getting settled in their rooms and changing into their uniforms, the twins and Syrus decide to go for a walk around campus. Jorden is wearing an open red Duel Academy jacket over a white short-sleeve shirt, blue jeans, and red shoes. While they were walking, Syrus was sad about Chumley saying that Slifer is the lowest-ranked dorm.
-Jaden: Come on. Don't tell me you're still depressed.
-Syrus: But Chumley said we reds are the worst.
-Jorden: He was probably in a bad mood.
-Jaden: Besides, red's a sweet color. Think about it. Where do you think the term red hot comes from?
-Jorden: From red, baby. Plus the year didn't even start yet. How can we be the worst?
-Syrus: Yeah guys. You're right. Red is for red hot! Scorching, dangerous, hot! I'm like a furnace! Or a big bottle of spicy salsa dip! Right?
Syrus notices the twins running to the main building.
-Syrus: Wait, I'm not a dip? Wait up.
Syrus starts running after them.
-Syrus: Where are you going?
-Jaden: There's some kind of duel action going on.
-Syrus: How do you know?
-Jorden: We just know. Come on.
The trio is now walking down a hallway in search of duel action.
-Jaden: It's over this way. We're sure of it.
-Syrus: How can you be sure of it? Do you guys have a sixth sense for dueling or something?
As they walk up to an open entrance, the twins breathe in deep.
-Jorden: It's in the air, Sy. Can't you just smell it?
-Syrus: Maybe if today's pollen count was lower.
The trio walks into the school's main dueling arena.
-Jorden: Amazing.
-Jaden: Too cool. This is the sweetest dueling arena I've ever seen.
-Syrus: Yeah no kidding. It looks completely state of the art. I bet it would be amazing to duel here.
-Jaden: Well let's find out.
-Syrus: Do you think we're allowed to?
-Jorden: Sure we are. We're students here, and this is our campus, right?
-Wrong.
The trio sees the brown hair and blue hair boys from the entrance exams walk up to them.
-Blue hair: This is the Obelisk Blue campus.
-Brown hair: And you Slifer Red rejects aren't welcome here. Check out the crest.
The trio turns to the crest above the entry tunnel.
-Blue hair: This here is our turf.
-Syrus: Sorry. We were just looking around. But we'll leave now, right guys?
The twins look at each other.
-Jorden: Nah, we don't have to leave.
-Jaden: Not so long as you guys agree to duel me and my sister.
-Blue hair: Hey, you're that kid.
-Brown hair: Chazz, that applicant who beat Dr. Crowler is here.
From the top row of the stands, Chazz sees Jaden, Jorden, and Syrus.
-Jaden: Uh, hi there. I'm Jaden. And he's... Chuzz was it?
Jorden laughs at the comment while Chazz growls.
-Blue hair: His name's Chazz Princeton. He was the top duelist in duel prep school. So you make sure to give in the proper respect.
-Brown hair: Yeah, he's gonna be the next king of games! The best duelist in the world!
-Jorden: Doubt it.
-Jaden: Impossible.
-Brown hair: Say what?
-Jaden: See, he can't be the future king of games 'cause that's exactly what I'm gonna be.
The two Obelisks laugh at that statement.
-Blue hair: A Slifer slacker as king of games? That'll be the day.
-Chazz: Topher, Conklin, can it. Maybe the new kid's right.
-Topher: What do you mean there, Chazz.
-Chazz: He did beat Crowler after all. And that legendary monster of his. I guess it takes some skill to pull that off.
-Jaden: Got that right.
-Chazz: Or was it luck? I say we find out right now.
-Jaden: Bring it.
-This certainly is a motley crew.
Every present sees Alexis entering the arena.
-Syrus: Whoa. Who's she?
-Chazz: Hey Alexis. Have you come to watch me mop the floor with my friend Jaden here? It'll be a short match, but a fun one.
-Alexis: I'm here to remind you that you're late for the Obelisk welcome dinner.
-Chazz: Oh yeah. Come on, guys.
Chazz, Topher, and Conklin exit the arena. Alexis turns to the trio.
-Alexis: Sorry if Chazz rubbed you the wrong way. Not every Obelisk is like that. He's just a jerk, especially with Slifers.
-Jorden: It's no big deal. Those types never bothered me anyway.
-Jaden: Me neither. Besides I could take him down in one turn.
-Jorden: One turn? Yeah right.
-Jaden: Ok, two turns. Maybe two and a half.
Alexis, Jorden, and Syrus laugh at Jaden's claim.
-Jaden: What?
-Alexis: You guys should get going too. The Slifer welcome dinner's about to start.
-Jaden: Right, we'd better go, guys.
Jaden and Jorden run out the entrance with Syrus trailing behind. The twins stop and turn back around to Alexis.
-Jaden: Hey, what was your name again?
-Alexis: Alexis Rhodes. And yours?
-Jaden: I'm Jaden Yuki.
-Jorden: And I'm his sister Jorden. Nice to meet you.
-Jaden: See you around.
The trio now runs to the Slifer dorms.
-Syrus: Aren't you gonna introduce me?
-Alexis: This year's gonna be fun.
The Obelisk boy's and girl's dorms are big mansions. Inside them both, the welcome dinners were underway. They were a lot like fancy extravagant parties where everyone mostly talked about their wealth and what amazing duelists they were.
The Ra dorm was a shared dormitory for boys and girls. Their welcome dinner wasn't as fancy as the Obelisks, but they still had good food.
At the Slifer welcome dinner, the boys and girls were at the outdoor dining area enjoying bento boxes and talking to one another. The twins, Syrus, and Ydella sit together to eat their dinner.
-Jaden: Man, this stuff is great.
-Jorden: I know right?
Suddenly, two adults get the attention of the students. Next to Dr. Crowler's mother is a man with white skin, long jet black hair in a low ponytail, and squinted eyes. He is wearing a white long-sleeve button-up shirt, black khakis, and brown loafers. He is holding a chubby tan tabby cat in his arms.
-Man: Hello students. My name is Professor Lyman Banner. And I am the headmaster of the Slifer boy's Dorm.
-Mrs. Crowler: And I'm Vivian Crowler, the headmistress of the girl's red dorm. I hope you're all enjoying your meals.
The students nod in agreement.
-Banner: Excellent. Now before we go over the dorm rules, we want to inform you of our annual Duel Academy showcase being held tomorrow.
-Mrs. Crowler: That is where the Academy's first-year students get to demonstrate their prowess to the faculty as well as the second and third-year students.
The Slifer students talk to each other about the upcoming showcase.
-Jorden: An event that lets me show how awesome I am? How can I say no to that?
-Ydella: Sounds more like a process to weed out the weak to me.
-Syrus: Oh man. I just know I'm gonna choke.
-Jaden: Come on guys. I bet it'll be fun.
-Jorden: Yeah, and who knows, maybe we'll duel against each other.
Later, Jaden and Syrus go back to their dorm room for the night.
-Jaden: Man, I'm stuffed. I'll tell ya, that Professor Banner sure can cook.
-Syrus: Yeah, and he seems like a pretty nice guy.
Syrus hands Jaden a cup of tea.
-Jaden: Yeah, he's good people.
-Syrus: Hey Chumley, you want some tea?
-Chumley: Did I say I was thirsty.
-Jaden: Hey, he just asked if you wanted some tea. You don't need to snap at him.
-Syrus: That's ok Jaden. I'm used to it.
-Chumley: Duh, tea makes you wet the bed. Not that I do, or ever... whatever! I'm trying to sleep.
Suddenly, Jaden's duel pilot rings. He answers the message and Chazz appears on the screen.
-Chazz: Hey Slifer slacker. Don't think you're off the hook. Tonight at midnight it's on. Oh, and why don't we make it interesting. Whoever wins gets the other guy's best card.
-Jaden: Cool. Guess I'll get to duel in that arena after all.
-Chumley: If that's Chazz you're dueling, all you got is trouble.
Later, Jaden and Syrus head to the duel arena for the match.
-Syrus: I'm not sure if this is a good idea, Jaden.
-Jaden: Good or bad, when someone challenges you to a duel, you gotta step up. There's no choice.
As Syrus and Jaden the arena, they see Chazz, Topher, and Conklin on the duel field.
-Chazz: Well, well, well, he shows.
-Jaden: You better believe it. There's no way I was gonna miss this.
Jaden goes to the duel field to stand across from Chazz.
-Chazz: Time to find out if you beating Dr. Crowler was a fluke or a fact.
-Jaden: Yeah well we're gonna find out something else too. Like which one of us is gonna be the future king of games.
-Chazz: Yeah, yeah. Just make sure you have your best card ready to hand over to me when you lose.
-Jaden: You too. Now, game on.

Jaden: 4000
Chazz: 4000
Chazz goes first and draws his sixth card.
-Chazz: Alright slacker. For my first move, I'll summon Reborn Zombie in defense mode. (LVL 4/ ATK 1000/ DEF 1600)
Chazz summons a zombie monster to the field.
-Chazz: And I'll also place one card facedown.
-Jaden: I Guess that's one way to start a duel, but I'm gonna go a little bigger. Here goes.
Jaden draws his sixth card. He looks at the cards in his hand and notices that Winged Kuriboh is one of them.
-Jaden: Hey good to see you Winged Kuriboh. Maybe I'll use you later. But now I'll play Polymerization to fuse Elemental Heroes Avion and Burstinatrix! And bring out Elemental Hero Flame Wingman in attack mode!
Jaden's number 1 fusion monster is summoned to the field. (LVL 6/ ATK 2100/ DEF 1200)
-Jaden: I told you I'd start big, didn't I?
-Chazz: I was hoping you would.
-Jaden: Why's that?
-Chazz: Because that card I placed facedown was a trap card, slacker. That you set off! Chthonian Polymer, do your stuff!
Chazz activates his trap card.
-Syrus: What's Chthonian Polymer's stuff?
-I had a feeling I'd find you guys here.
Syrus turns around and sees Alexis walking up to the field.
-Syrus: Alexis?
-Alexis: Chthonian Polymer's a nasty trap. It allows you to take control of your opponent's fusion monster by sacrificing one of your monsters.
-Syrus: Oh no. Jaden just summoned a fusion monster.
-Chazz: I sacrifice Reborn Zombie to take control of your wingman.
Reborn Zombie disappears and Flame Wingman appears on Chazz's side with a dark aura glowing around him.
-Syrus: How did Chazz know to play that?
-Chazz: You're so predictable, Jaden. You wouldn't stop talking about Flame Wingman at the entrance exam. So I know you'd use him soon.
-Jaden: Still, since Flame Wingman was a special summon, I can summon another monster during my turn. (thinking) Not that anything in hand is a match for the wingman.
-Chazz: (thinking) Go on Slifer slacker. Play another monster. After all, I haven't forgotten about Flame Wingman's superpower.
-Jaden: Alright, I summon Elemental Hero Clayman in defense mode.
Jaden brings out a big Clay warrior. (LVL 4/ ATK 800/ DEF 2000)
-Jaden: There. All set.
-Chazz: Yeah. Set up to get knocked down! Rise, Chthonian Soldier!
A man wearing dark armor and carrying a large blade appears.(LVL 4/ ATK 1200/ DEF 1400)
-Chazz: And now Flame Wingman! Attack with Skydive Scorcher!
Flame Wingman dives in to destroy Clayman.
-Chazz: And if I remember correctly, thanks to wingman's superpower, you take damage equal to the destroyed monster's attack points.
Flame Wingman blasts Jaden with fire.
Jaden: 4000-3200
Chazz: 4000
-Chazz: But don't think I'm dome yet, slacker. Chthonian Soldier, attack with Windstorm Slash!
Chthonian Soldier attacks Jaden directly and Jaden falls to his knees.
Jaden: 3200-2000
Chazz: 4000
-Chazz: Are you starting to know your place here yet? You may have been someone back home, but at the academy, you're nothing but an amateur. I'll end my turn with a facedown.
Chazz hears muffled sounds coming from Jaden.
-Chazz: Aw, what's wrong, baby? Gonna cry?
Jaden's "crying" turns into laughter as he gets up off his knees.
-Jaden: Man this is too fun!
-Chazz: Fun?
-Jaden: This is just what I came here for. The trash talk, the action. It's all so great! I summon Elemental Hero Sparkman!
A man wearing head-to-toe yellow and blue battle armor appears on the field. (LVL 4/ ATK 1600/ DEF 1400)
-Jaden: Now Sparkman, attack with Static Shockwave!
Sparkman shoots a beam of electricity a Chthonian Soldier to destroy him.
Jaden: 2000
Chazz: 4000-3600
However, the soldier's sword shoots in the air and slashes Jaden.
Jaden: 2000-1600
Chazz: 3600
-Chazz: Still having fun, slacker? When Chthonian Soldier is destroyed, you take the same amount of damage that I took. The only difference is you hardly have any life points to spare. It's just a matter of time before your best card becomes mine, slacker.
-Jaden: This isn't over yet. I throw down a facedown.
-Chazz: Play whatever you want. My next attack will finish you off. And that attack's coming right now! Go Flame Wingman!
-Jaden: Not so fast! That was a trap card I just threw!
Jaden's trap card activates.
-Chazz: A trap?
-Syrus: It's Mirror Gate.
-Alexis: Then Jaden's still in this duel after all. Mirror gate makes two monsters in battle switch sides. So now Flame Wingman is back on Jaden's team.
Sparkman and Flame Wingman now switch to opposite sides of the field.
-Jaden: Aw yeah! Go, Wingman!
In a burst of electricity, Flame Wingman destroys Sparkman.
-Chazz: NO!
Jaden: 1600
Chazz: 3600-3100
-Jaden: And as you said earlier, Wingman's superpower kicks in! You take damage equal to your destroyed monster's attack points.
Wingman sends power flames directly to Chazz.
Jaden: 1600
Chazz: 3100-1500
-Syrus: Alright!
-Alexis: Nice moves, Jaden.
-Chazz: More like lucky moves if you ask me. I play my trap, Chthonian Blast! Now since you destroyed one of my monsters, I get to destroy one of yours. And you take damage equal to half of its attack point.
In a swirl of wind, Flame Wingman is destroyed.
Jaden: 1600-550
Chazz: 1500
-Chazz: Next I activate the trap, Call of the Haunted! It lets me select a monster in my graveyard and bring it back to the field in attack mode. Rise, Chthonian Soldier! But he won't be here for long because I'm sacrificing him to summon Mefist the infernal General!
Chthonian Soldier disappears to the graveyard, and a dark ax-wielding knight riding a demonic horse takes its place. (LVL 5/ ATK 1800/ DEF 1700)
-Jaden: Not bad.
-Chazz: Not bad? You know, slacker, you're something else. Acting all confident, but your lousy monsters won't get you out of this jam.
Suddenly, Jaden hears a familiar cooing sound and sees Winged Kuriboh.
-Jaden: (thinking) I know he's wrong Kuriboh. Because Chazz doesn't know that my monsters and I have a bond.
Jaden draws his next card.
-Jaden: (thinking) Speaking of...
-Hey, Jay!
Everyone turns to the entrance and sees Jorden, Bastion, and Ydella.
-Jaden: Oh, hey guys. You finally came to see me beat Chazz, huh?
-Bastion: We came to stop this duel, Jaden.
-Ydella: Bastion told us that it's against the rules to duel past midnight. And if we're all caught here, we'll get expelled immediately.
-Jorden: And I'm guessing Mister "Next King of Games" there didn't tell you that, did he?
Alexis and Syrus gasp at the revelation.
-Alexis: They're right. I can hear campus security coming.
-Topher: Come on! Let's go!
-Chazz: Well, well, slacker, looks like you lucked out this time.
Chazz hops off the field.
-Jaden: What do you mean? The match isn't over.
-Chazz: Yeah it is. I saw what I needed to see. You're a lame excuse for a duelist and your beating was just a fluke.
-Jaden: But Chazz...
Jorden grabs Jaden by his jacket and yanks him off the field.
-Jorden: There's always next duel, Jaden. Now, let's get outta here.
-Jaden: This stinks. I had him on the ropes.
-Bastion: Follow me. I studied the schematics of the arena. I know a secret passage.
A few minutes later, the twins, Syrus, Alexis, Bastion, and Ydella are outside the main building.
-Syrus: Thanks for showing us the way out, Bastion.
-Bastion: Of course.
-Alexis: You certainly are stubborn, Jaden.
-Jaden: Only about my dueling.
-Ydella: It's too bad you didn't finish your match.
-Jaden: It's cool. I know just how it would've ended anyway.
-Jorden: You were gonna use Monster Reborn to bring Wingman back, right?
-Jaden: How'd you know that?
-Jorden: I've dueled you hundreds of times to know what you'd do next. And that's exactly what's gonna help me beat you if you and I end up dueling in the showcase tomorrow.
-Jaden: Keep dreamin' sis.
-Bastion: Speaking of the showcase, we should all head back to our dorms to prepare. Until then.
