The day after Chazz and Jaden's duel, the Duel Academy showcase is underway. Every Duel Academy student is in the Obelisk duel arena, and many first-year students have shown off their skills. Right now, Syrus is dueling a first-year Obelisk boy. He has fair white skin, light brown eyes, and jet black hair to stick out the front. He is wearing an open Obelisk jacket, a white button-up shirt with a popped-out collar, a silver necklace with a blue jewel, blue fingerless gloves, black pants, and black boots. Right Now, Syrus is down to 600 life points while his opponent has 3100.
-Obelisk student: (American-Italian accent) Sorry, little man. But when you're up against Lorenzo, expect to get a beat down. Ya know what I'm sayin'?
-Syrus: I'll take your word for it.
-Mrs. Crowler: I always love watching the showcase.
-Dr. Crowler: Yes, I agree. And my Obelisks are looking excellent as usual.
-Mrs. Crowler: We'll just see how long that lasts. Won't we, darling?
-Dr. Crowler: Of course, mother dear. I always enjoy our little debates during the showcase.
Meanwhile in the audience...
-Jorden: This is too cool! It's been nothing but nonstop action!
-Jaden: I know. I can't wait to get out there and duel someone.
-Chumley: Yeah, the showcase is always cool.
-Bastion: If only Syrus shared your sentiments.
The duel between Syrus and Lorenzo is over when Syrus' life points decrease to zero. Feeling dejected, Syrus walks back to his seat behind Bastion, Chumley, and the twins.
-Jaden: Hey, cheer up, Sy.
-Jorden: I thought you did great, little dude.
-Syrus: That makes one of us.
-Dr. Crowler: Alright, everyone, settle. It's time to start the next battle.
-Mrs. Crowler: First, We'll have Miss Ydella Mags of Slifer Red.
The Slifer students applaud Ydella.
-Dr. Crowler: And facing her will be Topher Taiyou of Obelisk Blue.
The blue-haired Obelisk student smiles and gets up from his seat.
-Topher: Ha! this will be a walk in the park.
-Jorden: You got this, Ydella.
-Ydella: This should be interesting.
Ydella gets up and grabs her duel disk that she decorated with black diamonds painted on the sides and the tray. Both opponents meet in the middle of the field to shuffle each other's decks. Once they finished, they go to their sides.
-Topher: Get ready to lose, Slifer girl!
Ydella ignores the comment and activates her duel disk.
-Mrs. Crowler: Now, if both duelists are ready.
-Ydella: I am.
-Topher: Always!
-Dr. Crowler: Then let the duel begin!
-Both: DUEL!
Topher: 4000
Ydella: 4000
-Topher: Obviously, the best goes first.
Topher draws his sixth card.
-Topher: I summon Versago the Destroyer in attack mode!
A shadow creature with bandages wrapped around its body and a mask with a crack mark over the left eye appears in front of Topher. (LVL 3/ ATK 1100/ DEF 900)
-Topher: Up next is my Final Flame Spell. Now you'll lose 600 life points in a snap.
A circle of fire appears around Ydella, and flames spiral around her, but she just stands there unfazed.
Topher: 4000
Ydella: 4000-3400
Alexis and Zane watch from the top of the stands.
-Alexis: Wow, she didn't even blink. Reminds me of you, Zane.
-Zane: She must already have a plan to be so calm.
-Topher: I'll end my turn here. Not that it matters, but it's your turn,
Ydella silently draws her next card and looks at the cards in her hand.
-Topher: What's up there? Cat got your tongue? You gotta say something to make this interesting.
-Ydella: Well, since you asked so nicely. I'll bring out this cuddly creature in attack mode.
After she places one card on the tray, a portal opens on the floor and a purple centipede monster crawls out and onto Ydella's shoulder. (LVL 3/ ATK 1000/ DEF 1000)
-Syrus: What is that thing?
-Bastion: Marionette Mite. And I believe I know what Ydella plans to do with it.
A slot opens at the end of Ydella's duel disk.
-Ydella: Next I activate the Zombie World field spell.
Once Ydella places the spell card into the slot, the field around them and the audience turns into a dark, twisted, frightening place. Ydella And Topher now stand on a field of skulls.
-Topher: (scream) This place is freaky!
-Ydella: Well this place isn't exactly for the faint of heart, but that's why I like it. And your monster seems to be fitting in with the scenery quite well.
Topher looks over to Versago and freaks out when he sees its skin rotting.
-Topher: What are you doing to my monster?!
-Ydella: Be patient and you'll find out. Now I activate Marionette Mite's ability. By sending it to the graveyard, I'll be able to seize control of a zombie-type on your field.
-Topher: Well the joke's on you. I don't have any zombies on my field.
-Ydella: The joke is actually on you. Because thanks to Zombie World's effect, every monster present on the field is classified as a zombie.
Topher gasps at the revelation as Ydella sends her mite to the grave. Marionette Mite starts glowing purple and crawls onto Ydella's hand.
-Ydella: I'm surprised someone of your dueling status didn't know that. Though if you did...
She holds up her glowing monster in her hand.
-Ydella: You would've seen this coming.
The glowing mite jumps from Ydella's hand and onto Versago's face. Versago starts glowing and floats to Ydella's side.
-Ydella: Next I activate Polymerization and fuse Versago with Red-Eyes Black Dragon in my hand.
-Topher: Red-Eyes?
-Chazz: What?
-Alexis: No way.
Versago and Red-Eyes fly into a spiraling vortex and black lightning strikes behind Ydella Who has a wicked smile on her face.
-Ydella: Awaken, Archfiend Black Skull Dragon!
A big red and black dragon with razor-sharp claws appears behind Ydella with a mighty roar. (LVL 9/ ATK 3200/ DEF 2500)
-Mrs. Crowler: My goodness!
-Dr. Crowler: That behemoth is terrifying!
-Ydella: And finally, Monster Reborn.
Topher laughs nervously.
-Topher: Big deal. Go ahead bring back Versago. It won't make a difference.
-Ydella: Who said I was gonna bring back Versago?
A pillar of fire shoots up behind Ydella.
-Ydella: Red-Eyes Black Dragon, come to life!
The audience gasps as one of the most famous duel monsters appears on the field. (LVL 7/ ATK 2400/ DEF 2000)
-Bastion: Great Scott!
-Syrus: Two dragons?!
-Chumley: So licious!
-Jaden and Jorden: This is too cool!
-Conklin: No way!
-Chazz: How can a Slifer slacker have a monster like that?
-Topher: (trembling) No big deal.
-Ydella: Says the duelist with no monsters to hide behind. And it only gets worse for you. Because Archfiend Black Skull Dragon's effect doesn't allow you to use any spells, traps, or monster effects until after the damage has been dealt. And judging by fear in your eyes, you don't have any of the three to active, do you?
Topher remains silent and trembling.
-Ydella: I thought not. End this, my mighty beasts! Inferno Darkness Blast!
The two dragons combine their blasts to attack Topher. After the attack hits, Topher is seen lying on his back.
Topher: 4000-0
Ydella: 3400
As the field spell and dragons disappear, the audience is amazed by what they just witnessed.
-Syrus: I don't believe it. Ydella just beat an Obelisk student.
-Bastion: In one turn. That is quite impressive.
Ydella walks up to the fallen Obelisk student.
-Ydella: And you're supposed to be at the top of the duel chain here? How disappointing.
Ydella walks back to her seat.
-Mrs. Crowler: (clears her throat) Alright. On to our next match. Next up is Jorden Yuki from Slifer Red.
The Slifers now cheer for Jorden.
-Jorden: Don't know if I'll be able to top a one-turn win.
-Dr. Crowler: And from Obelisk Blue, Torrey Conway!
Lorenzo turns to the boy next to him. He has white fair skin, shoulder-length brown hair, and silver frame glasses under his eyes.
-Lorenzo: Good luck, buddy. Try not to up-stage me, would ya?
-Torrey: (chuckle) Wouldn't dream of it, Lorenzo.
Torrey walks to the field.
-Jaden: Good luck out there, sis.
-Jorden: Won't need it, bro, but thanks.
Jorden hops over the barricade and walks onto the field. The two duelists approach each other and shuffle each other's decks.
-Dr. Crowler: Blind optimism will certainly be the girl's downfall.
-Mrs. Crowler: Oh, come now, Vellian. It's her first duel in the academy. Of course, she's excited.
-Dr. Crowler: Any amateur would be excited about their first duel.
-Mrs. Crowler: I remember how thrilled you were. You were so happy, you could barely hold the cards in your hand.
Dr. Crowler blushes.
-Dr. Crowler: Mother, please!
Chazz group...
-Chazz: That was a major embarrassment, Topher. You better hope this other Slifer girl is lamer than your loss.
Torrey and Jorden are finished shuffling the decks and they go to their sides of the field and activate their duel disks.
-Torrey: Ready for this, Jorden?
-Jorden: Ready when you are, blue boy.
-Mrs. Crowler: If both duelists are ready, let the duel commence!
-Both: BRING IT!
Jorden: 4000
Torrey: 4000
-Jorden: Ladies first.
Jorden draws.
-Jorden: And I'll start with Gladiator Beast Laquari in attack mode.
Jorden summons a tiger wearing red battle armor with a flaming ring of 6 swords behind it. (LVL 4/ ATK 1800/ DEF 400)
-Jorden: Next, I'll hook him up with the Gladiator Beast's Battle Manica.
A metal gauntlet appears on Laquari's right arm.
-Jorden: Now I'll place 3 face downs and call it a turn.
-Torrey: Not a bad setup. Let's see if I can top that.
Torrey Draws.
-Torrey: First, I summon Predaplant Ophrys Scorpio in attack mode.
Torrey summons a scorpion-like plant creature. (LVL 3/ ATK 1200/ DEF 800)
-Jorden: Predaplant?
-Torrey: Think of them as the more dangerous plant life you'd find on a deserted island. Now, since Ophrys Scorpio was summoned, I can send a card from my hand to the graveyard and bring out another Predaplant from my deck.
Torrey sends a monster card to his graveyard.
-Torrey: So I'll bring out Predaplant Flytrap.
Now a small flytrap grows onto the field. (LVL 2/ ATK 400/ DEF 800)
-Torrey: Now I'll use Flytrap's ability to give your monster a Predator Counter.
The flytrap spits out a clump of moss onto Laquari's left arm.
-Torrey: As long as that's attached to Laquari, his level drops down to one.

-Ydella: How would decreasing a monster's level benefit Torrey?
-Bastion: Most of the Predaplant cards work in tandem with the Predator Counters. Torrey must have a trick or two up his sleeve.
-Torrey: Now I'll place 2 face downs and end my turn.
-Jorden: So far, this is pretty interesting.
She draws her next card.
-Jorden: I summon Gladiator Beast Attorix.
A caracal cat wearing silver and purple battle armor appears. (LVL 4/ ATK 800/ DEF 2000)
-Jorden: Now I'll mix it up with some fusion action!
-Torrey: What? Without Polymerization?
-Jorden: Don't need it! I'll fuse Attorix and Laquari to call out Gladiator Beast Essedarii!
Gladiator Beast Essedarii with a mighty roar. (LVL 5/ ATK 2500/ DEF 1400)
-Jorden: That's not all. Since the Battle Manica was still attached to Laquari when I shuffled him in my deck, I can take it from my graveyard and put it in my hand. Then I'll pass it on to Essedarii.
The Battle Manica appears on Essedarii's right arm.
-Jorden: Let's see if your salad bar can handle this. Essedarii, take out Predaplant Ophrys Scorpio!
Essedarii jumps from his chariot and destroys Ophrys Scorpio with his club.

-Torrey: I activate my Sinister Seeds trap. When I take damage from one of my monsters being destroyed, I can summon a Sinister Seed Token for every 500 life points I lost. And with 1300 points down the drain, I bring out 2 seeds.

-Jorden: I end my turn.
Torrey draws his next card.
-Torrey: I'll use flytrap's ability again and place a Predator Counter on Essedarii.
Flytrap spits a Predator Counter onto Essedarii's shield. G.B.E (LVL 5-1)
-Torrey: Now, since you have a monster with a Predator Counter, I can summon this monster from my hand. So say hello to Predaplant Heliamphorhynchus in defense mode!
A green pterodactyl plant hybrid emerges from a portal in the floor. (LVL 8/ ATK 1200/ 2400)
-Torrey: I end my turn.
Jorden draws her next card.
-Jorden: Alright, I summon Gladiator Beast Darius.
Jorden summons a muscular horse wearing orange battle armor and carrying a metal electrified whip. (LVL 4/ ATK 1700/ DEF 300)
-Jorden: Now attack that flytrap!
Jorden: 4000
Torrey: 2700-1400
-Torrey: Nice move, Jorden.
-Jorden: It gets even better. Since Darius attacked, I can shuffle him in my deck and switch him with another monster from it.
-Torrey: What does that mean?
-Jorden: It means that Darius tags out, and Gladiator Beast Bestiari tags in!
Darius is replaced with a green bird in dark green red-crowned amazon bird battle armor. (LVL 4/ ATK 1500/ DEF 800)
-Alexis: So she can replace her monsters with other ones if they attack?
-Zane: Or if they're the ones being attacked. Almost all of the Gladiator Beasts work that way.
-Jorden: Now that Bestiari was summoned by a Gladiator Beast's effect, I can get rid of one spell or trap on your side.
Bestiari destroys Torrey's facedown card with a tornado.
-Jorden: Next, I activate Gladiator Lash. Since Bestiari was special summoned, you have to send one of your cards to the grave.
Torrey sends one card to his graveyard.
-Jorden: I end my turn.
-Mrs. Crowler: How intriguing. Jorden seems to be able to put a stop to Torrey's strategy before he gets to use it.
-Dr. Crowler: I will admit. It is clever.
-Torrey: I draw! You may not need Polymerization, but it does come in handy. I fuse one of my seed tokens with Heliamphorynchus.
The seed token and Heliamphorynchus disappear into a vortex in the floor.
-Torrey: I give you Predaplant Chimerafflesia!
A giant rafflesia flow with two venus flytraps grows out of the ground. (LVL 7/ ATK 2500/ DEF 2000)
-Torrey: Now attack Gladiator Beast Essedarii!
-Ydella: He does know that they'll both be destroyed, right?
-Torrey: Now with Chimerafflesia's effect, Essedarii loses 1000 attack points when it battles, while Chimerafflesia gains 1000 attack points.

-Jorden: I summon Gladiator Beast Lanista!
Jorden summons a muscular eagle wearing dark green battle armor and carrying a bronze spear. (LVL 4/ ATK 1800/ DEF 1200)
-Jorden: Now I'm fusing Lanista with Bestiari to make the greatest feathered fighter! Make way for the scourge of the skies, Gladiator Beast Gyzarus!
As Lanista and Bestiari disappear, a bigger red-drowned amazon flies in with a mighty squawk. (LVL 6/ ATK 2400/ DEF 1500)
-Jorden: And when Gyzarus is special summoned, you can say goodbye to 2 cards on your field. Care to guess which ones?
Gyzarus creates a tornado that destroys Chimerafflesia and the Sinister Seed Token.
-Torrey: Oh no!
-Jorden: It's been fun, Torrey. Gyzarus, time to end the show! Attack with Wind Slash!
Gyzarus' wings glow and he unleashes an x-shaped blast that hits Torrey dead on.

-Torrey: Gotta admit, Jorden, you're good. I'm surprised someone with your skills is in Slifer Red.

The two duelists bump fists and return to their seats as the Slifers continue to cheer for Jorden.
-Chazz: Those Slifer girls just got lucky.
-Chancellor: Alright students, we've reached the final duel of the showcase. And our final participants are Jade Knightly of Ra Yellow against Jaden Yuki of Slifer Red.
-Jaden: Nice, they made me the main event.
-Jorden: Whatever. Just don't lose, 'kay?
-Jaden: No problem.
Jaden goes to the middle of the field to meet Jade. Jade has short blond hair, fair skin, and green eyes. He is wearing a Ra Yellow uniform and a jade necklace and is carrying a duel disk with a sword-shaped tray.
-Jade: Jaden Yuki. Wonderful to meet you.
-Jaden: You too, Jade. Hope you're ready to get your game on.
-Jade: A warrior, such as I, is always ready.
-Chancellor Sheppard: Without Any delay, let the final match of this year's showcase begin!
-Both: LET'S DUEL!

-Jade: I shall start us off. I draw! Just my luck. I activate the spell, Gem-Knight Fusion. And I'll use it to fuse Gem-Knight Garnet and Gem-Knight Emerald.

-Jade: Now to arms, Gem-Knight Citrine!
Jade summons a knight wearing brown armor with burning hands and carrying a burning sword. (LVL 7/ ATK 2200/ DEF 1950)
-Mrs. Crowler: Gem-Knights? Those are my favorites.
-Jade: Then I'll place one card facedown. That will do for now.
-Jaden: Alright. My turn.
Jaden draws his sixth card.
-Jaden: I summon Elemental Hero Blazeman in attack mode!
Jaden summons his other fire hero. (LVL 4/ ATK 1200/ DEF 1800)
-Jaden: And when Blazeman is summoned, I can add Polymerization to hand.
Jaden takes out the Polymerization card from his deck.
-Jaden: Now I'll use it to fuse Blazeman and Burstinatrix to form Elemental Hero Nova Master!

-Jaden: Now attack Gem-Knight Citrine.
Nova Master destroys Citrine with multiple fireballs.

Jaden: Thanks to Nova Master's ability, I get an extra card from my deck when he destroys a monster.

Jade summons a bronze and white-stripe armored knight carrying a spiked wrecking ball. (LVL 4/ ATK 1800/ DEF 900)
-Jade: Now attack Nova Master!
-Jaden: Are you crazy, Jade? Your knight's gonna get pummeled.
-Jade: Perhaps, if I don't invoke the power of my Gem-Merchant! Once a normal Earth attribute monster of mine attacks, I send Gem-Merchant from my hand to the grave, and Gem-Knight Sardonyx is gifted with 1000 extra attack and defense points in exchange.

-Jaden: Next, I'll give him his signature weapon. The Spark Blaster.
A pink blaster appears in Sparkman's hand with wires plugging into his forearm.
-Jaden: Now, Sparkman can only use the blaster 3 times, but when he uses it, he can switch the battle mode of one of your monsters. Sardonyx, time to take a knee.
Sparkman blasts Sardonyx causing him to kneel.
-Jaden: You know what to do, Sparkman. Attack Gem-Knight Sardonyx with Static Shockwave!
Sparkman uses the blaster to shoot a big ball of electricity at Sardonyx to make him disappear.
-Jade: His defeat will not be in vain. I play the trap, Brilliant Spark. When a Gem-Knight falls in battle, you take damage equal to its original attack points. In this case, you lose 1800 life points.
The spirit of Sardonyx swings his wrecking ball at Jaden, and he blocks the attack with his duel disk.
Jade: 3600
Jaden: 3800-2000
-Jaden: Nice shot. I'll end my turn.
-Jade: Thank you very much.
Jade draws.
-Jade: Jaden, I forgot to mention that Brilliant Spark has a second effect. When it's in the graveyard, I can send a Gem-Knight card to the graveyard to place Brilliant Spark back in my hand. And the only Gem-Knight card in my hand is Gem-Knight Obsidian.
Jade sends Gem-Knight Obsidian to the grave and puts Brilliant Spark in his hand.
-Jade: And now Obsidian's effect activities. When he's sent to the graveyard, I have the power to resurrect a level 4 or below normal monster. This means Gem-Knight Sardonyx makes a come-back.
Jade summons Gem-knight Sardonyx from the graveyard.
-Jaden: That's a nice trick, Jade.
-Jade: Well for my next trick, I activate the Double Summon spell. So Sardonyx gets much more powerful.
A white aura shines around Sardonyx.
-Syrus: But Sardonyx is already on the field. Jade can't do that.
-Ydella: Yes he can. Most of the Gem-Knights are known as Gemini monsters. That means that they can be summoned a second time to activate their effects.
-Jade: Now attack Sparkman!
Sardonyx swings his wrecking ball at Sparkman's chest.

Jade: With Sardonyx's Gemini effect, I can add a Gem-Knight card to my hand when he destroys a monster.
Jade takes a card from his deck and puts it in his hand.
-Jade: I place one card facedown and end my end.
-Mrs. Crowler: I'm very impressed with these boys. Their dueling skills are definitely worth watching.
-Dr. Crowler: I suppose mother, but in the end, only the best shall remain.
-Jaden: My draw! I activate my spell, E-Emergency Call to add an Elemental Hero to my hand.
Jaden takes a monster card from his deck.
-Jaden: Now I'll use my second Polymerization spell to Element Heroes Heat and Lady Heat to form Elemental Hero Inferno!

-Jaden: Now Inferno, attack Sardonyx!
Inferno Sardonyx to dust with his fire. However, Jade smiles as he activates Brilliant Spark.

-Jade: I'm sure you remember the effect of Brilliant Spark, Jaden. And with 1800 points left to your name, this duel is over!
The spirit of Sardonyx swings his wrecking ball near Jaden's feet creating a smoke cloud. The audience is on the edge of their seats as the smoke dissolves showing Jaden with a smile on his face.

-Jade: You still have life points?! How can this be?!
-Jaden: It can be because of my facedown.
Jaden shows his trap card.
-Jaden: Thanks to Elemental Recharge, I gain 1000 life points for every hero I've got on my field. And because of Inferno, I gained just enough to keep me going. I'll end my turn here. You're up, Jade.
-Jorden: Once again, Jaden saves himself.
-Syrus: Yeah! Way to play!
-Chumley: Your brother's pretty licious, Jorden.
-Jorden: Yeah, well, I always said that he gets his skills from me.
Jade silently draws his next card.
-Jade: Very clever, Jaden, but cleverness can only get you so far. I summon Gem-Knight Alexandrite!
Jade summons a knight in silver armor with different jewels embedded in it. (LVL 4/ ATK 1800/ DEF 1200)
-Jade: With Alexandrite's power, I can summon another knight from my deck by sending him to the graveyard. So I release Alexandrite to call Gem-Knight Crystal to battle.

-Jade: Go, my noble knight! Attack Elemental Hero Inferno with Crystal Barrage!
Gem-Knight Crystal shoots crystal shards from his at Inferno to destroy him.

Jaden places his fingers on the top card and closes his eyes.

Jaden draws what could be his last card. He then opens his eyes and sees the very card he was hoping for.
-Jaden: I activate Fusion Recovery! Now I can add Polymerization and any monster I used as fusion material to my hand.
Jaden brings Polymerization and Elemental Hero Burstinatrix to his hand.
-Jaden: Next up is my trap, Hero Blast. This lets me take a normal monster from my graveyard and add it to my hand. And if your monster has fewer attack points than the monster I'm choosing, it gets destroyed.
Jaden shows the monster he chose.
-Jaden: I chose Sparkman, so your monster's safe. But I'm not don't yet. Now I use Polymerization to fuse Sparkman and Burstinatrix in my hand.
Sparkman and Burstinatrix disappear into a portal, and a red and gold armor hero appears. (LVL 7/ ATK 2500/ DEF 1200)
-Jaden: Say hello to Elemental Hero Sunrise! When he's special summoned, I can add the spell, Miracle Fusion to my hand. Now I'll use Miracle Fusion to banish monsters from my graveyard to fusion summon. So I banish Blazeman, Heat, and Lady Heat to fusion summon Elemental Hero Core!
A red and silver monster appears in front of Jaden in a flash of light. (LVL 9/ ATK 2700/ DEF 2200)
-Jaden: Now that's Core's on the field, Sunrise gains 200 attack points since Core is a different attribute than him.

-Jaden: Now I'll have Core attack.
Elemental Hero Core flies towards Jade and Gem-Knight Crystal.
-Jaden: And here's the best part, thanks to Sunrise's other superpower, when another hero on the field battles, one of your cards goes bye-bye. And right now, the only card I'm looking at is Gem-Knight Crystal.
-Jade: What?!
Sunrise shoots a stream of light at Gem-Knight Crystal to destroy him.
-Jaden: Attack Jade directly, Core! Electromagnetic Induction!
Core shoots bolts of lightning at Jade, and he raises his arms in front of his face to block them.
Jade: 3100-400
Jaden: 850
-Jaden: Your turn, Sunrise! Time to end this!
Sunrise conjures a giant ball of sunlight and threw it directly at Jade.
Jade: 400-0
Jaden: 850
The audience applauds as the monsters vanish. Jaden gives Jade a two-finger salute.
-Jaden: And that's game.
-Jade: Yes. And a great game it was. You are quite the duelist, Jaden.
Jade and Jaden shake hands.
-Jaden: Back at you, Jade.
-Jade: And if you're up to it, I'll look forward to a rematch.
-Jaden: You bet.
-Chancellor: Well, I think I speak for everyone when I say this year's showcase was without a doubt exceptional. Now students, get your rest because classes start tomorrow.
