Heading for the elevator at Jabot, Summer stopped walking when she saw the light on in Kyle's office. Looking through the window, she saw him sitting behind his desk. Summer approached the office door and lightly knocked.
From the other side, she heard Kyle say, "Come in."
Kyle looked up from his work, when the door opened. His heart skipped a beat when he saw her. "Summer," Kyle said.
"What are you still doing here?" Summer said, "It's time to go home."
"I had some things to work on," Kyle said, "I thought you left already."
"I was just heading out," Summer said, "Do you want to walk with me?"
"I can't," Kyle said, "I really should get this done."
Summer sighed and shut the door. "What are you doing?" Kyle said.
"I hate this," Summer said, "Now there's tension between us."
"I know," Kyle said, "I don't like it either."
"Then we need to talk about what happened," Summer said.
"I thought you didn't want to," Kyle said.
"If you have feelings for me, we all have a real problem," Summer said.
"I can't just shut off how I feel," Kyle said, "At the same time, I apologize for crossing that line with you."
"I appreciate you saying that," Summer said, "I'm confused. You say you love your wife, yet you profess feelings for me."
"I love you both," Kyle said, standing up, and walking around the other side of the desk, "But it's different with each of you."
"You can't have it both ways," Summer said, "You can't tell one of us you love them, while harboring feelings for another."
"That's not what I'm doing," Kyle said, "It's not like you and I are having an affair."
"It sounds like that's what you want," Summer said, "Do you really expect me to agree to something like that? Lying to my husband and you to your wife."
"That's not at all what I want," Kyle said.
"Then what do you want?" Summer said.
"The truth is, I don't know," Kyle said, "I like being with you and look forward to the time we spend together. At the same time, I couldn't bear to lose my wife. She means so much to me." Kyle sat on the couch with a heavy sigh.
Sitting next to him, Summer said, "Something must be missing in your marriage, if you're turning to me."
"It's not my marriage that's missing something, it's my life," Kyle said.
"How long have you felt so conflicted?" Summer said.
"Most of this year," Kyle said, "When I'm with my wife, I think I've got everything I want. Then the next time I'm with you, all my feelings switch over again."
"Have you mentioned this to your wife?" Summer said.
"I can't do it," Kyle said, "I don't want to hurt anyone."
"It sounds to me like you are the one who is hurting," Summer said, "Is there anything else going on?"
"It's just…" Kyle started, "I feel like I'm losing you."
"Why would you say that?" Summer soothed. A look of realization came over her face and nodding, she said, "I get it now. All those things you said before, you were just trying to hold on."
"What do you mean?" Kyle said.
"You and I have shared a lot over the years," Summer said, "When I've been happy you celebrated with me, when I was sad you consoled me. We have gone through every life change together, but now I'm getting married. That's a big part of my life I can't share with you. Of course you can be a part of the ceremony and I can talk to you about it. You're afraid that I'm going to share all those moments with Fen, that I used to share with you."
Nodding Kyle said, "There's no room for me anymore."
Taking his hand, Summer said, "How could you ever think that I would push you aside and forget about you? You are my best friend, Kyle and that's forever."
"It's a nice sentiment," Kyle said, "But it's been happening for months now. You move in with Fen, you get a new job away from me. The two of you could move and I'd never see you again."
"Listen to me," Summer said, "I am always going to be here for you. No matter what. Not my marriage, not any distance is going to stop us from being the best of friends. I will always have a place in my heart, just for you."
"Promise?" Kyle said.
"I promise," Summer said, "I'm not going anywhere." She kissed his cheek, "Feel better?" she said, "Are we good?"
"Besties for life," Kyle smiled.
"I guess we should get going," Summer said, standing up.
Also getting to his feet, Kyle said, "Wait, you never said why you came by earlier, in the first place."
"JCV is planning a big promotion and I wanted to bounce some ideas off you," Summer said, "We can do it another time."
"No time like the present," Kyle said.
"Right now?" Summer said.
"I'd love to hear what you have come up with," Kyle said.
"Okay," Summer smiled at him.
Rachel hummed to herself as she placed two gold candles, nestled in holders on the table. She had set out dinnerware for two, smiling as she surveyed the layout. Chloe had made good on her offer to take the baby for one night. Darting into the kitchen she checked on food cooking in the oven and other selections brewing on top. Preparing all Kyle's favorites, Rachel let out a small exclamation of triumph, at the success of the planned dishes. She placed a dessert in the fridge to set, before touching up her makeup in a nearby mirror.
Rachel's hair was pulled back and she was wearing a necklace, with matching earrings that Kyle had given her.
Sighing happily, Rachel said, "This is going to be such a wonderful night. Kyle, I can't wait until you get home."
Laughter filled Kyle's office as he and Summer, talked about work, and the approaching summer season. A box of a half-eaten pizza sat on the table, accompanied by two empty wine glasses. Summer talked about plans for her wedding, and Kyle shared humorous stories about his daughter.
"More pizza?" Kyle said.
"No, I couldn't eat another bite," Summer said.
"Wine?" Kyle said.
"I don't think I need anymore of that either," Summer said.
"What do we do with the leftovers?" Kyle said.
"Put it in the staff room fridge," Summer said, "Someone will take it."
"Such good ideas," Kyle said.
Summer smiled and said, "This was fun. I'm glad we cleared everything up between us."
"Me too," Kyle said.
"Let's make a pact," Summer said.
"To do what?" Kyle said.
"Let's promise that no matter what, we will make time to spend together, just the two of us," Summer said.
"Regular wine and pizza nights?" Kyle said.
"I think we can come up with something better than that," Summer said.
"Whatever we do, I am sure it will be entertaining," Kyle smiled.
"And special," Summer said.
"Of course that too…" Kyle trailed off losing his smile, "Oh, no," he sighed.
"What's wrong?" Summer said.
Checking his watch, Kyle said, "It's late."
"I didn't realize the time," Summer said.
"Rachel hinted she was planning something special tonight, and now I've probably messed it up," Kyle said, "That settles it, she is going to kill me."
"Tell her you had to work late," Summer said, "You are the CEO, it does happen. Maybe you can still salvage some of the night."
"I guess I will find out," Kyle said.
Kyle unlocked his front door, to find the house in darkness. He flipped on the lights and his heart ached at the sight that greeted him. Dinnerware was still set for a meal, while blown out candles sat in the middle. Kyle located a note pad on the table, reading over the printed words, he softly said, "Diana is spending the night and Kevin and Chloe's. Dinner is in the fridge if you are hungry." Rachel had drawn a heart and her initial – R.
"Oh, baby I'm sorry," Kyle whispered to himself.
Checking the fridge, Kyle noticed all his favorite dishes had been prepared, including a dessert Kyle had raved over before.
Kyle crept into the bedroom, to find Rachel lying in bed, with her back to him. He caught sight of her earrings and necklace on the dresser, next to a chair adorned with navy satin lingerie. Kyle realized Rachel had not only planned a special night, but it was all for him.
Disrobing down to his underwear, he slipped into bed beside her. Catching the scent of Rachel's perfume, that he liked, he said, "Rachel, it's me. I'm really sorry, I'm so late."
"Mmm…" was Rachel's response.
"I also apologize I missed our evening together," Kyle said, "Everything looks really good, I wish I had been here."
"We will talk about it in the morning," Rachel muttered.
"Are you mad at me?" Kyle said. Rachel was silent. Nodding to himself, Kyle whispered, "I guess so."
Rachel woke early the next morning, to find she was alone in bed. Remembering Diana was not at home, she sauntered down to the kitchen. "Kyle?" she called. Not getting a response she sighed, "Good morning to you too." She began to walk back to the bedroom, when the sound of the front door opening, made her turn back around.
"You're up," Kyle said, his hands full of take out.
"Where did you go?" Rachel said.
"Breakfast," Kyle said, holding up a paper bag, "Fresh baked croissants." Carefully putting a cardboard holder of coffees on the counter he continued, "And of course hot coffee. I got yours the way you like it."
"Thank you," Rachel said, "I'm surprised you're up, since you got home so late last night."
"And I apologize for that," Kyle said. Handing her a small vase containing a single rose he said, "Peace offering?"
Taking it from him, Rachel said, "Maybe."
"Are you still mad at me?" Kyle said, "Because I really am sorry. It looks like you went to so much trouble and I wasn't even here."
"I'm sure you had to work late," Rachel said.
"I did," Kyle said.
"You could have called," Rachel said.
"You're right," Kyle said, "But things just got crazy last night and I completely lost track of time."
"What were you working on so late?" Rachel said, "Usually if you're that busy you bring your work home."
"There's a lot going on," Kyle said, "It was more productive to stay."
"You must be hungry since you missed dinner," Rachel said.
"I'm fine, we ordered pizza at the office," Kyle said.
"We?" Rachel said, "Who were you working with?"
Kyle paused before he said, "I was with Summer."
"Sum…" Rachel started, "You missed our special night, because you were having pizza with Summer?"
"She was working on a promotion for JCV and wanted my input," Kyle said.
"So of course you had to stay," Rachel said, "I'm sure she begged and pleaded for your help."
"I offered," Kyle said.
"Because you would rather spend time with Summer, than with me," Rachel said.
"Where did that come from?" Kyle said.
"That's the way it is," Rachel said, "You spend so much time with her at the office. When you do come home you talk about her and how wonderful she is. Even when I brought the baby to visit you yesterday. I left for a few minutes and come back to find Summer coddling our baby. You both seemed to be having a great time together."
"You know my job requires me to work long hours," Kyle said, "I know you planned something special and you're disappointed but don't take it out on Summer."
"You're doing it right now, you are still talking about her," Rachel said.
"She's not just my co-worker, she's a good friend," Kyle said.
"I'm your wife!" Rachel said, "Doesn't that count for anything?"
"Of course you count," Kyle said, "I don't know why you're making such huge deal out of one night."
"Because it's not just one night," Rachel said, "Summer wants you Kyle. I think she's still in love with you."
"You're making something out of nothing," Kyle said.
"And you're defending her," Rachel said, "I don't know, maybe you…"
"Go on," Kyle said, "Maybe I what?"
"You have feelings for her too," Rachel said.
"Is that what you think of me?" Kyle said, "That I would betray you that way?"
"You can't tell me, you were working all of last night," Rachel said, "You even took time out to order pizza."
"Okay, so we socialized a little bit," Kyle said.
"What did you talk about?" Rachel said.
"The weather," Kyle said, "Her wedding, stories about the baby. We had a conversation like friends tend to do."
"Is that all you did?" Rachel said "Just talk?"
"What are you implying?" Kyle said.
"I'm not implying anything," Rachel said, "Just asking a question."
"Sounds more like an accusation," Kyle said.
"Why are you hesitant to answer me?" Rachel said, "Did something else happen?"
"Listen Rachel…" Kyle started.
"Kyle, what did you do?" Rachel said.
"I kissed her," Kyle said, "A real kiss."
Rachel stared at Kyle in disbelief.
Summer sat lost in her thoughts, on the patio of the coffeehouse, when a voice startled you. "Are you a million miles away?"
Summer looked up to see her mother. "Mom, I didn't see you there."
"I know," Phyllis said, "Is this seat reserved for anyone?" She gestured to an empty chair.
"Please…" Summer said, gesturing to it.
"I thought you might be waiting for a special someone," Phyllis said.
"And here you are," Summer said.
Smiling Phyllis said, "That was sweet. I was referring to your handsome husband to be."
"No, I am here by myself," Summer said.
"Has something happened?" Phyllis panicked, "Is something wrong?"
"Mom, I am just taking a break, having a coffee," Summer said, "Don't read too much into it."
"So, everything is okay?" Phyllis said.
"Yes," Summer said, "Fen is wonderful. I am wonderful."
"It sounds wonderful," Phyllis said, "Are you getting nervous?"
"As a matter of fact, I am," Summer said, "I am excited about getting married, but my stomach is freaking out."
"Butterflies?" Phyllis said.
"Major," Summer said, "And the wedding is still a few weeks away. Why am I putting myself through this?"
"Because you're in love," Phyllis said.
"Oh yeah," Summer mused, "That must be it."
"Speaking of love and weddings," Phyllis said, "Have you thought of who you might like to stand up for you? Maybe someone who is sitting across from you?"
"Oh, actually I am going to ask someone else," Summer said.
"I see," Phyllis said, "Of course you're going to ask a friend. Who did you have in mind?" Not letting Summer answer Phyllis said, "I know, it must be Faith. She will look beautiful in a bridesmaid dress."
"It's not Faith," Summer said, "It's…Rachel."
"As in Mrs. Abbott?" Phyllis said.
"That's the one," Summer said.
"You two are friends?" Phyllis said.
"Hardly," Summer said.
"Then why ask her?" Phyllis said.
"Because Fen is friends with Rachel," Summer said, "So I did it for him. Fen is asking Kyle to be his best man, because of my friendship with Kyle."
"It sounds complicated," Phyllis said.
"Well, I haven't asked her yet," Summer said, "Stay tuned, I might need your services yet."
"You did what?" Rachel said, astounded.
"It was just one kiss," Kyle protested.
"That's one too many!" Rachel said.
"I know, I shouldn't have," Kyle said.
"But you couldn't help yourself," Rachel said.
"It wasn't like that," Kyle said.
"Do you have feelings for her?" Rachel said.
"No," Kyle said, "I thought I did."
"Which is your way of saying yes you do," Rachel said.
"That's not what I meant," Kyle said, "I'm sorry to upset you like this, but I'm actually glad the kiss happened."
"At least you're honest about your preference to kiss Summer over me," Rachel said, with tears welling.
"That is not at all what I am saying," Kyle said, "Please let me explain this better."
"Explain what?" Rachel exploded, "That you would rather be with another woman!"
"I never said that," Kyle said.
"In a way you just did," Rachel said.
"Baby, please calm down and listen to me," Kyle said. Rachel just looked at him and cried.
"Hey," Kyle said, going to her and wiping her tears away with his fingers, "Please don't cry." Taking her hands, he led her to the couch, saying, "Come sit with me."
Rachel's heart was pounding as she braced herself for Kyle to tell her their marriage was over. "Can you please hear me out?" Kyle said. Rachel nodded. "First of all, I don't ever want you to think I don't love you, because that is not true. We have been through so much together. When I was sick and dealing with the tumor, other than my Dad, you were the one person that was there for me. Through dealing with the diagnosis, appointments, setbacks, surgery and recovery, you were there with me every single day. I love you so much for that. I couldn't have made it through it all, without you."
"While I was going through the kidnapping, all I could think about was coming home to you," Kyle continued, "I knew it was hard on you too and once we were reunited, it felt so good just to hold you in my arms again."
"I thought I'd lost you," Rachel said.
"I know," Kyle said, "You almost did. What I'm trying to say is I love you, not anyone else. When I said, I was glad the kiss happened, I meant because it made me realize that my feelings for Summer were not what I thought they were. It wasn't romantic notions, I was afraid our friendship was going to fade away, once she got married. Once I realized that, we talked it out and promised to still be friends."
"It's just…" Rachel started, "I feel like you and I have been drifting apart."
"We haven't been making time for each other, like we should be," Kyle said, "I want to change that."
"I want that too," Rachel said, "Kyle, do have any idea how very much I love you?"
Stroking her cheek, Kyle said, "You are my heart and my soul." Kyle pulled Rachel into a kiss.
Nuzzling her cheek, Kyle said, "What time is Diana coming home?"
"Chloe is going to bring her home in a couple of hours," Rachel said.
"It just so happens, I don't have any meetings in the office this morning," Kyle said, "What do you say, we make the most of our time alone?" Kyle stood up and pulled Rachel to her feet.
"Kyle, are you suggesting playing hooky?" Rachel teased.
"Oh, I'm suggesting playing a lot more than that," Kyle smirked.
Knocking on the front door, and not getting a response, Chloe pushed it slightly open. "Rachel?" she called out. Stepping inside she said, "Is anyone home?"
Chloe was greeted by the sight, of a giggling Rachel, draped in one of Kyle's shirts, come racing down the stairs, with an underwear clad Kyle, close behind her. Kyle grabbed Rachel around to waist from behind, making her giggle even more. They both stopped in their pose when they noticed Chloe.
An awkward pause presented itself, until Chloe said, "I knocked."
"Sorry, we didn't hear you," Rachel said, catching her breath, "We were…"
"Busy," Kyle finished for her. Keeping his hold on Rachel, Kyle said, "Where's Diana?"
"She's right out here in the stroller," Chloe said, "Passed out asleep."
"How was she?" Rachel said.
"Just fine," Chloe said, "A little angel."
"Good," Rachel said, as Kyle nodded.
Perceiving, Kyle and Rachel wanted to continue their activities, Chloe said, "You know what, why don't I take Diana for a walk. Say an hour, hour and half?"
"Make it four," Kyle said, as Rachel nudged him.
"You can just let me know, when you're ready," Chloe said.
"Will do," Kyle said, snuggling Rachel closer.
Chloe scuttled out of the house. "Now, where were we?" Kyle said.
"We were going up there," Rachel said, pointing upstairs.
"Again?" Kyle mocked exasperation.
Backing away from him and unbuttoning the shirt she was wearing, Rachel said, "Mr. Abbott, I am not finished with you yet."
Rachel turned and ran, as Kyle sprinted up the stairs after her.
"Do you think they will show up sometime today?" Summer said, sitting at Crimson Lights, with Fen.
"I know what you mean," Fen said, "I wish we didn't have to wait for them like this."
"Ask and you shall receive," Summer said, nodding towards the entrance.
"Hi, sorry," Kyle said, pushing the baby stroller, followed by Rachel, "I hope you haven't been waiting long."
"Only a couple of hours," Fen said.
"It hasn't been that long," Summer said.
"We got held up," Rachel said, sharing a sly smile with Kyle.
"Is that her?" Fen said, gesturing the baby stroller, "Can I see?"
"Of course," Rachel said, "But she's sleeping, so please don't wake her."
Fen crept to the other side of the stroller, saying, "Wow, she's really cute."
"And growing like a weed," Rachel said.
Looking at Summer, Fen said, "There's a baby in there."
"I figured," Summer said.
"Come look," Fen said, reaching out for Summer to come closer. As she stood by his side, Fen said, "Isn't she beautiful?"
"She's really something," Summer said.
"I can't wait till we have a baby too," Fen said.
Kyle looked at them as he pulled out Rachel's chair, then drumming the table, as he sat down.
"So, what's her name?" Fen said, and he and Summer sat across from them, "Rachel Jr? Kylette?"
"Oh, so funny," Rachel dryly said.
"Her name is Diana," Kyle said.
"After Kyle's mom," Summer said.
"Yes," Kyle said, "And my grandmother."
"I didn't mean to make fun," Fen said, "It's nice for her to have those namesakes."
"Why did you want to see us?" Kyle said.
"Do you want to tell them?" Fen said.
"It's your idea," Summer said, "You go ahead."
"Okay," Fen said, "Summer and I are getting married in a few weeks. We wanted to ask you both a big favor."
"Like what?" Rachel said.
"We would like you both to be in our wedding party," Fen said.
"You mean a bridesmaid?" Rachel said.
"Not exactly," Fen said, "We were thinking you could be our maid of honor and best man."
Kyle and Rachel laughed at the prospect. Noticing Summer and Fen were not joining in, Kyle said, "You're not serious."
"We are," Summer said.
Kyle and Rachel exchanged a look, before Kyle said, "That's really nice, but I will ask the obvious question. Why us?"
"This is the thing," Fen said, "Kyle and Summer have been friends forever, so I wanted to do this for Summer. Rachel, you and I are friends, so Summer agreed to do it for me."
"You're asking us for each other?" Kyle said.
"Even though this isn't what you really want?" Rachel said.
"Fen let's face it," Kyle said, "You and I are not best buds. The ladies also have some issues getting along."
"That's the point, to change all that and start fresh," Fen said, "I think we could all be great friends if we try."
"Wouldn't it make more sense if I stood up for Summer and Rachel does for Fen?" Kyle said.
"That's not a bad idea," Summer said, "To change things up."
"Best person?" Fen said.
"I think it's a better option," Summer said.
Nodding, Fen said, "Then let's go with that. Only if you two agree to do this."
"Will you stand up for me?" Summer said.
A tense pause passed between them, before Kyle said, "Of course I will."
"Rachel, will you be my best person?" Fen said.
"I would be happy to," Rachel said.
"Great," Fen smiled, "This is coming together."
"If you're sure you are both okay with this," Summer said.
"Summer, believe me," Rachel said, "I would love nothing more than to see you get married."
"I would love that too," Fen said, pulling Summer into a kiss. Averting his eyes, Kyle sat back in his chair, with a small sigh.
"Maybe there's hope for us yet," Summer said.
"Hope," Fen said, checking his watch, "Rachel we have to go. We have the meeting, to go over things with Devon."
"That's today?" Rachel said.
"We're finalizing everything before we record," Fen said, "He's already pushed back dates for us, we shouldn't make him wait any longer."
"I have a small problem," Rachel said, gesturing to the baby stroller.
"Hi, I'm her father," Kyle said, "She can stay with me."
"Are you sure?" Rachel said.
"Yes, have your meeting," Kyle said "Go be a superstar."
"I'll try not to be long," Rachel said.
"No worries," Kyle smiled. Summer shifted uncomfortably in her chair, as Rachel gave Kyle a goodbye kiss.
"Bye babe," Fen said, kissing Summer's cheek.
Left alone, Kyle and Summer were having trouble making conversation.
"So, did you have fun last night?" Summer said.
"Excuse me?" Kyle said.
"You were worried Rachel would be upset you were home so late," Summer said.
"Things were a little tense," Kyle said, "But let's just say, my wife and I made up for lost time."
"I thought so," Summer said, "The way you were grinning at each other when you got here."
They both shifted their attention to the baby, as Kyle said, "At least she's asleep." On cue the baby woke and began to wail.
"You were saying?" Summer said.
