"So what's the word?" Ren asks, settled in and looking 100% put together, as always, at her desk.
Donno envies her this briefly, before exhaling. "We failed," he mumbles. "We didn't get the money, Luke and Paige are both dead. Well," he tacks on with a frown. "Believed dead. No one's seen Paige's body."
"Well, that's ... something, I guess," Ren says. Donno doesn't quite meet her eye after this, and her frown grows. "Donno?"
"Sorry we failed you," he says in a rush. "It was... I thought it'd be easier than it was, instead it-"
"It got really complicated, really fast," Ren finishes when he flounders for a way to explain it.
"Yeah. I didn't think it'd end like this."
"Don't worry about it," she says, and when he looks up, doubt in his eyes, she scoffs. "I mean it, Donno. Yeah, I knew you could handle it, that's why I suggested you, but there were extenuating circumstances. It sucks, but it happens. I don't blame you, and if those people have an issue, they know better than to take it up with you or Tonya. Don't worry."
"You sure?" he asks.
"Completely," Ren says, lounging back in her chair and examining him through her screen some more. "How does it feel to be back at your restaurant?"
"Good," he says. "I missed cooking. Even though we had somebody in ordering veggie burgers today."
"What a waste," Ren muses.
"That's what I told him." They sit in comfortable silence for awhile, until Donno says, "That weird camping lady was here poking around though. Guess she's not done trying to figure me and Tonya out."
"Weird camping lady," Ren says. "Doesn't really narrow it down much."
"Sunny, the one who hosted all of that mess," Donno explains. "She came in and was fishing for something. Told us she thinks Paige is still alive."
"Weird," Ren murmurs. "Well, let me know if anything else weird comes from that. She better not be trying to make something out of nothing."
"Yeah, they closed the camp down, I figured they'd leave us alone, but maybe not. I'll do what I can to keep suspicion off of us, and will let you know if I see her again."
Ren nods. "Good man. Well, unfortunately, it's late and I have early meetings. Same time next week?"
Donno nods, distracted by his suspicious thoughts, still trying to make sense of what Sunny and her crew may want with them now. "Yeah, see you then."
"It'll straighten itself out, Donno," Ren insists. "Don't worry, alright? You and Tonya will be fine."
"We'd better be," he says, toying with a knife with his free hand.
"You will," Ren tells him with no lack of certainty. "See you next week."
Donno finally shakes his thoughts and looks up, nodding. "See you then."
