Chapter 26

Kara carefully removes the paper, very different from her usual tear it off style, feeling nervous because of the expression on Lena's face. She removes the last of the wrapping and the lid and ruffles through the tissue paper to pull out a small item…

A little blue and red onesie with her crest on it.

Kara turns to Lena, blue eyes wide and watering.

"I figured it out", Lena breathes shakily, "I'm going to have Brainy come in as well, but I've figured out how to convert straight DNA into an egg and sperm and create an embryo".

"We're going to have a baby?", Kara says, her voice cracking.

Lena nods, as tears roll down her cheeks.

Kara carefully sets the onesie back in the box and setting it aside moves to straddle Lena, cupping her jaw. "You are the smartest", she leaves a kiss on Lena's forehead, "most amazing", a kiss on the cheek, "intelligent", a kiss on the other cheek, "woman and I am so lucky", and now Kara tilts Lena's chin up and connects their lips in a loving, tender, deep kiss. Lena tastes like chocolate and wine and tears and something so distinctly Lena that Kara falls even more in love with her as she gently lays Lena back, never breaking the kiss.

"You are going to be the best mom ever", Kara praises as Lena catches her breath.

"Are we ready for this?", Lena asks.

"I'm in. 1000%", Kara says, reconnecting their lips, "Are you?".

"I don't think I ever will truly be ready, but I can't wait to start a family with you", Lena says.

Kara smiles, kissing her again, "So as soon as you and Brainy deem it safe, we're pregnant?".

Lena nods, the lump in her throat stopping her from speaking as she pulls Kara back down by her shirt, crashing their lips together.

This is everything she's dreamed of and never thought she'd have, or deserve, and here's this perfect woman laying on top of her ready to have a child and Lena knows she's never felt this whole in her life.

After Christmas with the whole family, Eliza heads back to Midvale the next morning. Kara spends the 26th taking care of any leftovers in the fridge while she and Lena enjoy a quiet day at home, full of cuddles and discussions about their future. Unfortunately, Lena has the last board meeting of the year on the 27th.

"Five more minutes", Kara grunts at the blaring sound of the alarm, pulling Lena tight against her. Lena snuggles into the contact, kissing Kara's neck until Kara's grip loosens as she falls back into sleep. Lena takes the opportunity to slip out of the bed and get ready for work.

By the time she comes out of the bathroom, Kara is sitting on the bed, a coffee mug in each hand and a big pout on her face.

Lena raises a brow and reaches for her favorite mug, "Thank you darling".

Kara doesn't respond, petulantly sticking her lip out further. Lena takes another sip of the warm coffee before leaning in to kiss the pout away. Despite her stubbornness, Kara is no match for her wife and the pout melts into a soft smile as she deepens the kiss.

"I hate that I have to go but I have that meeting and Brainy is coming in later", Lena says, a smile on her face.

Kara smiles as well and pulls Lena back in, "You're right. Go teach those old guys a lesson. I should probably start proofing the holiday edition anyway".

"I should be home for dinner", Lena says, making her way to the closet to get dressed.

"Just call and let me know. I can make something", Kara says, watching from her place on the bed.

"I will", Lena says, putting the finishing touches on, in the form of jewelry, adding a necklace Kara got for her and earrings that match the stone in her ring. "I love you, see you later", Lena says, giving Kara another kiss before heading to grab her laptop.

"Love you too", Kara replies, following Lena's lips as she stands from the bed and head to get herself ready for the day.

"Mrs. Luthor", Jess calls, letting herself into the lab.

"Yes Jess", Lena says, turning away from Brainy to her assistant.

"Some investors are asking about the gala…", Jess says, looking at Brainy.

"You can speak freely in front of him", Lena says, urging her to go on.

"There are some from China that would like to speak with you and partner to start an office in Beijing", Jess says.

"Really?", Lena asks, she's met with people from all over the globe, but none have taken the initiative to reach out to her.

"They would like to meet with you and attend the gala and have offered to host you and show you around the city to see if you think L-Corp could find a place there", Jess says.

Lena turns to Brainy, "So sorry I should go sort this out".

"Of course, Lena", Brainy says, "This project is ready for full trials".

Lena grins, excitement over everything going right warming her. "Thank you Brainy", she says, knowing she is one step closer. She makes a mental note to speak with a fertility specialist to make sure that it produces viable embryos after the new year.

The rest of the week is spent with Lena organizing finishing touches for the gala as well as the last few reports for the quarter. She spends nearly five hours in her office with Sam, sitting on the rug, papers strewn all around them, the day before the gala. Sam lays back on the floor, releasing the air from her lungs in an exaggerated sigh.

"This sucks but it is a lot easier with you here", Lena says, looking up from the financial statements to her friends.

Sam lifts her head to give Lena a smile, "Same here. Is everything ready for tomorrow?".

"Barring something big everything should be as close to perfect as I can get it", Lena shrugs, knowing so much could go wrong. There haven't been as many alien attacks since Christmas and Kara hasn't had to go out as Supergirl.

Lena is startled out of her thoughts by a familiar knock on the glass and a smile spreads across her face as she sees Kara touch down on the balcony, carrying Alex and food.

She motions for the sisters to come in as Sam throws her head back and groans, "Why can't I have a superpowered partner that comes to my balcony".

Alex smirks, walking over to Sam, "I may not have powers, but I can still visit, right?". Sam shoots up, nearly cracking heads with Alex, eyes wide. "I'll take that as a yes", Alex laughs, leaning in to kiss her girlfriend.

Kara and Lena barely notice the exchange too wrapped up in their own kiss.

"Eww gross you two", Alex complains.

"Yeah, I'd rather not see what I can hear during your weekly lunches", Sam laughs, shrugging, "The walls are thin".

"So, you can kiss your girlfriend hello, but I can't kiss my wife?", Kara says, glaring at Alex. Once Alex makes a guilty face, Kara smiles triumphantly and kisses Lena again.

"Ok though, what did you bring to eat because I'm starving", Sam asks, digging through the bag.

The four women settle in for the impromptu double date. Kara and Alex unbag the food while Sam and Lena gather the files and papers from the floor, coffee table, and couch. The four sit around the coffee table, Sam and Alex leaning with their backs against the couch, shoulders brushing and Kara and Lena on the other side with Lena using Kara as a back rest.

"You're literally letting Lena get between you and food", Alex teases and Kara gives her a confused look, cheeks stuffed with food.

Lena cranes her neck to kiss Kara's cheek as she swallows.

"So?", Kara asks, taking another bite.

Alex shrugs, shaking her head, laughing at her sister and Sam changes the topic.

The group talks about life and the holidays until eventually the discussion moves to the gala.

"Oh yeah. Do I have to wear a dress for that?", Alex asks, turning to Sam.

"What would you rather wear?", Sam asks.

"That fancy black tux", Alex admits.

"Danvers sisters rocking the tux", Kara cheers, reaching for a high-five.

"So you are wearing a suit!", Lena exclaims turning around to look at Kara.

"Dang it", Kara sighs, "yeah…but you still can't see it. It'll ruin the surprise".

"Honestly how you kept a secret that long still astounds me", Lena laughs.

Kara pouts while the other three laugh until Lena takes pity on her and kisses the pout away.

"Honestly how you haven't become immune to the pout still astounds me", Alex says, mocking Lena, starting another round of laughter.

"Maybe I just love her more", Lena says, raising an eyebrow at Alex before kissing Kara again, deeply.

"Eww ok, you win. You win", Alex complains.

"I am a Luthor", Lena smirks.

"Luthor-Danvers", Kara corrects causing Lena to lean in for another kiss.

"You ready?", Kara calls from outside the closet door.

The women had gotten ready separately because Kara wanted to surprise Lena.

"Ok", Lena answers and opens the door.

Upon finally laying eyes on Lena, Kara forgets that she was supposed to be surprising her. The blonde's jaw drops as her hand reaches out to lightly trace Lena's exposed collar bones and down her arms as she takes in the deep green flowing dress that still manages to hug Lena just right. "Rao", Kara breathes out.

"Rao is right", Lena says, taking in Kara's outfit. The almost midnight blue suit brings out her eyes even more and Lena swears she can almost make out her abs under the tightly fitted vest.

Lena reaches out, fiddling with the knot of the dark red tie that perfectly matches the shade of her lipstick. "You look…", Lena takes a shuddering breath, "hot".

Kara leans in, the piercing blue of her eyes nearly taken over by her dilated pupils. "Are you sure we have to go to this?", she asks, voice husky and confident.

Lena feels heat race down her spine and settle in her stomach before she gathers herself. "Just until midnight darling", she says, fingers still playing with Kara's tie. "Two hours. Can you make it?", Lena says, pulling Kara closer by the tie, lips merely touching.

Kara nods carefully and Lena kisses her, careful not to smudge or leave her lipstick on Kara, and the two head down to the street where Frank is waiting.

"Damn Danvers", Sam wolf whistles as she comes out of the bathroom.

"You like?", Alex says, spinning around.

"Very much", Sam says, pulling Alex in by the lapels of the jacket. While she had gone for a simple but elegant red sheath dress, Alex had gone for a sleek all black suit. Sam had convinced her to wear a red tie that matched her dress.

"You look beautiful", Alex says, after the kiss.

Sam blushes and kisses her again before ushering them out the door, "Come on we're going to be late".

"Oh no", Alex says, following her downstairs, "You are not going to blame this one on me. I was ready 15 minutes ago".

"You good?", Sam asks Ruby, kissing her on the head as she passes, ignoring Alex.

"I'll be fine", Ruby answers before looking at Alex, "She trying to blame her tardiness on you?".

"Yeah!", Alex says.

"Get used to it", Ruby laughs, "at least it's you and not me".

Alex huffs and Sam placates her with a kiss, "Come on the driver is waiting".

Alex relents, saying bye to Ruby as Sam drags her out the door.

Frank brings the car to a gentle stop outside the venue and Kara slides out first, standing tall and straightening her jacket before reaching in to take Lena by the hand as she helps her step out of the car. Lena emerges and the paparazzi camped out on the street go crazy as she pecks Kara's cheek before sliding her hand up to the crook of Kara's elbow and they make their way inside.

The smile on Lena's face melts into a more natural one as she leans into Kara now out of the camera's view. "That picture will be on every cover tomorrow", Lena laughs.

"Probably CATCO's too", Kara smiles, "I'm pretty sure Alan was the one yelling my name instead of yours".

The women make their way further into the ballroom and Kara clocks the refreshment table first. She is shocked when Lena pulls her that way first before she sees Sam and Alex standing by the open bar.

They all greet each other with a hug before Kara heads to the food and Lena gets herself a glass of champagne.

The four talk for a while before Lena sees the Chinese investors and drags Sam to meet them. The Danvers sisters watch their dates walk away and fist bump because they don't have to do the corporate mingling and fake smiles.

Kara waits a while longer, eating more of the appetizers, talking with Alex before going to save Lena from the conversation.

Kara strides up behind her, wrapping an arm around Lena's waist. Lena startles for a second until she recognizes Kara's touch and leans into the embrace. "Gentlemen, I'm sorry. This is my wife, Kara".

"Nice to meet you", Kara greets them with handshakes, "Sorry to interrupt, I was just wondering if I could steal my wife for a dance".

"Dāngrán shì. Of course", the businessmen answer.

"I can't wait to discuss this further with you all on Monday", Lena says, graciously shaking their hands before allowing Kara to lead her to the dance floor.

Lena drapes her arms over Kara's shoulders as Kara pulls her close by the waist and starts gently swaying, "Thank you, darling".

"No problem", Kara replies, "I know your excited about the opportunity, but you started to look a little spaced out as that guy rambled on".

Lena's eyes go wide, "You don't think he noticed?".

"No of course not", Kara reassures her, "I just know you really well".

Lena smiles, "I love you".

"I love you", Kara echoes, leaning in for a kiss when the glass windows around them shatter.

Kara uses her grip on Lena to spin her so her back is pressed against her front as she turns them away from the glass. Thankfully, Lena curls in on herself and Kara manages to keep her away from the glass.

As soon as the glass stops hitting her back, Kara turns to see five hulking aliens coming in the newly vacant frames from the back of the building.

"Go!", she shouts to Lena, amidst the panic, "Get out. Call J'onn". Kara slides the earpiece out of her pocket, thankful she thought to bring it and double taps her wedding band, activating her suit.

Lena nods and crashes their lips together. "Be safe", she says, worry already consuming her thoughts.

"I love you", Kara answers, "Now go! Please".

Lena kisses her again and takes off.

Kara turns, ears tuned to Lena's heartbeat as she scans the crows for her sister. She spots Alex and Sam knelt behind a refreshments table with several other guest and speed over there.

"Hey Kara", Alex says, with an empty ankle holster, "All I've got is lead… will it work on any of them".

"I don't know", Kara says, "Lena is calling J'onn and I'm trying to connect to comms". She taps the earpiece again, "Agent in charge do you read me". When no response comes, she turns to Alex, "Ok look you get everyone out of here and call J'onn, Nia, and Brainy. We're going to need everyone on the field. I'm going to distract them so you can get these people out of here".

Alex nods and Kara kicks off the floor hard, grateful for the high ceilings as she hovers over the five aliens who are in a formation in the middle of the room but thankfully aren't aiming for civilians. She hears screams all around her but focuses in on Lena's heartbeat almost a block away, 'I hope that's far enough', she thinks, before addressing the aliens.

After Kara takes off, Alex reholsters the gun, knowing it won't do anything and turns to Sam. "You just get out here and get everyone outside as far away as possible", she says, handing Sam her phone, "call J'onn and tell him to get every available team down here, now". Alex swallows hard, "I love you. Now go".

Sam nods and kisses her, saying, "Be safe", before running for the doors.

"Why are you here?", Kara shouts down at the aliens.

"Kara, daughter of Zor-El and Alura In-Ze. You need to come with us", one of the aliens speaks up, "You are hereby charged by the sins of your parents and have been apprehended by us".

By the time the alien finishes his speech, the ballroom is cleared out, comms are live with Demos reporting that the agents are on their way, and Brainy, Nia, and J'onn are outside.

"Krypton is dead", Kara says, her voice flat, "I am not in your custody, nor shall I ever be".

The team takes this as their cue, and they swoop in to help Kara.

Kara manages to knock the weakest alien out quickly, leaving them four v four. The agents arrive and Alex reenters, clad in combat gear, surrounded by agents, her alien gun in its rightful place.

With all of them together they manage to take out three more aliens quickly and the last, seeing his imminent defeat, kills the unconscious aliens before taking his own life.

The team stands there, in the midst of the carnage, bewildered by the final act.

"Well there goes Lena's deposit", Kara sighs.

The agents come closer, scooping up the remains and starting to clean the mess.

J'onn claps Kara on the shoulder, "We should meet back at the DEO". Everyone nods and takes off.

Everyone is gathered around the command center, including Lena and Sam.

"I can't have any event without getting attacked apparently, even with Lex and Lillian gone", Lena says.

"Well this one was on me", Kara says, looking guilty.

"I don't understand", Alex huffs out, "They fight to the death. Even when you don't kill them they kill themselves rather than lose". She paces short strides while thinking outloud before turning to Kara, "Did they already know you were there or were they betting on Supergirl protecting the people?", Alex asks.

"Why does that matter?", Kara asks.

"Well before now, it seemed like they didn't know Kara Danvers was Supergirl", Alex says, "Now they definitely do. You've got to be more careful Kara".

"Rao this again!", Kara huffs, clenching her fists to avoid putting them through the table, "I came out as Supergirl already. There is no more secret identity and I'm not going to go back to hiding again".

"I'm just saying", Alex starts, "Now they know you and Lena…".

"You don't think I realize that!", Kara shouts, "You know that was why I waited so long. Why it took me three years tell her I'm Supergirl, five to forget the fear and tell her I love her. Why every time I wake up in the middle of the night its not my planet dying anymore, it's my life ending, my sun going dark. That's my biggest fucking fear, losing her". Kara barely register the tears tracking down her cheeks as her chest heaves, "But I will not hide anymore, Alex".

Everyone goes silent around the table, Alex looks rightfully chastised, and Kara, fists still clenched, eyes full of tears, turns and walks out to the balcony.

Lena looks at Alex, green eyes welling with tears, and shakes her head before following Kara. She stops in the doorframe, leaning against it, "Hey". Kara sniffs but doesn't respond, resolutely looking out at the skyline. Lena takes a few steps forward, lightly placing her hand between Kara's shoulder blades. "You never told me", she says.

"I don't have nightmares often anymore", Kara admits quietly, "usually my dreams are happy ones, lately more about the future, the baby, us, but every once in a while, after a big attack like this, especially when they know who I am…". Her voice breaks and she can't speak. Lena takes the opportunity to circle around in front of her, looking into the shiny blue eyes, full of grief and anxiety. She double taps the crest, the nanites responding to her touch, and deactivates the suit. Kara takes a deep breath as if Lena released a great weight off her shoulders, "When it's one of those, it's ok because I wake up and you're there… and I… I am going to do everything I can to make sure that you have the long, happy life you deserve".

"Kara", Lena breathes, emotions clouding her thoughts, eyes, and voice, "The only thing I need for that is you. I just want you". Lena raises up to kiss her and Kara sinks into it, her hands finally releasing from the fist as she grips Lena's hips. The kiss tastes like tears and champagne and each other and they only separate for air when Lena gets desperate and instead stand together, arms wrapped around each other, their faces buried in each others' neck.

Lena lifts her head to see the large digital clock inside, just as it turns to 12:00:00, "I know these aren't the best circumstances but Happy New Year, Kara".

"Happy New Year, Lena", Kara says, a genuine smile cutting through the melancholia.

Lena kisses her, lovingly, reassuringly before wrapping her in another hug.

"We'll figure this out", Lena says, finally, "El Mayarah".

"El Mayarah", Kara echoes, nuzzling deeper into Lena's neck, not wanting to let go.

AN: I know it started out so happy but we're getting into the good stuff now. A few more chapters in this part before I take a short break for the holidays and before part three. Yes many of you have asked if there will be another part and there will. In the beginning, I hadn't planned for this to go this long or be so loved by so many of you, so thank you.

I don't know for exactly how many more chapters I will write for this one but it will be more than three, which is how many posting days I have before my break starts, so you all may be getting a bonus chapter.

Thank you all so much for reading, reviewing, and commenting and I'll see you again Monday.
