Chapter 2: The Last of the Forty-One

When Suzuki Satoru woke up, he did so in a panic. He bolted up, dazzled and confused. Where was he? He blinked at his surroundings, bewildered. It took him a good three seconds before he realized he was in a massive king's bed, a very cushy and comfortable one at that.

"Holy crap," Suzuki exclaimed. "The Tomb – the NPCs… and Albedo…"

He dropped back on his bed with a huff, his hands rubbing his tired face.

"Oh God, what have I gotten myself into?" Suzuki groaned.

He laid there, staring at the ceiling. On the one hand, he wasn't in his horrid flat, with only disgusting nutritious goo for breakfast. On the other hand, he was stuck with a nation's worth of concerns and responsibilities.

Suzuki turned his head at the floating Staff of Ainz Ooal Gown. He raised a hand, and drew the object straight into his grasp. A wave of power washed over him, one that brought a sense of comfort and which allowed Suzuki to close his eyes and smile.

"I guess it could have been worse," Suzuki thought. "I could have arrived here all alone…"

And yet, he was alone, wasn't he? Suzuki sat up with a scowl and studied the Staff of Ainz Ooal Gown, his only companion in the room. Even in the darkness of his room, the staff glowed with its immense power.

"I wish they had come in the end," Suzuki said. "If they had showed up and stayed till the end…"

He thought of HeroHero, one of the last members of Ainz Ooal Gown who ever got online. Unfortunately, Herohero was sleep-deprived the last time Suzuki met with him, and Suzuki had been unable to ask Herohero to hold out for longer. It wasn't like either of them could have known what would happen a couple of hours later, after all.

If the members of Ainz Ooal Gown had showed up, if they had answered to his email, if they had all wished to see the Great Tomb one last time straight to the end…

"They would have been here with me," Suzuki thought with a wistful smile. "Ulbert would have loved it here, just like Tabula." His smile grew. "Takemizuchi too… Hell, I think everyone would have loved to rule the Great Tomb here." His smile turned sheepish. "Well, except Touch Me. He had a wife and daughter…"

His grin slowly faltered and Suzuki's face devolved into a sad grimace. He held the Staff with both hands, staring dead ahead.

Why didn't you come, my friends? Suzuki thought.

Slowly, his sadness turned into bitterness, and a scowl formed on his face as he gritted his teeth.

I guess they all deserve to get stuck IRL then, bitterly thought Suzuki.

The Staff of Ainz Ooal Gown glowed a simmering red, making Suzuki frown at it. Sadly, the Staff didn't offer anything more than the strange light. In the end, Suzuki's anger was short-lived, replaced by his usual nostalgia.

"I guess there's no use to wallow in self-pity," sighed Suzuki. He slowly got out of bed. "I am an Overlord now, the sole ruler of the Great Tomb of Ainz Ooal Gown…"

He stood up and then looked down at himself.

"I definitely need undergarments," muttered Suzuki. "The ruler of the Great Tomb of Nazarick… without underpants. Off to a great start."

He sighed, shaking his head.

"One problem at a time, Suzuki… one problem at a time…"

He went to his wardrobe and opened it. He was not surprised to have found the same black spell-caster robes from the day before hanging inside, as well as a box where he had put away all of his jewelry. It wasn't like he had bothered to put actual clothes inside before the transfer. The robes he usually needed, like the Robes of the Divine Monk (which conferred Holy Resistance) and the Hellborn Robes of the Demon (which gave Fire resistance) were in his inventory, and he didn't feel like wearing those at the moment.

In the end, Suzuki put on his robes, definitely not used to wearing such attires over his person. The feel of the material over his skin was odd, but not as much as just how airy it felt. In the end, he ignored the feeling and then moved onto the jewelry box.

It was as he started putting his rings back on that he realized two things: he could have put everything in his inventory rather than waste time with the wardrobe and, second, he hadn't tested whether he still had the same gear restrictions as in Yggrassil. Could he perhaps wear more than one ring per finger?

Suzuki stroke his chin. It would definitely have its benefits. If only he had more rings on him…

I could visit the Treasury today, thought Suzuki. I need to see how much of a dent I've made already in the Guild's coffers after yesterday's reconstructions and…

Suzuki gasped and slapped a hand over his face

"Pandora's Actor!" He gasped. "I forgot about him!"

His own creation, Suzuki realized, had been trapped in the treasury, without food, water or even a bathroom! Suzuki felt like he had forgotten a dog inside his car on a hot day, if not worse. How could Suzuki have forgotten about him? It wasn't like Pandora's Actor could actually leave the Treasury if he wanted to.

With a new sense of urgency, Suzuki rushed to his door, reached the doorknob and-

He froze.

Even if he desperately needed to check on Pandora's Actor, he also remembered there was a small army of devoted NPCs waiting out there. Suzuki wasn't sure he was ready to face them again. He knew he had to, yet a part of him was daunted at all the decisions thrown on his lap. It was too much, way above a salary man's paygrade.

Suzuki felt the Staff of Ainz Ooal Gown hum with power. It flooded across his body, pushing away his doubts. A smile crept on Suzuki's face. He took a deep breath and puffed his chest.

"You can do this," he told himself. "You are Lord Momonga, Guild Master of Ainz Ooal Gown."

And with that he walked out of his bedroom. He was actually surprised when he saw no one jumping from a corner to greet him with unbearable zealousness. A part of him expected as much. Thus, he stood by the door frame, baffled, before scanning his office. It took one glance to realize he wasn't exactly alone. Sebas, the Pleiades and Albedo were present just… not as he had expected.

Suzuki walked over to the wall behind his desk, where Sebas stood. He stared in amazement as the Butler, the powerful dragonoid of the Ninth Floor, remained upright, even with his eyes closed. Even then, Sebas held himself with the utmost professionalism and elegance befitting a high-grade butler.

He's asleep, Suzuki realized. He's actually sleeping while standing.

Sebas wasn't the only one asleep on his two feet. The Pleiades, standing in line by the door, were also standing much like they used to when they were mere code, if only with their eyes closed. Suzuki was quite annoyed no one had bothered using the beds he had gone out of his way to ensure for them. However, his annoyance was replaced by confusion when he looked at Yuri Alpha.

She was a Dullahan, a decapitated undead. And yet, there she was, fast asleep. Weren't Undead supposed to be racially immune to sleep?

Maybe it is just sleep effects, or maybe some other rules had changed, wondered Suzuki.

He might had been more invested in the intriguing questions, were it not for a certain Overseer. Albedo was, after all, a different case entirely. Rather than standing, she had laid down one of the sofas not far in front of Suzuki's desk. The succubus had curled up in a ball, still clad in her white dress, and seemed in deep slumber. She slept with a placid smile, looking almost angelic. All in all, she was a mesmerizing sight to behold.

She's beautiful, and cute, Suzuki thought as he studied her.

A grimace formed on his face.

And I ruined her, he thought. I made her love me like a fool…

The worst part was that he didn't know what to do about it. Had he daydreamed about sleeping with Albedo? Of course he had! He was a red-blooded man, a desperate virgin at that, so of course he had such fantasies. However, he hadn't actually expected his fantasy to become a reality, and that scared him. For all of his lust, Suzuki wasn't sure he actually wanted to sleep with Albedo now that she was a living person.

And yet, seeing her like that, so adorable and innocent, and above all breath-taking, Suzuki couldn't help but allow the temptation grow in him. Would it be wrong to abuse Albedo's BIO like that? It would be so easy too. All he had to do was ask. If he said the word, she would probably do anything he so much wanted to…

Is it even safe? He worriedly pondered. She has a lot of strength in her stats… she could accidentally snap me like a twig! And then there's the whole succubus thing. Don't succubus drain souls of the people they had sex with or something like that?

Suzuki sighed, annoyed as yet more questions popped in his mind. Did he even have a soul? Were souls real? Magic definitely was real so there was no telling if souls weren't a thing either… so yeah, maybe sleeping with an overpowered character like Albedo was definitely a hazard he could do without.

Dude, death by snu-snu is not such a bad way to go, Peroronchino's voice echoed across Suzuki's mind.

Oh, come on! The last thing I need is the opinion of a pervert in my head, mentally groaned Suzuki.

It isn't right what you did, Momonga, the imaginary voice of Yamaiko chimed in. You should take responsibility: either accept her feelings and properly court her or stop leading her on. Don't make her suffer if you aren't going to reciprocate!

Easier said than done, muttered Suzuki. I have way too much on my plate to start thinking about- about-

Suzuki's face burned up as he studied Albedo, old fantasies coming unbidden to the forefront of his mind.

Remove Albedo from your perverted fantasies, Momonga! Came in the voice Tabula.

Hey, I didn't mean to! Replied a flustered Suzuki. I just-

"…Lord Momonga…" hummed the sleeping Albedo, interrupting his imaginary discussion.

Oh, she's dreaming about me, Suzuki chuckled.

Suddenly, Albedo's smile turned devious and a pink blush formed on her cheeks.

"Ooh, yes, Lord Momonga… just like that…" she huskily whispered.

Suzuki stared, wide-eyed. He couldn't do anything than blink repeatedly as Albedo squirmed a bit, before she remained still, releasing a long satisfied smile. In the end, there was one thing Suzuki could do:

"Nope! I think I had enough Albedo for one day," Suzuki murmured, making a hasty retreat.

Better not to disturb Albedo's sleep, after all.

Suzuki stopped at his chamber's door. Now that he had a chance to think about it, he wasn't sure what to do next. Should he go for breakfast or would the other NPCs also be fast asleep? He looked at his hand, or rather a certain ring.

I have someone to meet, Suzuki thought.

He closed his eyes and concentrated. It didn't take him long for something to shift in him and, all of a sudden, the ruler of Nazarick vanished from his chambers, leaving behind sleeping NPCs.

When the Developers had awarded Ainz Ooal Gown with the Tomb of Nazarick, and the Throne of Kings, they had set a series of rules and guidelines regarding the layout of the dungeon. Most were limitations that made it impossible for Ainz Ooal Gown to make their guild-base impenetrable. For example, each floor could only have one Level 100 NPC, and could only be as strong as the previous Floor Boss. The Dungeon Boss itself, in the end, was relegated to entire Guild. Even with the guidelines and limitations, however, Ainz Ooal Gown managed to find way too many loopholes.

The Treasury had been one of them. The Developers had demanded for any treasures within the dungeon to be somewhat accessible to any invaders, for it was the case for every guild-base. After all, why would any guilds find an incentive to invade a rival guild base if they couldn't get their stuff? Thus, what did the Ainz Ooal Gown do? Create the Treasury separate from the floors themselves and only accessible through teleportation.

Suzuki had seen the Treasury many times. As a hoarder by nature, Suzuki constantly returned to the place to put away items, sometimes useless crap he felt attached to, other times things that were too valuable to carry around. This time, however, Suzuki felt a deep sense of foreboding. How could he not? He was about to meet his creation.

The former salary man gulped and walked out of the entrance hall through a narrow tall corridor. Each step, Suzuki felt his hands sweat and his heart throb. After his revelations with Albedo, he was now dreading this one meeting.

He saw the end of the corridor, leading to another vast marble hall. Suzuki walked out, and paused. There, seated by a pair of sofas right next to the Treasury Entrance proper, was a lone figure. It was clad in a stylish Nazi officer uniform, wearing a large overcoat as a cape. The most distinctive feature, however, was its face, or rather the lack of it. The NPC only had a blank smooth face with two holes for eyes and one for a mouth, as any other Doppelganger.

"Pandora's Actor," whispered Suzuki.

He cleared his throat and approached the NPC.

"It's… good to see you, Pandora's Actor…"

Suzuki stood there, awkwardly waiting for the NPC to say anything. However, the NPC didn't move. Suzuki frowned, confused.

"Eh… hello?" Suzuki called.

No reply. Suzuki blinked. For a brief moment, he wondered if Pandora's Actor had arrived to the New World like an NPC. The Treasury, after all, wasn't technically part of the tomb itself.

Then Pandora's Actor snored.

Suzuki stared in disbelief.

Two important questions popped into Suzuki's questions right away: firstly, why hadn't he thought about the NPC being asleep and, second and more important, why did his NPC snore so loudly? Neither the Pleiades nor Sebas were snoring like that.

Suzuki took a deep breath, raised his staff and – SLAM – struck the ground.

"Argh! Nein!" Cried out Pandora's Actor, flailing his arms and slipping out of his seat, straight to the ground.

He quickly stood up, looking around and acting as if he hadn't just been caught fast asleep whilst on duty.

"M-Mein Schöpfer!" Exclaimed the NPC. "Ich kann erklären!"

Suzuki cringed.

"I-I – external forces have changed my settings and cast a sleeping spell!" Pandora's Actor said.

He proceeded to pose dramatically before Suzuki.

"I tried to resist but alas, I am not a Supreme Being!" He said with exaggerated shame and theatrically waving an angry fist.

Suzuki sighed and his face behind a palm, unable to see any more.

This is worse than I could have imagined, mentally cried Suzuki. He's- he's… an absolute embarrassment! I can't allow the other NPCs to see him! They'll think I am a dork or something!

"Anyways…" Pandora's Actor awkwardly said, clearing his throat. "How may I be of service, mein Schöpfer?"

"I… eh…" Suzuki was still reeling from meeting his living and breathing creation.

He could imagine his friends, laughing in his head. With a shake of his head, he focused back on the task at hand.

"Ehm… right, anyways…" Suzuki cleared his throat. "I just wanted to check on you and see how you were doing."

"It's an honor you concern yourself for such lowly servant," Pandora's Actor solemnly said, kneeling down.

Suzuki was definitely startled by the soft spoken tone and sudden professionalism of his NPC. He was also embarrassed.

"Just… sit down, please," Suzuki sighed, shoulders slumped.

To think he had yet to meet with all other Floor Guardians. He wearily sat down on the coach opposite his creation, needing to rest already after the mounting stress of meeting his embarrassing NPC. Thankfully, Pandora's Actor must have noticed his tiredness, because he did as told and remained very subdued.

"I also wanted to tell you about our current situation," Suzuki admitted. "I guess I should make an official announcement to everyone else at some point… in any case, I don't know if you've noticed, but things have changed. For example, you are… well… alive."

"Ah, us NPCs are no longer code and part of a video game to entertain your fantasies then?" Pandora's Actor asked.

Suzuki choked, his heart nearly leaping out of his throat, all while his NPC merely tilted his head, confused.

"Y-yes," faintly said Suzuki. "About that…" he took a deep breath. "Do not share any of our conversations – well, my monologues – to any of the other NPCs, am I clear? Not one bit leaves this place."

After all, Pandora's Actor wasn't just Suzuki Satoru's creation, he was also the NPC Suzuki talked to the most, sometimes going to extremely personal subjects.

"Ihre Wünsche sind mir Befehl!" Exclaimed Pandora's Actor, jumping to his feet and giving a Nazi salute. "I do not understand your reasoning, but it shall be done!"

"Good," nodded Suzuki with relief.

Now that was a bullet he had dodged. The last thing he needed was for Pandora's Actor to share about his many rants about his co-workers back IRL or how much he wished Albedo was alive.

"I do have one question, Mein Schöpfer," the Doppelganger asked, returning to his seat.

"Ehmm… yes?" Suzuki tentatively replied. Oh God, what could his Creation want to know? Perhaps his new form?

"Are you able to return to your life back on Earth?" Asked a worried Pandora's Actor.

"No, I am afraid not," admitted Suzuki.

"But Mein Schöpfer!" Shouted the doppelganger, jumping right back on his feet and flailing his arms. "That means you will miss your work, and break your perfect punctual streak – losing in turn your bonus at the office and bragging rights on that Yamamoto-Bastard! Not to mention your Boss-Asshole, who will – and I quote – 'lose his shit'!"

Suzuki stared at the doppelganger for three whole seconds, before sobbing and burying his face against his palms.

Why did I tell an inanimate NPC about my life back on Earth? Whined Suzuki. At least it sounds like he doesn't really understand that much of what I said… but Jesus flipping Christ, this freaking embarrassing! He knows way more than I am comfortable with sharing to anyone!

"We can't allow Yamamoto-Bastard to outdo you, Mein Schöpfer! Only one being deserves a promotion at The Great Office of the Supreme Beings, and it is the Great Lord Momonga, Guild-Master of Ainz Ooal Gown!" Exclaimed the Doppelganger with his usual theatrics.

Suzuki looked at the floating staff of Ainz Ooal Gown. Maybe he could change Pandora's Actor's settings, or change his BIO… no, he had to resist temptation. It wasn't the NPCs fault. Still, it was definitely tempting to at least give it a try.

"It's- it's alright, Pandora… can I call you that?" Suzuki asked.

"Ja! You can call me any way you please, Supreme One," quickly said the Dopperlganger, sitting down as if he had not just broken out into a heated speech.

"About the work and my old life… please, don't- don't ever mention them, to me or to any NPC – or anyone else," Suzuki begged. "It's… it's in the past now. I am going to stay."

The doppelganger's blank face remained fixed on his creator.

"Are you… sure, Mein Schöpfer?" Pandora asked, tilting his head.

"Yes," nodded Suzuki. "It isn't like I actually can return to Earth, Pandora, and, even if I could, I am not sure I would. This tomb..." he looked at the great halls around them "…it is too precious to me."

"Because of the other Supreme Beings," Pandora summarized.

"Yes," Suzuki said. "I can't abandon it. That and…" he smiled "…my old life kind of sucked."

"You did express your dissatisfaction," said Pandora. "I suppose this are good news then!"

"Yes…" tiredly chuckled Suzuki.

Pandora tilted his head, confused.

"You don't sound pleased, mein schöpfer," remarked the doppelganger.

Suzuki released a long winded breath, rubbing his eyes. He knew he shouldn't divulge his thoughts, especially not to an NPC (much less that one NPC), but the familiarity of the situation, and the desperate need to vent out won over his paranoia.

"It's just… it's a lot," Suzuki said. "Ruling this place."

"How come, Supreme One? Thus far you've done an excellent job, and I don't say that because you are beloved creation," Pandora said.

"These changes, the ones that have brought life into everyone in this tomb, have only added complications. For example, NPCs now have needs, needs that they didn't have when you were…" Suzuki awkwardly trailed off, averting his eyes.

"When we were code," Pandora finished. "I do not understand what that means though, mein schöpfer. When you say we weren't real and just code… what did that mean?"

Of course you don't know, Suzuki thought. What is code and computer games to a creature of fantasy who has only heard disjointed rants of a frustrated salary man?

"It's kind of complicated to explain," Suzuki replied. "What you need to understand it is just a lot harder to take care of all of you. There are many things I need to reconsider, facilities that need to be added and complications…"

"…and you have to do it without the other Supreme Being," summarized Pandora, his voice soft and sad.

Suzuki nodded with a smile. Of all the NPCs, he wasn't surprised Pandora understood him the best. It was kind of comforting to know he had someone he could open up to, even if Pandora was still a weirdo. Really, why was his NPC the one with the craziest personality?

"Worry not, mein Schöpfter!" Exclaimed Pandora's Actor, saluting. "Say the word and it shall be done! You have your most loyal creation at your disposal!"

"I guess I do," mused Suzuki. "It's good to finally speak with you."

"Believe me, mein Schöpfer, the pleasure is all mein!" Pandora said.

Suzuki looked around. Right, he had forgotten another of the reasons he had showed up at the treasure. The place was, after all, devoid of any living creature's necessities.

"Say, Pandora, are you hungry?"

"Me? Mein Schöpfter, I am your creation, given the divine purpose of guarding this sanctum! Mere cravings of the flesh do not-"

GROWL.

Suzuki hid his face as Pandora awkwardly twiddled his thumbs and averted his face like a child.

"I take that as a yes," Suzuki sighed, shaking his head.

"I apologize most profusely, Supreme One," said a deeply ashamed and subdued Pandora.

"Never mind," said Suzuki, rising to his feet. "Come, let us find ourselves something to eat. I'm also famished."

"About that…" Pandora cleared his throat as he stood up. "Did anything else change around the Tomb, mein Schöpfter?"

"I don't know if you have noticed, but I look kind of different now," Suzuki said with a smile. "You aren't the only one with cravings of the flesh."

"I see," Pandora said.

"Come," Suzuki said, marching away to the actual entrance to the treasury proper. "Before we go there are a few things I'd like to get from here… oh, by the way, I am going to need a recount on our funds. We spent quite a hefty sum yesterday."

"Ah, yes, that," Pandora grumbled, looking at his feet. "I do have the final tally."

Suzuki froze and slowly turned to Pandora's actor.

"Well? What's the total number?" Suzuki asked, terrified.

A few seconds later, Suzuki found himself on all four, close to crying his heart out at the loss of so much money. While it hadn't exactly put a dent to their finances, as a hoarder, it pained him to know he had wasted so much… especially on bedrooms and bathrooms. At least he had Pandora's Actor to try to console him, as much as a weird and excitable NPC could console him.

Finding food had been easy. Dealing with tearful maids all too willing to serve their master while being ashamed for having fallen asleep… not so much. In the end, Suzuki and Pandora managed to get a quick pick me up before they went to where Suzuki truly wished to visit: the Tomb's entrance.

No sooner had he appeared in the dark entrance hall, Suzuki warily looked around. The place was just as he remembered, only with the new odd quality brought about by reality. The staleness in the air, as well as its coldness and dampness were also additions Suzuki could have done without. Made of one large black brick room with massive columns lining up each side, the entrance hall was large enough for dozens of people to walk around freely.

It was also extremely dark. Thankfully, there was some sunlight pouring out from the entrance staircase on the far end, but other than that, there wasn't a single source of light.

"Shouldn't there be torches?" Suzuki wondered, squinting.

He blinked in surprise as the Staff of Ainz Ooal Gown started glowing. Its intensity grew and, before long, it was emitting a bright light, enough to take in their surroundings. Suzuki smiled and offered a mental thanks to the Staff (which replied with its own comforting warmth) before he looked around. It was only then that Suzuki understood the reason behind the darkness.

"Oh come on, now the torches run out? Right, of course they do," muttered Suzuki.

Great, more things to take into account, Suzuki swore.

"So this is the Entrance to the Great Tomb of Nazarick," Pandora said next to him. He sounded absolutely bored, as if he couldn't care any less.

"Right, this is your first time here," realized Suzuki. "I know it isn't as impressive as the treasury but-"

Whatever else he was going to say died on his throat as something dropped from the ceiling. There was a dash of moment and Suzuki nearly yelped.

Pandora immediately rushed in front of Suzuki, ready to fight the ambushers. However, as Suzuki glanced around, he noticed they were surrounded. Silhouettes and shadows leaped forward from all around, probably monsters that had been hidden before their arrival.

Adrenaline coursed through Suzuki's veins. In one desperate move, he readied his Staff of Ainz Ooal Gown and was about to summon all the elementals from the weapon when he realized something and paused. The would-be attackers were all kneeling.

Suzuki, with only the Staff of Ainz Ooal Gown as his source of light, could only stare at the small army of monsters that prostrated themselves to him. They were quite a sight to behold, especially due to the mishmash looks of the defenders. They didn't just differ in species, after all, but also in weapons and armors, evidence of Yggrassil's crazy lore and lack in consistency.

There were those on the weaker end such as Death Knights and Vampire Brides, but then there were the Vampire Aristocrats, with their Victorian noble attires and rapiers on their hips, and Death Champions, dressed in pitch-black pull plate armors like medieval knights. There were also soldiers of the other Floors, such as the blue insectoid Myrmidons with their Hoplite armors and clothes, the red-skinned Doom Legionnaires dressed in ancient Babylonian attire and the Fourth Floor greenish and scaly serpent-humanoid Naga, looking like ancient Rajput soldiers.

Suzuki felt like an idiot for forgetting about the Fourth Floor soldiers, but at the same time, he understood that was because the Fourth Floor was one of the floors he rarely visited. Its guardian was massive and far from approachable, inactive and in a far off island, surrounded by the great lake that made most of the Floor. Anyone who wanted to cross had to take barges or flying spells, leaving them exposed to the wandering bands of Naga lying in wait under the water.

Back with the small army of mob creatures, hovering over everyone, Suzuki shivered as he spotted the Eighth Floor Shadow Flayers. Spectral beings that floated without visible legs, they were vaguely humanoid creatures clad in constantly waving tattered grey robes. Instead of normal fingers, they had three long deadly scythe-like protrusions and, hidden beneath their hoods, one could see three glowing eyes.

"My beloved Lord Momonga!" A voice squeaked.

Suzuki blinked and Pandora stepped aside, only to reveal none other than Peroroncino's creation: Shalltear Bloodfallen. Now that was an NPC Suzuki hoped he wouldn't have to deal with.

"I apologize for startling you, my Lord," the little girl cutely said.

"It-it's no problem," squeaked Suzuki. He cleared his throat and tried to still his racing heart. "I-I wasn't expecting to see so many – eh – warriors here and definitely not from all floors."

"Oh, it was Demiurge's idea, Supreme One," Shalltear said. "Since we can move around floors he thought it would be prudent to pool all our strongest forces in choke-point positions at the first three floors rather than have them spread across all floors."

Suzuki studied the small army gathered at the entrance hall. They were monsters, some more terrifying that others but they were all fuel for nightmares. Seeing (and smelling them) all alive made them look a lot scarier than back in the game. The naga were hideous, more serpent than men, not even their female spell-casters, with barely any clothing, looked any better. The demons and myrmidons were slightly better, for they looked cool in their respective armors. The Shadow Flayers… well, they were just horrifying.

And they are all under my command, Suzuki thought.

What in the world was he supposed to do with all those monsters? Worse, how was he supposed to take care of them all? Should he even bother? The vampires required blood, something Suzuki was certain he didn't have stored anywhere in the Tomb (except a couple of rare bottles for advanced Alchemy). The demons were carnivorous and the Shadow-Flayers… Suzuki didn't want to know what those things ate. At least the Fifth Floor Myrmidons were omnivorous as far as Suzuki was aware.

"I must say, Supreme One, I am so happy to see you," said Shalltear with a tone Suzuki did not appreciate. "It warms my dead heart to know you wished to visit one of my floors… or maybe you wanted to see someone in particular, my Lord?"

Shalltear cutely fluttered her eyelids, making Suzuki stare at the undead child in disbelief.

Why is she blushing? Suzuki wondered. Scratch that, how does an undead manage to blush?

Those hungry red eyes of Shalltear gave Suzuki Albedo-vibes. In other words, it was take for a swift escape.

"I – ehm – Pandora and I were going to give a look to the outside world," said Suzuki.

"Y-you are leaving the tomb?!" Exclaimed Shalltear, horrified. "A-already? But– there is – are you sure, my Lord? D-don't you wish to stay?"

Her once blushing and wistful face had been replaced by utter panic. Suzuki wasn't sure how, but he found himself worried about it.

"I will be back shortly. I just want to get a good look on what we are dealing with," Suzuki said.

Shalltear, though, didn't look convinced. If anything, she looked afraid of something. With that child face of hers, Suzuki couldn't help but feel his heart clench painfully with guilt.

"I will return," Suzuki said, resting a hand on Shalltear's shoulder. "I won't abandon you, I promise."

He quickly regretted the physical touch. Shalltear's face exploded with a red blush (again, how does a dead corpse manage to do that?) and she looked away, a dreamy look on her face.

"I… if-if you say so," Shalltear murmured, averting her eyes and glancing at Suzuki's hand.

I am getting strong Albedo-vibes here, Suzuki thought with a shudder. Peroroncino, you sick bastard, what did you write in her Bio?

For if there was one Bio Suzuki would never approach within six feet, it was definitely something crafted by Peroroncino. In fact, Suzuki, Ulbert and Tabula had made a bet that Peroroncino had copy-pasted only weird sexual fetishes in Shalltear's BIO and Suzuki had no intention in reading any of that.

Suzuki quickly pulled his hand back and tried to come up with a new topic of conversation, especially given the awkward silence that ensued. Shalltear's bouts of giggles and childish behavior weren't helping. Looking around, Suzuki remembered he was surrounded by monsters and, all of a sudden, a question popped in his mind, a very stupid one in fact.

Before he could stop himself, Suzuki pointed at a nearby Vampire Aristocrat and spoke up.

"Ehm- eh – you, the Vampire Aristocrat… What's your name?" Suzuki asked, feeling like a moron for asking such a thing.

"N-name, Supreme One?" The Vampire Aristocrat looked up, confused.

"Your Lord and Master has asked for your designation," Shalltear coldly explained, her tone feeling a chill of winter that made Suzuki shiver.

"Yes, of course Supreme One!" The Vampire Aristocrat hastily (and worriedly) exclaimed. "I apologize for my ignorance, my Lord! I am Vampire Aristocrat, #2315!"

He's… what? A number? Suzuki was surprised by that.

"Right," Suzuki said instead. "Thank you… ehm… Vampire Aristocrat 2315."

The Vampire in question perked up, before bowing his head, a smile in place. Shalltear squinted at the aristocrat before looking at Suzuki with a bright smile.

"Is there anything you wish, my Lord?" She asked. "If- if you wish I could give you a- a personal tour around the floor and- and maybe we could visit my area…"

"I-I think we'll be on our way," Suzuki mumbled.

"R-right," stammered Shalltear, bowing her head. She stepped aside. "As… as you command..."

Suzuki felt weary as he stepped forward. The monsters around him made a path, keeping their heads bowed and kneeling. It was a weird sight, one Suzuki was certainly not used to. He wasn't sure if he ever get used to seeing so many scary creatures lined up like that.

Guilt-ridden, Suzuki felt foolish by the time he made it to the staircase that led up, right outside the Tomb. With Pandora behind him, Suzuki glanced backwards, where Shalltear stared expectantly. He gave her a smile and a wave and, without looking back again, he stepped out, into the New World.

The world outside took Suzuki's breath away. When he made his way out of the Tomb, and down the stairs to the Parthenon-like entrance structure, he was amazed by what he saw and felt.

The sunlight alone was surreal, as much as the bright blue sky. Suzuki stared at the blue vastness, and few white cotton clouds. He had seen such things before, but he had never truly experienced them.

Suzuki felt excitement bubbling in his chest. With a grin, he pulling a necklace from his inventory. Pandora's Actor didn't say anything, he simply morphed into the avian shape of Peroronchino. After he put the necklace on, Suzuki licked his lips, heart racing, and concentrated.

"[Fly]," he casted.

Suzuki gasped as his feet rose a few inches off the ground. He stared down, trying to stay standing straight, before grinning. He turned to Pandora's Actor.

"Follow me," he said.

And with that, Suzuki flew up. He had to stop his ascent after twenty meters, needing to pause to gather his bearings. When he looked down, he laughed. He was flying… he was freaking flying! And it wasn't the unreal sensation of the Dive engine. Gravity, weight and the wind all gave it a new array of sensations that made it something entirely new for Suzuki.

Then he spotted the vast grassland beyond the Tomb's walls. Without a second thought, he flew towards them, staring at the tall green and yellow grass. Suzuki landed on the fields, studying the vegetation with wide eyes. Then, tentatively, he reached towards the grass.

The feeling of tall grass against his hands was unreal to him. He stared at his fingers and grass blades in disbelief. Never in a thousand years had he hoped to actually feel such a thing… vegetation, real and wild. He knew there were natural reserves back IRL, and the rich even had their own garden-houses.

Suzuki closed his eyes and allowed the feeling of it all wash over him. The grass against his fingertips, the sun warmly caressing his face, the wind brushing against his hair… it was all bliss.

"Are you alright, Supreme One?"

Suzuki turned around only to see Pandora's Actor standing there without a care about the miracle around him. A part of Suzuki couldn't blame the NPC. To him, grass and wind were irrelevant. The NPCs hadn't been alive for long, yet their priorities and values were already set. They hadn't, after all, experienced Suzuki's grim life.

"Yes, Pandora's Actor. I am… just enjoying myself," admitted Suzuki.

He sat down, smiling as a bed of grass cushioned his back. Pandora's Actor, ever the faithful NPC, remained standing a step behind Suzuki. He remained attentive, looking around for threats, particularly from the forest miles away. Suzuki knew he should have been more careful, but at the moment, he couldn't care less.

Amazing, was all Suzuki could think. Blue Planet would have loved this place… who am I kidding? Everyone would have loved this!

He remained like that for a while, satisfied and relaxed. After a few minutes, however, a certain NPC decided to break the silence.

"Do you intend to set out and explore the world, Supreme One?" Pandora's Actor asked.

Suzuki wondered if, perhaps, that wasn't quite the best idea for him. He was no ruler, and it wouldn't be hard to just grab a few items and just make a run for it, away from all responsibility. True, he didn't know what laid in wait out there, but considering what awaited back in the Great Tomb, maybe it was worth a risk.

Suzuki scoffed at the notion. No, he could never run from Nazarick. He had been drawn to it in its last days, when the game was as good as dead, and thus he was not about to abandon it when it came to life. Still, the temptation to just fly off, to the horizon, lingered in his soul.

"What would you do if I said yes?" Asked Suzuki.

"Why, Mein Schöpfer, I would prepare a pair of backpacks, gather all we might need and be right behind you no matter where you lead us," said Pandora's Actor, bowing towards him. "All I ask, is that you allow me to go with you…" he added in a softer, subdued voice that sounded off coming from the extravagant doppelganger "…that you don't abandon me like the other Supreme Beings…"

Suzuki felt a hand grip his heart at those words. All notion of running away evaporated, replaced with guilt. He recalled Shalltear's previous expression, looking like a child desperate for her father to stay around.

How selfish of me, thought Suzuki. Here I am, still hurt about my friends never showing up, when they left behind a lot more than just me behind… I can't do that to them. I can't abandon them.

"You don't have to worry, my creation," Suzuki softly said, staring off at the horizon. "I don't intend to go anywhere."

"Truly?" Pandora's Actor snapped his head. "That's… a relief, because, Mein schöpfer, I would have sorely missed most of the treasures of Nazarick."

"Most?" mused Suzuki.

"Well, I am sure you would have wanted to carry a few valuables with you, Supreme One," said Pandora's Actor.

Suzuki laughed at that. He had forgotten Pandora's Actor's BIO had set a love for being surrounded and cataloging the treasury's many items. Of course, he would be unwilling to part without a few treasures in hand.

Suzuki shook his head and stood up. He noticed, much to his chagrin, that his robes were now covered in dirt. He slapped his clothes, only partially successful in dusting himself off. It was as he saw the dirt he realized something.

"Urgh," groaned Suzuki.

"What is the matter, my creator? Are you alright?" Pandora's Actor asked worriedly and hastily.

"I've just realized that I have to make a launderette or something," muttered Suzuki.

"Ehm… launderette?" Tentatively asked a confused guardian of the treasury.

"A place to wash one's clothes," Suzuki clarified.

"Oh," was all Pandora's actor realized.

Clearly, he hadn't had much of a clue that clothes got dirty and needed washing. Yggrassil, after all, didn't bother mimicking such nuisances.

"Ah, the joys of being an Overlord," muttered Suzuki. "Worrying about my minions' laundry…"

Pandora's Actor responded with a dramatic bow and a wave of an arm.

"I know you expect me to say such things as your creation, Supreme One," Pandora's Actor said. "But your concerns alone have proven without a shadow of a doubt that you have everything you need to rule the Great Tomb."

"I am no ruler, Pandora's Actor," sighed Suzuki.

"Ist nicht wahr! You have all the makings of an Overlord, Mein Schöpfter," exclaimed Pandora's actor with his embarrassing theatrics. "You have the power, the wisdom, the experience…" he paused, just as dramatic as his usual flailing. Slowly, he turned to his creator "…you are the only one who could rule us all, mein führer."

Suzuki looked at the Staff of Ainz Ooal Gown, allowing Pandora's Actor's words sink in. He wasn't entirely wrong, after all. Only Suzuki could wield the Staff, and he had a lot of knowledge when it came to managing the tomb, and even a guild. True, it was not the same as ruling, but it wasn't like any of the NPCs had the same experience.

They depend on me, realized Suzuki. Just as I now depend on them.

The looked up at the heavens, just as another gust of wind brushed against his face.

they are all I have got, Suzuki thought.

He closed his eyes, allowing the weight of the truth settle on his shoulders. There was no telling if there was a way back to IRL, and even then, perhaps it was out of his grip. Moreover, did he even want to return? He hadn't been entirely honest to Pandora's Actor. A part of him, no matter how awful his previous life had been, missed it. He knew it was irrational and stupid, but that was how fondness worked at times.

Suzuki touched the grass again and a smile formed in his face. He looked at an expectant Pandora's Actor.

"Come on, Pandora's Actor," said Suzuki. "Let us return home before someone realizes I am missing."

He flew back to the Tomb's entrance, a smile stuck on his face.

I will do it, he thought as he slowly descended the stairs of the Great Tomb of Nazarick.

He stopped near the bottom, glancing at the sunlight pouring in, before he delved deeper into the darkness. He allowed the shadows to swallow him as he marched onwards.

I will rule this place to the best of my ability, thought Suzuki.

He stretched an arm for Pandora's Actor to hold. Again, the doppelganger seemed reluctant to do so, and it took Suzuki a glare for his creation to finally grab him, if only pinching his a bit of his clothes.

Suzuki's mind overflowed with new ideas as he pondered all that was needed to be done. His little escapade had truly been a breath of fresh air. He had needed it to feel re-vitalized.

We need to organize scouting missions around the tomb, if only to learn about our immediate surroundings and search for food, he thought. Aura and Mare would do well in the forest… and Demiurge could organize a functioning intelligence force with Nigredo's divination skills. I need to keep that Arch-Devil as busy as possible.

"If I may, mein schöpfter," said Pandora's actor, breaking his creator from his reverie. "You look definitely better… are you truly eager to rule us, Supreme One?"

The lingering suggestion that Pandora's Actor would assist Suzuki if he so much thought about dropping everything to have fun elsewhere made Suzuki smile at his creation.

"Oh, I feel far better," admitted Suzuki. "As for ruling over all of you… I guess there's only one way of knowing."

He looked around the dark entrance. There was still so much to do about the Tomb… he had yet to visit each floor and make them inhabitable. He would need to think of some way to allow NPCs to travel between floors with ease, as well as supplies. Additionally, he needed to start thinking about ways to conceal the Tomb. The last thing he needed was to test the defenses with any creatures from the New World.

Suzuki shook his head and grinned.

Damn, so much to do… and that's just the Tomb! I need to study and learn magic, and quickly! He mentally laughed, feeling strangely excited. Maybe on my free time I will visit the library and see if I can actually get books from there, and just about magic. There's a lot I need to learn…

"Are you ready, Pandora's Actor?" Suzuki asked.

"Ja, Oberherr!" Exclaimed the doppelganger with a Nazi salute.

Suzuki sweatdropped and shook his head at Pandora's Actor's antics. He clenched the Staff of Ainz Ooal Gown, feeling its power, before he chuckled.

"Then brace yourself," said Lord Momonga. "For there is a lot to be done!"

And with that, the Overlord and his creation vanished from the First Floor's entrance.

It was peaceful… too damn peaceful. In all truth, after five hectic days of just running around making sure the Great Tomb of Nazarick could serve all of its denizens, he should have welcomed a moment of respite. And yet, for all the tranquility in his office, Suzuki Satoru, aka Lord Momonga, couldn't concentrate on his work.

He stared at the parchment before him, reading the same line perhaps three times over. Exhausted, Suzuki released a sigh of annoyance before dropping the piece of parchment and pushing it away from him with barely restrained disgust, towards the piles of books on his desk.

Suzuki stood up and stretched a bit. He couldn't help but groan as his sore muscles protested the motion. Apparently, spending his day seated like that had taken its toll on his body.

He glared at the many books on his desk. There were all sorts of tomes, all of which he had never read before: from Sun Tzu's "the Art of War", to thicker literature such as Machiavelli's "The Prince", Max Weber's "Theory of Bureaucracy" and Von Clausewitz "On War". To think he himself had decided to go through them all. After all, a good Overlord was meant to be well-read, he had thought.

At least back on Earth I didn't have to study like this, Suzuki thought.

Seriously, the stress was starting to get to him. It wasn't like he arrived fresh from Earth.

Ha, I can't imagine what the Floor Guardians would say if I died of stress, Suzuki morbidly thought. Would they scour the world seeking vengeance against an invisible murderer or would they start pointing fingers at each other, blaming themselves?

Suzuki grimaced at the thought of the distress he would cause everyone.

The Overlord marched over to the coffee table and sofas not far from his desk, the Staff of Ainz Ooal Gown floating closely behind. At the table, a platter full of biscuits and a pot of tea awaited Suzuki. He plopped down on a sofa and released another tired sigh. With a chocolate cookie in one hand and a cup of steaming tea on the other, Suzuki found himself smiling as he finally managed to relax a bit.

"Well, all things considered, this world isn't that bad," hummed Suzuki. "Maybe I could ask the maid to prepare the bath house. My poor body could use a good ole bath…"

Making use of the Guild's once useless sento and onsen had been quite an incredible experience. Never before had he taken such long and refreshing baths, much less with so much water. Then again, it wasn't like he had much more to do if he wanted to relax. There were no televisions, no video games, no cell phones… nothing! Suzuki actually felt like he was going through technological withdrawal, if that was even possible. Not that he could rest that much, always having something else to do.

"God knows I need to mentally prepare for my grand moment," muttered Suzuki, angrily biting at the cookies. "How much free time do I have anyway?"

He looked at the luxurious grandfather clock behind him and groaned. He didn't have that long left. At least not enough for a nice visit to the sento.

I guess I could continue reading one of my books, thought Suzuki.

Suzuki glanced at his hands, ridden with extra rings, and smirked. It was a good thing there were no longer a one ringer per finger restriction like in the game, or the fact he could wear more than one necklace. After all, each piece of Jewelry definitely boosted Suzuki's intelligence. He was certain he wouldn't have made it past the first page of "The Prince" otherwise. In fact, it was thanks to his boosted stats that Suzuki was able to retain so much information, much more than back in his old life.

However, no matter how much Wisdom or Intelligence he could increase on himself, it couldn't make his reading material any less dull and boring. Suzuki hadn't exactly delved into games like Yggrassil due to his passion for literature, after all.

I could try to finally learn the [Message] spell, Suzuki thought, before grimacing. On second thought, I think I'll leave that for tomorrow…

Learning magic, he discovered, was way harder than advertised. Actually, there were plenty of things he was supposed to master before he could even cast his first spell. It was outrageous! To think he had to first learn to visualize (or sense his own mana), then learn to tap into his natural power, manage to obtain a level of control over his mana and, only then, consider casting a spell… and even then Suzuki couldn't skip to the high tier spells.

"Why couldn't there be cheats or hacks?" Muttered Suzuki and stood up, finished with his tea and cookie.

Apparently, it was studying after all. An overlord couldn't procrastinate…

Then again, it was that or worrying about the ones he sent out scouting. Truth to be told, ever since he had allowed his servants' first exploration mission into the forest, Suzuki had been restless. He couldn't stay calm, not with the knowledge he had sent Aura, Mare, some of the Pleiades and minions, to scout their surroundings, exposed to dangers beyond the Great Tomb's proximity.

So many things could go wrong… What if they come across Players? What if there are powerful dangers they can't fight against? So many terrifying scenarios gnawed at Suzuki. If any of the NPCs got hurt, he would never forgive himself.

I feel like a worrying parent, thought Suzuki.

Suzuki felt the Staff of Ainz Ooal Gown send waves of power, even when it floated not far from him. Suzuki scoffed, glaring at the golden staff.

"You find this amusing, don't you?" Suzuki grunted.

By the feel of it, it seemed that the Staff, which apparently carried its own level of sentiency, was definitely amused by Suzuki's efforts. The Overlord huffed and shook his head, but there wasn't much else he could do.

There was a knock on the door, one that confused Suzuki. He stretched a hand, drawing the Staff of Ainz Ooal Gown towards the open palm.

"An Overlord's life is always busy," muttered Suzuki, reluctantly returning to his desk. "Enter!"

"My Lord," Sebas greeted. "I have returned."

He knelt before Suzuki, a hand on his chest and looking solemn. Suzuki repressed another groan. He was never going to get used to all the kneeling and formalities.

"Raise, Sebas," sighed Suzuki. "Anything to report?"

"Lady Albedo wishes to inform you everything is being prepared as discussed for today's announcement," Sebas proclaimed. "She believes it will all run as scheduled, Supreme One."

One thing of being always busy and having a lot to do was that Suzuki had quite a few excuses to keep Albedo away and working on something else. That being said, the fact Albedo hadn't taken the opportunity to show up herself made Suzuki nervous. Albedo was up to something… he could feel it in his bones. If only he had read her bio more thoroughly, he wouldn't be at a loss about her behavior.

"Head Maid Pestonya asked me to inform you about the state of the washing room. The tests have been successful, and the lavatory is now fully operational, Supreme One," proclaimed Sebas. "The maids and servants send her infinite appreciation for your consideration and kindness, my Lord."

Suzuki sweatdropped. Sebas was talking about the place he had designed to serve as a laundry room for everyone's clothes as one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Then again, Sebas was a butler in spirit, so he could appreciate it more than others, no doubt. In the end, Suzuki shook his head, annoyed.

The bloody joys of being a freaking Overlord: concerning myself with my servants' laundry, Suzuki mentally swore for the umpteenth time. It couldn't be helped; the washing room had taken a lot more than Suzuki would have liked, both in time and money.

"That's good, I guess," grumbled Suzuki. "Are there any news on the twins or the Pleiades?"

"None, my Lord," Sebas said. "At least, none that I have been made aware of, Supreme One."

Which means that so far they haven't run into trouble, Suzuki summarized with relief swelling in her gut. He worried regardless.

"I should have personally overseen the scouting missions," muttered the Overlord under his breath.

Sebas hummed, averting his eyes. Suzuki smiled, turning to the Butler.

"Go on, Sebas. Speak your mind," Suzuki chuckled.

"W-well, my lord," Sebas said, before clearing his throat. "If I recall correctly, you believed Albedo was quite suitable to oversee the exploration efforts. You did want to focus on regaining your strength and to prepare for today's grand event."

More like I wanted to do something other than run after everyone like some parent making sure they didn't forget anything for school, thought Suzuki. And at the same time, he did remember how panicky he had been after he had made that one decision, the one that was bound to give him a panic attack.

Suzuki mentally swore at his bad luck. Why did he have to be sent to this new World only to serve as some kind of administrator? It was dull and boring, and there was way too much responsibility. Moreover, Suzuki was certain his decisions would inevitably lead to some absolute disaster.

"You are concerned for their well-being, aren't you, my Lord?" Sebas said, face softened.

"Of course I am," sighed Suzuki. "It is a master's responsibility to care for his subordinates."

"If I may…" Sebas said with what Suzuki could only describe a fatherly smile. "Young Aura and Mare, as well as all of my fellow members of the Great Tomb, are more than capable. All of the Supreme Beings put their trust in them to protect the Tomb, so I don't doubt they have the capacity to withstand adversity."

Suzuki smiled at that. Was that how Touch Me treated his daughter back in real life? Touch Me claimed that Sebas, his creation, closely resembled himself physically. It was a claim everyone doubted (and teased Touch Me about). Sebas Tian was, as Yamaiko and Bukubukuchagama had rather bluntly stated, way too handsome for any real person.

"I still can't help worrying, Sebas," Suzuki said. "I know they are capable, but this is all new for them… and there is no telling what danger lies out there. For all we know, there could be Players, waiting to ambush them, or worse."

"And if worse comes to happen, my Lord, I can assure you, they will give their lives with a smile in their faces if it means you learn about these threats and further your goals," Sebas assured.

And that right there is part of my worries. You NPCs are way too quick to discard your lives for my sake, thought Suzuki.

"We were created to serve as needed and die if demanded, my Lord," Sebas said.

"I trust you all to be capable, Sebas," Suzuki sighed. "It's this New World what has me so worried…"

Sebas chuckled good-naturedly before he bowed and then walked to stand behind Suzuki. It was something Sebas had insisted on doing: following Suzuki everywhere or standing guard. Suzuki took a deep breath and tried to muster the strength to return to studying. There probably wasn't that much time left before he had to play the role of Lord Momonga. The stage was already being set by Albedo.

Sadly, he just couldn't do it. He couldn't find the will to continue studying.

I am not used to this, thought the man. I have never read so much in my life!

He took a deep breath.

Come on, Suzuki, do it for the Great Tomb of Nazarick! He told himself. They depend on you!

Deep down, he pitied his poor NPCs. They sure deserved better than a former salary man turned supreme master.

Without any excuses to stop him, he grumpily grabbed one of the books and pulled it towards himself. He opened the book right to the page he was reading, took a deep breath, and sighed. His eyes found the last line he had read, he leaned forward, ready to continue when-

DING.

Suzuki didn't even hesitate. He closed the book, leaned back and sighed in relief.

Oh thank God, a distraction, Suzuki thought. He touched his right ear and accepted the [Message] spell he was receiving.

"Supreme One, Lady Albedo wished to inform you that Lady Aura, Lord Mare and Lord Demiurge have returned," Naberal Gamma reported. "She also wished to inform you that everything is ready. We await your arrival."

Oh good, they are- hold up! Did I hear right? Suzuki thought.

"Naberal, did you say Demiurge?" Suzuki weakly said.

"Yes, my Lord," Naberal reported. "As you had instructed, Demiurge left the Tomb to assist the Twins when needed."

Suzuki stood up, heart racing. Had something happened? Demiurge wasn't supposed to step outside the Tomb unless the Twins had faced trouble of some kind and needed assistance. There were only terrible scenarios that came to mind that needed of Demiurge's intervention.

"Are they alright?" Suzuki asked.

"They are all in good health and in an excellent mood, my Lord," Naberal reported.

That gave Suzuki pause. Although it was a good thing the NPCs were all safe, a happy Demiurge was never a good thing, especially when he had been outside the Tomb. Suzuki frowned and turned to Sebas, who looked ready to fight any threats if needed, stern and tense.

"I'll go to the Throne Room right away," he said.

"Understood, Supreme One," Naberal said, cutting the communication.

"Damn it," swore Suzuki.

"Did something happen, my Lord?" Sebas asked.

"Apparently, the Twins and Demiurge are back," grunted Suzuki.

Sebas frowned, confused.

"But, my Lord, I thought you instructed Demiurge to-"

"Yes, I know," interrupted Suzuki. "That's what worries me."

He took a deep breath.

"I guess the time has arrived," Suzuki sighed. "Come on, Sebas, let's go to the Throne Room."

"I obey, my Lord," Sebas said, and bowed.

"Then let us not leave everyone waiting any longer," mused Suzuki.

He raised a hand, and looked down at one of his fingers. There, his eyes fell on a big red one: the ring of Ainz Ooal Gown. Suzuki didn't wait for permission; he reached towards Sebas and took his arm, much to Sebas' discomfort. There was something about touching Suzuki had made the NPCs really squirmy. If only Albedo shared on that feeling… her and Shalltear both.

He closed his eyes, focused on the item and, just like that, felt the world shift around him. When Suzuki opened his eyes once again, he was before the Throne Room's entrance. Only then did he release the breath he had been holding.

I'm never going to get tired of teleporting around the tomb, thought Suzuki with a smile.

Suzuki then looked at the three guards by the doors, Sebas Tian moving to stand behind his master.

The guard to the left was one of Cocytus' Myrmidons. The guard to the right was a scarlet demon creature, one the Doom Legionnaires, courtesy of Demiurge. The two slammed a fist over their chests and struck the floor with their halberds.

"Hail, Supreme One!" Chorused the pair on each side.

Suzuki gave them a smile, trying not to show just how startled he was by the shouting. He then addressed the figure standing right in front of the door, between the demon and the insectoid, who remained silent as she knelt down.

"Good to see you, Rubedo," Suzuki said.

"Greetings, my master," replied the figure at the center of the trio, her voice a scary metallic shrill.

Thin and elegant, the angelic mechanical construct, clad in a black-and-silver kimono, remained kneeling. She was a robot made of seamless silvery steel, with sections over her body exposed to reveal gears and cables beneath, giving her the overall appearance of an unfinished robotic doll. Her face was one smooth mask of a pretty woman in an eternal gentle smile, while long silky black hair draped down her scalp much like Albedo and Nigredo, her two sisters. Two wide mechanical wings sprouted out of her back, with sparks of electricity arcing across her body. Finally, to accompany her fearsome appearance, she carried a silver naginata.

Rubedo was allegedly one of the strongest NPCs of all of Nazarick. According to Tabula, she was made differently than his other NPCs, although in Momonga's (and the other guildmembers's) less than humble opinion, Tabula made stuff up. Just how in the world did someone create NPCs other than through the NPC Creation System?

All three of the Royal Guard carried a purple tabard with Momonga's sigil over their usual clothes and armor. They were, after all, meant to serve Momonga and only Momonga, not even if another Supreme Being so happened to show up.

Not that I need a Royal Guard, grumbled Suzuki.

Sadly, trying to tell his Floor Guardians (particularly Albedo) that he didn't have any plans of leaving the tomb just yet didn't stop them from worrying. It had been Albedo's idea that, since he had lost his powers and had allegedly regained his mortal flesh, he would need extra protection. In the end, Suzuki decided to acquiesce, if only so they could stop worrying.

The massive doors to the Throne Room opened and Rubedo stepped in. The Myrmidon and Doom Legionnaire went to stand behind the Overlord as a royal escort. Suzuki, in turn, mentally groaned.

Enough with the bloody formalities, he thought.

"His Supreme Lordship, the Ruler of the Great Tomb!" Rubedo announced. "Hail, Lord Momonga!"

Suzuki grimaced as he saw and heard dozens of NPCs kneel hastily on the Throne Room's cold floor. There was a crowd waiting in the Throne Room, one that made Suzuki nervous. Although it had been his idea, he was starting to regret asking for so many NPCs. At the same time, he wondered if perhaps there weren't more NPCs than he had asked for...

The Overlord marched forward, with Rubedo keeping the lead. Once inside, they were joined by two more members of the Royal Guard, both with their purple tabards, and halberds in hand. One was a Vampire Aristocrat. The other member of the royal guard was a Shadow Flayer. In all truth, there were sixteen members of the Royal Guard, the rest of which either laid in wait somewhere in the Throne Room or were resting.

Suzuki marched across the crowd of kneeling NPCs. He spotted Area Guardians, like Kyouhukou (the massive walking cockroach) and Neuronist (a bloated Brain Eater). There were other NPCs as well, from Homunculi maids to Vampire Brides. It seemed that Albedo had made sure that there would be a grand audience, more so than Suzuki had wanted.

As he spotted them, Suzuki reminded himself these were his servants and his people. They were inhuman creatures, some with horrible appetites and desires. Regardless, they were all under his care and he had to overlook their appearance. It was, sadly, easier said than done. The likes of Neuronist still gave Suzuki the creeps.

Finally, Suzuki made it to the far end. The Lady Overseer was one of the two NPCs standing, next to the Throne of Kings. Suzuki felt a sense of déjà vu, seeing her giving him the same smile she always did whenever he visited the Throne Room. Behind the throne, rather hidden from view, was Pandora's Actor, who gave a reassuring nod to Suzuki. The overlord couldn't help but respond to with a thankful smile and a nod of his own.

Demiurge, Aura and Mare waited to the right, near the steps to the Throne. Cocytus and an ugly oversized pink fetus-looking creature with stick-like wings and a golden halo, otherwise known as Victim, knelt to the left.

Without saying a word, Suzuki went straight to his throne and sat down. Rubedo positioned herself to Suzuki's left, a step below. The Royal Guard, in turn, moved a step further down and spread out in front of Suzuki, giving ample space for anyone to see the Overlord. Suzuki took a deep breath and fought his growing nerves. He hated being the focus of such a huge audience…

Come on, Suzuki, you can do this! You are their leader! Their Master! He told himself.

He turned to Albedo and gave her a nod.

"You may raise!" Albedo exclaimed. "You now stand in the presence of his Supreme Lordship, Lord Momonga, the One Who Stayed, the Last of the Forty One and Leader of Ainz Ooal Gown!"

Suzuki glanced at Albedo. Last of the Forty-One? The One-Who-Stayed? What was she doing giving him such titles? Albedo only smiled cutely at Suzuki, her schemes hidden behind that pretty face of hers. Whatever she was up to, Suzuki could only fear it was more than met the eye.

The NPCs did as told, all eyes immediately fixed on Suzuki. The man in question made it a point to avoid staring back. He ignored them all, favoring to look at the familiar forms of his Floor guardians.

"Welcome everyone," Suzuki said loud and clear. He puffed his chest. So far, he felt he was doing rather well all things considered. "It is good to see you all once again!"

He took a moment to breathe a couple of times and still his nerves.

Just how the hell do politicians do this all the time? Power-craze? Lack of morals? Stupidity in general? Suzuki pondered. He just hoped he didn't end up like one of those bastards from his old world.

"First of all, I would like to apologize for not gathering you all like this before," Suzuki said. "Unfortunately, there were many urgent matters to tend to…"

And boy did Suzuki need mental preparation before he even dared give such a public speech. He had actually needed some time to prepare his speech and practice in front of his mirror.

"...you all deserve a proper explanation of what happened," Suzuki carried on. "As you might already be aware, the Great Tomb of Nazarick, and all of its denizens, myself included, have been transported to an entire new World. With the change of worlds, so has the magics and order of the Tomb changed."

He paused, taking a deep breath. His heart sure was beating like crazy.

"You now all require proper rest and nourishment, amongst other needs," Suzuki said. "I am afraid my friends and I had never envisioned such a scenario, and thus the Tomb was ill-prepared to provide for all of you. In the last few days, I've made sure to remedy the situation…"

Suzuki almost choked as he remembered the final figures of spent gold and materials. It had been the real tragedy of the whole world change.

"Amidst the changes caused by this event, you might have noticed my different looks," Suzuki carried on, voice firm and unwavering. "I am as close as human as one can be with few exceptions. I have been stripped powerless… pathetic even. It is to my deepest regret I must inform you I am no longer the Overlord that once ruled."

Suzuki didn't miss the way the NPCs looked either horrified, terribly worried or outright enraged by their master's fate. It was heart-warming, although he could do without riled up man-eating monsters.

"This change of worlds has left me with this pitiful form, but I assure you my resolve has never been stronger!" Exclaimed Suzuki. "Let me tell you right here and now one fundamental truth of my situation: my place is here, with you! I assure you, even in my newfound weakness, I shall not abandon you…"

That got the NPCs beaming and staring in shock. When he first wrote his speech, Suzuki had made it a point to include that part. It was meant both to assure the NPCs (especially after what he had learned from Pandora's Actor and Shalltear's reactions) and a reminder to himself.

"…for I am Lord Momonga, ruler of the Tomb of Nazarick!" He proclaimed, slamming his staff for effect.

It actually felt too damn good to finally shout at something. The NPCs all broke into a loud cheer, shouting one over the other, and praising him. It was a tad disturbing, all things considered, but at the moment Momonga was focusing only on the power coursing from his staff.

"I will depend on each and every single one of you to rule this magnificent place," Momonga said, strangely elated.

The speech had apparently done wonders to his mood and confidence, that and the way the NPCs seemed close to tears. Damn, Momonga hadn't intended for that to happen.

"Enough fanfare," exclaimed Suzuki, his voice echoing across the Throne Room.

The NPCs managed to get a grip of themselves, and Suzuki got some time to catch his breath.

"Now, onto business," Suzuki proclaimed. "Given the new situation of the Tomb, there will be a few changes moving forward. Sebas Tian, step forward."

The Butler, who had been standing behind the Floor Guardian, mechanically moved to stand between Demiurge and Cocytus, head bowed, right at the bottom of the steps leading to the Throne of Kings.

"The Ninth Floor never had an official Floor Guardian," Suzuki said. "Today, that will change."

Sebas stared up at Suzuki with wide eyes.

"It is both an honor, and a responsibility, to be a Floor Guardian," Suzuki explained, staring straight into Sebas shocked face. "A Floor Guardian is an overseer and master of all what happens within the floor of the Great Tomb of Nazarick. To be a Floor Guardian is to be an extension of my will, and as such, an extension of my duty to rule over this place I – alongside my friends – have created."

Suzuki gestured at Pandora's Actor, who walked out from behind Rubedo with a cushion in his hands. Glowing over the cushion was a ring of Nazarick. Sebas probably knew whose.

"Kneel, Head Butler Sebas Tian," Albedo commanded.

Suzuki rose from his throne and stood before a kneeling Sebas. Pandora's Actor offered the ring to him, and Suzuki took it, before offering it to Sebas. It was unnecessary formalities, but both Albedo and Pandora's Actor insisted on the theatrics. The decision to elevate Sebas to Floor Guardian, on the other hand, had been all Suzuki's idea. Now that the Ninth Floor would be fully functioning, it made sense to have a Floor Guardian to administer it; hell, Sebas already fulfill the role.

"Now take this ring, baring the seal of your creator, Touch Me, and stand as one of my Floor Guardians," Suzuki said. "Help us all protect the Great Tomb of Nazarick."

Sebas did as told. Suzuki had expected an emotional response from the Head Butler, but a single tear rolling down from one eye hadn't been one of them. It was much more than he had expected from the ever professional Dragonoid Suzuki had come to learn in the last few days.

"I will still expect you to serve as Head butler, though," Suzuki whispered to Sebas.

The dragonoid gave a smile. He tentatively put Touch Me's ring, stared at it in awe, and went to stand next to Victim, proud and ready to serve. Suzuki returned to his throne, already emotionally exhausted. It felt good, however, to see the likes of Sebas so overjoyed.

"Since we are in the topic of changes and Floor Guardians, let it be known that henceforth, Albedo is Guardian to the Tenth Floor of the Tomb of Nazarick and Overseer of all this tomb. She is, from now until I decide otherwise, my right hand in all of my decisions. If I am unavailable for any reason, Albedo is to rule in my name," proclaimed Suzuki, slamming the Staff of Ainz Ooal Gown for theatrics.

Suzuki actually wasn't going to deny he still enjoying playing the role of Overlord.

"Now, there are many things I wish discuss with all of my Floor Guardians, mostly the roles you will have," Suzuki said. "But that's a lengthy conversation for another time. As the first exploration mission outside the tomb, let us hear what we know of the New World!"

He took a deep breath. Whatever had made Demiurge to step outside the Tomb, Suzuki prayed it wasn't so bad.

"Floor Guardians Demiurge, Aura and Mare!"

"My Lord!" The three guardians chorused.

"What do you have to report?" Suzuki asked. He raised an eyebrow at Demiurge. "From what I can guess, something interesting happened…"

Aura and Mare turned to Demiurge. Suzuki felt a grimace forming as he noticed the satisfied smirk on Arch-Devil's face.

"Why, yes, Supreme One," Demiurge purred with delight. "We have learned quite a lot from this world. In fact, we have actually come across some of its denizens!"

Oh God, Demiurge made first contact with the people of the New World? Suzuki thought in horror.

"Worry not, my Lord, we have acquired a few specimens for your questioning," Demiurge proudly boasted.

I do not like where this is going, thought Suzuki with mounting dread.

"Shall we start from the beginning?" Demiurge proposed.

"Yes," Suzuki choked out, before clearing his throat. "Aura, Mare, how did things go? Was there a reason you called for Demiurge's aid?"

The two elven children nervously looked at each other before stepping closer to the throne. They twiddled their thumbs and averted their eyes.

"It wasn't really out intention, Supreme One," Aura said, before innocently whistling and looking anywhere but Suzuki.

"Y-yes, my Lord," Mare stammered. "We- we only sum-summoned Demiurge when- when we found ourselves in a complicated situation."

Suzuki felt like screaming in despair. What had his NPCs done?!

"Speak clearly," Albedo frostily commanded. "You are wasting our master's precious time!"

Suzuki really needed a plunge at the onsen… he raised a hand, making Albedo return to her usual smiling self.

"Please," begged Suzuki. "From the start, right from when I sent you to scout out the nearby forest for any food and creatures. What happened from there onwards?"

Aura and Mare traded looks, and then had a silent conversation in which they tried to force the other to narrate what had transpired. Suzuki, hands sweaty and heart clenched with impatience, could only expectantly wait for the two to reveal what they had done. They fact they were reluctant to speak about it spoke for itself: the twins knew they had gotten carried away and may have gone against one of Suzuki's instructions.

"Aura," Suzuki decided.

The young girl winced, before nodding.

"Right, Supreme One," said the elf, scratching her neck. "Ehm… well, so you sent us to the forest, right? So there we were…"

And that was how Lord Momonga, secretly the former human Suzuki Satoru, could only listen with abject horror as three of his Floor Guardians narrated how they committed war crimes and genocides to denizens of the huge forest near the Tomb.

Suzuki was already starting to regret having not taken Pandora's Actor's suggestion and made a run for it.

Author Notes:

Damn, I sure know how to get carried away when writing. I just hope it wasn't too boring. Worry not, from here on out we have Suzuki slowly fulfilling his role as Momonga as shit slowly hits the fan.

Thank you for all the reviews! I am glad this fic had such positive reception. I only hope I don't disappoint. I have a bad habit of spiraling to crazy world-building nonsense...

So, what do you think? Do you think Suzuki has remained consistent?

By the way, what ideas do you have? Anything you wish to see? Would you agree on making Suzuki get more than one girlfriend?

One more thing that needs to be said, but there will be a few important changes from cannon:

- As you have noticed, there are no rings of sustence (they always felt to me like cheap cop-outs) and for all of their cosplaying, the Tomb is lacking on a lot of instalations. Expect Yggrassil and the Tomb to be far more consistent to an MMORPG than some weird power-fantasy scheme. I took a lot of inspiration on Wow and other MMORPGs in that regard.

- Humans, especially in the Re-Estize kingdom, will be different, especially the village of Carne. I may or may not have decided to change their culture, especially frontier villages like Carne Village. Oh, and there won't be an Adventurer profession. Will we see the great Black Knight Momon? Perhaps...

- Shippings are not set. While I am going to have Suzuki fall for Enri, I am not sure I can manage to make the ship work... so I am still on the fence on how to move forward with it.

Cheers and till next time,

The Emerald Commander
